A historic Sussex pub-restaurant the Black Swan is located at the edge of St Leonards Forest (where according to legend a dragon lives). Right at the gateway to the South Downs and convenient for Crawley and Horsham the Black Swan boasts a large car park, garden and function room and is perfect for lunch, dinner and drinks.
Unfortunately we are unable to accept online table bookings for our outdoor tables.

Loved the evening. Good food and such a lovely clean place.
Fantastic service. Served by three ladies who were most accommodating. First visit for my family although I have visited many times. They loved it too. Food always to a high standard. Thank you.
The service was terrible and took over 1 and 1/2 hours to get our meal.
A pleasant restaurant with good ambience. Sunday roast excellent as was chicken and ham pie. Service patchy. Had long wait for a drink and dessert. Absolutely tiny portion of treacle tart. Literally 3 mouthfuls for over £5. Not worth wait or price.
First visit and found it friendly with good choice and tasty food.
Very enjoyable Sunday lunch with friends. I would happily go again and recommend it to other friends.
Service and food was absolutely dreadful . Will not be going back for a while
We have been visiting the Swan regularly for about 7 years (probally paid them a packet too). The food selection is good and the staff where possible will help to vary the menu if at all possible (exchange chips for mash). We like it because the pub area is very seperate from the resturant.
On the whole the food is good as is the service. We vist about 2 x per month.
Excellent , I cannot recommend enough we stumbled across the pub s year ago and visit whenever we can, my wife also no takes her staff there for business and celebration meald
Since discovering the Black Swan last year, my family and I have visited it many times and have always had a good experience. I have recommended the venue to a number of friends, who in turn have recommended it to their friends.
Second time we've been for Sunday roast and will definitely go again. Prompt friendly service and generous portions.
A second of what will be many visits. It's a perfect halfway meeting place and never disappoints. Food and staff excellent, friendly and welcoming.
The food and service is much better than it used to be but for me still has some way to go.
Had a lovely evening with the girls and the food was gorgeous
Visited Sunday 25th @ 5.15pm. Was told there was some roast chicken left which I made the mistake of ordering! It arrived looking very unappetising & I should really have sent it back but didn't. I asked for more gravy & was brought a tiny jug, the vegetables ( apart from the red cabbage) were unidentifiable & looked as if they had been cooked a while before & reheated ( how many times I wonder?) I have to say the chicken was delicious, not a complete waste of money then!! We had previously stopped going to The Black Swan after the “refurbishment” because it had really gone downhill but then went for a Christmas celebration with our club & were pleasantly surprised & everything was great. This was due to Ryan being there to supervise & who had, he told us been brought in to sort things out . He certainly did so then but unfortunately standards seem to have slipped again. I notice on all the reviews I’ve just read on all the complaints W Hall, manager of Black Swan thanks people for their comments & says he will take them on board!! Clearly he hasn’t & is just letting the reputation of this once lovely place slide lower & lower. The only way you can save this situation is to bring Ryan back & keep him there & even then get a mystery diner to go in from time to time.
Requested a quiet corner as all my companions have hearing difficulties.Accommodated at the back of the dining area away from the bar. Drinks order taken swiftly . Food was good with a waitress who delivered what we requested. £62 for 4 including drinks.
Always the same... great food and fantastic service. We wasn't rushed in anyway, but the staff are attentive enough to cater for our every needs...... only one little niggle they don't get the mojhitos right .... that's the only criticism.....
Love it here but really missed the Cobb salad menu change
The service was extremely slow, starter terrible, main ok, desert poor. They added 2 drinks to the bill which we hadn't had. The manager came and spoke to us after we complained and was very polite. Did discount the bill. Would not go back again.
Couldn't fault the food or the waitress but the wait was long and boring, After the starter the waitrss, a pleasant female, asked if we would like our main course right away, we said yes but it didn'happen. At the time I would reckon that the restaurant was only 10% full. Not good enough by any means. To sum up - Good food. Pleasant surroundings. But lousy service from the kitchen.
I have been here a lot lately and the food and servicr have always been great . Tonight my friend had a very poor chilli con carni and our service was slow but our salads were beautiful.
Just three of us for light supper.
We had ribs, pate and spicy chicken bruschetta as starters. All good, but with thin crisp bread it would have been better to have softer butter.
Two small fish and chips and one lamb skewer as a main.
Fish batter was light and tasty, but a bit oily - could have done with being drained a little.
Salad was very dry, just loads of rocket, sprinkle of chilies and few slices of red onion. Needed a dressing and way too much rocket.
We did let the waiter and waitress know, but telling us a trainee chef did the salad wasn't the most appropriate response.
However, we were well looked after and the food was generally very nice.
Friendly professional staff, not too pushy but courteous.
Varied selection of food including more than usual for vegetarian.
No complaints with the quality of the food, which is very unusual for one of the guests..
Price reasonable for quality, will return.
Ideal meeting place with plenty of parking.
Service and food was very good but very disappointed as I had requested a round quiet table on booking and our table was not round and in the main area right next door to a large party . We had to ask to be moved couldn't hear ourselves talk .
Food not up to standard, two starters not paid for due to one whitebate being over cooked, the prawn cocktail was all lettuce and tiny prawns you could hardly see, which made me feel bad having recommended the place.
Great food and service . Love all the candles
Service and food was excellent . I had the Cobb salad it was delicious
On my 73rd Birthday, we were well looked after and we all had a very good time. My 1 year old Grandson thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The Grilled Tuna was especially good.
Good food, good service, spacious between tables, plenty of parking.
We had tried the Black Swan for a lunch time snack and really enjoyed the food and ambience. This time, we decided to try the Sunday roast and we were not disappointed. Beautifully cooked meats, home made gravy and seasonal vegetables cooked perfectly. It really was the perfect Sunday lunch and our guests were also raving about it. The pub was busy, yet the service was still exceptional. We will definitely be back!
The service was very good ,but I need to complain about the small portion of chicken pie ,my friend had the same meal last week ,on both occasions the pastry is very dry and chicken was tough .On the larger size it was lovely ,
Very nice evening thanks, want at least 50 characters, bit silly.........................................................
Food was lovely, service wonderful, food was served quickly and was hot - good veggie options.
My only very slight complaint was that my mum ordered the salmon dish and it had a fair few small bones in it, she was ok with it but it might have been better for someone to have pre-warned us first- but overall we had a lovely time and thoroughly enjoyed our meal.
Having booked in advance, when we arrived we were shown to the nearest available table which was situated in a darker area of the restaurant and we also soon realised we were seated close to 2 other male customers one of whom had a really load penetrating voice. We asked if we could move to a quieter and lighter area away from this intrusion. This was not a problem so we then selected our own table. Meal was all ok and service was efficient and friendly. One slightly strange occurrence was when we ordered desserts. There was a 'Lemon Meringue Mess' advertised on the specials board which our 2 friends both ordered. After a considerable wait, during which time our coffees had arrived and were getting cold, a male member of staff came to advise us that the chef had mistakenly made the wrong dessert and instead of a Lemon Meringue Mess had made an Eton Mess. Not sure of the reason behind this as we didn't immediately notice Eton Mess featured on any of the menus. He asked if our friends would like the Eton Mess instead or would they still prefer the Lemon Meringue Mess as originally ordered. He said it wouldn't be a problem if they still wanted the Lemon Meringue Mess as the Eton Mess 'wouldn't go to waste'. They agreed to have the Eton Mess as we had already waited long enough for the desserts and no doubt the other 2 we had ordered were already prepared and waiting to be served. We were a little bemused as to why they had to announce their mistake to us and didn't just make the correct dish when they realised what had happened, whatever the reason. We have then been none the wiser!
Back to the coffees - although we ordered them at the same time as desserts, we would have not expected them to be served until AFTER we had had our desserts. A coffee is a nice thing to have to finish off a meal not to have before dessert!
Food was ok however the service was so slow. We waited an hour between starter and main course. Some of the starters we ordered had run out and the same with dessert. Very disapointed
Excellent food and good service, only criticism was they didn't inform us of items not available on the menu which was disappointing
Most important food has been very good of late and service has improved. Well done all staff.
very pleasant lunch with my husband and family on the way back from Austria. The only problem was the noise from young children and perhaps it would be a good idea to have a separate area for young families. The manager and staff were very friendly and helpful and we enjoyed meeting the new manager. I live five minutes away from the Black Swan and will be using it again, the family with us live in Oxfordshire and when on a visit to us will be happy to lunch again at the Black Swan.
Expensive but worth it for the atmosphere. Beers are very pricey so get drunk before you go and just enjoy one when your there!
The Swan is our local pub and although we don't visit on a weekly basis it has very much improved in recent times. Food & service very good. .. well done manager & staff.
