Originating back in 1239 Blackfriars Restaurant is located in a medieval friary where it served as the refectory for the friars, making it one of the oldest purpose-built dining rooms in the UK.
The restaurant serves a classic, gutsy British menu sourcing seasonal produce from local farms and markets accompanied by a large award-winning wine list. It also has an adjoining 50 seat Banquet Hall for private parties and weddings. Above the restaurant is a Cookery School and Wine/Beer/Whisky Tasting Room. See web for events.
Blackfriars was awarded; Best Sunday Lunch in Newcastle by readers of the Independent, ‘Best restaurant in the North East/Newcastle’ by readers of The Observer and Metro Newspaper. It has also gained an AA rosette, inclusion in the Which? Good Food Guide, Hardens and Michelin Guides.

Food was delicious but as we ate at 3.45 the lamb offering was very sparse, I did bring this to the attention of the staff and they did rectify by bringing some freshly cooked lamb, unfortunately it was too late.
Fantastic, this is was our second time eating here. I am a wheelchair user and the staff were fantastic. The food was amazing, as always!! We always recommend to everyone.
Great food and excellent service from waiting staff who seem to know exactly when to arrive to offer more food, drinks etc. Highly recommended.
The food was incredible and so was the service. Had the mackerel, venison, lobster & grouse. Grouse was the star of the show!
Food was fantastic. Lovely touch with the Anniversary card from the team. Thanks
Quality food but the table felt rushed. Obviously wanted the table clear as quickly as possible. Different waiters meant a lack of continuity. Elderly male waiter too close with no Covid awareness.
Expensive for what it is. Better deal for Sunday Lunch than the A La Carte menu.
One of our go to restaurants in Newcastle. Food is outstanding and the service always 5 star.
Beautiful place, extremely clean, food was fabulous, service excellent, we had the lunchtime set menu. We will definitely be back
Very nice dinner. On par with the best Newcastle has to offer. Very happy with the experience
Food was amazing! Found the drinks quite pricey, Prosecco wasn’t the best.
Our first time visiting and certainly will not be the last, we are looking to book with partners for Christmas.
What a stunning place in the middle of a vibrant city. From walking in we were well looked after, Kate was our waitress she was friendly, helpful and knowledgable about everything. A true credit to the place.
Our food was off the set menu, £25 for 3 courses, there was so many dishes to choose and none of us had food envy first time ever. Beautifully cooked and presented, portions was as to be expected we didn’t find them small at all.
Overall a great night was had. Thank you for making an average birthday into a great one.
Perfect place for a birthday celebration, cannot fault the food or the service.
The service was quick, efficient and very friendly.
The food was fantastic and the portions are really good.
Great selection of wines, beers/meads and spirits
A brilliant restaurant experience overall 10/10
This was my second time here and it didn’t disappoint, I will definitely be returning for a third time.
Lovely night and made to feel very welcome and special for my birthday celebrations
A lovely place to dine with history all around you. We are quite regular customers but today the food was not up to its usual standard - my wife's monkfish could, and
should, have been hotter; it seemed as though it had been standing for a while. My battered pollock was quite poor - the fish was fine but the batter, although crisp on the outside, was thick and just gooey inside; I left almost all of it which must have been obvious as the plates were taken away but no questions were asked about it.
We were dining with a friend who was quite happy with her meal so we didn't say anything to avoid spoiling a pleasant occasion.
We have dined here many times over the years and always found it very good indeed - unfortunately, yesterday much less so. Bill C
Food was good all be it a little on the expensive side
We had the set menu. I also had the two small glasses of wine chose to accompany my food choices. The food and wine was paired really well. The food was delicious, presentation ambience and the service were also fantastic and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend or return in the future.
Quality food & service in a lovely historic building in the centre of the city
Blackfriars is a hidden gem. The building, service and food were 5 star. Staff very friendly and attentive.
Made our anniversary lunch very special. X
Brilliant experience at the restaurant. It’s a lovely venue with really good quality food. The service was the cherry on top of the cake though, all of the staff were brilliant, knowledgable, fun and genuinely cared about delivering a top quality service.
I really enjoyed my food, only criticism is that it could have been slightly warmer. Also lattes were made with cold milk instead of milk being heated. Staff very friendly and helpful.
Daughters sausages sent back as appeared under cooked, everyone else was finished before hers came back out. Lamb wasn’t great. Probably won’t be back as there are lots of places that offer far superior food, and cheaper.
Once again another top class, this times with friends, who both said one of the best Sunday lunches they have had for a very long time
Excellent food and attentive staff who are on the ball.
Blackfriar's menu and quality of food on weekdays is sensational - we really love everything about it. We did not feel however that the Sunday lunch was anything special - indeed the quality of the meat (lamb) we felt was poor and the presentation not particularly good - you couldn't see what you were eating! The Yorkshire puddings were soft and not crispy at all.
The desserts were of course from the standard menu - the cheesecake and the sticky toffee pudding of the highest quality and highest presentation. Fantastic
The atmosphere of the restaurant is great. Food was amazing, backed by the best service. Would definitely go back
We have been coming to this venue for two years. We participate in events and spend time in the restaurant. Every visit is outstanding. The good food and ambience are great but what makes the place outstanding is the staff!
We had a great birthday date night, lovely food and wine with great service and friendly staff. Couldn’t ask for more!
Lovely relaxed meal before theatre. Friendly clean smart staff. First time visit and will certainly return.
Great service, scallop starter and cocktails both really nice. Other dishes were quite tasty too, beautiful location but generally a little over priced.
Took advantage of the early bird evening menu available before 7pm. There was a good selection for all courses - I settled on goats cheese with beetroot and walnuts to start amd the filet steak main (there was an additional charge for the filet). Very tasty and looking forward to returning
Great food as always. The service was a tad slow but acceptable. Waiter kicking up a fuss when asking for tomato sauce with chips a little rude if honest but didn’t really bother me at the time as I was enjoying my food with family. Only on reflection does it seem poor service and a little unacceptable.
We had an excellent visit.
Fab food. Staff were first class.
Great service lovely atmosphere
Fabulous food and great service. I have a food allergy and they really looked after me. Look forward to going again!
Excellent food and service, great atmosphere. Highly recommended.
Perfect birthday meal for my daughter. Food excellent. Service brilliant as always.
Chose set menu. Food was delicious, staff friendly & attentive.
Beautiful setting, would highly recommend a visit.
Sunday lunch menu has something for everyone
Mackerel pate amazing
Lamb not as good as expected too thin and flavour lacking
Belly pork best I've had
Chocolate pudding chocolate custard was delicious
Service was attentive
Definitely a good choice
We waited over an hour for our mains. No one came over to communicate with us. We eventually had to ask where the food was. A meal that was meant to be relaxing turned into a race to finish our meals in time for my in-laws to catch their train.
Delicious food and excellent service
