Fantastic restaurant with excellent ambience and delicious food. The pricing was decent.
Myself and my partner came for the set menu, the food was under seasoned, visually poor and disappointing, the service was cold and unwelcoming. As well, to top it off, I asked to take the rest of our bottle of wine home, and our server said she had thrown the cork away, but would we mind if she picked it out of the bin! Absolute shambles from start to finish, and very overpriced.
Amazing restaurant. Great value set menu. Remarkable variety of food. Historical setting. Staff always very helpful. Love this restaurant. First choice for eating out in Newcastle. Highly recommend.
Lunch time at Blackfriars on a snowy Monday.
Venue was relaxing. Warm, quiet and comfortable.
Food was excellent. Nice choice on set menu, great presentation, tasty and good value.
Service was great. Lovely friendly staff, timing perfect, not rushed and made to feel welcome and valued.
Excellent venue, service(staff are brilliant),and ambience. Not cheap but thoroughly recommended.
Had Sunday lunch here. Service was excellent, attentive without being pushy. Food was very good, although my lamb was a little bland. Next time I'll choose the beef or chicken which my partner really liked. Nice atmosphere - busy but not noisy.
Wonderful food in a lovely building
The food was beautifully cooked , well presented and absolutely delicious. The staff were attentive and
friendly. This restaurant certainly deserves a five star rating.
Lovely friendly professional staff and the most amazing food I've had in a good while , was a perfect treat.
Fantastic location steeped in history which only adds to the whole dining experience. Booking was very easy on line . The service was very good, the waitress knowledgeable of the menu and able to give suggestions when we told her of our preferences.
The food was extremely tasty, full of flavour and well seasoned. I only managed 2 courses but those in our group who ate 3 said the sticky toffee pudding was to die for! This restaurant is my go to place in Newcastle whenever I want a dining experience a bit more upmarket than the usual fare available in the rest of Newcastle without breaking the bank. I will certainly be going back.
This was a trip to celebrate my mum's 70th birthday and Blackfriars was the perfect location to celebrate it. We had the lunch set menu and were blown away with the quality of the food. The best thing about this visit though was the lady, who looked after us so well. She made my mum feel very special and ensured our visit to Blackfriars was worthy of the 5 star rating it deserved. My only regret is that I cannot mention her by name as I didn't ask. Blackfriars is well worth a visit.
This restaurant never fails to deliver ! I have dined here on numerous occasions and always enjoyed everything about Blackfriars.
As ever, high quality food, attentive (but not obtrusive) staff, and a warm setting on a cold evening.
Not the cheapest place to eat but not over the top expensive either.
We were greeted with a warm friendly welcome, the lunchtime menu had lots to choose from and the food tasted amazing we can't wait to go back next time we are in Newcastle.
A lovely Sunday lunch, food was excellent, great value for money. The service was first class.
The ambience of the restaurant itself was nice as in the decor I have been a few times before and the food has been nice. On this occasion the food wasn't even hot barely lukewarm and it was not up to standard the lamb was undercooked and tasted off and the belly pork was very small, chewy and extremely salty. The vegetables were watery and the dessert wasn't hot either and overly spiced. The dinners were mixed up i.e. some of my party had dietary requirements and these were not reflected in our order. The service was awful we had to ask for everything and we were ignored when trying to catch our servers attention, we waited 20 minutes just for a dessert menu even though we had paid for a 3 course meal we were never asked. We were also never asked if we wanted anymore drinks. We were first in the restaurant so it wasn't overly busy. A discretionary charge of over £10 was added to the bill in hindsight we should of asked for this to be removed but we just wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. Won't be returning anytime soon.
Lovely to be recognised immediately after revisiting a year and a half after getting married there. They do a lot of weddings so bonus points to management. Staff were attentive and food delicious as always, if slightly on the pricey side but as it was a special occasion we could justify it. Happy to return again :)
Lovely Valentines meal with the girlfriend. Something a little different from the norm. Portions a tad on the small side but definitely quality over quantity. Will definitely be returning soon!
Everything from entering to leaving was fantastic. Food was amazing and staff where really friendly and knowledgeable. Can't wait to go back.
Lovely food from the Al a Carte menu with good wine ensured we had a very enjoyable evening with very attentive service. Will definitely go back.
Last weekend we had family over from Ireland and we decided to go somewhere lovely for a meal on Friday night. From the moment we got there, the waiter Matthew, was rude and made us feel very unwelcome. We ordered our drinks and food and about half an hour later we got our starters but still no sign of drinks. Eventually our drinks came just before our main course. My husband and I ordered the share board of steak which came tepid and at £55, we were very disappointed. Matthew continued to be rude throughout the meal and we left with very sour tastes in our mouths after paying a £300 bill. Would never return, would not recommend!
Good food, good service, knowledgable staff for food and drink and historic surroundings.
Excellent food. Staff were friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Good pairing of digestif with dessert.
Excellent service and very enjoyable meal.
Wonderful old building, cosy nooks, staff friendly and knowledgeable.
Wine list good, tasty local beers, selection of whiskeys. No brandy or cognac though, which is a surprising omission for a restaurant of that quality!
Main course excellent. Desserts a little lacking in choice and imagination.
Ambience and lighting all perfect.
Music though - really not needed in a restaurant. However, it was low enough not to spoil conversation. In that case why bother?
We had a lovely evening at Blackfriars, however my steak was very undercooked and when it was taken away to be further cooked, it was returned well done and inedible.
The customer service was fantastic (removing the steak from the bill) and we will be back especially to sample the Sunday lunch.
Great food as always. Loved the opportunity to treat my family to a delicious meal
Superb staff - friendly, professional and efficient. Excellent food each time I visit.
Yet another fantastic experience. It was my birthday and they served me a complementary glass of prosecco and even put a candle in my desert with Happy Birthday written on the plate...staff singing Happy birthday!! Lovely touch to a great meal. Can't wait to come back.
Excellent service. Good value. Especially the early menu
Great service , welcoming , good food , good atmosphere.
Warm , friendly , nice atmosphere and above all the food quality was very good.
Fantastic service wonderful food great venue a gem in the heart of Newcastle
Great value meal. Excellent service throughout.
Assumed "fizz" given on arrival (without being asked) was complimentary, surprised to find it on the bill
Another outstanding lunch at Blackfriars. 3 course lunch special so much to choose from and a bargain at £18 each. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. We have never had a bad meal here!
I booked the restaurant for my sister's birthday lunch and was very impressed with the friendly service and the food was really good. I'm always critical as my partner was a chef so we are usually difficult to impress! Everything about Blackfriars is to be recommended. Wouldn't hesitate to go back.
Lovely Sunday Lunch! I would recommend. We will be back soon. Thank you
Had Sunday lunch here. Veg cooked perfectly and a lovely selection and just the right size portion. Meat pink and tender. Only criticism, which I often having when eating out at various places for Sunday lunch, is the Yorkshire pudding. It was far too hard and crispy - usually a sign of being reheated. Staff were very professional and helpful. One of our best Sunday lunches.
Best starter I’ve ever had in my life (corned beef) and the sticky toffee desert was also really good. Was a bit disappointed in the main carvery meal. I had the chicken which was really nice but my boyfriend’s beef was practically raw and the Yorkshire puddings were really stale. The service was amazing but if I wanted a carvery again I’d probably go somewhere else
Great staff, food excellent, nice feel to the place, quite good value, first time and not the last, we Even got a anaversery card and drink on the house, loved it
