Lovely ambience, food spot on, service & staff canny.
Had a smashing lunch with my wife, son & his girlfriend.
Defo recommend it
VERY FRIENDLY STAFF AND FANTASTIC FOOD. THE PRESENTATION WAS GOOD AND PORTION SIZES JUST RIGHT
I took my mum for a surprise birthday lunch and she absolutely loved it. Staff were welcoming and friendly, food was amazing and very good value from the set lunch menu.
Before we left she treated me and my husband to a £50 GV as a Xmas present and I can’t wait!!!!
Was a little disappointed in the Sunday lunch. Having been several times before on an evening. Because there was 8 of us we needed to pre order. Which was OK. We pre ordered and two special requests were made. One dietry requirement and one request for the vegetables to be separate. Neither of these requests were actioned. All lunches came with vegetables plated up. So no choice of what to have. Would have been better if the veg was separate. Portions very small. It was all tasty though.
Most tables have very strong lighting which tends to shine very brightly in your eyes regardless of table or seat, which makes for a very unrelaxibg meal. Also the restaurant was very hot. But if not for those reasons 5* across the board
Aesthetically Blackfriars is beautiful but the food does not live up to expectation. Our starters were good but lukewarm! My main dish of lamb was fatty and sat on an awful white sauce which is did not need and the leeks were burnt and not very edible. Also, again the food was lukewarm. My daughters beef was very good though. The petit fours were a disappointment being only 1 which was good the chocolate fudge and the brown flakes they sat on were hard to pull off the sweets and also inedible.
The service was good but one of the waiters kept pushing other things to order which we both did not like!! All in all beautiful building/restaurant but the food poor. We eat at the Botanist the evening before and everything was 10/10.
Set lunch menu of three courses and a glass of fizz was very good value. Service was attentive and efficient. The restaurant is comfortable. Its historic significance is of added interest.
Wonderful food and excellent service
Return already booked.
We had the set lunch menu which was great value for money, the quality of the food was superb and the service friendly and efficient. Would definitely recommend.
Absolutely fantastic meal. I was entertaining a friend from Vietnam. She was most impressed! Will be coming back again soon!
That was my first time at the Blackfriars. I went for a special occasion: have a Sunday roast with my husband and my mother, who was visiting me. For the three of us the Sunday roast was good, but not remarkable. The starter with goats cheese was very good, but for us unfortunately the main dishes (we ordered different roasts: lamb, beef and chicken) weren’t at the same standard as the starter and the custard tart was quite bland, but thanks to the blackberry sorbet it wasn’t so bad. Overall, we believe the Blackfriars is overrated and overpriced for what they do.
Booked for evening meal ...service was fab as was the food ...and my non alcoholic gin went down a treat ...fab place and will return
Very good service and the food was excellent if a little salty for our taste.
Excellent food, amazing flavours. Need to ensure white wine is chilled, and steaks cooked to order.
We were time bounded as heading to St James Park and the England international, staff got us through in 90 minutes but at no time did we feel rushed, food and service was excellent
Great service as always Nd wonderfully tasty food, plates not overloaded but perfectly satisfied after 2 courses.
A midweek treat, delicious food and it was hard to choose what to eat. Friendly staff and very attentive service (and very polite service). A pleasant atmosphere, relaxed, and atmospheric decor in the ancient refectory building. Highly recommended
Nice food with good service. My problem with it is that with the adverts, deals and timetables on the table, some of which were tatty or had spilt drink from previous meals on, it makes you feel you're in a beefeater or harvester rather than a reasonably high end restaurant.
Food was very good though and the service was very friendly and helpful and the price was reasonable for the quality of the food
Based on a previous visit, I chose Blackfriars for a ladies’ lunch to celebrate a good friend’s 60th birthday. I am not from Newcastle and have limited experience of restaurants in the area. All 5 of us enjoyed the experience. We were greeted warmly, given a lovely table in a nook, and my friend was given a celebratory glass of fizz, all of which set just the right tone. The menu had something for all of us, and most of us chose the two-glass wine pairings. The service was very professional and attentive, the waiter/sommelier was especially knowledgeable about each of the paired wines. We all enjoyed our meals, which were well cooked and presented, and good value for the price we paid (the two course menu was £18/£19), including fresh sourdough bread and butter. My only niggle is having to pay extra for side dishes, which were fairly small portions. Overall, Blackfriars did us proud for our friend’s surprise birthday lunch, and the journey from Edinburgh and Derby just for lunch was decidedly worth the trip. Thank you!
By far, my favourite restaurant in Newcastle. Never fails to impress, the food, drinks, service, absolutely everything. I'll definitely be back.
Good quality food with appropriate wines, we tried the 3 course early evening set course, 3 courses were enough to fill without feeling too full, and the quality was superb, with a quality wine list. Staff always helpful all of the years I've been coming to Blackfriars. Very pleasant dining experience.
Been here on lots of occasions. Love the olde worlde feel of the restaurant that other more modern restaurants lack. Staff are always pleasant and welcoming. Love the food. Very good value for money. On our last visit we were given a complimentary glass of Prossecco as it was our Wedding Anniversary. Very kind gesture!
We will definitely be returning in the near future.

3 hours for dinner. Many items from menu ran out. Very nice and well-meaning staff but clearly over their heads on the night we ate there. By far our most expensive dinner in the UK and slowest service/fewest choices. We may have just come on an off night. I did have one of the most delightful desserts here—box of petit fours.
The food was extremely delicious and the service was outstanding. Can't wait to return.
We enjoyed a wonderful lunch here on Saturday before going to the theatre starters were very tasty we had the corned beef and fish cakes.
For mains we had gammon and mussels which we all enjoyed.
The sweets were divine and the service was excellent throughout the meal.
Thank you to all of the staff for a wonderful lunch we would all recomend black Friars to everyone.
Tasty menu and a beautiful venue. The staff were attentive and friendly. No complaints!
Restaurant cold, waited 25 minutes for our starter, was told it was because a big party had arrived (why do THEY get precedence over other diners...?)
Main courses were cold.
Fantastic food and service as always! We visited for my sons birthday 18th birthday and exam results celebrations and he was treated to a complimentary glass of fizz. The staff went out of their way to make it a special evening and we very much look forward to returning.
Perfect setting. Food flavoursome and well presented . Outstanding service. Early evening menu very good value. Would recommend
Fantastic food, wine and initial service was excellent. Unfortunately our server became distracted with another table of customers next to us and left us with finished plates for quite some time and then again when we were ready to pay bill. She was chatting to them and seemed to totally forget we were there, we got up to go to the till in order to move things along. A shame as it was a lovely evening and experience, but a lot of money to spend for that service.
Oasis in the city, ambience and food a delight. Service exemplary. Really enjoyed.
Superb location excellent food and great service, Sunday lunch menu is excellent value with 3 courses at £21 been twice and very happy both times.
Well balanced menu, good quality food though slightly larger portions would improve experience, friendly and professional staff in lovely surroundings
Always fantastic in every way. Perfect for a special occasion
Lovely restaurant we’ve been few times, never for the al a carte before, but the food was beautiful, a little bit pricey but as a treat it was worth it
Made welcome good service excellent food
Excellent value for money in a wonderful location.
Lovely atmosphere! Well worth a visit.
