Good food in a unusual but lovely location in the city centre
Lovely afternoon in a relaxing and friendly environment. Food was really tasty, especially the Beef Wellington, with delicious black pudding mash. Good selection of affordable wines. Staff were attentive but not too overbearing, and service was well timed. Good location, and a lovely separate bar area for pre or post-meal drinks.
Excellent value for money, lovely set menu food & good service.
Excellent first greeting from reception staff .
Excellent service throughout very friendly yet professional.
Nice ambience for a Friday lunch time .
Used to love this restaurant but last two visits have been disappointing. Found main course of chicken and potato rosti very salty . Did not enjoy .
Great location, staff fantastic, food excellent. I'd like to mention how good our waiter was, weel done Nicholas.
Lovely staff it was my husbands birthday they went above and beyond to make him feel special, food was delicious
Place needs a re vamp. It’s starting to look a bit worn and yes I understand it’s an old building and it shouldn’t look brand new but the flooring and the general decor is now worn and looking a bit dirty. Food was poor. Beef was far too thinly sliced so I could barely taste the beef at all. Yorkshire puddings were dry and over done. Gravy average at best. Roast potatoes were dry and overdone too. Rest of the veg was bland. Staff were pleasant enough. Bar area where we sat when we waited for our table was floor to ceiling with dirty glasses. Just an overall woeful Sunday dinner for a place that used to be so good. Far too much competition now in Newcastle to be serving a bang average dinner.
My visit to Blackfriars for Sunday lunch with my daughter and husband, was sadly disappointing. Unfortunately only 2 of our order of 3 roast dinners was passed through to the kitchen. The waitress was very apologetic. This wasn't a problem, other than we naturally wanted to eat together (and so the 2 plates served were removed) and I was very clear with both the waiter and waitress that we wanted 3 fresh plates. 10-15 minutes later, 3 plates were served and it was apparent and confirmed by the waiter that 2 plates were the originals served 10 -15 minutes earlier. What followed was 2 more senior waiters/manager trying to brow beat us into accepting that these were fresh plates - the luke-warm food, congealed gravy and burning hot plates from sitting on the pass, told a different story of course. Added to that I had taken a very good look at the dishes before they were returned. The waitress came back again and apologised (and it was not her fault) and when I asked why these 2 plates would be so hot, she said it was because they had been on the pass ........ The Manager(?) came again trying to persuade that these were fresh plates, by which time I was thoroughly fed up of discussing it and the meal was ruined. He was offering drinks to make up for it - the implication being that they were 'on the house' - not so when the bill came. He went to great lengths to explain that he had removed the discretionary service charge and the 2 desserts (the additional cocktail which my daughter had asked for at his pressing, was still charged for!). The bill was still just under £85. It would certainly have been more appropriate to remove the charge for the roast dinners. I didn't want to discuss it any further in front of my daughter, when it was her birthday celebration, but I emailed the restaurant that evening to explain my view. I received a very unsatisfactory response and no response at all to my further email.
Outstanding and fantastic value. Food and service superb and what a building!
We luckily managed to get in at Blackfriars with a last minute booking and I am so glad we did! One of the best meals we have had at a restaurant. The places itself is beautiful, it's exactly the sort of decor we love, very homely! The red wine we had been recommended by the staff was absolutely delicious and went down a treat! Thanks again to all the staff for being so friendly and the kitchen staff for making our night with some of the best food weve had x
Beautiful tasteful food, little mix up with the tables where another table almost got my bottle of wine, area was quite cold.
Lovely setting great food what more for a Saturday night
Was nice but not outstanding
Fabulous food and the lunch set menu is excellent value for money. Beautiful building and surroundings too.
What a treat.
Such a warm welcome and attentive service throughout.
Wonderful food and great value for money.
Will be making this a regular lunch destination.
Superb food in a lovely setting prepared with great care and attention.
Would love to go back but unfortunately live several hundred miles away.
Can wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant.
I love Blackfriars. Excellent food, beautiful dining room, fantastic service. What more could you want? Oh, and those triple-cooked chips were on another planet!
Excellent service and a nice friendly atmosphere. Will definitely return.
First time we have been seated furthest from the entrance, upstairs and really made a difference to us and to the ambience of the whole evening. Wonderful choice of menu for starters, main and desserts. When we finally made our choices we were not disappointed. Presentation was lovely, portions good and the tastes were delicious. Compliments to the chefs.
It was a first time at Blackfriars for our great niece and a celebration for her too. She enjoyed her food very much and the mock tail she had.
Thank-you for a great evening.
As a visitor to Newcastle I booked Blackfriars based on reviews and was not disappointed. My boss & colleagues enjoyed the meal and atmosphere. The early evening menu was great value.
We came here many years ago and have fond memories. Remember the food was great and always planned to come back. This visit was underwhelming, the food was ok but a bit ‘bitsy’ and felt a bit like a throw back to nouvelle cuisine.
Luckily I was not hungry at all as the salmon main had very little food on the plate and it was mainly vinegary marinated items.
So sadly should have kept it a nice memory and not come back.
The service was fine and the place itself has its own charm.
Amazing food and place would definitely be going back.
Fabulous food and excellent service, well worth a visit!
Been to Blackfriars on many occasions, but this was the first poor experience.
Portion sizes on starters and main were too small, vegetables with main were cold and had to be sent back.
The bill was adjusted accordingly and hopefully this was just a one off.
First visit and won't be my last .
Everything was excellent from helpful staff to outstanding food and service.
We chose from the set menu for lunch & found the choice to be very good. The food was perfectly cooked & the presentation added to the enjoyment of the meal. A special mention to the staff who were welcoming & attentive . A great restaurant & the set menu is very good value .
Expensive for no food. Try to be to fancy in presentation at the expensive of getting enough food to eat. I had to stop to get something to eat after I left I was so hungry. I ordered the venison for the amount I paid it was literally 3 bites of food. A complete joke. They had squash purée and my wife and I joked that one squash would serve the whole evening. We literally had a teaspoon or less of squash. Worst dining experience ever. I joked to my wife after dinner I was going to protest out front with a placard don’t eat here a rip off!
Booked last minute as friends from HK wanted a good British unique restaurant. They were not disappointed .They loved the menu & tried Grouse for the first time . Staff polite / knowledgable of the ingredients / efficient . We were not rushed even though last sitting on a Monday night. A 5* restaurant in a 5* setting
Now one of my favourite places in Newcastle city centre for Sunday lunch. Great food, great service, super atmosphere, and something a little different. Really decent selection of wines too, which unfortunately I didn't get a chance to taste as I was driving. The three-course option is the best bet, as the portions aren't huge. Definitely worth a visit!
Impressive historic location, good food with great service, well worth a visit.
Fabulous restaurant and staff. Exceptional food. We absolutely love it here. The Saturday lunchtime experience is brilliant. Thank you Iona and her team today.
Had a lovely afternoon, starting off in the cocktail lounge but had to go and ask about our table after our booking time.
Great cocktails and fantastic starters but letdown but main courses. Should’ve had the fish and chips- which I know is excellent. The nut roast was overpowered by some beetroot jam which was all you could taste. It was my friends first visit and as a vegetarian she was looking forward to it. She did try to eat it but was persevering so gave up after a few tastes. The staff did take it off the bill though – which we thanked them for. My lemon sole was nice, but the “celeriac cous cous” was weird so I just had a bit of fish and spinach. Only later I realised it was supposed to come with caper butter but there were none, unless they were in the couscous. The excellent chips almost made up for it! But it didn’t leave us in the mood for the pudding which we’d planned. And we asked about the Prosecco deal, which I’ve had before, the waitress accidentally said oh yes “the cheap Prosecco deal” - so our treat wasn’t quite what we had wanted. It probably was the same nice Prosecco I’ve had previously but we both tasted it very warily wondering if it was the cheap Prosecco and we ended up not drinking it. The ice creams and sorbets we had were very good though, and good coffee.
I have been before and will go back, it’s a great place- and the staff are lovely- they were a bit distracted by another customer on our visit and it was a shame; just a one off I think.
Hadn’t been in the drinks lounge before - a lovely retreat!
Excellent value and food. Surroundings outstanding
Lovely ambience, food spot on, service & staff canny.
Had a smashing lunch with my wife, son & his girlfriend.
Defo recommend it
VERY FRIENDLY STAFF AND FANTASTIC FOOD. THE PRESENTATION WAS GOOD AND PORTION SIZES JUST RIGHT
I took my mum for a surprise birthday lunch and she absolutely loved it. Staff were welcoming and friendly, food was amazing and very good value from the set lunch menu.
Before we left she treated me and my husband to a £50 GV as a Xmas present and I can’t wait!!!!
Was a little disappointed in the Sunday lunch. Having been several times before on an evening. Because there was 8 of us we needed to pre order. Which was OK. We pre ordered and two special requests were made. One dietry requirement and one request for the vegetables to be separate. Neither of these requests were actioned. All lunches came with vegetables plated up. So no choice of what to have. Would have been better if the veg was separate. Portions very small. It was all tasty though.
Most tables have very strong lighting which tends to shine very brightly in your eyes regardless of table or seat, which makes for a very unrelaxibg meal. Also the restaurant was very hot. But if not for those reasons 5* across the board
Aesthetically Blackfriars is beautiful but the food does not live up to expectation. Our starters were good but lukewarm! My main dish of lamb was fatty and sat on an awful white sauce which is did not need and the leeks were burnt and not very edible. Also, again the food was lukewarm. My daughters beef was very good though. The petit fours were a disappointment being only 1 which was good the chocolate fudge and the brown flakes they sat on were hard to pull off the sweets and also inedible.
The service was good but one of the waiters kept pushing other things to order which we both did not like!! All in all beautiful building/restaurant but the food poor. We eat at the Botanist the evening before and everything was 10/10.
