Blackfriars Restaurant
Gorgeous surroundings steeped in history and atmosphere. Top class in every respect but never pretentious. All ingredients are of the highest quality from the parsnips to the pork and cooked with respect and understanding.
Wonderful location and setting, as well as the service and food. Nothing like eating in a 13th century building with so much history
Wine stains on table. Waiter had stained clothes
Food tasteless. Parsnip soup not seasoned
Pork and beef poor quality
Had the Christmas lunch menu. Felt very rushed, 3 courses in under 50 minutes! Food was ok but lukewarm and not good value for price paid.
First of all we have also come here for our pre-Xmas meal and never had an issue. However, this time on arrival the music was extremely loud. We were sat beneath a speaker. My dad is hard of hearing so we asked to be moved to a different table. There were no available tables so the waitress said she would turn the music down, which we were happy with. However, instead she actually turned the music off! Okay then. As its December there is only the option of a 3-course fixed festive meal. I have to say the starters and desserts were fine. However, it was the main dish that was the issue. All three of us had ordered the beef - this came and was extremely, and i mean extremely fatty! It was very difficult to cut the meat to the point that I was actually scratching the plate. We did complain to the waitress who offered to bring us out more meat. This was slightly better, but was still not great. When I asked why this was slightly better than the meat that we were originally given, she explained that this meat had been cooked longer! Really, that explains the pure fat and gristle running through it!! After our dessert we then ordered coffees which was when the restaurant chose to turn the music up full blast, given us the feeling "right now get out". Incidentally the gentleman at the table behind us also had an issue with his beef. He was offered a supplement reduction. When I went to pay our bill, there was no supplement reduction offered. I queried this with our waitress given the other gentleman had been given this when he complained about the sub-standard meal to which the waitress replied "sorry my colleague dealt with the bill I will take this off for you". However, she only took one supplement off instead of for the three of us! At this point I just gave up and vowed never to return.
We had a table of three and a fabulous evening. Food was gorgeous. Beautifully presented and very hot. Lovely staff.
The quality of good and service has never been poor.
Didnt know about the set Christmas menu £34.00 per head despite booking a few ago in advance it wasnt worth it
The house wine was in a carafe and the service charge was excessive
£96.00 for a mid week catch up was excessive
I feel they are taking advantage of the festive season without givibg anything back
We chose from the Christmas Fayre fixed price menu - all courses were fabulous and cooked to perfection. On arrival the stacked Turkey lunch doesn’t look like a lot of food but it’s high quality and very tasty leaving us both fully satisfied. That said there was enough room for a wonderful creme brûlée. The service was consistently excellent and has been the several times I’ve visited. Bar area is lovely although the bar itself was cluttered with glasses and pre ordered drinks..... just an area that could be improved but did not detract at all from the overall wonderful evening of excellent service and food
Lovely evening with a friend. Good reception into a warm and festive restaurant, complete with your complimentary Santa hats. Great selection of food on the menu and the food was delicious, attentive staff. I’ll be back again.
atmosphere lovely & Christmassy(free santa hats!!)Really interesting & tasty menu,
staff attentive & friendly Thank-you.
Beautiful food. Wine recommended was fab. Lovely staff. We really enjoyed our visit to Blackfriars.
Great food and service. Went for son's graduation lunch and were not disappointed after reading reviews. Very atmospheric building with enthusiastic staff, especially the bartender, who couldn't do enough to help. The scallop starter was beautifully cooked and very tasty, I had turkey which was lovely with all the Christmas veg, my wife and son had the duck which was a little over cooked but tasty and lots of great veg and sauce. Sticky toffee pudding was delish too. Good value wine selection and well stocked bar for aperitifs and digestives as well.
Food wasn't to the usual Black Friars standard, more like big party type of food you'd expect at a function, and not worth the price tag. One member of staff stunk of BO which was far from pleasant in a restaurant. The 10% service charge added to the bill was a surprise - and although it's discretionary, it would have been too embarrassing to ask to remove it. I have a work night out booked for 4 guests but will be cancelling in favour of another venue
I couldn't believe it had been over 30 years since I'd visited this place, I don't know why I left it so long.
It certainly didn't disappoint. The overall look/atmosphere of the bar and restaurant was fabulous. The food was perfect as was the service, I couldn't fault it. I will be going back soon.
Great service by friendly staff. Great food. Will visit again when next in Newcastle
We had a lovely time. Everything was very good but we were disappointed to find only Christmas menu available on 29th November. When we booked it said Christmas menu throughout December and we had our eye on food from the normal menu. It will not stop us going back though.
Wonderful food and service. Always expensive but worth it!
Magical building, delicious food, excellent service. I eat here every time I visit Necastle and it never fails to delight.
We went for Sunday lunch. The setting is gorgeous, staff very friendly. The food was excellent food - shame the portion was small.
Fabulous as always, excellent food and service, been coming here for years and always been amazing
Not as good as expected
Lamb was just complete fat
Very good quality food although the portions of fish on the mains were rather mean. We had the 3 course early evening menu and it was good value considering the quality of food and service.
Lovely afternoon at Blackfriars with friends, great deal three courses with fizz every course was delicious, compliments to the chef,we will definitely be back.
Easy to book on-line or by phone. Very nice welcome when you arrive. Tables are set with shining cutlery and clean glasses. Allergy awareness of staff is very good. Plenty of time to choose from the menu, drinks list includes cocktails. Food is beautifully presented on warm plates, is delicious and we often try something because the accompaniment is slightly different from usual menus.
Ambience of the room is always lovely even when busy busy. The waiters and waitresses are discreet in serving and clearing, tidy in appearance and very polite.
The early dinner menu is excellent value for money and the a la crate has some wonderful food to try.
We had a lovely lunch. Choice on the Set Menu was really good. The food was delicious and well presented . Excellent service. Our only issue was that we felt we were slightly rushed. There wasnt much of a break between courses. I think this was because we were the last lunch booking. Would definitely go again but at a different time of day.
Thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. Very helpful and friendly service. Pleasant dining ambience.
Booked last minute for a birthday meal but was surprised with a complimentary birthday drink as well as a card
Staff were lovely as always, very attentive and provide a very good service
Food was lovely, hoping the portion can be increased in the future as it’s so tasty! Xx
Delicious food, excellent service, good value. One of my favourite restaurants in Newcastle.
Nice and warm on entering.
We ate on a Sunday so not the A la carte menu. Food good standard.
It was a nice evening however as it was our first time there I expected the greeting and service to be of a higher standard. There was 4 of us and 3 appetisers were delivered leaving 1 person to wait for theirs. Also disappointed that it was 830 on a Saturday evening and they had run out of root veg and the only alternative was butternut squash which tasted nice but lacked variety considering the chefs were stood around. We enjoyed the evening but it was not the standard expected.
We had a great experience at Blackfriars, the restaurant has such a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. The staff were all friendly and the food was amazing!
Took 4 guests all of whom thoroughly enjoyed their meal and good service.
Only thing was that very near to another table where a young man had a very carrying voice and overpowered our conversation to a degree. Realise that this can happen and not much you can do about it.
Food was excellent only disappointment no orange sorbet to accompany chocolate brownie, I asked if I could have bannana ice cream but was advised running short on that. I opted for pear sorbet which was lovely with brownie but would have preferred orange as stated on menu. Complimentary glass of prosecco and birthday card was a lovely touch. We arrived 30mins early intended to have a drink at the bar but was advised our table was ready so we decided to go straight to our table, unsure what happened but whilst having our starters got call from restaurant enquiringly why I hadn't arrived or cancelled!!!!
There were 4 of us for lunch and we all found it a superb experience. The food and service were outstanding as always, and the venue itself amazing.
Very, very enjoyable birthday lunch with my wife. This is an ideal restaurant for those special occasions.
I thought the place was brilliant, with the setting and age of the place quite a unique experience. The food was really tasty however thought for the price of it, it was very small portions and left feeling hungry even though we had 3 courses i.e. poached pear it was really small and only half of a pair, where was the other half?? Venison steak, 3 slices, with one end nice and charred but other end was just a slice so clearly other portions taken off a piece. So nice taste but lacked the wow factor.
Very good food and attentive staff . Value for money
Lunch with colleagues, staff were very attentive and polite. All food and selected wine choices were amazing.
Within walking distance of station, quick service, polite, efficient and friendly. Lovely lunch time choices and very reasonable.
