Originating back in 1239 Blackfriars Restaurant is located in a medieval friary where it served as the refectory for the friars, making it one of the oldest purpose-built dining rooms in the UK.
The restaurant serves a classic, gutsy British menu sourcing seasonal produce from local farms and markets accompanied by a large award-winning wine list. It also has an adjoining 50 seat Banquet Hall for private parties and weddings. Above the restaurant is a Cookery School and Wine/Beer/Whisky Tasting Room. See web for events.
Blackfriars was awarded; Best Sunday Lunch in Newcastle by readers of the Independent, ‘Best restaurant in the North East/Newcastle’ by readers of The Observer and Metro Newspaper. It has also gained an AA rosette, inclusion in the Which? Good Food Guide, Hardens and Michelin Guides.

Even though we attended during a full Restaurant Week evening the service and food was of the highest quality with high praise for the staff for their efficiency and knowledge.
Always consistently good food.
Not cheap, but as the cliche goes - you get what you pay for.
There's a reason this place has survived so long (along with its partner restaurants)
The food on offer and that served to us was excellent. All staff were exceptional and interesting to talk to.
This visit was for my sisters birthday, she’s never been before. Loved the food, setting and the staff were really friendly and helpful.
A perfect setting for a perfect meal.
We arrived not long after the place opened for lunch on the Tuesday of restaurant week. After checking our reservation we were shown to our table and a drinks order taken. The drinks were placed on the table and the waitress took the order for the starter and main courses. My wife and I both choose a terrine of ham which was delicious. This was followed by belly pork accompanied with creamed potatoes and parsnips. We ordered a side of green veg. It was all very well cooked and tasted divine. We were then presented with the menus to chose a dessert. My wife had a fruit and ginger crumble whilst I choose a sticky toffee pudding topped with banana ice cream. We both enjoyed our desserts. It is 5 years since we last visited Blackfriars and I certainly I not going to wait 5 years to return.
Very good food
Very good experience
Good value for money in restaurant
Delicious fishcake starter and beef main course
Highly recommended to all to try and enjoy
Excellent service. Would definitely return, food was great. Belly pork was a little tougher than I’d like but still nice
Booked early at Blackfriars for restaurant week and were glad we did because it was very busy. The food was gorgeous, our waiter was very friendly and helpful. We had a great table that was in a corner and so out of the way. I thought the wine was a bit pricey; although that seems the norm now! Great night
The food and service were superb in a wonderful setting.
We were seated in the Banquet hall, we all had a lovely evening
It was great
We had a really lovely experience and were delighted to be able to go during restaurant week as it did make it more affordable for us.
We enjoyed an excellent lunch at Blackfriars during Newcastle Restaurant week. The food was delicious and the service was attentive, friendly and efficient. We will be returning!
Service was excellent and food really tasty and well presented.
A must go to restaurant if you haven't already experienced.
Very relaxing atmosphere.
Very friendly staff to serve and the food was absolutely delicious we enjoyed it and will call again
Was very busy due to restaurant week
But they didn’t take our drinks order for 30 mins. Had taken our food and we had to chase to order drinks
No steak knives were given but they were to other tables
Very good service, food was delicious but very small portions. Restaurant 8s beautiful inside
Lovely service very polite. The music was just perfect and the play list was excellent. The food was exceptional. The only slight set back was it was a little to dark in the banquet hall. We had a memorable meal and will definitely be back.
Thank you Blackfriars.
How fabulous from start to finish. Food and service were amazing
The food was delicious and the staff were very friendly. Excellent experience.
Food was superb.Staff were so attentive and have a great knowledge of the wine they select for you.
Absolutely lovely food with great service and ambience
Would recommend to anyone
Lovely food and excellent service from John and Dan
Gorgeous setting and fabulous food
Well worth a visit
Dare I say the only thing wrong was that I couldn't fit in any more food.
Lovely afternoon, happy attentive staff, wonderful food, beautiful location and ambience.
Disappointed. Basket of bread with 2 tiny scabby bits in whilst other diners had plenty of proper slices. Chef forgot to put part of the main on our plate so we had ask for it and was cold.
Lush food. Interesting options. Will go again. The scallop and ham hock pie was to die for
Booked for lunch, had the set lunch menu and choices were fantastic. Great choice of reasonably priced wines.
Service was brilliant. Lovely relaxed atmosphere only niggle was a draft from main entrance door every time it was opened but staff were quick to remedy and put a portable radiator on next to our table which worked a treat.
Overall a fantastic dining experience
Lovely food and excellent service . My mother doesn’t like cheese but had wanted the fish dish with came with cheesy potatoes which they happily changed . Had main courses and deserts for 3 of us which we all enjoyed . Would definitely recommend.
We have been going to blackfriars for 12 years and the food is always good. My only criticism is one main course choice for vegetarians.
The service was wonderful, the food was excellent and reasonably priced for the good quality.
Overall fantastic venue and excellent food. Set menu was great value for money.
As a party of 4 we felt very rushed- 2 courses served within 40 minutes. Wine list was also very expensive
Excellent food and wine service always great would recommend this for anyone who wants a nice meal
