Originating back in 1239 Blackfriars Restaurant is located in a medieval friary where it served as the refectory for the friars, making it one of the oldest purpose-built dining rooms in the UK.
The restaurant serves a classic, gutsy British menu sourcing seasonal produce from local farms and markets accompanied by a large award-winning wine list. It also has an adjoining 50 seat Banquet Hall for private parties and weddings. Above the restaurant is a Cookery School and Wine/Beer/Whisky Tasting Room. See web for events.
Blackfriars was awarded; Best Sunday Lunch in Newcastle by readers of the Independent, ‘Best restaurant in the North East/Newcastle’ by readers of The Observer and Metro Newspaper. It has also gained an AA rosette, inclusion in the Which? Good Food Guide, Hardens and Michelin Guides.

Excellent food, though service could have been a little slower (mains arrived as starters were cleared).
Very appreciative of the complimentary birthday fizz! Restaurant fairly quiet (it was a Tuesday evening!) but surroundings were lovely. Very reasonably priced.
Excellent service provided by a very friendly and attentive waitress who attended to our mobility needs very efficiently.
We go for lunch every Tuesday. This was the best meals we've had since all resturants
opened after lock down
Really enjoyed our lunch sat out in the garden. Great service and great food.
Came here for a birthday with a friend, lovely homemade bread and butter to start, I had the butternut squash soup which was lovely, my friend had the asparagus with duck egg and hollandaise sauce, for mains I had chicken breast with potato puree, sweetcorn, spinach and salad Verde, my friend had 2 fishcakes with chips, again both were delicious. We had cheesecake and sorbet and sticky toffee pudding with banana ice cream, again wonderful. We were given a glass of prosecco with a raspberry with it being a birthday. Very good service. We were surprised how busy it was for a Monday at 1215. Will come again.
Amazing food, great service. Lovely chilled vibe and historical building.
Love this place
Had a wonderful lunch yesterday for Father’s Day
Excellent food ambiance and service
Fantastic food and the service was second to none
We had a three course Sunday lunch which was good value for money. The staff were welcoming and friendly. They were very attentive throughout the meal. Would recommend for a family outing.
Love this place. It is always a treat. So pleased to get back 😀
First time for a birthday celebration.Food fabulous, lovely staff and good atmosphere.Would definately recommend
First trip to this restaurant. Had à la cart menu early Saturday evening. Enjoyed cocktails in the sunshine. Restaurant inside was a little dated. We were seated adjacent to the reception booth Which was disappointing as the restaurant was half empty. Delicious starter of sharing plate seafood. My main course was disappointing; stuffed noisette of lamb. The portion was tiny, the stuffing was cold and the accompanying peas were like bullets! My partner was much happier with his choice of steak which was well cooked with delicious chips. Desserts were disappointing. Once again my portion of custard tart was tiny; the custard was stodgy and poorly flavoured. The company strawberry sorbet was delicious. My husbands coconut Panacotta was watery and rather tasteless as well.
Restaurant staff are very helpful and pleasant. Overall, a pleasant evening but food was disappointing.
Great experience great atmosphere first restaurant outing post lock down and felt very safe and comfortable and the QR menu system was very easy to use (make sure you have a scanner app on your phone)food was wonderful and a fantastic wine selection aided by incredibly knowledgable staff which is always a plus.
Saturday evening visit and sometimes you can be rushed in some restaurants to free up tables not the case at Blackfriars, one downside and I think it caught a number of diners out was that only the A La Carte menu was in use which obviously is a bit more expensive.
I had the lamb which was delicious with the addition of buttered potatoes and green beans (£4 each extras) saw a very clean plate partner had the langoustines and a rather large portion arrived which sounds good but normally for langoustines I would expect maybe 3 or 4 as they are on the bigger side of shell fish think these were the babies hence the portion size still tasty and sweet, other downside to the dish it came with fries, I would normally expect a bed of pasta and it just didn’t match up.
One other thing with the langoustines there are no shell breakers with the dish (even asked incase it was left off in error) but no not available I thought it would be given for any shell fish of that ilk so a lot of the meat in claws is lost.
Drinks are good and wine selection good and cocktails are nice, could maybe do with a signature cocktail as it was a pretty standard brand generic choice.
Great evening good food and wine and wonderful company what was there not to enjoy so we will return maybe a week night just to try the alternative menu
Excellent! We had a fabulous lunch at Blackfriars to celebrate a birthday. Everything was wonderful - the food, the service, the ambiance. I am looking forward to going back.
Amazing food, Outstanding Staff and Fabulous Atmosphere… What more could you ask for?!
Another fabulous meal at Blackfriars. Been at least half a dozen times and never disappoints. Great service, fabulous food, great ambiance. I have introduced several friends to Blackfriars and they have all loved it and returned many times.
The food was delicious and the service very good. Had lunch menu which was comprehensive and catered for all but the most fussy
Excellent food and great service
We had a great evening, enjoyed excellent service, delicious food (the beef was so tender) and very good house wine. All three courses were beautifully presented and tasted really good. The bill, including service charge, was just under £300 which represented very good value for money.
We went with friends to celebrate a birthday and everything was excellent.
This is one of my favourite venues, a lttle bit special, lovely food, excellent service, beautiful surroundings
Outstanding quality of food and super friendly and efficient staff,EWAN especially worthy of praise.
Superb food in a unique setting. It was a really enjoyable experience as always.
Fabulous 3-course lunch from the set menu (fixed price) with the added bonus of 125ml glasses of wine chosen to complement our food. I had whipped goat's cheese, pickled beetroot and candied walnuts - one of my favourites from Blackfriars. The drinkers enjoyed the choices of wine to go with their ham terrine starters and mains.
Covid arrangements were fine, staff helpful and knowledgeable.
Highly recommended. Can't wait to go back!
My friend and I visited for lunch our first meal out since lockdown . It was a very enjoyable experience ! The food, the service, the atmosphere all excellent !!
Fantastic food, great layout of restaurant and great service.
This is the first time I have been to restaurant and I will be back, we enjoyed everything we had from wine to meal and even the caramelised onion butter was delicious. The food was very high standard and delicious. Service was excellent. Our waitresses was friendly and informative.
Can't fault anything about experience. Looking forward to next time.
Pleasant location eating out in the former cloister. Good Sunday lunch, well served with plenty of gravy.
Blackfriars is one of our local favourites. Sunday lunch was nice but I must admit, reluctantly, I have had better meat at other venues. A little fatty for my personal preference.
Delicious food but small portions! Friendly staff.
Lovely warm welcome as usual by the very attentive staff
Celebrating my husbands 70th Birthday
Two glasses of Cava on the house was a unexpected gift
Scallop pie for me and Venison with duck egg starter for husband both a delight
Stuffed noisette of lamb was his choice very tasty
I chose the halibut and was rather disappointed as it seemed to be drowned in the sauce all too rich for me.
I am sure the halibut some broccoli and a drizzle of lemon would have sufficed
Pudding saved the night chocolate mousse for me and vanilla custard tart for the other half.
We love this restaurant and tell our friends it’s the best in town
We will be back on
Delicious food and wonderful service in a beautiful setting
Always great value for money and food tastes wonderful. Very relaxed and lovely surroundings. Great organisation around covid rules and felt completely safe.
Whilst never the cheapest night out you don’t go to worry about how much you pay; you go for the outstanding food, amazing drinks and beautiful setting. Didn’t disappoint, a real treat well worth a visit.
Lovely atmospheric restaurant in beautiful, historic building. Food was delicious and menu was interesting.
Lovely meal although the lobster and crab salad was a bit runny great value for money.
We went to Blackfriars to celebrate a birthday, we arrived only a few minutes late for the 2 4 £12 cocktails, to be told we’d missed out, which was disappointing as we were good customers. The setting and the ambience in the garden was lovely, the waiter was very attentive but not overly so, he brought my partner a complimentary glass of fizz, a nice touch. The table next to us was rowdy, put me in mind of a pub atmosphere, this spoiled it a little, they should’ve been asked to respect other diners. The food - we are both vegetarians - was delicious, a very different, thoughtful and tasty combination of flavours on the plate that complimented each other perfectly - I had smoked cheddar croquets, leek gratin, fried duck egg and barbecued onions and my partner had curried cauliflower fritters, warm coronation style potato salad, toasted seeds & chilli oil, we both had desserts, which again were mouthwatering & delicious.
Great quality food, great choice, exceptional service at great value, highly recommend
Lovely meal in excellent surroundings with very friendly staff
