Went for Sunday lunch before seeing a show at the chocolate factory which is closeby. Both starters and main courses were first class and the recommendation to have the cauliflower cheese was a good one! Staff were very helpful. well worth a visit.
Hake was replaced with Sea Bass but was still great. Portion on the fish slightly small but food quality across all courses was excellent. The venue itself is unique and has both character and isn’t too loud. Would definitely return!
Decent restaurant, very good ambience. Service was pretty average on the night i attended.
This is a really good watering hole, in a quiet spot near London Bridge.
Unfortunately, I picked up some negative vibes outside the Pub, and found that the history of prostitution and unmarked graves made me nervous in the area.
But this is no reflection on the Pub, which gives excellent service
Unique, traditional, cosy wine bar in tucked away location with lovely staff who look after you very well. Untouched by current trends in decor and food, the place to go for bangers and mash and an excellent glass of wine; the real charm is in the interior, with its panelling, private booths and Dickensian feel. The menu is short but well executed and the puddings very good. A happy birthday lunch with my husband and grown-up daughter with faultless service and no difficulty having a conversation in peace.
I do hope they never decide to change the place.......
A great place for good food, a generally lively atmosphere, not overwhelming, handy little glassed-off sections giving a little privacy. I love the old wooden floors and the old feel of the place. Unpretentious.
Our party could use the private room which worked out well for us. Service and food were both good in line with Davys establishments. Would recommend for a group.
Really enjoyed it here, the setting is very comfortable and conducive to good chat. The wine was lovely and my food was delicious. Will be back!
Very accommodating staff, great wine list and excellent value.
I have long been a fan of the Boot and Flogger, but it was the first time for my missus and the in laws.
The food was excellent and surprised those who hadn't been before as they thought it was going to be something like a gastropub.
Everything was superba nd we had a fantastic evening.
Typical Davy’s wine bar with quite a lot of tables cheek to jowl. Food was good and a reasonable and varied enough wine list. Quite empty on a Saturday late lunch
Great meal. All 4 starters, mains and desserts were really complimented and enjoyed. Would absolutely return. Full of character and talking points. Only one thing I would say is that light background music would improve overall atmosphere I think but that is personal preference. Service was great too from both the staff members. Real hidden gem just away from the busy part of Borough and Bankside .
Booked for our 12 year anniversary dinner, fairly last minute. The actual restaurant itself is lovely and exactly what we were looking for. Cosy, comfortable, quirky, casual. The food took absolutely ages because they had a big party going on elsewhere, which we didn't mind because they gave us loads of free wine to compensate and we were enjoying each other's company and not in a hurry to go anyway. Unfortunately, the food was shocking! I had the Gnocchi, which was inedible. The waiter really didn't seem surprised when I only ate 1 bite and agreed with me that it was terrible. My husband had a steak, which was over cooked and gristly. We decided we'd had enough by the time the dessert menu came so can't comment on that. The wine was delicious!
Nice little hidden gem. Great wine list and waiter had excellent attention to detail. Our meal was delicious and prepared to perfection. We had a wonderful night enjoying wine, food and ambience
Such a lovely atmospheric place, retains its original character. The selection of wines is outstanding and the staff are very knowledgeable. The shortish menu had some traditional and modern choices, and the oven-baked hake with almond crumb and a delicious sauce was perfectly cooked.
Wonderful. It was a new discovery for all of us and all agreed it was very enjoyable. Food and wine very tasty and we all especially enjoyed the complete absence of music. How lovely not to have to struggle hear and be heard. We’ll be back!
I was really looking forward to trying this pub/restaurant. The atmosphere was amazing but the service was terrible and the food was mediocre. Very basic pub food at best. Very Disappointed
Good food and hidden gem of a venue. Feels like something between an old fashioned club and a gastropub.
A wonderful experience. A charming gastropub with style, history and a relaxed vibe. Attentive, professional and friendly service by the knowledgeable owners. Lovely food and a fantastic, well curated international wine list. Highly recommended for a night out.
Full of character, a little quiet at 6.15 on a Thursday but soon got some atmosphere. Summer special offer is good value - plus the £2 extra for a glass of wine. We shared a starter and dessert and had the chicken burger each as a main. Stuffed afterwards. The salted caramel brownie cheesecake was delicious. Staff a little hard to get when we wanted to pay but attentive enough throughout the meal.
I used to visit and recommend this place frequently, especially when I lived nearby up until a year ago. I came back and I guess something changed. Service was not up to scratch. We ordered a nice bottle of white wine which was way too warm. Complained immediately about it and we were offered 'a bucket of ice'. Ok, I think what they should have done is offer a new, cold, bottle, but anyway i thought a bucket of ice will do. However this was no bucket, but one of those coolers, with a tiny bit of ice at the bottom. It took forever to cool. Waiter kept coming to top up only to be told to wait because it was still warm. By the time it was almost at the right temp, it was too late and we'd almost finished dinner. The waiter was quick to offer another bottle, but we had to decline, in case it was warm again.
Food was fine, and the place still has its charm, but in a wine bar, getting a £35 bottle of white served at room temperature is unforgivable. Service should know that, and they didn't know or care. Probably not their fault, but management should keep an eye on those things and have staffed trained accordingly. It's a shame because this was my go-to favourite place in the area, but I doubt I'll be back anytime soon.
Service was prompt and courteous. Food was very good. Close to Borough market but away from tourist spots. Was very nice place to have traditional British meal.
We had a great time here, I booked a table for 8 people celebrating my birthday. They gave us a private dining room which felt very special. The food and wine options were great and the service was bang on, the right blend of being around and leaving us to it. The entire party was satisfied, we'll be back!
Lovely place with a lot of character, a bit of a cross between a gentleman's club and an old pub. The food was great (very reasonably priced for the quality!) and an excellent choice of good wines. The service was excellent for the first half of the meal but our server seemed to go home and after that is was a bit frustrating, the replacement server seemed very arrogant, pretty much threw the plates down and was generally inattentive. We were going to stay for another drink but ended up leaving as the experience was slightly soured.
All that said, it is a fantastic place and we'd definitely go again! Perhaps just one bad server having a bad night.
Great hidden gem with great wine list and decent food! Save room for dessert!
A surprise gem hidden off the main thoroughfare next to the historic Crossbones Garden. The rather unprepossesing exterior belies the exquisite period charm of the interior. I was given a conducted tour of the extensive number of rooms converted from earlier cottage industrial use which lend themselves well to group occasions. We had a private room on the ground floor with the door open; it was lovely hearing the general hubbub without imposing upon our meal. A terrific afternoon which Dickens may well have known himself in his time.
The best Sunday roast I have had in a long time.
Great service, quiet, clean, good wine list. Menu is a bit limited but everything was delicious.
The wine is great, and very reasonably priced. The food was tasty and affordable, although there didn't seem to be enough serving staff around, and we had to get up to ask for things a couple of times after a lengthy wait.
It's a lovely, intimate setting, and an interesting place to look around.
This was the first visit for my wife and I. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening in a relaxed atmosphere. The staff were friendly and attentive. The food and wine were good value. We would recommend the restaurant to friends - and will return!
Excellent friendly service as always and very good food and wine. A pity it closed early, at 10pm - we did not realise this would be the case so had to drink up rather quickly at the end of our meal.
What a great restaurant , slightly hidden and unassuming from the outside ,once inside it is just fab ,there is a wonderfully comfortable feeling about the place with great friendly and professional staff , the food was delicious and a good wine list , also no music so no need to shout at your fellow diners , you could stay all day and all night , just perfect.
Service was lovely and Sunday roast was really delicious and so were the cakes and desserts.
A bit pricey, but we have been cuddled by the staff and we loved there.
We also celebrate a birthday and they offered us a yummy chocolate brownie!
Excellent, cosy venue. Food was faultless and reasonably priced.
Service was excellent as well. Would thoroughly recommend a meal here.
Good quality food . Bangers and Mash was a delight on a wintry evening .
Great place to catch up with friends
Our recent lunch at the Boot was as enjoyable as ever with delightful staff and the excellent selection of Davy's wines and sherries by the glass. We will return. The olde-world interior is attractive and the little booths make for a quiet environment. The food is perfectly OK but not a foodie experience. The sausages and mash with onion gravy is always a pretty safe bet.
Good place for New Years meal pre Fireworks. the menu was good value, good quality and varied.
A quiet pub with lots of space around tables
How lovely to go to a restaurant with NO MUSIC where you can make conversation without shouting, the food is excellent, the service excellent, the wine excellent and the atmosphere is excellent!
What a great find tucked away ! Service was great very friendly staff and the food was fabulous, my group thanked me for finding the boot and flogger !! We all enjoyed it and would definitely visit again and recommend
This place is a proper gem of a restaurant. I organised a family get together and everyone had a fantastic time and the food was bloody marvellous! My father who is intolerant to dairy was very well looked after, and we enjoyed the wine list as well! Easy to get to as not far from London Bridge and definitely somewhere that I will be returning to, I'm familiar with some of the Davys winebars, and this is a new favourite, we also had a very switched on waitress who was great.
