Named after the Royal Yacht Britannia which is berthed nearby, Britannia Spice is located in a former whisky warehouse on Commercial Street. The restaurant itself is in ship-shape condition; immaculately clean with rope ladders and ships’ helms carefully chosen to accentuate the maritime theme. Child-friendly and wheelchair accessible, Britannia Spice serves multi-ethnic cuisine with dishes from India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Thailand. An AA Rosette for culinary excellence is the latest in a long line of awards. Fine dining with exotic eastern flavours
The restaurant prides itself on fresh and healthy cooking and offers a wide selection of vegetarian and gluten-free food. Seasonal native ingredients are used to prepare dishes to the highest professional standard and customer favourites can be requested and the skilled chefs will do their best to comply.
Everything about Britannia Spice was extremely average at best.
We had lunch here over a year ago, and while the menu was limited, we enjoyed the food. Unfortunately I cannot same the same for this visit. The menu is still limited and does not offer a great deal of choice. What we did have however was terrible - both starters and mains. The food looked and
tasted as if it had been around for a few days - even the rice (I think it is nigh on impossible to get rice wrong). Added to this was appalling service - it took 45 minutes for the starters to arrive. We were entertained however during our wait by the couple behind us who refused to eat or pay for what they had been given, describing it as "disgusting". We should have followed suit and given up after the starters as the main were in fact disgusting - I did have to chase the waiter to bring the mains as we had now been there an hour - we would have been better leaving. To be then charged £50 for two people with only one glass of wine is a joke (I had to go find someone to give me the bill). One of the worst Indian meals we have ever had - and we have had a lot. Will never go there again and I recommend you give it a miss.
Perfect food very nicely located in leith handy for holiday inn
The food is excellent. I have been there several times whilst working in the area and have always arrived soon after opening so it is usually quiet.
Service is good and prices are reasonable.
Lovely food, served by friendly staff.we will definitely be back, and would recommend it to friends and family.
Have gone along on New Years Eve for several years now as well as on other occassions. The staff are always friendly and helpful and the food is good. Easy walking distance when having a drink and always a good atmosphere.
Check your bill - once is a mistake, twice careless but more then that and it's serious. Each time we have been here we have been charged twice for popadoms and chutney and have had to send the bill back. We won't ever go here again - aside from that the food was OK but small portions and high prices - £14.75 for a tiny bowl of chicken which alleged to have prawns in it too was very poor value for money.
We never normally finish a meal in an Indian Restaurant but left here still hungry.
Mandatory that ever person seated has a main course. Kids have to pay half price for a main. Portions were tiny. Food was tasty but restaurant was not busy. Pompadoms were charged per Pompadom. Seemed very much that they were more interested in making money than developing loyal. Customers. Will not return.
Excellent menu choice, there was 6 of us dining and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the food. The service was friendly and professional. I would highly recommend the Ceylon curry.
Great Indian meal at Britannia Spice during our trip to Edinburgh. The restaurant is definitely out of the traditional "tourist area". The food was wonderful - the restaurant was not busy at all, and the service was definitely slow to start, but once we placed our order the service definitely picked up. I understand that the restaurant's name is a reference to the HMS Britannia, the retired royal yacht docked nearby, but the nautical décor of the restaurant is a little odd for an Indian restaurant. Great experience overall.
One of the best curries I have had for a long time. The food was really fresh
And each dish had a unique flavour which is sometimes not the case in indian restaurants. The service we received from Sian
Was superb. Highly recommended.
We arrived just as they were opening at 5pm and ordered our main course meal and then had to sit for almost an hour before it arrived. It was tasty but not worth the wait. The restaurant was empty so unsure why it took so long . One waiter was smartly dressed and efficient but the other 2 were wearing white tunics which were creased and covered in curry stains. They Had just opened so it was obviously from the night before!! We shall not be returning.
Atmosphere and design is bland. Restaurant is out of date
So many items 'off' the menu and website not updated. Very packed seating. Dishes that were available tasty.
Visited on Bank Holiday Monday evening. There were two other tables occupied. The waiter who took our drinks order didn't understand what we wanted and another waiter had to come over and ask again. One of the glasses had three chips around the rim of the glass although when this was pointed out we were given a fresh glass and another drink on the house. The food was ok but the atmosphere was dire. Would not visit again.
First visit. Staff attentive and friendly. Food excellent and served hot. We will visit again and recommend to friends.
Made an afternoon booking for the Thursday evening, for 4, not too busy and excellent service, very good choice of vegetarian dishes. Helpful staff in explaining the extensive menu.
A relaxing evening, thank you.
Sorry but it was cold in the restaurant and this impacted on the overall experience heat the place up guys
Outstanding service and staff very helpful.
Felt very relaxed and made welcome. Food was very tasty and fresh.
I was on my birthday meal with my wife. I got a lovely bottle of prossecco for free. Ioved my whole evening and happily will go again.
We ordered poppadoms, dips etc to start which were incredibly fresh and tasty. Had chicken pakoras and onion bajees which were also great, and then had peshwari naan with our meals which were awesome aswell! Mine was the mango chicken one (can't remember how to spell it) but it was incredible!
The restaurant wasn't that quiet for a Sunday and it was a nice chilled atmosphere.
The food at Britannia spice was fantastic and plenty of choice even for veggies, however customer service needs to be improved. No interest shown in diners as individuals or any form of friendly conversation or interaction.
Could not fault the food or the service. Staff very friendly and attentive.
Restaurant has lovely theme, however the heating was not sufficient and we felt very cold whilst eating our meal. Fair to say we didn't enjoy it as much as we had hoped even though the staff were helpful and ensured portable the heater beside our table was as near us as possible, a little warmer would have made a big difference but we would definitely return - maybe in the summer when heating may not be needed.
Our meal this weekend was first class. It was our second meal at Britannia Spice in the last 3 months and demonstrated that their standards have remained superior for years now.
this was a return visit after a number of years, however the quality of the service and food has not dropped, good food and value for money
We have been going here for the past 15 years but sadly with each recent visit I have noticed that the customer service and staffing levels have changed.
The older male (perhaps the manager/owner) seems to have no idea how to treat a customer and make them feel welcome, service is slow due to lack of staff.
Food portions also seem to have become smaller.
This is definitely not the Britannia Spice I remember where customer service was A++ from the moment you entered till the moment you left.
Reserved through this app and when we arrived the old male approached us, when I said reservation for ----- he just went ok, took us to a table that was not what we had requested so was very clear that they never check their reservations system (not the first time this has happened).
The food is good, and I love the restaurant but they need to get their act together and bring the place back up to the standard it once was and perhaps they will win more awards that they proudly display but seem to have stopped in 2008.
As someone who work in a 5 star hospitality environment and have previously recommended this place to friends & family and guests I'm not sure I would do so anymore until I was sure overall service had improved.
Waited 15minutes to get a drink ordered, from the time we arrived 1hour to get a starter only after complaining, waited another50minutes to be served our main , once again complained to our server about time waited only to be told they have been busy ,quality of the food was very good only to be let down by service
Nice relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, great food!
Went out with friends on a Tuesday night, the whole experience was excellent we had been before but our friends hadn't. We had the Indian option our friends the Thai option. They were extremely impressed, we stayed on for a while and never felt any pressure to move. Our waiter was excellent, very attentive and very friendly. Great night.
Walked in and most of the staff were sat at a table. No friendly welcome. The restaurant felt cold and the decor looked tired. Service was poor, didn't get our 2nd drink order, so had to ask again. Didn't get the food order right, had to point it out to them, with this you could understand if they were busy, but when there was only 10% full, so there was no excuse. All that said, the food was good, but probably better as a takeaway.
Two of us went for dinner. Staff forgot about my popadom order as a starter, even though they brought out other half's starter on its own, then brought the main after it, so missed out on my popadoms :( Then asked staff for advice on how hot a dish was, as I like hot Indian food. I was told not to worry, it was hot. It was the sweetest, least spicy food I ever had in an Indian, which certainly wasn't what I wanted (dish was nice, just not to my taste). Asked another staff member, who informed the that was the mildest dish...
Been here often and never fails to impress. Very empty at lunch time, but no waiting and great service as a result. Food lovely, it always is. Would highly recommend this place.
First time at Britania spice , food was lovely and very fresh , very busy which is ways a gd sign , defo return :)
Britannia Spice has many awards for its food, and well deserved too. Service is good with attentive staff keen to make your visit enjoyable. The decor is in keeping with its name, almost within sight of the Royal Yacht Britannia, all which makes this a pleasant visit.
After hearing so many reviews about this place I decided to stop by to get a chance to test it for myself. However, I was a bit disappointed when my food was served. I have opted to a Thai version of curry but was told that the Thai chef was not in so there were only a select few items available (one page) of the four-page menu. After narrowing my options I chose the tandoori chicken. Being a common dish I expected this to go down well. After one bite I could not eat anymore. I could tell it was overcooked as the meat was very dry. Unfortunately I could not finish my meal. The manager was very nice and offered us a discount but I don't plan on returning anytime soon.
Excellent service and food was good. Ambiance great. Perhaps presentation of food could be a little better. However they actually made a lovely dish based on my preference which was excellent. Well worth a visit. Will go again
We had an excellent dinner. The waiters were helpful in explaining the menu. The service was good and the food was excellent
We had a lovely meal. service with a smile ( that makes a change from lots of places) Lovely atmosphere and we could here ourselves speak
Food was nice but service really let the experience down on this occasion.
When visiting Edinburgh I was recommended Britannia Spice. Although service was very good the food was not great as I excepted. Trying to do too many thing. Forgot to add my discount to the bill which I do not like.
The food was very good, as it has been every time we have eaten there. The negative on this occasion was the difficulty in getting anyone to take our food order, even after asking if we could order. The frustrating part was that the only people apparently allowed to take food orders were clearly visible and not dealing with anyone else. Difficult to feel like valued customers when you are ignored.
