Bringing 1940s Paris to modern-day Edinburgh, Café St Honoré restaurant is a charming bistro serving up traditional French cuisine (with a few Scottish favourites thrown in) to a loyal clientele. Tucked away on a picturesque cobbled lane in the New Town, the cosy dining room at Café St Honore, with mirrored walls and black-and-white tiled floors, provides an atmospheric retreat. The team here are passionate about local, organic produce, so the menu changes daily. There are prix fixe menus on offer at lunch and dinner if you’re after a bargain, or just need an excuse to indulge in dessert. In the evening, a seasonal menu du jour is available alongside the full a la carte, which features dishes like roast pheasant with red cabbage and pancetta; Shetland salmon with leek and herb risotto; and vanilla crème brûlée. The wine list features some excellent French wines – a real treat for novices and connoisseurs alike.

I hadn't been to Cafe St Honore for over 2 years and after this visit I have no idea why I left it so long! The food, service, atmosphere and value were all outstanding! Highly recommend and will not be leaving it another 2 years until I return!

It was very quiet whilst I was there so the ambience was impossible to judge. However it is a reliable and comfortable restaurant.

Excellent food and we enjoyed the relaxed service. We were grateful that the staff were able to accommodate our request to move to a quieter table for dessert as the other diners in the back room were have a great time, but we were struggling to hear each other!

Set menu very limited, only 2 options per course. A la carte significantly more expensive. We went to have the set (£25 for 3 courses) it was not that tempting for us so we went for a la carte (£18 for just my starter!). Good wine list.

We had a really lovely evening at Cafe St Honore. The food was absolutely delicious, as were the drinks. The food isn't cheap but the quality was worth it. The waiting staff could not have been more helpful. I will definitely be returning.

First time here for my birthday, but will come back! Everything was just perfect and not too expensive. We were 6 people and we were all pleased with food, drinks, service and ambiance. I normally take photos of my food, but had such a great time that I forgot !! Quite a small place, so booking is recommended.

We met up with a friend who we haven’t seen in over 20 years and enjoyed great food accompanied by a fine bottle of wine and attentive and knowledgeable staff. Lovely music playing in the background made for the perfect place to eat, drink and natter for a couple of delightful hours. Thank you for great service, fab meal and perfect ambiance.

The location itself immediately feels like you've found a hidden treasure tucked away from the busier streets. The atmosphere is inviting and the staff are friendly without being overwhelmingly so.

We aren't big drinkers but there are multiple drinks options with a varied price list and the staff were happy to recommend a wine to my taste and didn't force the more expensive options.

The food, amongst everything else, has ensured we'll return again to try something else on the menu. We had three courses each, all of which were outstanding and served in a timely manner, allowing you to enjoy each course without being rushed. We also stayed for a little while after we had finished our meals which isn't something we often do but the whole experience was so pleasant that we didn't feel the urge to rush off.

This was our first time visiting Edinburgh and our date here was part of an overall perfect weekend that I'm happy to repeat.

The Cafe St Honore is an Edinburgh institution - but it’s one institution I’d happily live in. Ian Rankin’s Inspector Rebus had his retirement dinner here; I’ve seen the late, great Iain Banks at a neighbouring table. It’s a bit like slipping out of the New Town, into St Germain, Paris. Dark wood, flattering mirrors, candlelight. Marvellous bread. And my Cullen skink was creamy, smoky, sophisticated: very French and very Scottish. Venison with red cabbage and mixed roots also a fine thing. Most food here is organic. Wine list reliable. Waiters will let you linger late while they clean up. Charming.
