Cagen Sake Bar, we have turned a new page and we have switched our concept to a Sake Bar, with small plates.
no reservations all walk ins.
we will be serving sashimi and hot plates, unfortunately we will not be serving sushi Omakase any more
Cagen was a great experience! It was easy to interact with the chefs and the other diners at the counter were friendly, too. There will be no more omakase starting 7/21, but instead on 7/23 there is sake tasting and tapas!!!
Awesome omakase, Japanese fish mostly. Splurge on the counter, rather than the table.
It just doesn’t get better. Our happy place!
Best sushi in nyc
Our evening at Cagen was unbelievable. We sat at the counter and enjoyed Chef Tomita's masterful work. The variety and the service were incredible. I couldn't find a complaint if I tried.
Great food and experience. Will be back again.
No brainer experience if you want to splurge! Simple presentation and intense freshness of each dish were off the charts...
I don't know why people rave about this place. My expectation was not met. Food was ok and service did not meet the price.
Food was excellent.
Very quiet and reserved atmosphere
This is the best sushi restaurant in NYC in my mind. Great value for money. Fantastic.
This was our fifth time visiting Cagen and unfortunately the hype that they've lost a step is very true. The sushi is less creative, the sobe courses are gone, no dessert included, and add-ons have gone way up in price.
Sorry to see this happen. This was once one of our top restaurants, now it's just a good, expensive place.
Chef sources species of fish from japan that most other places don't which makes him and his restaurant stand out, IMO!
Plus chef perfectly prepares his omakase in a very zen like casual setting. Everything was delicious!!!
Awesome time at Cagen! Highly recommended
Great food with great service.
New Year dinner
Spectacular sushi. I think 16 courses, fish flown in from Japan, at least 12 of them varieties I had never eaten or even heard of before. Wonderful service, including waitress who was very knowledgeable about the sakes they had available.
8:30 pm seating; only 4 of us at sushi bar with the chef. He is not “chatty”, but was very nice and with a good sense of humor, answering questions and accepting praise.
The best sushi experience we have had, including at a Michelin one star restaurant in Tokyo. We will be back!
We made reservations to celebrate the holidays and make the occasion special w friends as we were all flying in from different states. We paid more money to sit at the sushi bar ($160.00) for the omakase tasting menu. The head chef barely spoke or made any effort to engage with the 4 of us BUT more than willing to do so for the Japanese couple to my right. Towards the end of the tasting I asked a question about the sushi which he responded then made a condescending remark about us in Japanese to the couple to my right. Unfortunately for him someone in my group is part Japanese and understood what he was saying. Bottom line, food was decent, wait staff decent, ambiance so-so with overall experience poor. I would highly recommend Sushi Nakazawa or Sushi Yasuda at a lower price, better food, better ambiance and better overall experience.
Best sushi and most intimate experience. The chef/owner makes the food and sitting at the sushi bar is a must. Headed back in 3 days. Love it!
Amazing !!! Loved it
Atmosphere very very austere
But best sushi ever
Loved Cagen. They didn’t miss a beat. Professional service yet friendly. Attentive but not smothering. Fish and meat were amazing and the perfect temperature. Would highly recommend Cagen to those who want the best service and cuisine.
Wonderful experience and amazing food! For the price it can’t be beat.
Overpriced. Insufficiently creative. Maki falling apart.
Hands down the best omakase experience in nyc. It’s not nobu or bond st., so get that out of your head. This is attentive, conscious, very special experience (we ate at the sushi bar so extra experience watching each piece being prepared). Sushi chef also made time for conversation pertaining to what she was preparing, which enhanced our experience. Oh, and as far as the quality of the fish- off the charts.
Extraordinary experience, bordering on the religious. Such a joy to watch the chef prepare each puece of sushi for our omakase. Sitting at the sushi bar is a must.
Favorite omakase in town. A lot of pieces for the price. Make sure to arrive early to be seated with Chef Tomita.
One word - Awesome!
Not good and rude front desk lady.
Bad place with bad smell bad taste bad decoration super high prices and the chairs are not comfortable, it’s a scam. 230 usd each and it wasn’t surprising.
Chef very talented
Chef a bit too quiet- could not tell if limited English or not interested in talking
Been here a bunch of times. Sushi bar is a must! Keep it coming.
Very fresh! Too salty sometimes, prefer lighter flavor
One of my favorite sushi joints in the city. Given how other sushi joints in the city are, easily $ 250+ pp Cagen's $160 pp is a very good deal since the the type of fish and quality is not short of any other more expensive places. The whole omakase definitely fills you too. After sushi you do get a bowl of home-made soba which is excellent along with desert.
My husband’s birthday
great value omakase meal. fish is amazing. not your standard tuna rolls and spider rolls. truly artisinal sushi. Tomita-san is a genius
A wonderful experience and the most delicious and fresh sashimi I have ever eaten. Would recommend time and again!
Chef was phenomenal, the fish some of the best I’ve ever had.
First time having omakase. Definitely set the bar high!
