Char Steak & Lounge

My fiancé and I went out for a date night. It was the first time we’ve been out since we got engaged in October ‘20, so we wanted to make a night of it. Wow! We couldn’t have made a better choice than Char. The food and drinks were absolutely incredible; the crab cakes are indescribably delicious. Everything was so good! I’m still thinking about my dinner and my strawberry & gin cocktail. I took my dessert to go and it’s the type of chocolate heaven you dream about. Our waiter was lovely & attentive. We couldn’t have asked for a better evening & we can’t wait to go back!

We have dined here several times before but this occasion was “just okay”. Three steaks came out overcooked. Our meals were delivered but we had no forks to eat them with for several minutes. The server clearly lost interest in our table, and the bill was delivered and returned with no words or expression whatsoever. Dessert was the best part of the meal.

The fact that an 8oz filet is nearly 50.00. And it shows up on a huge plate just the filet is awful!!!! Looks terrible no presentation at all , for this price range the plate should look much better have some kind of side..... many places I. Rochester with good quality meats and they never come out. Like this and in same price range.

The food was delicious. Great atmosphere. I’m actually visiting again just two days after my initial visit!

A bit noisy ambience but the food is always solid. One of the best steaks in town.

The menu was limited. The New York Strip was OK. The burger was overdone and over priced.

Expected more from the food as far as taste. It was ok. I don’t think I would come back for dinner but I would try brunch and I would come back to have a few drinks the ambiance was cool.

Steak was cooked well. The add on lobster tail for 42 dollars was the size of my toodler fist smh I expect more creativity in the food from a high priced high end looking restaurant.

We’ve been about four times now and we always get treated so well. The staff is super friendly and the food is phenomenal. Love everything about Char!

The oysters were delicious! The steak was overcooked. Still on a mission to find a decent steak around here. The service and space was nicely done and we felt safe.

We were seated in the back room. The vibe is totally different from the front. Not what you’d expect for a high priced restaurant experience.

Overall it was fine. When I made the reservation a few days earlier the menu at the time had some items that weren’t on the menu the night we dined. There also were no specials that night (it was a pretty terrible weather night) so the menu overall felt pretty limited. The drinks were ok. I’m assuming because of Covid they’ve suspended their valet service.

I was a bit uncomfortable after being seated at our table. We had a reservation and after arrival, we were seated in a back room at a table in the middle of the room. Only one other table was seated, the rest were empty. Yet we were seated at the lone table. Within 10 minutes, all of the other tables were filled, with each group of people walking by in close proximity. Even though we were seated and had drinks, I didn't feel comfortable taking off my mask. The wait staff was masked but whisked close by us as they attended to the other tables. The group of 4 people in the booth behind us were obviously from two different households yet had their masks off and after a few drinks, were loud and boisterous. My husband and I were less than 6 feet away from them and I was uncomfortable while I had my mask off. The food was expensive and good, but not great for the price. I don't know....I under it's the time of Covid and I made the choice to eat out in a restaurant, but I expected a little more consideration and space between me and the other people in the restaurant.

Never disappointed! My favorite spot!

One of the best tasting steaks I've ever had. The flavor from their wood fired and charcoal grill was incredible! The staff was very helpful and accomodating.

Char is easily on the nicest restaurants in Rochester and been a long time favorite for both dinner or enjoying cocktails. Ambiance is beautiful and the service / food is excellent. My favorites include wedge salad and the petite filets. The venue draws a good crowd so I would plan to stay and enjoy your time and even venture up to the rooftop at Hattie’s which is on the 9th floor.

Our waiter Pauley was amazing. Highly recommend the steak, mac and cheese and pineapple sorbet.

The Salmon was the best in Rochester, I've tried them all.

Food was good. Our server was good with questions about the menu and he made good wine recommendations. Ambiance is missing something . The restaurant is in the middle of the hotel lobby and really so it struggles with intimacy especially for the price point of the food being served. Come here for a decent steak with friends or your birthday or after a promotion . Don’t come for a romantic dinner or anniversary

I was extremely disappointed in the service. Very standoffish server, never smiled, robot like until he realized I was in the business. The food was mediocre at best and the prices were way too high for the taste and portion sizes.
Just so disappointing.

Excellent ambience, outstanding food and drinks, and great service. The only thing that could be improved is the temperature at the table we sat, it felt a little nippy.

Found out why they call it "Char." My 8oz filet was burned on the outside. Just tasted like charred salt and was dry on the inside. Service was very slow and food was not that great considering the high prices.

Each dish was better than the last.
