   Two of us booked for a pre-theatre meal. We both chose the red pepper risotto. Unfortunately it was so bland. We had to keep putting black pepper on to make it more flavoursome. It didn't work. There were obviously red peppers in there somewhere but to be honest it tasted like rice pudding. Three of us had planned to eat there the next night too but we went elsewhere and had a much nicer meal. Nice looking restaurant no doubt but you need to work on your risotto...

   From walking in to a warm welcome to leaving with a cheery goodbye from the staff we could not fault any aspect of the Restaurant, food, ambiance or staff. Look forward to going back as it was tremendous value for money with or without the Itison voucher that we had and the food was simply delicious with plenty choice. The cocktails were also properly made and was nice to try something from the norm.

   Went there on Valentines Evening - it was a last minute booking. Really nice staff, food was very good especially the tuna! Will definitely be back next time we are in Edinburgh.

   This is a nice restaurant, well located and has a very nice atmosphere. The experience was spoilt by the cold room (sash windows in Edinburgh brrr) and the small meal quantities. It was no cheap either!

   Very impressed with everything about Clouds and Soil. We went to the bar on arrival and were met by a very friendly girl called Kara. We ordered a couple of cocktails and she was very knowledgeable about them. When I had a special request, nothing was too much trouble. The bar experience was first class. Onto the restaurant upstairs and the food was absolutely beautiful! The menu wasnt extensive, which I think is a good thing as there can be too much choice sometimes. All of our courses were really well cooked and very tasty. Overall, we were very happy with our visit and will definitely visit again. Highly recommended.

   Slow service,lacking in atmosphere,tables too close to each other food average. Unable to eat dessert as apple not cooked. I would not have been happy to pay full price, meal had been prepaid with an itison deal.

   Food was delicious, staff were friendly and polite, would definitely eat here again. Wide selection of drinks, the prosecco was lovely. I booked after finding on the Dugs Welcome website and reviewing the high marks on trip advisor, the staff quickly offered water for the dog which is always a plus.

    Lovely restaurant great service but the food was a bit hit and miss and the partridge was starter sized..........would have liked to have been advised to add a side as the John Dory was fine without therefore the staff should at least mention it. John Dory very well cooked but tasted so salty and the starter of salmon must have been wrapped in butter as that is all I could taste. Venison starter was lovely but small. Dessert and cheese both lovely.

    Starter was flavoursome but texture all wrong. If described as a Mille Fuille then that's what it should be. Delicious sea bass and devine trio of chocolate desserts. Wine list limited. Service was top notch in restaurant and bar.

    The mussels for starter and the chicken for main were delicious but the spring roll starter was tiny and the monkfish cheek main was horrible. This is why I would not recommend as it was a bit of a hit and miss. (All meals mentioned are off the August A-la-carte menu)

    This was our first visit to Clouds & Soil, and we weren't disappointed. Excellent food, interesting place/decor, and a cocktail menu which extended beyond the usual suspects. We were attended by at least four different staff members and all were chatty and professional, with one in particular taking the time to discuss the gluten-free options/alternatives (essentially almost any item could be prepared GF, since the meals are cooked to order). Unfortunately we had to rush away so couldn't stay for a dessert, but we plan to return before too long in order to remedy that. Highly recommended.

    Beautiful place, with brilliant service. Menu ticks all boxes with different choices. Each course my boyfriend and myself had, we did really enjoy. But we were still hungry after 3!! So would recommend. But not at their full prices.

    We remember this venue in a previous incarnation. It has now been refurbished in a very pleasant style . The bar is inviting, and the upstairs dining room has an ambience that suits this busy theatre -land location. The food was excellent..plenty of choice for vegetarians...well presented and ample portions

    There was a wide choice of food with about six options for each course, including a couple of vegetarian and fish dishes. Waiter was very friendly and although he didn't know a few answers to our questions about the menu, he went away and found out quickly. The dining room was nicely appointed and had a relaxed atmosphere.

    Booked this pre-theatre. Service was very slow & poor, had to ask for drinks menu. Main courses were both very disappointing and both left quite a lot. Due to the slow service and theatre start had to ask for bill when main courses served. Would not recommend this place at all!

    This is a lovely venue with an obliging and courteous waitstaff. My cocktail was great (not surprising since it was a la Bond No.9!) but I'm afraid the food was a little bit disappointing. I found that the vegetable accompaniment had great sauce, but in both seafood and meat, there was really not enough seasoning or flavour. I guess some chefs feel that meat or fish should "speak for itself" but personally I like my food just a little more exciting! The prices were okay, but I will be honest and say that we didn't leave 100% satisfied.

    I know it wasn't busy but my request for a quiet area as we had a special celebration was provided and we had the Hendricks room which was very private. Excellent service with a smile and the toilets were clean and nicely decorated with nice smellies etc. Food was grat value and well cooked and presented. Thank you

    Being directly across from the Playhouse Edinburgh makes this a prime location for pre-theatre dining. The food and decor were great and the service pretty good too. Only downside was access with a serious amount of stairs to reach the restaurant and the loo. There may be a lift but I did not see it.

    The quality if the food was excellentm the restaurant well decorated and staff attentive. If I had one thing I would change, dim the lights as it was very bright and if you want to attract those looking for a romantic meal, then dimming lights would help

    Clouds and Soil should be a great restaurant. The menu is very good (with excellent vegetarian choices) and the cooking is to a high standard. The building itself is inviting with what could be a cosy, romantic room for the restaurant. The service was friendly and efficient. However, what lets the restaurant down is a complete lack of atmosphere. We shared our meal with a table of two, who left before we finished, and a table of three tourists who spent all their time on their phones. Other than that, the place was dead. Perhaps it was because of the lack of diners which meant the chef could rattle through the orders. The starters appeared almost immediately and the mains as soon as the starters were whisked away. We're slow eaters but we were done and dusted within 50 minutes. We beat a hasty retreat to the ambiance of our local pub.

    First visit and would go back. Staff were attentive but not invasive. Courses were well spaced out, did not feel rushed through our meal. Portions were small but suited my appetite, husband would have liked more. Did not have a starter as none took my fancy which is unusual. Slow cooked beef cheeks were amazing, just fell apart, perfectly cooked. Only criticism was that the room was cold as they kept the doors open to the restaurant.

    The food and Service here was nothing short of perfection and made my Edinburgh trip very enjoyable. The staff here were very attentive and professional which seems to be a dieing art in recent years. The food was extremely tasty and very well presented. I will certainly be returning to Clouds and soil which is now one of my favourite restaurants in Edinburgh.

    Clouds and Soil, a game of two halves. The building from the street is in line with all the others around the area of the Edinburgh Playhouse,but step inside and climb the stairs and you enter a grand dining room where not only will you not overhear the next tables conversation but you could be forgiven for thinking you had booked private dining such is the width and height of the room. The service is friendly, unobtrusive and chilled as it should be - so far so good. The food and wine then, well it's fine, it's ok, it's easily forgettable and this surely must be the real shame when you have such perfectly pitched service and surroundings. I could go through the pros and cons of each dish on the small menu but that would be missing the point, because the point in all dining out should start with great food, well thought out, well cooked, making you glad you came out and if the service and ambience also just happen to be great then mission accomplished. So well done C&S for such a great venue and for recruiting such a great front of house, but it's time to spend the same time perfecting the menu,then the 5 stars will start rolling in.

    Had my Birthday night out here and got the private gin room, which was lovely. Food fab and excellent service. They have a late bar too which was a bonus. Will be back for any occasion or a meal for two.

    The food was pretty tasty although the menu was relatively limited and they seemed bothered by any food allergies. The restaurant was quiet which was perfect as we could chat easily and hear each other. The service wasn't great and we had to get their attention on a number of occasions. For having just 1.5 courses (main and coffee) it took a long time (approx. 90 minutes from sitting to leaving) which was unexpected as there were only 3 other tables. The bill was too expensive in our option for the quality and because we had a main and a coffee and drank water. This a good spot for a pre- or post-theatre meal but not for much else unfortunately.

    Found this on itison. Difficult to find in a tucked-back building with an elegant but terse sign. Dinner at 6:30 in an empty restaurant, but both our starters and our mains were very slow to arrive. Good food, well-presented, and nice wine offerings. Restaurant on second floor above bar and outdoor smoking areas. Smoke comes in through open doors and windows, making for not such a great dining experience.
