We had a very lovely Christmas afternoon - I can’t fault a thing.
It is facinating , historical, amusing, simply a different experience especially for the younger generation and it is a reminder of childhood for us aged and infirm!!
The service was great, the food was interesting, really brilliant
Went here for Afternoon Tea, at the end of a romantic Christmas break in York. As soon as we walked into the converted railway carriage we were welcomed and ushered to our table. The ambiance, food, drink and host was amazing. I thoroughly recommend coming here for an afternoon tea if you are in York.
Booked to celebrate my husbands birthday.
Very attentive and friendly staff.
Lovely surroundings.....murder on the Orient Express sprang to mind !!
Wild mushroom soup with buffet size sausage roll to start, very welcome on a cold rainy December day.
Good selection of finger sandwiches, seconds were offered.
Followed by scone, jam and cream.
Rounded off with a seclection of festive mini cakes...
Good choice of loose leaf teas with lots of hot water.
Would recommend and would return for a another special occasion.
Great experience of different flavours of tea and we got a Christmas inspired afternoon tea which was lovely and for the bits we didn't like they swapped them for the pieces we did like.
I would defo go again made us feel very welcome.
The setting is definitely worth it. Service is excellent and the quality of food is very good but one wonders how a few miniature sandwiches and cakes can be so expensive when you can get a 3 course lunch for less in some of York's best restaurants. However, compared to other venues offering equally or more expensive afternoon tea, the Countess of York gets my vote as something a bit more special.
As you stepped in the carriage you felt you had been here before - many years ago in fact ! I can remember travelling by steam so felt comfortable in my surroundings. We were given the choice of where to sit and were looked after very well. The sandwiches were delicate and varied. Couldn’t quite manage all the cakes after the ample scone and cream. Such a choice of teas !
Altogether a very pleasant experience
I took my mum for afternoon tea here for her birthday, we both really enjoyed what a different experience this was, it was a very nostalgic atmosphere and a very classy afternoon tea, a lovely treat, the food was delicious would definately recommend.
Fantastic afternoon tea experience with very good food and tea. Very good substitutions made for 1 vegetarian and 1 who does not eat cream. Very good service too and special atmosphere!
Absolutely lovely quaint little carriage
Perfect for afternoon tea sonewhere different
Great service and food was amazing we all loved it and would definitely return
Nice and decent. Great services and wonderful experience.
As always, the food and the service at the Countess were exceptional. 4 very fussy eaters with different requirements all catered to with no fuss. Even swapped some of the small treats to suit.
Will always recommend.
Extremely tasty and varied afternoon tea menu in a delightful setting. Great service, and free parking!
Staff were lovely. Food was really nice and varied. Came round and offered us more sandwiches. We were so full afterwards!
Lovely birthday treat. Food and service very good, would visit again
Very attentive service and delicious food - nothing was too much trouble we were offered extra sandwiches and refills of tea.
Have been wanting to come here for a while and was not disappointed. Relaxed atmosphere good choice of teas, lovely old Railway Coach. Served by friendly staff, elegant dinner service and food was lovely. Would come back again.
Afternoon tea for my Mum and I
We took our 4 year old train enthusiast son for afternoon tea for his birthday and he was absolutely over the moon! He’s eyes lit up when his own individual stand of sandwiches and cakes arrived and he managed to get through quite a lot of it. My husband and I had the vegetarian options and everything was absolutely delicious. The staff were really friendly and happily spent time running through what everything was and were brilliant with our son. We had such a lovely afternoon and will definitely be back!
We had very nice food but the waitress was very rood she asked if we would like any more sandwich and there were three off us my self my wife and my five year old son. When she ask I said yes please she responded I’m not talking to you I’m asking him him being my five year old son. I have never bin spoken to like that in public and being a paying customer. I have phoned and left a message with no responses.
I booked this for a 50th birthday it was really lovely apart from the fact I called and payed in advance and stated my requirements to find that they didn't listen as I stated I didn't eat eggs that I was a vegetarian and then I was served egg and only one sandwich I was able to eat so very disappointed in that to be honest .I was told they would put something special on table as it was a 50th birthday and that hadn't been done either .
We had the afternoon tea and the quantity of food was just right. We especially enjoyed the finger sandwiches and the minature cakes and pastries. We were able to finish it all without feeling too stuffed. The year was lovely and we got two macarons as a gift to take away. The ambience is lively and quiet and the carriage is very authentic. I would recommend this as a lovely treat especially after you've been dragged around the museum!
I can thoroughly recommend The Countess of York for a most delightful afternoon tea. Probably the best afternoon tea experience I have had. The table was set beautifully, the food was varied and delicious, service was excellent and a wide variety of teas on offer. Loved it.
The carraige was cosy and the service outstanding. The pumpkin and sweet potato soup was delicious.
The sandwiches and cakes were enjoyed by all. The tea was cold quickly but there was plenty of extra hot water. Overall a great venue for a treat not cheap but worth it.
Very enjoyable afternoon tea, the hot soup was delicious, the scones lovely and fresh and I could eat every item which is quite rare for me. The service was polite and helpful. Altogether a lovely experience.
Wonderful experience! Hubby and I were visiting York for our 30th anniversary...this was the best afternoon tea we've ever had! It made our week!
It is ideal for a special celebration, something different.
Having threatened for long enough to try afternoon tea at Betty's in York, when we finally got round to arranging it they were fully booked up (school half term). So, we looked elsewhere and this looked to be an even better option. The occasion was our 25th Wedding Anniversary celebration and it was just perfect. Good food, great tea and a really unique setting. We've already recommended it to friends and will probably pay another visit ourselves at some time.
Visited for a joint birthday with my friend. Staff were so nice and attentive. Railway carriage was like going back in time, in a good way. Relaxing, comfortable and peaceful. My friend had vegan food and enjoyed it very much. I had the regular. Loved the starter of a cup of soup and a tiny pastry on a cold, wet day. Sandwiches were replenished, and offers of more tea. We ordered a champagne as a treat which was lovely. This was one of the best afternoon teas I have had. The food and ambiance were so nice. Loved the fact that sittings were at certain times, the carriage was closed, so there was no coming and going. Good idea. Well done and keep up the good work.
Very enjoyable birthday treat. Food spot on and excellent service from the 2 girls.
Extra sandwiches provided. Also spent time in Railway Museum and car park fee refunded which does save you a tenner.
Would recommend and definitely visit again
A lovely peaceful afternoon tea in a beautiful environment.
Great food, lovely service and a rather unique venue. Well worth looking out for when in the museum.
This was our 2nd visit for tea and it was very nice. We did, however, find the desserts not quite as yummy as the 1st time. The cheesecake was quite dry, and the blackberry mousse a little bland. Maybe just an off day? Still a lovely afternoon. The ONLY other thing was that people kept opening the door to peek in, and as we were seated right in front of it - it became quite annoying.
Desite booking for 2 adults, 2 infants we had to wait for highchairs to be brought to the table. We were sat alone in one side of the restaurant away from all other customers. Everyone else was served drinks and food before we were asked what we would like to drink, even though we arrived before them. It took 45 mins for them to bring pre-booked afternoon tea to our table. Everyone else was nearly finished. Made what should have been a special birthday lunch for my little boy, a stressful battle of telling 2 toddlers there lunch was going to be here in a minute over and over. My kids eat out, they are well behaved, they can wait a reasonable amount of time but I as an adult struggled with the wait on this one.
The prettiest place I have ever had afternoon Tea and the food was so good. We had a tiny cup of lovely soup to start and then all the usual delights of an afternoon tea, finger sandwiches (vegetarian ones for my sister) and we were offered extras! Scones and mini pastries, all delicious in lovely surroundings and lovely service. An absolute must if you are visiting York.
Took my mother in law here for afternoon tea as a birthday treat with my husband .
The cakes and sandwiches were very nice though there was only three small finger sandwiches per person on the cake stand it did look a little mean . i think it is a little pricey though I have to say the service was excellent and the quality of the food was good and my mother in law thoroughly enjoyed herself.
This was a lovely venue for my husbands 60th birthday, he thoroughly enjoyed all the food and the quiet atmosphere which gave us the opportunity to talk and catch up with family. We all had a greattime and it and it was my son in laws first experience of afternoon tea and he loved it.
I can not fault this place at all, the staff are amazing, the food is delicious and the surroundings are beautiful.
Our fourth visit, this time to celebrate an elderly friends birthday. Charming staff, delicious food, special venue. There will definitely be a fifth visit!
Have lived in York for 10 years and didnt know this place existed. Fantastic afternoon tea. Wonderful service and great customer service. Would definitely be back to that amazing setting. If you are an Agatha Christie Poirot fan... it is a must!
