Countess of York-National Railway Museum
First class afternoon tea. If you want style and class this is the place to visit.
Perfect afternoon tea. The sandwiches, scones (plus clotted cream), and sweets were delicious, and everything was beautifully presented. Our group included a two-year old—always a potential danger to fine china—but it all went beautifully, thanks in large part to patient and helpful servers. A special feature of a special museum.
The afternoon tea was the best we have had. Will be back for decimate. Lovely vegetarian sandwiches
Everything about this experience was first class. The service, the food and the attention to detail was superb. The only thing that could improve it would be to stop people walking in and staring at you whilst you are eating because they seemed to think it was part of the museum!
Excellent service, it was a birthday treat for my Dad who thoroughly enjoyed it
Excellent location for afternoon tea, if you want something a bit different to the usual I would definitely recommend!
Lovely afternoon tea, ............................. .
Disappointed that the Countess is situated outside the realms of the other engines.
On the day we went it was teeming with rain and we had to cross quite a large yard with no courtesy umbrella or canopy for protection.
The steps and handrail were wet and slippery.
We chose to sit at the back of the quite small carriage where there was a radiator.
The service was quite perfunctory. No quiet background music (some 1930s would have been nice).
Cold pea soup was awful and the tomato tart was about the size of a 50p.
The sandwiches (made up from 2 full slices of bread cut into fingers) were quite fresh but we did ask for another finger each!
I do not think it was worth the £94 and for our wedding anniversary it was quite disappointing.
Food was excellent and service outstanding, 5 tables in the whole carriage so nice and quiet and exclusive dinning. My wife considers her self quite the ‘sconnoisseur’ and she said that the scones were the best she had ever had!! :0)
I have already recommended Countess of York and my brother is planning a trip there! The food was lovely, tea was keep hot and the service was amazing. As well, the atmosphere made it special. Wonderful!
This was a great place to go took my mother in law for her 80th Birthday we had a fantastic time and would recommend this experience to others.
What a lovely experience, having tried many Afternoon Tea’s this was up near the top. Lovely location in a railway carriage, food was delicious but the cream should be clotted and we had to ask for our tea as we’d had champagne to start with, apart from that it was excellent.
Gorgeous after tea. Staff were friendly and attentive but not intrusive. This was a surprise for my 2 friends 50th birthdays and we were not disappointed. All the little extra touches went a long way to making it a special afternoon
excellent experience everything was to our liking and the two young people who served us were excellent too
This was a 60th birthday surprise for my husband. The food and setting were all delightful. The three young men who served us were unfailingly polite and helpful, attentive without being a nuisance. the quality of food was very good. We were pleased to be offered extra sandwiches, however, as we would have still been a little peckish otherwise. it was a lovely experience overall.
Lovely food and great service. We let them know in advance that we were vegetarian so they gave us egg and cheese and pickle sandwiches instead. Everything was excellent and I would recommend the afternoon tea.
Fantastic really great food and service
Had a lovely time
Waiter and waitress are very helpful and polite. Great scones and fabulous dessert choices. I would definitely return to this cafe.
What an amazing special experience this was. The staff were lovely and attentive, couldn't have been more helpful. The atmosphere was luxurious and the food was delicious and stunningly presented. Also was exactly perfect quantities - left us feeling full but not sickly so!
After a busy weekend in York spending time here was delightful. The whole experience was very relaxing and the setting was perfect. Just outside the main museum which was full of families having fun, the dining carriage was peaceful and had just the right amount of tables so as not to be crowded. The service was excellent and the afternoon tea was amazing. A lovely selection of savoury treats including pea and watercress soup, a cheese tartlet and the obligatory finger sandwiches. This was followed by lovely scones, jam, and cream and then some delicious cakes. There was a choice of teas, coffees and soft and alcoholic drinks. A perfect end to a girls weekend away. Highly recommended and at £23 not unreasonable for the quality.
The perfect place to enjoy a wonderful cream tea, after or before visiting the National Railway museum.
What a fabulous experience from start to finish, the staff were so attentive and the food was amazing
Beautiful setting and lovely food for a special occasion. The waiting staff were attentive yet did not hover or make us feel uncomfortable. The background music was a little low so you felt like you had to whisper so as not to bother other diners. As it was a school holiday there were a few children in the gardens outside playing with the carriage doors trying to get in to the tea rooms and the wheelchair lift. It wasn’t the fault of the tearooms but instead of addressing the children or asking them not to rattle the doors they just ignored it which slightly marred the experience. I would highly recommend the afternoon tea though.
The carriage was beautiful and the staff were very pleasant the food was amazing would definitely go back
Best afternoon tea ever. Staff were very attentive throughout. Even offered extra sandwiches before we started on the sweet things. Topped up with coffee when needed. And a gift of 2 x macaroons to take home with us. More expensive than some afternoon tea experiences but well worth the extra cost.
Very nice relaxing atmosphere staff very attentive food was good overall a very good experience would definitely recommend
Fantastic experience. Went for a belated Mother's Day celebration with my family (group of 6 including a young child and a baby). Service was excellent, couldn't fault it at all, the staff were very personable. The setting was wonderful, in the Railway Museum so my children were able to play and see the exhibits before we went for the afternoon tea, in such a special setting on the Countess of York. It was very relaxing even with two kids) and we all had a wonderful, memorable experience.
In general we had a lovely afternoon. My main disappointment was the soup and tart. The soup was lukewarm and the little tart-lets did not taste nice cold.
The sandwiches were delightful and the waitress offered more sandwiches several times. The cakes were absolutely delightful.
The surroundings also were lovely,
However, my overall experience was that I spent a very pleasant couple of hours there.
Very enjoyable experience, transported back in time to a more elegant era.
I have visited the Countess many times now and introduced lots of friends who in turn have re booked and taken new visitors. On Sunday the food was wonderful - pea soup and a little cheese tartlet, followed by sandwiches, scones and delicious little patisseries. I particularly like that you get one each of each offering rather than having the awkwardness of agreeing who wants what! I had mentioned that my friend didn't eat meat and that is was her birthday and they were prepared for us. We had a lovely afternoon
Perfect way to treat Mum on Mother’s Day. Food was lovely and the service was great, many thanks!
The best afternoon tea we've had and the staff were lovely. Apparently the Flying Scotsman was in somewhere to refuel but we couldn't tear ourselves away from the food to go and see.
Everthing about the whole experience was wonderful we went for my Mother in Laws 80th it was a lovely afternoon tea choice of Teas, everything was so fresh
Superb setting wouldn't think you were sitting in a museum. The service was brilliant and staff ensured that were topped up with tea and sandwiches. The food was lovely, scones were a particular highlight. As this was a mother's day treat it was a lovely setting for a special occasion, so would recommend to anyone looking for somewhere special for afternoon tea.
A lovely experience. Staff were very efficient. The afternoon tea was well presented and tasty.
It was a birthday celebration absolutely fantastic food was excellent and service from Joel outstanding ,well worth a visit
Lovely food, attentive service, great surroundings, brilliant ambience.
Will be back!
This was a wonderful birthday treat! Delicious food, fine china and great service in a beautifully restored railway carriage. I particularly liked the savoury starter - soup, with a mini tartlet (not usually on an Afternoon Tea menu!) The sandwiches were really fresh, generously filled and we were offered extras. Light fluffy scones with clotted cream and gorgeous jam were followed by a selection of delicate and absolutely scrumptious sweet treats. Complimentary parking was included too. Would highly recommend!
Food and setting was great but the service from the staff was appalling. I was asked to add a message if I wanted when booking, so as it was for my partners birthday I added a message to say this. No sign of it on the table when we arrived and I had to ask twice before getting an answer that it would appear with the cakes. The happy birthday message was about the size of a stamp. Hardly worth the bother.
Staff weren’t very helpful when we asked about what options were available for changing the food if say one of us didn’t like a specific thing.
Overall the food was ok but very overpriced, the staff could do with learning how to smile and put the customer first.
Nice idea of having the converted carriage but you need to improve your staff.
