Countess of York-National Railway Museum
Atmosphere was lovely. Tables were beautifully set out on arrival. The food was delicious and the service fantastic. Will definately go back
We were disappointed with this experience; having read a review that gushed about the glory days of the Orient Express, this Pullman has seen better days. The food was an OK, rather than delicious (the amuse bouche beet soup barely warm and the crab tartlet soggy. The scone dry and cold. The finger sandwiches soggy - we were asked if we wanted any more but we politely declined). The service was polite and attentive and we received more tea immediately we requested it. I can only assume that, for those partaking on Prosecco or Champagne it produces a rosy gleam to their experience! The surroundings of the Pullman (grandly called The Countess of York) are sad, and the whole area needs a makeover. Just a bad area of York, like so many railway areas in Britain - not a place you’d want to linger (unless you’re a railway enthusiast). I have eaten many a tea in other towns, and this one didn’t come close to any of them. We wished we had chosen The Grand, The Principal, The Ivy or even quaint old Betty’s instead. Sorry, the truth often hurts; perhaps the owners need to take another look through honest eyes? I haven’t even mentioned the (nearby) toilets (smelly and damp) which we hurried away from after desperation made necessity! No I couldn’t recommend this experience.
We were in York for a wedding and had some time to explore. We decided upon this lovely location for tea as my husband had never been to tea. We did the Afternoon Champagne Tea and it all was delicious. There was an nice balance of savory and sweet bites. The champagne was tasty but the tea was truly wonderful. The service was very attentive and forgiving that we were late (got slightly lost walking from the Shambles). The history of the car made for a great setting. My only criticism was that the temperature of the car itself was a bit warm and when sipping hot tea, it compounded the warmth. It didn’t ruin the experience so I wouldn’t warn anyone off but something to note. Overall very enjoyable (and also fun because there wasn’t a dress code)
The service and food was very good, the carriage was just warm enough and very quiet so there was no atmosphere, if there had been more diners the atmosphere would have probably been a lot better.
Really nice food, great with allergies.
Waiting staff absolutely excellent and so helpful and food beautifully presented and gorgeous. The only slightly bad thing was that there were a few very young children there , who were a bit noisy and messy , just spoilt the experience and ambience a little. I have children myself but don’t really think this is suitable for them .
Staff were so friendly and obliging not to mention quick to top up our tea pots! I had requested a gluten free serving and that was very well received with very good substitutes where necessary. We thoroughly enjoyed our food and the whole atmosphere was very relaxed. Highly recommended!
A wonderful experience. Attention to detail. Great service.
Brilliant experience. Service was fantastic and the food was very good. Would definitely recommend.
Exceptional food and service. A wonderful experience for a special occasion,
Fantastic tea loved it. Lovely place to spend the afternoon. The food was delicious so much so we ate the lot.
My second visit here, the standard was just as high as last time.
It was quiet, as we went on a Monday afternoon.
The food is first class an interesting and varied menu. They are extremely accommodating to dietry needs. My friend and I had different diets and it was all carefully explained to make sure it was correct. The choice of tea is extensive.
It's an unusual setting in a railway carriage but everything is set out with white linen table clothes and beautiful china etc.
Very convenient if you combine it with s visit to the railway museum.
Wonderful atmosphere. Friendly and helpful staff. Made for a great visit.
Great ambience and service. No queues. Delicious food served efficiently by friendly and helpful staff who were excellent in dealing with my partner who requires a gluten free diet.
Every thing was marvellous a special occasion treat
A really enjoyable experience would definitely book again should we visit York again
A really lovely afternoon to spend with friends in an unusual and quiet location. Very nice scones and pastries - lovely treat.
It’s my second visit and remains one of my favourite afternoon teas.
Excellent service, very attentive yet not intrusive!
Wonderful setting for a lovely afternoon tea. Easily accommodated vegan and vegetarian guests. Food was fresh and delicious.
We thoroughly enjoyed our Afternoon Tea experience on Sunday. The food and its presentation was excellent made even more so by the friendly, courteous service from the lovely staff. The place settings were also lovely and transported you back in time when afternoon tea etc. was served regularly in similarly splendid surroundings.
Amazing food, very attentive staff, fab venue, can’t say anything bad
A delightful place for afternoon tea.A bit more expensive than Betty's tea rooms, but a nicer atmosphere and no queueing.Lovely food served by a very delightful young lady.Thoroughly enjoyed it .
This is the third time of visiting and we all felt that something was missing this time. It just wasn’t quite as good. The service not as attentive and a foreign waitress and no gloves hands. Just felt standards had slipped and at £25.50 pp it’s not cheap. There are just as good one locally to us.
We had a lovely time having tea. The service was great, attentive but not hovering. The food was very good, and the selection of tea was great. I would definitely recommend this and would go back again.
This was the first time I had been to the Museum and had afternoon tea there. Myself and my daughter enjoyed the occasion very much. The food was lovely and the whole atmosphere was calm and welcoming. The servers were very attentive and professional and we enjoyed the experience very much. Will definitely book again. Thank you
Lovely afternoon tea with family who all throughly enjoyed themselves.
slightly pricey but for a special occasion it was lovely
Beautiful afternoon tea service was outstanding and an interesting walk around the museum
We booked a 2pm slot. The food was lovely and fresh and the staff were attentive. The atmosphere was a bit lacking though. As it’s a train carriage, the tables were close together and our table for two was too small for all the tea pots, water jug, food and plates etc. It was also too quiet and we ended up whispering to each other. Would have benefited from a little music. Overall we were happy though as it was a special occasion.
Lovely setting, service great and beautifully presented food.
The service and the carriage is really nice, however, I think the price £25.50 per person is very steep for what you get. Realistically you probably receive the equivelant of a sandwich per person and the cakes were too sweet and sour for me to eat (and I love cakes!). After spending £51.00 for me and my partner I left feeling sick from the sweetness of the cakes and still hungry from the amount of food received. The carriage itself is nice but the price is definitely not worth what you receive. I've been to much cheaper and better afternoon tea experiences.
A lovely treat: the carriage is beautiful, the service was excellent, high quality tableware and gorgeous food. We couldn't finish all our little pastries so we had them boxed up to take home.
Everything was lovely but i feel it was overpriced based on the size of the portions and compared to other similar afternoon teas i have enjoyed. I would suggest a more reasonable £19-95😀
The staff were excellent
Great experience good value for money
The decor was lovely, however portions were small.
I cannot daily the whole experience. Took my sister for a birthday treat and she loved it too. Food outstanding, not too heavy which some afternoon teas can be, but filling. Lovely setting and friendly efficient staff
Perfect in every way. Wonderful anniversary treat.
The setting is lovely and the service was good. The experience was let down by the food quality.
I would definitely recommend the afternoon tea. The food was good quality and plentiful. The staff were very attentive and the atmosphere was very relaxed.
