Countess of York-National Railway Museum
Expensive but worth it for the ambience and excellent personal service.
Poor food, soup cold, cakes very poor, sandwiches poor. No one spoke, were left wandering what to do. Comparing it to Betty’s for roughly same price no comparison. Would never return or recommend.
Very very disappointed.
A lovely afternoon in very nostalgic surroundings, it was a perfect setting for afternoon tea. The different selectons were lovely and many thanks for the special choice for diabetic member of party. I have already recommended to a number of people. The staff were lovely, polite and friendly. It is a venue with a difference and a full day can be made of it.
Had a brilliant day out at the York Railway Museum, got there at 11 and by the time we went off to enjoy our afternoon tea we still hadnt seen it all. So another visit soon we hope. Thought the staff members wandering round in costume were brilliant! though to be fair it took us a while to realise that they werent just very enthusiastic members of the public. We listened to the talk on the royal trains and the presenter was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic, as were the 2 presenters who demonstrated the turntable in the great hall.
Really recommend booking the afternoon tea in the railway carriage, the food, staff and ambience are brilliant! great value for money as well.
Lovely afternoon staff were very friendly and helpful, would book again.
Disappointed with the service. There should have been more savoury choices. The waitress queried us asking for more sandwiches. She was very aloof and unfriendly. I think it was overpriced and would not visit again.
really enjoyed our afternoon tea they catered well for my veggie/gluten free diet would highly recommend nothing was to much trouble
Overall a delightful experience which my 3 Japanese students enjoyed immensely. My only question is, where can I buy the jam from? Delicious!
Second visit here and this time brought 5 friends to celebrate a special birthday. Couldn’t fault the whole experience/ food, service and ambiance were top notch. Looking forward to our next visit
Excellent location, extremely comfortable, excellent food and very very good service.
Took my granddaughter for a birthday treat she loved it. The food was lovely and the waiter was friendly and extremely helpful. Will definitely be going again.
Fabulous setting, staff couldn't have been more helpful. The food was excellent with a good choice of teas (we had breakfast) and you were offered more sandwicheswhen you had eaten what was on the plate.
A wonderful experience, and a railway carraige saved into the bargain.
Service staff were very attentive. Atmosphere was unique. Food was well presented and varied. Gluten free option was very much appreciated and enjoyed. Would recommend for a special treat!
We had a wonderful afternoon tea, the staff were lovely and the food fabulous! We opted for the 12pm sitting on a Friday and there were only two tables taken (including ours). I would definitely go again and although we went as a couple, the table next to ours had a little girl on it and the staff made her feel very special, which her own tray of sandwiches and cakes. I wouldn’t hesitate in taking our children next time.
Lovely place was very relaxing Service was first class Food was delicious
Staff very attentive and polite, very impressed by the decor.
This was a wonderful experience in an elegant and unique railway carriage. My husband is a coeliac so always an element of concern when ordering gluten free food but I needn't have been worried. Our food came on separate cake stands, beautifully presented, with a very good selection of sandwiches, cakes and scone. Would highly recommend.
Excellent food and service. We had a lovely family afternoon. We would highly recommend it to anyone. Nothing was too much. A nice touch was offering extra sandwiches to those who may have a larger appetite. Loved the valentines chocolates to take home they were delicious.
The carriage ambience was good but not too special.
The service was very good with attentive pleasant staff.
The table settings were good too with attractive silver style cutlery and teapots etc.
The food however I thought was disappointing. Bread not quite fresh - it was 4pm. The sandwich fillings were tiny and therefore not particularly tasty. The scones were tasteless. And only one of the “cakes “ was really good. And of course they were all very small!
So I think the tea content needs an overhaul. Maybe then it would feel like value for money in an unusual environment.
We enjoyed our Afternoon Tea experience as this was also our Golden Wedding Anniversary. Everything was very good but we thought that the pricing was somewhat high based upon our experiences elsewhere.
The waiting staff were rude and dismissive. Very unhappy with how we were treated. Then we were given then wrong passcode for the car park and ended up being stuck in there for 30 mins!!!!
It was our first time having afternoon tea, and we couldn’t think of a better place to have it!
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to The Countess of York, service was second to none, food was delicious.
We had a vodka fizz too, this really pushed the price up, however we went for the experience and it really was wonderful.
I booked this for my Boyfriends 25th Birthday as a suprise extension to railway museum. From the point of entry we were waited on hand and foot and everything was Devine! I'll defo be coming again in the future!
Lovely afternoon tea in a new place for us
Will definitely be back
What a fabulous place !! We had lovely stroll around the Museum first which was fascinating !! The staff were so helpful and enthusiastic spending time with visitors answering "lots" of questions. The service during our Afternoon Tea was second to none and our waiter couldn't have been more helpful. We swapped a few things on the menu with no problem at all. The food was delicious and the decor and attention to detail were exceptional. Overall a truly lovely afternoon. I would highly recommend a visit.
Excellent customer service, and the staff were brilliant. The food was delicious and of a high standard. I would thoroughly recommend this venue.
I booked this following Open Table listing the top 100 restaurants in the UK, this list was false as the 'restaurant' in question is a quaint railways carriage within the national rail museum offering afternoon tea such as scones, small sandwiches, cakes - by any definition it is not a restaurant
Offerings if one likes this type of food were good, service excellent and cute location pleasant
Going for dinner however was a huge disappointment, I will in future be cautious regarding Open Table reviews
Afternoon Tea taken with a group of ladies who are very good friends. The tea was fabulous , plenty of choice especially for me as I'm Gluten Free . I would highly recommend the experience .
Lovely setting for family afternoon tea. Beautiful coach nicely decorated and clean. Food was well presented and the staff were helpful.
Wonderful experience. Nice menu with vegetarian options.
I booked this as part of my husband’s 80th birthday trip to York. From the moment we stepped “on board” to the end of our champagne tea it was lovely. Friendly, welcoming staff. The food selection was excellent and plenty of it. Extra sandwiches if we wanted them and as much tea as we could drink. A really lovely experience in lovely surroundings. Hard to believe we were just across the yard from the bustling railway museum. Thank you
Wonderful afternoon tea, food was great, we were also offered extra sandwiches. Would definitely recommend to others.
Fantastic experience. Will remember this afternoon for a long time.
We had a delicious afternoon tea served by a very efficient, attentive and friendly young man last Wednesday in the Countess of York.
Great location for afternoon tea. Friendly, welcoming staff, delicious food and a great selection of drinks to accompany it.
Fabulous birthday trip and a wonderful way to round off a visit to the museum!
Friendly, courteous staff who work their best to meet customer needs. Elegant surroundings, beautiful silverware and China are all reminiscent of a bygone age. To top it off, food that's looks as wonderful as it tastes. A wonderful treat!
An exceptional experience as a special "one off" occasion to celebrate a friends birthday, highly recommended and enjoyed by all. Joel made sure everything was "just so" and made sure we got the best from the afternoon.
