Arrived with my lady friend and received a warm welcome, we had rebooked so a table was ready for us. The service was impeccable, quiet and unobtrusive, whilst always there if you needed. We had a wonderful 2 hours together with great food and a warm ambience.
Highly recommended.

Beautiful surroundings, attentive special. The special touches placing a Happy Birthday chocolate on the trifle really made my friends day. It added to the 60th birthday celebration.

Operating on the premises of the National Rail Museum in York, the Countess of York emulates the bygone era of rail travel. My wife and I enjoyed a special afternoon tea at the Countess of York. While not originally a railway dining car, the Countess of York presents a credible representation of one from, perhaps the first half of the 20th century. The service was courteous and professional and the food was of an enjoyably high standard. Perhaps costing a little more than a high street café, for us it was a memorable occasion.

A lovely afternoon tea to celebrate a birthday. Food and service excellent and we were offered more sandwiches which was great. We went for the vegetarian option - all very tasty. A really good setting and as we went on a weekday late afternoon slot it was quiet. Would recommend booking for a special occasion or a treat.

I brought my wife to the Countess of York for afternoon tea as part of her birthday day out. The experience was brilliant. The afternoon tea was of high quality, well presented and worth the cost. They provided traditional silver cutlery and teapots with china plates that added perfectly to the occasion. The choice of teas on offer was very good and allowed you to try something different. The quantity of food was great with them offering extra finger sandwiches if you wanted them after you had finished the first ones, which was a good touch. You got plenty of tea and you could ask for more! All in all the experience was very good and my wife really enjoyed it. I would recommend the Countess of York if any one wanted a high quality, quiet and relaxing afternoon tea. Brilliant!

Wonderful experience for my friends and I. couldn't fault the food, catering for veggies and didn't know this but for diabetics also. AS my friend was a diabetic her choice was limited, so the lovely waitress Katie made up a doggy bag for her with more sandwiches that she could eat to take home.
The ambience was great. A lovely afternoon, will definitely visit again.

We had afternoon tea for my Mum's birthday, to be able to take my Mum and Dad round the National Railway Museum at the same time. My parents are in their 70s, my Dad is in a wheelchair with other medical problems. The staff were very welcoming and helpful and accommodated Dad in his wheelchair with ease and efficiency. The food was wonderful and we weren't rushed in any way. We were offered plenty of refills of drinks and sandwich refills. The only drawback - which didn't affect the occasion in any way for us and the staff did their best to deal with the situation at all times, was the number of children looking through the window/opening the door thinking that it was another carriage to look inside. We would highly recommend this for a special occasion or just a pleasant refreshment stop whilst in York.

Went with mum to celebrate her 70th and my two teenage daughters. We ordered two adult afternoon teas and two childrens. Requested NO fish on either. From the moment we walked up the steps to the carriage, to the moment we left with our complimentary macarons, everything was amazing. The ambience, service, quality and choice of food made such a memorable visit. Highly recommend.

The experience of dinning in a Edwardian style train carriage is what you pay for ... the food, cream tea, was very forgettable, extremely over priced and i have had far tastier and home made in local cafes for less than half the price.

Great experience in the National Rail Museum York, excellent value for afternoon tea and you get the parking for free
Ensure you book as there is limited seating in restaurant carriage and sittings are 12.00 14.00 16.00
if we visit the museum again we definitely eat again - much better than other dining options on busy days

We enjoyed the experience although i think the photos glamorises it slightly. it is not as opulent as one is led to believe.
The service was ok but the staff are not very friendly or smiling. Although we were offered another sandwich we were never asked if we wanted a fresh pot of tea.
the food was very tasty but nothing outstanding considering it costs a lot more than a high street afternoon tea. There was only one other couple in there at 4.00 on an August afternoon, due to the high cost I think.
The rhubarb trifle was extremely good and the choice of tea is very wide.

Our family of four ended our road trip through England and Wales. We loved cream teas in (jam first) Cornwall, afternoon tea at the Countess was a complete experience. The setting was like an Agatha Christie novel, food was great, staff attentive but unobtrusive. Plus, we thoroughly enjoyed walking through the museum afterward. Highly recommended.

We came up from London for the day to the Museum. It was my Grandaughters 9th birthday within a few days. It was a nice treat and an experience to sit in a period carriage and have an afternoon tea and refreshments. Her 7 yr old brother enjoyed it too. The sandwiches and cakes were lovely and fresh. The staff were very polite and attentive to our needs. We had an excellent day, and this was the 'icing on the cake'.

We visited with 2 friends to celebrate a special birthday. One of the party needed wheelchair access which was very straightforward and the staff were extremely helpful and discrete. The service was very good and the quality of the food was lovely.
The only slight negative was the number of children outside the carriage looking in the windows and knocking on the door. The waitress tried her best to dissuade them however in their eyes I suspect this was just another carriage to look at.
Perhaps a chain across the bottom of the steps stating no admittance as customers dining might help. That said It was a minor issue and wouldn't stop me recommending a visit to friends.

Took my mum for afternoon tea on the Countess of York. Lovely to sit in the old Pullman style carriage with the usual white linens and silverware. Tea was excellent and very filling from the gazpacho chilled soup served with the coronation filo tartlet to the warm scones with vanilla cream and jam, followed by lovely selection of cakes (not forgetting the Rhubarb trifle!). Service was also very good with offers of more drinks and sandwiches.

My only comment was that the loo on the carriage was out of order which meant a trek outside over to the museum which was not ideal especially for an elderly parent.

Also the carriage was very warm as a result of the lovely sunny weather outside. Perhaps some sort of cooling fans would have helped.

All in all it was a lovely way to spend a couple of hours. Definitely would recommend booking in advance and would say that this is a better option than having to queue for Betty's in the town. This was a bit more out of the ordinary, every bit as special and not so expensive!
