The “Crab and winkle” at Whitstable is an exquisite dining experience. If you love “Fish” then a visit is not to be missed.

The restaurant overlooks a working Harbour, fish from the local boats is sold both in the restaurant and fish market below. This is why we can offer some of the finest fish and seafood in the area, with wine to complement.

How did we begin! The journey began in May 1830 with George and Robert Stephenson as supervising engineers. The first train called the “invicta” was based on the design of the rocket and left Canterbury at 11.25am to the sound of the cathedral bells, cannons firing and bands playing. Day-trippers came from Canterbury to bathe in the sea and to enjoy the wonderful sea food which Whitstable was and still is famous for.

Hence the affectionate nickname..

These premises close at 10pm. The Crab & Winkle Story: The 'Crab & Winkle' was the nickname of the very first steam driven passenger railway in the world which ran from Canterbury to Whitstable Harbour. It opened on the 3rd May 1830, with George & Robert Stephenson as supervising engineers. The Crab and Winkle Resturant was no longer there as it had burnt down a month before. Very sad for them but we had to phone around to find a booking somewhere else as we had not been notified.

Really enjoyed my visit to Whitstable. My husband and I booked a table before leaving home to be sure of a one . We have dined there several times and always have found the seafood delicious . I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

What a dreadful service! We booked a table for 5 but there were only 4 places set.We had to ask 3 different waiters and wait far too long for cutlery and glasses for the fifth person while the other 4 had their drinks already served.The boy who eventually brought the cutlery was picking the knives from the tip of the blade (rather than the handle). A waitress was doing something similar with the wineglasses(fingers on the inside of glasses) The only member of staff old enough to know better (I think he was the manager?) seemed to be totally oblivious to what was going on. The waiting to take orders and in between dishes was excessively long. We ordered a beer at the beginning of our main dish which never arrived. And they charge you SERVIC

Having read some reviews about poor service at this restaurant, I was pleasantly surprised. Our waitress was friendly and efficient and we didn't have to wait too long for our lunch to be served. Our first two choices of wine were unavailable but the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc was excellent. The food was very good - I would certainly recommend the sea bass fillet with oriental noodles. The only down side was at the end of our meal a young man asked if we would like coffee and gave us a menu, however he didn't return to take our order so we gave up, paid our bill and left. The Crab & Winkle is a bit on the expensive side for a restaurant outside London but for a special occasion it fits the bill.

We had dinner there in April 2009. It is a lovely looking restaurant with a beautiful view over the harbour. If you're after a romantic night out book a table by the window. We went with our 5 year old who was offered a child's portion of fish and chips and ice cream. My husband and I were more adventurous. We had: - mussells - small but v tasty - razor clams - delicious - mackerel - delicious - fish & chips - lovely fish but the batter was a little soggy. The service was a little slow and the found the prices a little higher than we were expecting.
