Wife and I have been 2-3 times for birthdays/anniversaries and it's always a treat. Lovely building, and the food/wine are fantastic. We've always received good service (despite some hiccups with specific dietary requirements!) and been made to feel very welcome. Well worth the drive from Cambridge and hope to visit again soon. Some great rooms upstairs, with an excellent breakfast to boot.
We had a really smart chap serving us , patient and knowledgable , the food was awesome , huge portions but also great quality ! Looking fwd to going back !
I'd give full marks if we had been in the main restaurant. Our dining area was a little cold and lacked the atmosphere of the main room It was still good tho , but I have to compare ...
We've always loved the Crown, so cosy, friendly and comfortable. Food is delicious, never disappoints.
The food was great, but the service was poor. The waitress was very young and clearly untrained. She left us sitting there way too long before coming to give us menus and then forgot to ask if we wanted drinks, then went to get the wine menu. Generally very poor service.
A very pleasant restaurant, good food, attentive staff in a picturesque rural setting. Historic pub and hotel, lovely fire, very cosy.
Made very welcome. Good menu choices. The calves livers were superb. Excellent service too.
Sunday lunch to celebrate a birthday. Beautiful old building, lovely atmosphere in the bar and dining room, real fire, families and couples enjoying their food in relaxed surroundings. Welcoming staff, excellent roast beef and outstanding apple crumble. What more could anyone want on a cold day in January!
Picture-perfect inn in a pretty village, the Crown serves great food in a very traditional British pub setting. The menu had enough choices to satisfy even my picky daughters, but not too many to suggest that pre-packaged food was being used. The beer choices again were great - enough to showcase local brewers, but not too many to make keeping and serving them in top condition too tricky. Well worth driving through some pretty countryside to find this place.
I have only given this lovely venue 2 stars because we had a really rather disappointing lunch for four people there on 2nd January. The bar area was very crowded but the restaurant was not - only one other table was occupied as we sat down although this increased to four later. I am not sure if the same girls were serving in the bar and were therefore too busy but we were not offered either drinks or menus without having to ask for them and the service throughout was slow. Someone came out from the kitchen to serve the puddings so perhaps there just weren't enough staff on. Two of our party were quite happy with their food and enjoyed both courses, the Mushroom Wellington being particularly good, but the other two were disappointed by under-cooked aubergine and a very bland baked apple respectively. Just to further explain the two stars, our corner of the room got very chilly as the nearest radiator went from fairly warm to cold!
However, we have known The Crown for almost thirty years and do intend to go back and give it another try ....
We met up with friends just before Christmas. I'd pre booked and just as well as there were plenty of people there. Despite that, the food was excellent and the service was attentive without being suffocating. I would definitely come back and would not hesitate to recommend this to others.
The Sunday lunch was cooked to perfection delicious, I would like to have been offered mustard or horse radish though, also that table rocked so much thought I was on a boat ⛵️
Food excellent and good value for money. Just far too warm inside!
Have eaten here several times with friends - very convenient position midway between us. Food good but probably won't be eating here again as I am allergic to garlic and there was very little that I could eat because nearly everything savoury had garlic. ALL the nibbles had garlic.
Meeting cousins from Greece it proved very attractive as an authentic Old English inn. The food was first rate and the service attentive and friendly. Parking can be a problem but we just sqeezed into a slot.
The service was extremely poor. Whilst we don't want the waiting staff on top of us all the time we don't want to be ignored!! We waited an unconscionable time for our sweet order to be taken and in the end we gave up as bad job.
With one of the orders the soup (which should have been hot) was cold but we couldn't ask for it to be reheated because no-one came near us.
We had a guest from Yorkshire with us having told her how good the Crown was. It was a massive let down.
Great ambience, excellent food - best Sun lunch you can get
The crown is lovely, the food was beautifully cooked and presented and the service was excellent. Un fortunately our lunch was ruined by a very loud, opinionated old bore whose terribly affected 'posh' accent drove us all mad
We tried this pub after a days shopping , the setting is lovely, a quaint English village setting . As soon as you walk in your made to feel welcome by the staff, the food was very tasty , reasonably priced and the inside of the pub is like walking back in time , with the wood panneling , big fire places. We will definatly come again
Such a nice old feel pub. Great for winter next to the fire and the service was great.
Worth the drive for a nice old pub in a small country village.
The Crown was chosen as an ideal mid-point meeting place for a friends re-union. It was an ideal location and excellent venue for lunch and lingering well into the afternoon. The food choices were excellent, well presented and enjoyed. Will definitely use again.
While the food was very good, I'm sorry to say that the service was terrible. Our waitress was extremely inattentive; when we were first shown to our seats she said she would be back with menus however after 15 minutes of waiting, although she was walking around the area she failed to bring us menus. My brothers girlfriend went to the waitress station to grab us some, only for an abrupt and rude manager to come over and inform us that we had the wrong menus. We did get correct menus and placed our order, but again the service was very slow to notice when one of our party had finished her starter. Overall, I was very disappointed by the lack of attentiveness, especially when it wasn't overly busy. The saving grace was that the food was delicious and there was loads of it, but unfortunately I won't be returning here in a hurry.
Thoroughly enjoyable Sunday lunch with a friend visiting Surrey. Beautiful building and cosy, traditional decor. Delicious food. Good vegetarian option. Pleasant service at a busy period. Will definitely be back soon!
Lovely roast dinner.very quick service and friendly staff
We visited for our 30th Anniversary, and also stayed in one of the rooms with a four-poster bed. The whole experience was memorable
Beautiful surroundings with lovely and comfortable chairs
Excellent service supplying good and tasty food.
Nice country out style meal, great quality and service
A beautiful, historic gastropub with plenty of character in a charming village. Excellent food and service - highly recommended..!
This pub was chosen for a family get together as we have been here twice before the food and service was great then but this time it was a bit of a let down as the yorkshires and roasties were very well done and the gravy was very watery so we were disappointed as we were some of the first diners at lunch time.
Unfortunately, I chose a vegetarian option, a 'Wellington', which was inedible. It was all pastry, which was like rock, and no filling. This was swiftly replaced by an alternative dish, but the ambience was spoiled.
Others enjoyed their lunch.
Wine at £8.50 a glass for a mediocre Sauvignon? Yes, Chiddingfold is a pretty place but I am afraid we will not be returning.
Very poor food not a patch on its old reputation!!!
Always great food and great service....steaks are excellent!
Excellent wait staff we arrived after a large group but were served very efficiently
Met up with family for Sunday lunch, which was very good quality and interesting menu. This is a relaxing pub with a nice bar area which seems popular, although we did not use it. Atmosphere throughout is friendly and helpful. Our maitre d' - a young girl - was very efficient, but the serving staff seemed a little lost at times. Took rather a long time to get any mint or horseradish sauce, or mustard. Surely these are standard for roast lunch and should have been ready? Starters were interesting and different. Puddings, which we didn't have, also looked good.
Halfway stop so we could have lunch with my parents, prior to them travelling on to Heathrow to fly back home. We'd much rather have sat here having a fabulous meal than sit in a Heathrow Terminal eating some also-ran meal. Great food in a quick turn-around. Thanks.
Lovely up and down property with lots of little nooks and crannies for all types of dining/drinking styles. Service was pleasant and courteous.
Lovely food at an decent price, easy online booking but an excellent service espically from our waitresses, Charlotte Wood. Have highly recommended to friends and family and will be back soon
The food was ok - nothing better than that - it took ages to come out though, despite the restaurant not being that busy and us asking for really quick service especially for our 2 year old son as he was hungry and starting to get bored (not ideal as all other diners can vouch for) - we ended up cancelling his dessert as part of his meal deal as we waited 15 mins for a scoop of ice cream..... my wife and I only had mains - chicken and rice and a ploughmans - these took 45 mins to come and as I say quite average when they did. Will go to one of the other many good pubs in the area next time
Beautiful food and huge portions in lovely surroundings, however won't return because sadly this is another pub that hires inexperienced school kids to wait on tables...such exceptionally poor service. This was tackled several times during our visit but fell on deaf ears.
All too often, this is becoming the norm. It really is a shame.
Very impressive building with good food and friendly staff, the vibe as a group of friends with kids wasn't quite as relaxed though.
We ate at the Crown last Thursday as a birthday meal for my mother. The setting was lovely and very relaxing. The food was delicious and our waitress was really helpful. We all had a lovely evening. I would definitely recommend it to a friend.
