Cullens at The Cottage
The Perfect Summer Setting
This traditional thatched cottage provides a relaxed dining experience with international and local dishes inspired by our owner Beatrice Tollman.
Open in the summer months, it’s just a short stroll over the bridge from the castle.
The food was bland. Crab claws with undercooked boiled potatoes did not look or taste appetizing, but my complaint was promptly dealt with & my replacement was a big improvement. My real complaint is with the seating arrangements - obviously fitting in more customers was more important than the 2m self distancing. I was sitting at the back (near fish tank) with my sister at a table for two & either side of us, two other tables for two. However, a group of 4 came in later & were seated directly behind me, with one of the guys pushing my chair as he settled himself comfortably into his! The waiter then arrived down with some bread/tapenade for the couple on my left & asked if I could pull my chair in a bit so he could pass!!! As the lady on my left said “it’s not you he should be asking to move, but the person behind you”. I tried to move closer but when it was obvious there wasn’t an inch between me & the guy behind me, the waiter then handed the bread over my head. At that stage, I was well & truly ready to leave, never to return.
I don't usually write reviews but when a restaurant is this good you need to shout it from the thatched roof. We went two nights in a row it's that good.
If you love seafood it will be up there with the best restaurant in Ireland but there is plenty on the menu even if fish is not your thing. Cullens at The Cottage is all about quality produce that has such flavour when it comes to your plate you can only be impressed by the chefs in that kitchen. We had the crab claws, crab arancini, spring rolls, surf & turf, seafood tangletelli and steak over the two nights and all were exceptional. The bread to start is also the best bread I've had to date anywhere.
This is a hidden gem for Ashford Castle and Ashford Lodge guests and you have to visit. The staff make you so welcome and are genuinely so nice and so knowledgeable about the food and wines. Organising a lift back to the Lodge in the rain are nice touches. It also looks great which is a bonus. Ashford Estate should be very proud of what they achieved here.
Really enjoyable meal. Food was excellent and service was very attentive, we were made feel like special guests. Thank you.
Beautiful food, reasonable price and excellent attentive staff
An absolutely beautiful fish restaurant which produces other items too, and provides great quality at a reasonable price. Highly recommended.
Excellent. Great service. Loved the bobotie spring rolls!
Our booking was for 7.30 pm we arrived at 7.15 and we were seated in a cozy corner of the restaurant.
The waiter left us with our menus and took our drinks order
The food was amazing from start to finish.
It was on the pricey side but when you’ve had a meal so good it was well worth it.
Irish prices for mediocre food. Wine was also not better than average.
Thank you to Clare and team for their hospitality in Cullens at The Cottage. Food and service were excellent.
The service was lovely but I found the food disappointing. In fact, I had the worst dessert I’ve ever had.
I would recommend this restaurant, the whole dining experience was excellent.
Cute little restaurant but wish we had a view of the castle from our table. Food was good. Service was excellent.
Great experience and a wonderful meal to start a perfect day at the castle.
We loved it and they made us feel special. We would highly recommend eating there.
Great experience, cozy and inviting. Enjoyed the food, langoustines were tasty! Peri chicken was a delicious blend of flavor, portion was more than I could eat so the leftover bird made a nice snack. Would eat there again when staying on the property
Overall disappointed. We had booked well in advance but had to sit at the bar whilst they made the table ready and wasn’t that full. We then had to ask for service at the bar whilst 3 waiters stood around. Table Service was ok but not very attentive. Menu limited. Food was nicely presented but nothing special considering the price. We’ve experienced much better.
Lovely informal meal at the cottage.
Ambiance cozy and comfortable
We had a wonderful meal at Cullens at the Cottage, the food was outstanding and the staff where extremely helpful, attentive and friendly, we loved it.
THANK YOU :)
We had a fab lunch there on Sunday - we booked it to celebrate our twins' 13th birthday - I had sent an email asking if there could be decorations or something on the table so I was really disappointed when the table was bare however, after dinner, the staff came out with 2 desserts and sang happy birthday to the twins - just fab - thank you so so much.
I was looking for the page on fb so I could post a note and photo bu tthere doesn't seem to be a fb page.
What a cute dining experience! We really enjoyed a walk on the grounds before our lunch and arriving slightly early due to sudden rainfall were glad to be readily accommodated by staff.
A pleasant & comfortable lunch followed. I really enjoyed the steak sandwich. Our toddler was as delighted with his pasta as he was with the lobster tank!
This is a lovely restaurant with interesting items on the menu, all beautifully prepared and delicious. We will be returning tomorrow for dinner there.
A very attractive setting, adjacent to the Hotel at Ashford. The food is pleasant, its bistro style and the environment is quite relaxed. A very pleasant experience and a pleasant addition to our stay at Ashford.
Very good food and as there were seven of us we were given a nice quiet corner so we could talk and relax without disturbing other diners.
Wonderful service and great food. We enjoyed our meals and look forward to the next visit.
Lunch at Cullen's at the Cottage was an exceptional meal during our trip through Ireland. The service was outstanding and the food was exceptional. I ordered the mussels, and they were cooked beautifully. The serving was huge, and ended up sharing it with most of my table. Everyone enjoyed the oysters, they had a lovely mild flavor. Other fish and seafood dishes were also beautifully prepared. The restaurant is small and nicely decorated with nautical elements. Even though we were dressed down from the Hawk walk experience, we felt comfortable and welcomed. Would return again and highly recommend if you are on the grounds, or looking for something more special.
The price point was a little high for the overall quality of the experience.
Not as expensive as I thought it would be. If you want to eat in the castle grounds, this has a nice view of the castle itself if you're outside.
Best oysters in the world!
The price was a little too high for what we received. Since we already had to pay just to get onto the grounds to eat there we should have expected the high prices but we expected the quality to be better. It was just OK.
Beautiful thatched roof cottage restaurant at the Ashford Castle. Quaint little garden in front. Small bar but good bartender. Nautical themed restaurant. Food was very good. Would definitely recommend it. (The lobster was yummy!)
We would fully recommend Cullen’s at the Cottage. The food was delicious and the staff were excellent (in particular Clare Jennings). Afterwards, relaxing outside, sipping wine with marvellous views of Ashford Castle made the whole experience, perfect.
Overall it wasn’t bad, but I expected more given the location. I think it’s a good choice for family dining, but couples are better served by eating at one of the restaurants inside Ashford Castle instead.
This was a beautiful place. The service was excellent and the food was delicious.
Very high quality food. The ceviche was outstanding as were the oysters.
Lovely evening at Cullens, Really good choice of menu for 2019. Our food was really lovely, good portion size and the service was excellent. We will back again soon. Thanks
Honestly amazing food and great servjcd
A wonderful location. Wish it had windows overlooking the castle. Food was good but not great. Not a restaurant for foodies. Salmon was fresh. I had the Osso Bucca and it was dry. Split a salad and it need more dressing. The bread was a disappointment. Ended up with vegan bread. Deconstructed their chocolate fudge Sunday and it was okay.
Great place for seafood. Excellent service and setting.
