Lovely restaurant but only come here if you eat like a mouse ! The amount of food put on your plate is ridiculous and at a costly price!
£7 for the grilled sardines starter for which you receive the 4 smallest sardines imaginable.
£22 for the beef of which you receive 3 tiny chunks on top of some sort of potato and some greens.
And unfortunately it was a visit to the toilet for the both of us as soon as we got home !
As I said lovely restaurant and great service but a massive no to the food !
An entirely memorable 'couple's' birthday event due to the superb service, food and ambience. We chose this restaurant especially, and were not disappointed. Bravo!
Last visited a few years ago for my Son's graduation celebration meal. My daughter is now at Kent Uni and we chose this visit to Deesons to celebrate her Birthday. A great evening was had by all. Thank you
The service was very poor compared to a previous visit. With hardly anybody in the restaurant I had to go find a waiter on at least three occasions. Music was blaring out from one of their smart phones connected to the audio system. The food is good but a very measly portion of beef. i told the waitress but she wasn't interested. The staff really didn't care. I'll look for somewhere else in Canterbury for Sunday lunch.
The restaurant had been recommended to us for a special occasion so our expectations were quite high (the beautiful view from the loo was also mentioned!) However, we were very disappointed. Service (on a 6.30pm booking) was slow and not particularly friendly. A main course of beef (requested 'the rarer the better') came overcooked and cold on a cold plate. A main of chicken breast was bland with no flavour in the supposedly truffle gnocchi. Coming in at £72 for 2 courses, 2 beers and 1 soft drink, we certainly didn't feel it offered value for money. Whilst there was a lovely view of the cathedral from the toilet, the seat was broken and the floor was filthy. We left, underwhelmed and bought dessert elsewhere on the journey home, leaving drinks unfinished. A shame as much was promised. With so many excellent places to eat in the city centre, we certainly won't return, nor would we recommend.
I chose here on a recommendation from a friend to celebrate by Graduation. The food was superb and the staff very efficient. Definitely recommend and will return again.
On arrival we were greeted by friendly staff and shown straight to our table. The speed of service was good, you didn't feel rushed or left out. Could not fault the meal and during dessert as we were celebrating a birthday a plate with "happy birthday" written in chocolate sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream was brought to our table, which I thought was a nice touch as it wasn't over done but a subtle nod towards the event we had booked for.
My girlfriends birthday meal was a treat. Super tasty food, friendly service and they brought out a happy birthday pudding after I mentioned on the booking notes. Will deffo be going again. Also alot cheaper than local rumours led me to believe, starters, two drinks and mains under £100...bargain for the level of quality.
I have been to this restaurant many times and have always been pleased with the food and service. Food is excellent and service very good but the restaurant can get very noisy when busy. So Friday evening is better than Saturday.
Amazing, friendly and good atmosphere
Great New Year’s Eve family dinner, good food, nice atmosphere
Great family run restaurant in the heart of Canterbury; great place to meet up with a group of friends , a special date or family meet up. Local produce and experienced staff working well to produce a good night out.
Fantastic as usual, but cold, but it was Christmas eve
Dependably consistent with quality of food, friendly and efficient service, easy atmosphere, local community feel, amenable fellow diners, home grown and raised ingredients from their own small-holding, longevity, comfortable interior with spacious table placings, central location close to the cathedral, reasonable and fair prices and convenient access. What more could one possibly want in a favourite restaurant?
Cozy, food is good !
Fabulous meal, in a fabulous location.
We've been here several times and have never been disappointed.
Word of warning, make sure you book first.
Never had a bad experience here, great food, great atmosphere.
Superb food and wine, friendly and professional service, the place to be in Canterbury!
Great service, great food. Went there for our wedding anniversary. I prefer booked two glasses of champagne. When dessert came out, the chef had done a nice little chocolate swoosh and written happy anniversary on it, great touch.
We ate there while spending a few days in Canterbury. Very good location. Good food and service. Nice Christmas atmosphere, without being over the top.
Deesons is my favourite place for Sunday roast! Delicious local produce and wines and great friendly service
This was one of many trips to Deeson’s! Never disappointed! Whole experience is amazing and worth every penny!
We both loved this restaurant, really exceptionally good food. Very generous portions so I struggled to have room for pudding but couldn't resist the seasonal fruit crumble with vanilla custard and it was absolutely delicious! We had dinner at a 2 Michelin star restaurant in London the week before and I can honestly say we both enjoyed the food more at Deesons.
Outstanding food, as usual. I was concerned about the scaled down menu before we arrived but the food was exceptional, as was the service.
Pheasant, Beef and Fish & Chip meals were incredible! Always a wonderful, flavourful and big meal!
Excellent service and good food as always. Interesting menu
Eaten here on a number of occasions never fails to impress and my last meal was the best yet massive thank you to the chef and all the staff, keep it best restaurant in Canterbury by a long way!!! 😃
Love this restaurant ,love the food, the people and the ambience....really pleased that I live near and can access it easily.
Fantastic food, attentive staff and just a real treat for the 4 of us who ate there.
If I am ever in Canterbury again I will be sure to return. Dont hesitate, just book now!
A wonderful meal - shared roast beef- and wonderful efficient service
Fabulous food and wonderful service
Came here for my 2 Year Anniversary with my Girlfriend. Lovely restaurant, helpful staff, tasty food. Moderate noise simply because of a large group that we were forewarned about that came in shortly after us, but didn't spoil the evening
no longer a set menu which was a shame as it was very good value, food is good but for quick lunch can be a littel expensive, fish and chip 14.50, my duck was excellent, service good, wine good, got a bit steamy as it was wet and the floor was quite slippy.
Lovely Food as always and service was Excellent. It was very warm in the restaurant which we found slightly uncomfortable, so we didn’t have pudding or coffee because of this .
After years of visiting with nothing but great experiences, we were surprised to find on arrival that the menu advertised on their website was not available. The wine on the menu we wanted had also been replaced. We all had chicken for the main, which was clearly defrosted and not fresh. To top it off, the surprise birthday ice cream scoop which was brought out after the main course was added to the bill without even requesting it !!
Very sad to have experienced what seemed a shambles in the running of Canterbury's once greatest restaurant.
I had contacted the restaurant the previous day to advise them of dietary restrictions, e.g. no dairy.
DUCK, WALNUT AND KALE WITH A SWEET SAUCE: in a blind tasting, I could not have guessed that the (somewhat chewy) meat was duck, because the strong, sweet flavour of the sauce overwhelmed it. A cheerful waiter danced up with a couple of slices of toast and butter - I'm not sure how they were perceived to accompany this dish and I declined them.
LAMB RUMP WITH HISPI CABBAGE, CARROTS, MINTED POTATOES AND GRAVY: I'm a bit mystified why a cut of lamb from the rear of the beast was also described as "scrag end" - a cheap cut from the neck! Kent lamb ( especially marsh lamb) is famous for its sweet-salt flavour and tenderness. Though properly tender, the flavour of this meat was overwhelmed by a strong, salty gravy. Both the cabbage and carrots were overcooked and soft and had lost some flavour. Potatoes tasted 'new': were they 'local'?
DESSERT was a small bunch of fresh grapes, at my request. The local Barnsole wine was excellent, service (other than the 'toast' event) very good.
I applaud the intention to use local produce, all the more so if it is grown as organically as possible - but don't 'spoil' it by not trusting the quality and flavour of the main ingredients.
The quality of British cuisine has shot up in the last twenty years: though the food was nicely presented, Deeson's will need to up its game to compete.
An excellent dinner.
We have been planning to go to Deesons for a while. We went last week for
My husband’s birthday x
The wood pigeon starter was tasty and soft.
My sea bass with a shellfish sauce on a bed of crushed new potatoes was wonderful.
My husband had the saddle of lamb which came served pink .
For desert I had a home made snickers bar! It was deeply choclatey and full of crunchy peanuts!
As a surprise for my husband he was given vanilla ice cream on s plate written Happy birthday!
A lovely meal!
Thoroughly excellent all round. Lovely food, staff, ambience a highly recommended.
My wife and I visited Deeson's to celebrate our wedding anniversary during our recent stay in Canterbury. We decide to visit Deeson's with no pre knowledge ,and only using previous reviews and we found this restaurant excellent in value, great atmosphere, with the staff who were attentive without being over fussy.
The service was quick and very efficient ,again with staff well informed regarding menu choice. Added to these recommendations was the fact that many of the food choices were locally sourced. I would have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant to anyone visiting the city for any occasion, a great British restaurant serving wonderful food in style very well.
The staff were friendly and welcoming. The food was great and really good value for money, I would thoroughly recommend a visit.
