We had their Omakase 3 Courses menu at £65pp which we thought it was good value, considering it includes the sashimi selection and wagyu steak which already exceeded this price. We were full afterwards that we couldn't finish the side dishes. Most dishes were beautifully presented, very tasty and well-portioned (except for the tempura which was greasy and the no-miso miso soup). However, the toro and wagyu were not top of the range, while they are tender and fresh, they lacked flavours.

The service was very friendly and efficient, but I feel they need a little more attention to detail for an upmarket Japanese restaurant. They do not inform the customers of sushi & sashimi etiquette (e.g. don't mix the wasabi into the soy sauce and eat white fish then darker fish etc). I guess they want to keep it casual and it's not essential, but it would be nice to know they have that knowledge. The restaurant is very small so the tables are very close together and very small for their signature boxes, which I understand they can't do much about that. Hopefully, they will have the budget/intention to move to a bigger site soon to elevate the dining experience.

The food was overall very good, but the chefs special course was poor. The staff weren’t rude, but fairly disinterested, we had our courses sat in front of us but no explanations - when the starter has 11 items, it might be nice to know what they are.

Went there for my anniversary and I am pleased about the overall food and service, waygu beef was very nice and met in the mouth but there were bits that were just not very nice like the miso soup and the tempura.

This was second time I went this restaurant.
It was brilliant when I went first time. But this time was very bad!!
I ordered 11 assorted bento box . It’s not worth for 40 pounds. It’s used be very good. But I could see it’s clearly cost cutting this time. I am not going there anymore.

Food was all right. The old lady “waitress” rushed our food even when I asked for a 15 minute break for our next course. She also tried to take our plate when we weren’t finished yet and she was very impolite. After that; the 4th course came when we were still having our 3rd course. If you WANT to rush your dinner and eat delicious food, this would be a highly recommended place.

We went to celebrate my boyfriend's 28th birthday, and what a celebration it was. He is a big sushi fan, and the 3 course omakase was both very filling, and also so tasty. The place is quite small, but for us it just made it more of an intimate dinner, as there were no big parties. The sashimi was a delight, with amazing flavor combinations, and very tasty fish. It comes in a wooden box, each in its own compartment, and pretty ceramic plates. But what we wanted to try was the wagyu beef, which was really surprising, because I never gave much thought about all the hype. But it's true. That was amazing, I don't really know how to explain, but it was the most fragrant, soft, and succulent meat I have ever had. We were really happy with the experience, the staff was really polite and caring, and my boyfriend got a little fruit plate dessert written "happy birthday" on it. It was a very nice touch, and I was really happy for how well the evening turned out. I would definitely recommend as a special outing.

Food is best in London. Absolutely brilliant. All dishes are prepared and presented with utmost care. I am blown away by the attention to details. Sitting is an issue though. You will bump into the customer sitting next table or the server going around. However recommended for the top quality dishes.

It was the second time I went to Engawa, this time with guests, after a good experience I had had in the past, when I had ordered the menu for £85 pounds and left thinking that (for the first time) food was both substantial in quantity and amazing in quality.

Imagine my and my guests’ surprise (disappointment, rather) when - ordering the meat - they received 5 STAMP-SIZED (literally), thin slices of meat for the cost of £40 pounds. Nothing added to the dish. Literally 5 slices, 1 inch x 1 inch big.
We left hungry and disappointed.
The service was distracted and vague. They should have clarified what we were going to receive ordering that Waygu beef dish and possibly recommend the menu. We ended up spending as much as if ordering a menu of 85 £ each and felt disappointed.

I seldom write a review for a restaurant. But the experience that I had here was so bad that I think I have to share with more people. We ordered the omakase 3 course meals for dinner. Because it was omakase, we didn' t know what were in the meal until the food arrived. There was crab in the starter. I have allergy to crab. We then told the same staff who seemed the manager there. She replied, "I asked if you have any allergy and you said no!". She then went away without changing my starter. In fact, she did NOT ask if we have any allergy when we ordered.

Also, we asked for recommendation of sake. We told the manager that we didn't want to go for the wine/sake pairing because it would be too much for us. We asked if she can recommend a bottle of sake to match the wagyu steak. She kept saying if we chose the sake pairing, we would not need to pick one ourselves. We repeated the question again but she insisted the sake pairing without giving us any suggestion of sake to match with the wagyu steak. We were fed up and decided not having any sake/wine at all.

The food was ok but a bit overpriced. The other waiter who served us was also nice. But this manager is very rude. This is even worse than the quality of service that I would expect for a £10 meal! If you want a HAPPY meal, my very sincere advice is don't go there! It will ruin your mood.

The counter top seats were uncomfortable, our back got touched when the server passed by us. Order the sake wine pairing, the waiter had very limited knowledge on the origin and the characteristics of each sake served. We had to ask for the bottle to know what we were drinking. Overall, the quality of the food and sake were good but a little disappointed.

Engawa was extremely expensive and also an absolute bargain. The sashimi was a showpiece. It came in a wooden tray with fifteen compartments, and in each compartment was a unique and beautiful pottery dish containing an exquisite morsel of something utterly delicious. It was one of the most wonderful things I've ever seen (and tasted) in a restaurant.. until the Kobe beef turned up. Once again, this was gorgeously presented, and the meat was off-the-charts sensational. I'd never tasted Kobe beef before, and all I can say is: believe the hype. I've never, ever encountered such tender, succulent, juicy and deeply flavoured beef. It was quite simply the steak of a lifetime.

Service was unfailingly friendly and nicely paced but, be warned, Engawa's dining area is narrow and properly tiny, so you may struggle to get a table (or even a stool at the bar) where you are not jostled by other diners. But any minor discomfort is utterly outweighed by the gastonomic delight on offer. It's certainly some of the best - possibly THE best - Japanese food in London. Very warmly recommended indeed.

The foods were good but would expect that for the price I paid. Hot sake and miso soup were serviced just about warm .. I had to ask the sake to be warmed again.
they use huge bowls and plates to look nice but the table is tiny and cheap. The bench and chairs were cheap and uncomfortable. We were squeezed at the corner. Between the each table is so tight. The ambiance was poor and don’t expect that in expensive restaurants.
We were also right by the sliding door which leads to bins where waiters go in and out constantly to get rid of leftover foods.
I booked a table for a very special occasion but unfortunately I will not do that again.
We were only ok because the foods were quite good.
