Fat Buddha has been named as the Best Restaurants in Durham (Restaurant of the Year 2008 & 2009 in the Durham City Retail Awards).
I couldn’t fault the service which was polite and efficient, however, a month ago I ate at The Fat Buddha at Seaburn and ate a meal which was fresh and appeared home cooked with lots of spices. Based on that experience I decided to try out Durham. Unfortunately I can’t say the say about this restaurant. I ordered the same meal, chicken satay followed by green curry. The chicken was of a slimy texture in both dishes and the green curry looked as though it had been emptied out of a tin with a few red peppers added. Little tastes and felt like fast food variety. Couldn’t eat most of it and left very disappointed. Wouldn’t recommend and wouldn’t go back.
The gluten free options were limited & we were surprised/disappointed to be told that all sauces are pre made, so the chef was unable to adapt according to requests!
Birthday celebration and had high expectations for a good night however the restart aunt is closed and we were served our meals in the bar area. How to destroy a special occasion! Absolutely no ambiance and didn't even rate as a pub meal. Such a shame as good was good but not as we expected when we booked. This meal was not cheap and we deserved to be better treat as customers. Wake up fat Buddha
I will travel to Sunderland or Newcastle next time to be treat as a paying customer
Food and service was excellent. We dined at 7pm and were celebrating our first wedding anniversary.
The evening was only spoilt by a family with truly noisy and uncontrolled children. The staff should really learn to cope with these type of people and intervene where and when necessary.
We will be returning but perhaps after 8pm when there will be less chance of unruly children.
The ambiance was terrible, music far too loud and intrusive, we could not have a conversation, even placing our order was difficult due to the loudness. We will not be going again. I thought Fat Bhudda was a decent place to go for a meal with friends but they are trying to compete with local disco bars. We were thoroughly disappointed
Too noisy wasn’t great for a meal out better if with a group of friends getting drunk as seemed to be happening -
After booking the table a week prior we still had to wait 40 minutes for a table to be free but when we were shown upstairs I counted at least 7 empty ones (albeit they were for 4 and there was only 2 of us!). No free prawn crackers - they cost £2.95!!! Our main course was served in what looked like a soup bowl, that gives you an idea of the portion size. Taste wise it was lovely but the overall experience was very poor. After spending nearly £90 on a pre-meal drink, 2 set meals and a bottle of wine we went home and ended up having supper that night! Don't think we'll be returning to the Fat Budha in Durham.
Had not been to Fat Budha for a while so thought we would go back. Overall disappointed as the food was not as good as on previous visits and in our opinion was not good value.
Excellent food, disappointed with service as bill was incorrect by quite a large amount
Very disappointed, left waiting when we arrived, had to ask to order our food after waiting 20 mins, chicken was over cooked and waited 20mins for the bill. Won't be back
Service let the evening down. Asked our waitress 3 times for drinks and she never brought any. She was more interested in talking to a another waitor. Waited over 40 minutes for drinks. Too make matters worse the waitress then proceeded to slag us off for complaining to another table. Shocking service will think long and hard about returning again.
Table wasn't ready when we arrived, then we had to ask for someone to take our drinks order (as we were ignored by staff). We weren't given any menu's then half an hour after we sat down staff asked if someone had taken our food order - explained that we didn't even have any menus! Also, we still hadn't received our drinks yet! We complained to staff - who apologised and said it was because they were busy. A poor excuse for bad customer service.......they said that our first round of drinks were free as an apology. The food was just average and certainly not worth the wait - I won't be returning to Fat Buddah, Durham and would not recommend to anyone.
Plaites were cold to have hot food served to them. Drinks were rediculosly expensive £4 for small bottle poroni plus 10% service charge !!!
Been many to e before this is the worst experience we have had on my 65 birthday of all days .
The occasion was spoilt !!
Food was beautiful and tasty, our waitress was attentive and efficient. The only negative was the gentleman who showed us to our table, he was neither friendly or happy.
Excellent experience. However there is no disabled access to the upstairs restaurant so our friend could not go to this restaurant.
Arrived on time to find our table wasn't ready and it was suggested we go to the bar that was chocca. The DJ was also sending out thumping monotonous music (very loud) Took 10 minutes to get our table but it was so noisy we couldn't hear each other when trying to talk. We were moved (once I'd shouted I couldn't hear anything - nor could the member of staff.)The new table was slightly better. In retrospect I would avoid this restaurant on Fridays and Saturdays if you want to have an occasion where people want to talk to each other. They obviously are trying to maximise their profits by attracting the drinking and dancing clientele.
Food was lovely so was the service etc. Right venue wrong night.
Have wanted to visit for A long while as had good reviews, first impressions were ok, starters of crispy duck and dim sum were very good buts that's where it ended.
My wife's chair was very wobbly so she changed it her self (was noticed by manager and then removed) the drinks had a distinct lack of alcohol (my wife's only being a southern comfort and lemonade), and the mains of crispy honey chicken and chilli king prawns were average with a rice dish for about £17 a dish and I also had so send back my daughter prawns as they were cold my wife's were just warm on the hole it was not a dining experience for A total bill of £103 for 3 (with drinks) was not impressed at all and would not recommended to any one
Our granddaughter enjoyed her end of summertime treat before she starts Secondary School next week.
We booked this restaurant for our tenth wedding anniversary. It was a Sunday evening of the bank holiday weekend. Had we realised the downstairs area would be the equivalent of a nightclub we would have gone elsewhere. Although the food was nice enough, the service was very slow and we were charged for drinks that never actually served. Wouldn't go again.
very disappointed waited over 35 minutes for.main meal after starters were eaten.
when main meal arrived two out of three people could mot eat and far too spicy . one meal was replaced and deducted from bill.
previously had this.meal over 30 times and previously always been delicious
After friends and family recommendations we finally decided to try here for my partners birthday and were definitely NOT disappointed. The service was great, drinks were superb and the food was outstanding. Will definitely be taking another trip here sooner rather than later!!
The food was not correctly spiced, especially the spring rolls which had no flavour at all. The main dish had enough chili in, but none of the more subtle flavours one would expect in this cuisine.
This is not an over exaggeration. We waited over an hour for the starter. When it came, one of the starters was very cold and was sent back.
The low quality restaurant ruined my evening.
Poor service, staff just stood around instead of serving customers. Normally really good
Wonderful staff we had a brilliant time and the food was gorgeous 😘
Service was slow, food took along time to come, food was slightly warm. Partners was virtually cold
Needs a bit of a revamp! Tables and chairs and menus felt grubby.
Decent menu but the food is nowhere as good as it was since the last time I visited.
Nice place and staff were nice but the food was not that good nor very hot the online menu seemed to differ from the actual menu we had in there as well , would we go back ?just don't see any reason to at the moment.
Good food , good service
Lovely food pleasant staff nice ambient restaurant I came for first time at Christmas and brought my fiancé for her birthday
Amazing meal - as per usual. Went for our anniversary, they surprised us with a booth, balloons and a note to celebrate our anniversary. Such an amazing touch!
Food was excellent quality and especially amazing for price of the lunch time menu! Shame about the staff! Not sure of her name but her Attitude was just off!
A lovely place with an excellent lunch menu, and really tasty food.
Having been here many times before was very disappointed on this occasion. Food was good as usual but the service was appalling. First time I can remember not leaving any tip whatsoever. Having been seated it took over 20 minutes for someone to take our drinks order and only because we essentially waved her over. When the bottle of wine was brought to is it was simply dumped onto the table and we opened it ourselves. Then when the mains came we were asked if we would need some plates?! Which was a first too. So once we got plates and a spoon to dish up the rice the food was to the usual Fat Buddha standard. But the service and ambience seem to have gone drastically downhill. The place wasn't busy and I would say half full so it wasn't a case of the serving staff being run off their feet. I think it will take a lot to get us to return when there are so many alternatives in Durham.
Excellent as always would recommend for any meal or occasion
Really nice meal - just a shame the upstairs wasn't open.
Great service, the staff couldn't do enough.
Meals were amazing and good value for money.
Cocktails are not to be missed!
Overall the evening went well. The service was exemplary. All staff were happy and helpful. Disappointed in the chicken and sweet corn soup as it had neither in all five bowls. The duck was beautiful. The main courses were very good except for luke warm steak and asparagus but still edible (certainly didn't sizzle which is usual for a hot plate serving). Honey chilli chicken was lovely though. Desert of white chocolate cheesecake was good but I've had better. Definitely more of a mousse rather than a creamy cheesecake. Sticky toffee pudding was perfect. Definitely the best choice. The seating was great for conversation. Best avoid short skirts or shorts on hot nights as you will stick to the vinyl seats. No back support either which might be an age problem!! Overall the staff make this restaurant. Excellent service. Good food. Great location in the centre of a busy popular social area. Short walking distance to car parking.
Lovely food been many times always nice food. Service was quick and the cocktails are good lots of choice
We came for lunch and to be honest I was quite dissapointed that the dinner menu was not available. However the food was delicious
