Pricing and ambiance is not in keeping with current London standards. Food was not hot when it arrived at the table.
Great service from all the staff and the food quality and presentation were outstanding. We will definitely be going back.
Starters were old/off. That shouldn't happen with seafood anyway but certainly not at high prices. Contacted the restaurant about this but no reply. Mains were great and have had good meals here before so possibly this was an exception.
We had a lovely table by the window. The cocktails were very good & it was unusual to see a wine menu of English wines, the one we chose was very good.
The smoked salmon starters were excellent & tasted totally different from regular shop bought salmon.
We all opted for a nest main course, my beef was delicious.
For dessert my friends all opted for the Express creme brûlée but I had the special of warm chocolate tart with ice cream which was delicious.
Our waitress was very charming & despite the fact that it was not very busy , there was a nice atmosphere.
If you’re unfamiliar with the area, Hackney Wick overground station is only about a 7 minute walk away.

Delicious salmon sharing platter, very good value with good portions and an excellent variety of salmon.
The main courses are generous, succulent salmon steak perfectly cried. The lamb was also excellent.
The Golden syrup desert was a real treat and a fun take on pudding.
You can comfortably share a starter and a desert and still be filled. Cocktails were reasonably priced. Service was prompt and polite. The space feels open with large windows facing onto the canal.
You can look out over the salmon smoker from a gallery window which is interesting.
The food was superb and the restaurant was comfortably busy. Service was good, if the restaurant was located in a more popular area it would be much busier! Great evening enjoyed by my wife and I.
It was interesting to go from the commercial Fish Island street into such a stylish restaurant. The food and service were very good and l was impressed by the wide range of English wines on offer. It was my daughter’s birthday and we were given free glasses of sparkling wine, a nice surprise. Lastly it was easy to park on the street directly outside at no cost.
Wasn’t obvious on the website that they only serve a brunch menu on Saturday. Staff were lacklustre. One of the waitresses dropped cutlery accidentally on the table but didn’t say sorry, despite it almost hitting my guest.
Always a sense of achievement when one finds Formans restaurant. The staff couldn't be more helpful. We went un the stairs to enter then down in the lift after eating. The salmon shared starter was the highlight of the meal. Main courses fine and the relatively expensive British wine well one feels patriotic. It all makes a good evening outing. Then back by uber to Stratford.
The quality of food is extraordinary! Dover Sole was amazing!
We really enjoyed our lunch at Formans. All the meals were very good with an exception of my carrot cake which was a bit dry, hence 4 stars. I also loved the location and the space itself - the restaurant is overlooking the canal and the Olympic Park.
A bit quiet for a Friday night but food and service were superb.

The food quality and presentation was great. The service was a tad inattentive but the staff were courteous and knowledgeable. Our only gripe was that we had a seat for two next to the window and another couple were seated next to us, when the rest of the restaurant was half empty. This did somewhat spoil our dining experience.
We really enjoyed our meal. Food is simple, and well cooked and presented in generous portions. My smoked eel starter (got to have smoked fish at Foraman's) was delicious, and the turbot main also good.
Service was excellent. We liked the resonablu ppriced all British wine list.
Surprised there were so few people on a Saturday night. Definitely the place to take someone for good British food without going for Olde Englishe hype
It started so well with amazing starters, the best smoked salmon I have ever had and my Dad had a fantastic risotto. The staff were friendly but service was not great, took 15min to answer a question about what had cream in and three mains came out but we had to wait for the forth.
My main complaint however is that all the four mains were Really poor and that’s being generous, the fish cake could have come from Iceland!
Deserts not great either, all such a shame after such a good start.
If you go maybe just have a few starters.

The meat on offer was also very well presented.
We will go again when it`s a bit lighter as I think the view over the river and onto the Queen Elizabeth park would be great.
Fairly quiet for Brunch but a lovely table by the window. Great food and lovely beer. Would definitely come back some time. Sarah loved the salmon. I had the sausages and bacon. A very nice lemon cake to finish.
Lovely low key, relaxed lunch. Beautiful fish and meat dishes and great view over the Olympic Park. Really good value for money too and with a history lesson thrown in.
The whole experience was excellent, good good and good service.
My partner and I visited this restaurant on a Saturday evening, for the first time. It was a quiet evening but the atmosphere felt warm and welcoming. We liked the whole experience from food to service and the building is host to a variety of other business including an exhibition space. Though the entrance was a little hidden the discovery was well worth the search.
My friends and I really enjoyed the delicious food and pleasant atmosphere at Forman’s on a special occasion - my birthday. I would certainly recommend the place

Had early dinner with friends before a West Ham game. Pleasantly surprised with the freshness of the cod and the salmon starter was delicious!! Will definitely be going back!

We booked a table at 11am on Saturday for a brunch. It was the only time available because of the west ham game at 3pm..it was early but looking at the brunch menu available online and the reviews on opentable/tripadvisor we decided to go anyway. We arrived at the restaurant at 11am and there were just 4 more people inside. So the ambient was not what we were expecting. We sat at our table and the young waiter who attended us told straight away that we had only one hour for our brunch as everything was booked for the game. We agreed to her however it was not the best way welcome us and to start our meal. However, we thought it was ok for us as the restaurant was empty and food would arrive soon to enjoy the only hour available. We ordered some coffes qnd when we looked at the menu and we found out that it was completely different from all the menus available online. it was a proper food (lunch) menu with just a couple of options that we did not liked for brunch. so we asked the waiter and she told us that the brunch menu was not available and so as we did not wanted the only two options available for the brunch we asked her if it was possible to have some scrumble eggs on toast with salmon. the waiter checked with the chef and when she came back she replied that it was available only what was on the menu!.. well, it was very disappointing! Not olny we woke up early on saturday (as it took us one hour to get there) and the restaurant was empty but the chef refused to cook us two simple scrumble eggs on toasts and salmon..well in the end we decided to try the free range eggs with hollandaise, muffin and salmon.. it was good (the salmon is amazing) but it wasn't what we expexted and the fact that the chef refused to cook us some simple scrumble eggs on toast while the restaurant was pretty empty it was very disappointing...also when we booked nodody informed us that there was only one menu available.. so check what menu is available before to book/go.
The reason I wouldn’t recommend to friends is because I live in Herts and the restaurant is not special enough for the journey. We went there because I was in London at the time but I would not bother again.
Have edited my review after reading that a previous reviewer mentioned Lance Forman's outrageous views on Brexit (have Googled and confirmed). Such a shame. As a staunch remainer I am disappointed that he has chosen this stance, and as such I will be choosing to dine elsewhere. Our Italian waitress was lovely, how awful for her to know her boss has chosen to make her life & that of her countrymen difficult.
This was a London institution and an excellent destination to take visitors to the city. The wine list features mostly UK wines and is reasonably priced (a bottle of Chapel Down non reserve bubbles is around £32). The food has plenty of non-salmon options too, although I recommend the tasting board which has a great selection of various types of cured salmon. Due to it's location it's unlikely to be super busy apart from on West Ham match days.
We could not fault the quality of produce or how the food was cooked or the service. These were all first class.
However, as a returning customer our overall experience this time felt noticeably poorer than previous visits and we felt disappointed. This was because of 4 reasons which we could make comparison to previous visits. We had always enjoyed our previous visits and have encouraged many friends and family to dine here.
The differences this time which we felt made it negative were the following observations:
- No Car Parking (The previous car parking area appears to have been sold off for development)
- The teapots have been withdrawn and replaced with a tea stick in a cup. Irrespective of how long you leave the stick in the cup or stir it these do not produce a strong enough cup of tea and only give you one cup of tea rather than slightly more from a pot. It looked a cheap inferior alternative to previous teapots.
- Whilst presentation was ok, the breakfast was served on only half a muffin, rather than on both halves of a whole muffin. The plate looked half empty and we felt you would need to order two to stand a chance of not still feeling hungry.
- When we arrived for our booking at 11am, we were told we would have to vacate the table after an hour as there was a function on at 12pm. Why was I not notified of this either when I booked or prior to our arrival? I could have changed my booking to 10am or chosen a different day to visit. The experience didn't feel as relaxed as it should have, especially as we were bringing friends to the restaurant for them to experience the food for their first time. We felt overall it was not as impressive for them as our previous visits.
I am sure we will return at some point and give it another try as the salmon is without doubt so exceptional.
First visit to Formans the food and wine were excellent, good selection of English wines and beers, the food was well prepared and excellent. Looking forward to next visit.

We went to Formans having attended the Shrouds of the Somme exhibition and Remembrance Day Service. We arrived as it opened and were given an excellent welcome by the Manager when he unlocked the gate. He showed us in to the building and took us straight to the gallery above the smoking area, explaining all about the factory, restaurant, it’s history etc.
He then showed us in to the restaurant and introduced us to our server. The excellent service continued making us very welcome as the first guests for lunch.
We chose a lovely dry wine (described as being like a dry Chablis, which it was) to accompany the platter of fish which two of us shared and the Ham Hock and Chicken Liver Parfait starter. Both were superb - excellent variety of salmon with distinctive but subtle flavours while both the ham hock and chicken parfait were declared as the best ever tasted.
After such memorable starters could the mains and deserts deliver similar accolades? YES! Whether the Chicken Ballantine, Smoked Haddock fishcake, treacle sponge or espresso creme brûlée - all we’re excellent, with the Ballantine and creme brûlée being the standout picks.
We will be back!

To be fair, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Formans - it was relaxed, great service, lovely food and a really unique setting. On my way to the bathroom, just before leaving, I came across their shrine to Boris Johnson - realistically, that's what I'd call it. It was their media corner about how they are proud supporters of Brexit. A quick look online and I realized that this was correct and not some joke in poor taste. I cannot in good conscience freely give money to a company who have actively campaigned to make their staff, their industry and their country poorer. Bottom line - there are a lot of great restaurants in this fine city. I will pick another and not grace their doors again.
