I go to Fortnum & Mason for tea on the last day of every London business trip. 5 times this year. It is my special place. This was the first time I left wondering if I would return, all because of the service. Food and ambience were great, the service was horrible. My reservation was at 6:30pm. The hostess made it clear that she was not pleased that I was a single seat reservation. I was asked to sit and waited 20 minutes. I finally reminded the hostess I was there and finally seated. I waited just as long doe water and to place my order. At that time, they are not busy but I waited for long lengths at each turn.
I was also charged for sparkling wine even though OpenTable stated included. Staff indicated I would need to speak to Open Table about the cost.
unfortunately we had to wait about 35’
Absolutely first class . Could not praise highly enough. Excellent service, wonderful food and such amazingly kind thoughtful staff.
Have been to many different places in London for afternoon tea and
In comparison this was poor. No Christmas ambience in the dining area. Only one decaffeinated tea which was not good. No tour of the tea and cakes. The service charge and basic price was the most expensive and in comparison to other places this was very over priced. A let down after waiting this long to go.
We had a wonderful birthday celebration afternoon tea. Sadly the promised candles didn’t arrive.
The only other point was I was quoted £50 per person and it cost £60. Not sure why but we thoroughly enjoyed it anyways.
Lovely experience with very nice food. Expensive but you can have more of whatever you want. Our service wasn’t great and we were left for quite a long time at the beginning but overall a good experience
Fantastic setting and incredibly helpful staff, sixth time we have been and have never been disappointed.
The service was outstanding , the food not so good. Sandwiches were acceptable but the scones were dry and very crumbly. The clotted cream came in plastic prepared containers that had been put into a silver dish to look more upmarket. Cakes were average, 5 to share between two of us. Only knew about extra cakes on a trolley as l had read about this in other reviews.
Fantastic afternoon, our every needs where catered for. Well done Fortnum and Masons for a special experience. We will be back
Excellent service food was divine would definitely go again
Superb! Just sit down, enjoy and be pampered. Fantastic experiance. Must repeat it soon.
Fortnum and Mason excels in the glamorous and tasty gourmet food selection. I had the classic tea and my friend had the savoury; both were creative, beautiful and delicious. We both loved it all, the coronation chicken sandwiches especially, also the scones. The tiny pastries were special. One nice thing is that they ask if you would like more of anything, it seems the treats are unlimited. The ambience is elegant and charming, it's a celebratory treat to have tea here. My only wish would be more selection in the non caffeinated teas. Also, while our waitstaff was charming, generous and eager to please, she disappeared for long periods at a time and we had difficulty getting a tea refill, our check and paying. But this is a very small complaint and the positives far outweigh any negatives. I highly recommend this experience to anyone for a special occasion, or just to treat yourself. A delight!
Food quality and choice very good. Sadly the service didn’t live up to standard I would expect eg 2 out of 3 meals arrived and by the time the third arrived the other two were cold (didn’t want to start whilst our friend was still waiting). The cost is relatively high and I think I’d prefer one of the high class hotels where service is better and cost slightly lower.
Wonderful afternoon tea , beautiful setting with attentive staff who were more than welcoming from start to finish
We had a very pleasant experience; we were welcomed and the menu was explained to us.
I would prefer to have one of each type of cake available for each guest, although our waitress encouraged us to order more as require. Cake selection was quite conservative.
We had a second pot of tea each but were not asked if we would like to try a different tea.
The remaining cakes were packed well to take home and we were offered cakes from the trolley in addition.
Thank you for a memorable experience.
Overhyped. I would recommend other places rather than here. The tea and cakes are OK.. But no wow or creativity
Everything perfect. Food excellent and staff very welcoming and attentive to all our wishes, would certainly recommend.
The waitress serving me was very nice and caring. Her service is very good.
The Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon was extremely busy. There were quite a few people standing around waiting to be seated.
However once seated the staff were amazing as was the ambiance. The piano playing was beautiful.
The afternoon tea was lovely and plentiful. We also had a gin cocktail which was delicious.
We would definitely book again.
I was sadly disappointed with Fortnums. They had quite obviously overbooked. There were alot of people waiting to be seated and it was very busy being this time of year and I had to wait an hour before being seated. Had made my booking for 4pm online.
The service and food was good but feel this really wasn't worth the money and the wait and lack of updates while we were waiting put a complete dampner on it.
We enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea. Food was delicious. We had booked but service was a little slow to start with. It was a busy time around the holidays restaurant was a little loud.
Overall a lovely experience with plenty of choice and excellent service. My only criticism is that some of the sandwiches were a little dry and some of the varieties lacked filling . But all very tasty and beautifully presented and served.
We had a wonderful afternoon tea. The food and salon was beautiful and our server was delightful. We would definitely visit again.
It did not start very well as in the “visible” absence of the manager we sat and waited 55 minutes for the afternoon tea. When the person in charge appeared I have reported my concern regarding the waiting time. She acted swiftly - our tea for three appeared immediately. From the. On it was just a delightful afternoon. Great food and ambience. Still the best afternoon tea in London!
My only complaint would be that the ham sandwich had a lot of fat in it, which I left on the plate. Everything out really good and plenty of it.
A must experience for anyone visiting London (or for locals). The tea is pricy, but the staff is so accommodating. We tried a variety of different teas and were asked if we wanted any additional food after we had enjoyed the delicious items. There is a vegetarian option, as well as a savory, which my son licked since he isn't that keen on sweets. Every bite was fabulous. Highly recommend.
Very elegant experience with a high-class feel to everything (food, china, servers, etc.).
The restaurant itself is very nice, luxurious and service was excellent. However, I feel like the afternoon tea set was not worth the cost. It was £60~62 per person and the food that came with the set was not that good and overall it wasn't worth the money.
I love Fortnum’s and buy provisions from them regularly but had never had afternoon tea there. I booked for myself, my son and friend as a treat after we’d been to an exhibition and after doing some Christmas shopping In Fortnum’s, we went excitedly to the fourth floor. We were shown to our seat and waited for almost half an hour before a waiter appeared. Normally you are seated and your chair is pushed in and a stiff linen napkin is placed in your lap. Sadly we were pointed to the table and the waitress left us ti it before a waiter who barely acknowledged us appeared. Three wonky, misshapen cake stands were placed before us ti my surprise. The sandwiches were nice as were the scones but the cakes were awful. Little more than a selection of Iver sweet sweeties - they bore little resemblance to cakes at all. To top it all, the waiter dropped spent tealeaves all over the floor and did nothing to clean them up. We were charged £22.50 as a service charge for what was a substandard tea with little or no service. We paid and left after just over an hour, ti our disappointment. Dalloway Terrace and St Paul’s Cathedral afternoon teas are better value and far superior quality. The Savoy and the Ritz offer a luxury experience that unwound highly recommend, as do Claridges
Best afternoon tea in London
Wonderful ambience for afternoon tea. We had a great table right by the window overlooking Piccadilly. The sandwiches were delicious and they offer you more if you want which we did..... however they took 20 mins to arrive by which time the scones were completely cold. Service was ok but slow. No one told us that cake was available from
Trolley it was only because I’d read about it previously that I knew. Overall was a lovely experience, waitress was friendly and the food was delicious. Pricey but worth it for a special treat.
Our party of six had a spacious table which looked very pretty and festive. The afternoon tea food choices were really good and the choice of teas was amazing. Also enjoyed the very nice champagne. We were looked after fairly well and didn't feel rushed.
Thank you, we really enjoyed our festive afternoon tea at Fortnums.
Another gorgeous afternoon tea at F&M. We chose the "high tea" option this time and added a glass of fizz - I had brill and lobster with a champagne sauce and my friend when for the Welsh rarebit - we both really enjoyed our choices. The scones were warm, fluffy and when covered in cream and lemon curd, absolutely delicious. A beautiful selection of cakes on the top tier, in particular the gingerbread loaf.....yum yum. Plus we both had a slice of the battenburg, mandatory when I have tea here!! Lovely china in which the tea/coffee is served and such a wonderful ambience in the tea salon. Josef, our waiter was also super friendly and helpful.
My favourite venue for afternoon tea and a guilty pleasure in the run up to Christmas as the store is so beautifully decorated.
Would suggest to a friend but would recommend other places
Waiters were knowledgable and very friendly. Attentive but not overbearing. A truly unforgettable and impressive Christmas treat.
Despite arriving on time for a booking we had made 3 months ahead, we had to wait over 20 mins for our table to be ready and another 25 mins for the food, which was excessive given that the choice is between set menus, rather than an à la carte selection. So, the 1 3/4 hrs that we had assumed would be ample turned out to be barely sufficient. This meant that it was not the relaxed treat that it should have been given the hefty price tag, which was not justified on the food alone.
Staff were so lovely, friendly and helpful. The room we were in was quieter than the main rooms which was good. Food delicious we really enjoyed everything. Piano music was good too.
Great food, excellent service exceeded our expectations at every level. Although teh restaurant was busy we never felt that we were being rushed. The kevel of servioce is helped by teh number of waiters and waitresses they have working here - they seem to work really well as a team.
The place is really nice and overall we had a wonderful time.
Things I liked: there’s a good range of teas available to choose and you can get as much as you need. You don’t need to stick to a particular tea, when they bring you a new pot, you can change the flavour.
The scones are absolutely delicious! The sandwiches are also good. They also bring more food if you want to.
Whatever you haven’t finished, you can take in a doggy bag. They also give you a jar of lemon curd and jam as the ones you have during the tea.
The staff were amazing and super helpful.
Cons: some of the crockery we had looked a bit old, worn out, which for a £60 tea, and the fact that F&M also sell their own cups and saucers, these should look like new.
