Obviously the Tea Salon was extremely busy at this time of year so was not the best time to experience quick service. However, our waiter was extremely good, friendly and efficient. For three of us, we ordered one vegan tea (which I was assured was excellent) and 2 afternoon teas. Could not possibly consume the pastries after 2 delicious scones, but our lovely waiter arranged for a "takeaway" box. Next time I think I would order the savoury tea possibly in March when not so, so busy....
Wonderful experience in a quintessentially English setting. Loved the opportunity to sample unlimited pots of tea, and replenish our serving of finger sandwiches. My fiancée and I literally had no room left for the cake trolley by the end! Top grades all around.
I've lost count of how many times I've had afternoon tea at Fortnums, but I think there needs to be a big change made. The service can be hit and miss, the food is becoming a huge miss. The cake selection was absolutely dire this Christmas.
Last tea before leaving London
Same price as a good hotel but way worse in Quality service and atmosphere. Unfortunately not worth it.
Disappointed, having been to Christmas afternoon tea at F&M for the past three years and really enjoyed it, the standard has fallen badly.
The service - although charming - was dire. Twenty minutes after we arrived we had only two glasses of water in front of us. We had to vacate the table in just over an hour which did not make for a relaxing afternoon tea.
Especially when it took 10-15 minutes to get a second pot of tea.
Most of our time was spent trying to catch a waiter’s eye to order or chase our tea.
The High Tea portions were extremely stingy although we were offered replenishment of our two tiny (2” diameter) scones. It hardly seemed worth the trouble trying to get a waiter to bring them.
In the end we took our final cakes home in a box.
No wonder the tea room was 1/3 empty.
An excellent celebration for my partners birthday. and a very sweet touch to sing happy birthday to him and decorate his dessert
We will definatley be returning
A wonderful tea at Fortnum & Mason - perfect end to our Christmas shopping day in London.
Not very welcoming staff and we waited three-quarters of an hour for food to be brought to the table.
Sadly, a disappointing experience.
Beautiful setting excellent service and fine food. Just a tad expensive but great for a special treat. Would definitely go back again.
Starting off, we had to wait almost half an hour from the time of our booking for our table to be ready. They also seated us in a smaller table that normally is not meant for 6 guests. General level of service was very slow, our server was nice though so it somewhat made up for it. Other servers would literally see that we raised our hands and walk past us. Item refills came at a painfully slow speed, the whole place seemed to be run in quite a messy fashion. Sandwiches were fresh but it was mediocre overall for the price, and it brings me to regrettably say that it seems like Fortnum & Mason is no longer the gold standard for afternoon tea that it once was.
My wife and I visited Fortnum and Mason for the high tea, and it was the highlight of our planned trip. However, the experience was really disappointing. The mugs were chipped and dirty, the silverware had water spots on them, and the food left a lot to be desired. All of this for £60 per person makes it one of the worst values in all of London tourism. What an absolute let down. Fortnum & Mason should be the shining star of British culture, not this.
Enjoyable afternoon, lovely surroundings and a very attentive pleasant waiter. Wonderful experience.
For that special treat very enjoyable. Staff very attentive despite been the Salon being very busy two weeks before Christmas
This was a birthday treat for my daughter.
We found the sandwiches were on the verge of going stale and the scones were hard.
It was recommended to us to order one savoury and one sweet tea for more of a mixture which we did. However the savoury was not to our liking.
The service we found to be ok
Would I recommend it. No I wouldn’t. I found the food mediocre and certainly not worth the money I paid.
We have had afternoon tea locally for a fraction of the price but it was superior in ever way.
Perfection! A real treat in every way. Great service.
As always, exquisite quintessential English High Tea.
We celebrated a birthday and it was very very discrete (no happy birthday song, thank Goodness!)
The only issue was that we had to wait for over 15 minutes.
Unless you like dry and cold sandwiches or ultra sweet dessert - spend your 60quid per head elsewhere
This was the second time that I visited the Fortnum and Mason Jubilee Tea Salon. Although in many ways we were happy with the environment and service, something was different - and disappointing - this time as follows:
I was recently diagnosed with Coeliac and requiring a gluten free menu I thought Fortnum and Mason would be the ideal afternoon tea for me.
However the scones were absolutely inedible. I don't know what your recipe is but the flavour and texture was chemical and frankly disgusting. Have the chefs themselves tried to eat the gluten free scones? As someone who bakes a lot myself as a gluten free cook, I am aware that gluten free scones are not only do-able but can be as good as the non gluten free scones when baked correctly with a decent recipe.
I had been warned about Fortnum and Masons scones on social media by another Coeliac person but I wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt and try for myself. I was shocked at how awful they were(and I am pretty easy going about gluten free equivalents normally but I couldn't take more than a mouthful).
Regarding the rest of the afternoon tea, the mini cheesecake and meringue were good, the chocolate fondants pretty good and the tea was nice. The sandwiches were nice but there needed to be more of them. When I ordered an extra helping of sandwiches, the kitchen were not able to provide it and although the waitress apologised a lot and said the extra sandwiches were on their way, they never came and after 45 minutes of having asked, we needed to go.
Please improve your service and scones for gluten free diners. I'd love to return but will only do so when you've changed the scone recipe that you use. Scones are a central part of afternoon tea and unfortunately my experience was ruined by them.
Soooo disappointing. I went for a Christmas afternoon tea at lunchtime with a good friend and although we knew there wasn’t a festive menu, we were a bit disappointed that the room wasn’t more festive. We waited for our server for quite a while after we finished our sandwiches to ask for more tea. Eventually we gave up and started on the scones. She eventually came back and asked us if we wanted more sandwiches! Wish we’d known we could have more before moving onto the next course. Asked for water which I didn’t get...until about 30mins later when I caught another servers eye. £60 for 6 finger sandwiches, 2 scones and a few little cakes is ridiculous. Would never go again or recommend to others.
It was the best afternoon tea experience. Our server was delightful and really helped make our experience the best. We enjoyed it and will go again.
This is still a quintessential London experience. However they seem to be experiencing staff turnover and are predominantly staffed by non native English speakers and those whose exposure to good service seems to be more reminiscent of a communist regime. The food is fantastic and still of a superlative quality and well executed. However the entire experience depends heavily on the server and we have had AMAZING service and also uncaring, shoddy, unfriendly and lackadaisical service. This time was an example of the latter.
The saloon is beautiful, the food is stunning - I would love to come back soon.
Fabulous setting but let down a little bit by service... a 30 minute wait to be seated after our scheduled booking time and difficulty understanding some of the servers. Liked the fact that they bring you more of what you want for no extra charge but we expected better quality cakes than what were offered.
There is no atmosphere in the dining room, other than reception it did not even feel like Christmas. The service was poor, our plates with sandwiches et cetera arrived we waited 10 minutes and had to chase for our pots of tea. The teapots were in plain white pots not even matching the rest of the crockery. The sandwiches were dry on the edges, it took a long time to even request some more. What in all a very disappointing experience and totally overpriced for the food served. Would never go back nor ever recommend it to anyone else.
Too expensive, to much wait, not worth it, but the scones and tea was ok
The food is to die for not often you can replenish any thing when having afternoon but at Fortum & Mason we experienced replenishment of sandwiches and pastries the whole affair was enjoyable.
Absolutely lovely experience and lovely staff— delicious food
Excellent as always we come every year with our three daughters to celebrate birthdays and Christmas. Well done and thank you all!
Very nice but out waitress disappeared in the end so it took quite some time until we were able to pay! The manager was very entertaining 😀
Attended for a friends birthday, had the perfect time and wonderful tea.
Very clean and tidy, attended very well, although we did have to ask for the tea when the sandwiches arrived after a waiting ! It was dealt with and rectified quickly. Staff very friendly and you are looked after well. The entrance was decorated for Christmas which was beautiful. Would recommend the experience.
The food was lovely and our sever was really nice, it was very busy in the restaurant but as it’s the run up to Christmas, that was to be expected.
I expected a much grander experience of afternoon tea in London. I regularly go for afternoon tea in my local area and pay ALOT less than I did here. I was willing to pay more expecting a service unlike I'd had before. I had to ask twice for milk for my tea. I was never offered a 2nd pot and my husband was never offered a top up to his coffee. No additional drinks were offered throughout. The sandwiches had obviously been stood a while before being served as the bread was a dry and a little stale at the edges.
Overall, I left very disappointed at the experience.
Absolutely outstanding food, service and experience.
I go to Fortnum & Mason for tea on the last day of every London business trip. 5 times this year. It is my special place. This was the first time I left wondering if I would return, all because of the service. Food and ambience were great, the service was horrible. My reservation was at 6:30pm. The hostess made it clear that she was not pleased that I was a single seat reservation. I was asked to sit and waited 20 minutes. I finally reminded the hostess I was there and finally seated. I waited just as long doe water and to place my order. At that time, they are not busy but I waited for long lengths at each turn.
I was also charged for sparkling wine even though OpenTable stated included. Staff indicated I would need to speak to Open Table about the cost.
Lovely friendly staff, but I was a bit disappointed in the afternoon cakes on our plate -I am not a fan of chocolate and they seemed to be a lot of it -the cakes on the trolley were lovely though and it was a nice treat to have a free glass of champagne
I love Fortnum and Mason. But their service was terrible, and we received bagged tea. The scones were excellent. Poor service and cold tea not worth $60. They could and should do so much better.
