GAZETTE was originally born in Battersea in 2007 and had a gentle expansion with the opening of the Balham and Putney branches. GAZETTE is described by owners Pascal Even and Walter Lecocq as a rural style of French brasserie, one you’d find in Provincial areas of France.
Both want it to reflect the spirit of local French cafés and offer a cuisine that is simple, generous and vivacious, with lots of daily specials and on-going food events, and where transpires the warmth and cordiality of true French cuisine.
Kitchen closes at 10pm.
We are regular visitors and enjoy the variety of dishes and the pleasant staff and authentic French atmosphere
We visited Gazette on Sunday evening after France had won the World Cup. The remaining customers had clearly been drinking and eating all day and had obviously enjoyed themselves. The staff were also in celebratory mood!!. It wasn’t the greatest experience as the food took too long to arrive, was pretty mediocre and we felt like we had gatecrashed someone’s party. We’ve been several times before and generally had a decent meal. If I’m honest it feels a bit tired and as though it has run its course. I hope not, as in the past it’s been a reliable local restaurant. Back to basics please!
The specials Filet Mignon with squid ink was delicious. However the a la carte Mussels were a disappointment- very dry/rubbery texture with little flavour, as if not fresh. Although, when we gave this feedback to our waiter he did give us our dessert on the house which was a nice gesture. The rest of our meal was lovely especially the juice cocktails!
The muscles deal is great except it comes with the tiniest portion of chips! The wine list is overpriced and doesn’t match the quality of the food. Tried a couple of times over the years but always dissatisfied.
Excellent seasonal menu with great value dishes as well as special items for special events. Staff always helpful and polite
My husband and I ate a delicious brunch here for the first time. Everything was exquisite, from the service to the food. Generous portions and fabulous tastes! We will be back.
Amazing service as usual and great food . Consistently good for lunch or dinner . Always made to feel very welcome and nothing is too much trouble
Lovely as always!! Menu has changed and is a bit less authentic. A lot more Asian influence. Food was lovely but so sad the cheese display wasn't out!
Really not as good as normal. Awful service, sent three separate things back due to mix ups and bad wait service!! Hopefully the staff change is not permanent.
We’ve been going to Gazette since it opened. We’ve been there pre-kids, with kids, with family and even had one big Xmas day there. Yes service can be up and down depending on staffing but the food is consistently good, they make an effort with their seasons and specials and where else can you go and let your kids write all over the tables, trash the place, eat good food and wine and leave with the Manager smiling and thanking you for your visit. Balham is lucky to have a place like this - non pretentious and big enough that you can always get a table somewhere. Should definitely be supported by the locals (especially those who think queuing in the rain on Hildreth Street for smashed avocado is going to guarantee good food)
I went with a friend (who was not local) for Sunday lunch. Service a bit chaotic and the waitress actually forgot my main course!!! Was told that it would be at least 20 mins to prep another burger so I had to put up with a plate of chips for Sunday lunch! Profuse apologies and dessert on the house (mediocre) - therefore couldn’t possibly recommend this to anyone apart from someone that I didn’t like. I have lived in Balham for 25 yrs and eat out fairly regularly - this was terribly embarrassing as I’d booked it and felt responsible for a pretty poor time.
I had brunch here on my birthday with a group of friends - lovely food and great service. Would definitely recommend.
We came here last year for our anniversary and this time for my partner’s birthday and the service and food never disappoints!
It’s also great on a Wednesday as women get a free drink or dessert!
This is my first review, that's how strongly I feel about it
Service - poor. Gum chewing girl forcing menus on us as we were sitting down and food did not arrive at the same time. ipad ordering and billing systems appeared complex and had to be re-typed in more than once
Food not great. Burnt and dry garlic bread. TINY portion of spinach, with raw garlic. Frites (which you have to pay for, like the sauce) served in a saucepan(!). Pommes dauhpinoise had no seasoning, no nutmeg, no cheese, it was just potatoes and cream. Caesar salad drowning in grated cheese. Streaks ok-ish but served only with an oblong of cabbage.
Atmosphere insipid, pop music playing and a tv with football in the corner. This is NOT a brasserie feeling.
For the quality of the food, it is hugely overpriced. Steak frites should be all inclusive, and the veg sides should be bigger than 2 mouthfuls
On the plus side the merlot was palatable. but for some odd reason they took away the wine glasses and brought out bigger ones. I might expect that in La Gavroche, but not a brasserie in balham. A tumbler is fine in a brasserie
I hope they read this as they could get it right reasonably easily. The fact that is was 40% full on Saturday night says it all.
This was an anniversary lunch. We enjoyed a carafe of Pinot Grigio and an excellent meal. The great thing about eating at Gazette is that the menu changes every week and they have daily specials as well.
We'll be back
Great for family especially if you got a black board table !
A fabulous restaurant. Great French cuisine. Perfect for foodies.
Had breakfast with my mum and it was lovely and quiet on a Sunday morning. All specific requests were correct, staff were attentive, everything arrived in good time and food was great.
Love the food and place. Just wish they ditched the wooden boards to serve food as this is not very hygienic. The wooden table was also a bit sticky. Wood and food do not make very good friends. Otherwise very good.
The Gazette Brasserie offers an authentic French brasserie dining experience, and is good value for money too. The restaurant also has a pleasant bar area for snacks and a glass of wine. Recommended.
Fantastic food and great service, we had a lovely evening
Food was OK but came out in dribs and drabs. Vegetables were smothered in oil and tiny portions. Meat was well cooked and tasty. Service was slow and waiters were often chatting at the bar
I don’t normally bother with poor reviews but I was so disappointed by the food here I have to comment. Firstly it wasn’t clear when I made the booking on open table that there was a set menu, I would urge other diners to call ahead and check as it was pricey (45 per person)
My partners starter (crab and avocado salad) had the most unripe avocado I have ever had I’m not sure how they even cut it in the kitchen it was so hard to chew, my main which was duck was over cooked and came with literally two pieces of potato that were undercooked. To be fair my partners cod main was much nicer and the fish was well cooked but 2 out 4 dishes being poor isn’t great esp considering the price.
I really like French food and was excited by their menu but I will not be returning here.
We went on Tuesday night which was when they do their offer on mussels. To be honest the mussels were over cooked, very small and hardly worth the effort. However the tartiflette which we shared to start with was very good.
The special that was on, the tartiflette was disappointing and not worth the money not enough Reblochon cheese! Music was terrible like dance, trance music, staff were having a social around the bar and didn’t seem busy!
Nobody asked us how the food was.
The bill was expensive for what we had.
Would not recommend or return to this branch. Definitely lost it’s French charm and the quality gone down hill shame really as we used to like it there.
Food was lovely. The service was very poor. Had to ask for the table to be cleared and for desert menus and for someone to take our order.
The food was great, but the service not. The restaurant was quiet, yet we had to take the bill up to the counter and when the waitress served our wine, one person's glass was not refreshed, so we had to buy another bottle!
Great lively atmosphere. Food is superb, always, genuine French and delicious. Accommodating for children too.
An excellent Sunday Lunch. Great food and good service. Good wine and a fun atmosphere. I would definately do it again.
Very tired place. And it’s huge so it all seems hugely tired.
One dish in particular was outrageously over priced for what it was.
Chips and steak were good. Everything else was poor really. Virgin Mary wth a dry match stick of celery, fois gras swimming in grease with raw green apples. No love or finesse to be seen alas.
Quite non descriptive house music in the background?
And a sticky table....urgh
Service fine but non-invested staff.
Just a very tired business overall...needs a rebirth. But maybe people keep coming so they don’t in fact.
It was a Monday night and extremely quiet, so the ambience suffered a little.
The service was quick, friendly and very pleasant. We had the chateaubriand, which was very well cooked and tasty. The chips were crispy. Very nice.
I would recommend this for a casual evening rather than a romantic date, but well worth visiting.
Delicious French food. Impeccable service. Great value for money
Usually the food is delicious and you can enjoy it in a nice and relaxing atmosphere
Fabulous food for my birthday family meal.
Great service too
Will definitely be back
Starter: Goats cheese/courgette crottin
Mains: Roast Duck with spinach and straw potatoes
Dessert: Tarte Tatin
We all agreed this birthday lunch was a very enjoyable experience in every way.
We visited Gazette based on a list of the more notable restaurants in Balham, on TripAdvisor. The reviews were a mixed bag, so we didn't have particularly high expectations coming in, however Gazette really impressed us. The staff was very friendly, and the food was really excellent. Given that it's in London, it was also very good value, two in our party had a generous chunk of Swordfish with nicely sautéed vegetables for £16.00, a far cry from the small slice of steak we'd had for the same price at a restaurant just round the corner. The only slight criticism I have is that the decor isn't particularly remarkable, and it's situated on a fairly busy road. Having said that, it's on my list of to-do again, especially for the Chateaubriande Mondays.
Came to Gazette for our 10th anniversary meal and it was outstanding. From service to the food. We arrived late on a Monday and never felt rushed to finish. The staff were attentive and the food was delicious. I had the chicken liver parfait followed by the steak tartar and my boyfriend had the ham hock followed by the fillet steak. All were fantastic. Can not recommend enough.
I had a pleasant evening at Gazette in Balham. As French I don't go to French restaurant in London to avoid the disappointment that I had in some french restaurant in London. Well, this restaurant is really good, with excellent food. I definitely recommend it! And the Nutella soufflé is divine!
Enjoyed celebrating my son’s 17th with friends and family. Incredibly good value for this French cuisine made right here in the kitchen - such delightful food and staff and a refreshing change from the chains you get everywhere else in London.
Excellent service at a busy time. Delicious food. Lovely evening!
