I was a little underwhelmed by the food, service and price.
Food was fine, if overpriced for what it was, but I suppose you’re paying for the convenience of location too. The service was very subtle by which I mean inattentive, though friendly when staff eventually noticed we were looking.
As always, a great dinner! Beautiful building, good service, delicious traditional flavours and excellent value for money!
We had a very pleasant dinner. It is on the pricey side which stopped us from having starters as the main courses are not cheap. The food is tasty though and portions are generous.
Nice setting but the food was a total disappointment. We had a sausage dish which only came with a not very good pretzel and some mustard. We had to order vegetables. We also had a dish of pork shank which was nice but not exciting! Our expectations were too high for this type of food. Staff were lovely and provided a lovely piece of cheesecake for the birthday boy!
Es incomprensible que no haya luz suficiente para poder leer la carta,es importante el ambiente pero más importante es la practicidad
Not sure what’s going on at the GG, but this was my 5th or 6th visit and, sadly, the quality of the food seems to have taken a serious nosedive. As always, it all sounded interesting on the menu, and ought to have been tasty, but it was bland and just not enjoyable. It was rescued somewhat by the salt shaker. Also, we had a GG special cocktail that claimed to have added CO2, which one assumes would result in a fizzy drink, yet it was flat as a saucer.
Finally, I’m not sure what’s up with the new Alpine-themed uniforms for the staff - the effect has been to cheapen what was a fairly upscale dining experience. I guess these factors combined explain why I was able to book a table for Saturday evening with very little notice. Am hoping this is a blip and the old GG will come back.
Food was good and service was good
An enjoyable evening
Very buzzy but acoustics good so you could hear eachother easily. Excellent food with good choices. Service was prompt but not too quick. All in all an great dinner and evening.
Wonderful ambience, coupled with great vegetarian menu - very thoughtful.
Yum finally a new day a new country and a new cuisine! Mmm Mmm.
Fantastic food, amazing service and lovely vibe!
Service was really Good and very fast. Lovely ambiance and perfect location for my friends and I. Had a delicious cocktail. My meal was a little pricey for the amount of food but it is central london and it was tasty.
The food was nice. All four of us enjoyed our options. But the service was very slow even tho the restaurant wasn’t full. The tables are also a bit cramped with the space between heavily travelled. My chair was knocked into a few times by waiters despite being pulled in as far as I could manage.
I don't see how the German Gynasium gets such good reviews. There was no tablecloth and the table was grubby. I don't always expect tablecloths but I do expect a clean table. The service was slow, we had to ask for more water to be provided when ours had run out. Our wine was only topped up once. The food was at best mediocre, a very expensive sausage that could have come from a street food caravan. The cafe was very noisy. I have eaten in many D&D restaurants and cafés and been very happy but I will not be going back to this one.
The restaurant, food and cocktails were lovely, but we were really rushed off our table, despite being under the two hours advertised that they reserve it for. My friend was halfway through her dessert and they were trying to make us leave!
But the food was good and it’s beautiful in there. I’d give it another go.
First time in GG. Lovely space. Good food but not sensational.
I've walked past it many times but thankfully I decided to give it a try. I was certainly not disappointed. Service was impeccable and the ambiance was so chilling. I loved the menu and had a delicious Vienna Schnitzel, in fact all three of us enjoyed our food. A special place that I will return to again.
Tasty, generous and fast. Fantastic choice and very friendly service. Can’t wait to go back and try something else
Read that this is “the most beautiful restaurant in the world”. That’s not true, but it is a lovely, well decorated & unique location. Service was excellent. The food was very good, but not top-notch.
Lovely venue for a family reunion, with a handy location for the person who had a Eurostar to catch! Food was very good, although elderly father a little disappointed by his squid starter. We didn't have desserts as we were too full. The music was a little loud for my father, at one point he was covering his ears.
First time and enjoyed the food ,service and decor. Would recommend and will be returning soon.
Excellent food and service in a beautiful space, but a bit crowded with high noise levels.
Superb venue and service. Food was delicious. Our waitress Carina was attentive without being over bearing. Highly recommended.
German Gymnasium is the place to go for your fix of bratwurst (or other) in London. Great cocktails, service comfort food.
Lovey lunch. Food was great. Service was brilliant. Will go again
The cafe is a really nice place to go before going out drinks or a low key lunch/dinner. Really enjoyed the chicken burger. Wouldn’t recommend cafe for birthdays as menu is quite limited.
Four of us are in the Grand Cafe. We really enjoyed it. Our waiter Tommas was excellent: friendly and efficient with really good recommendations s. Cocktails were good, Romanian wine was good. Food was good: burgers were massive, chips good, sausage was good and schnitzel was good. We were all full. The setting is a unique historical building that conjures a sense of occasion and atmosphere. Try it
Great service and atmosphere. Come here a lot as never disappoints but this time my food wasn’t as good as normal. Not sure if I was just lucky but I ordered the schnitzel and is was a bit dry. Anyways it’s all good, we had a nice evening overall. Thank you.
Fantastic brunch and wonderful service. Will be back soon!
Great busy bustling venue where you can hear yourself speak . Very good schnitzel and sausage. Left field wine list which helps you experiment with good advice from staff. Lovely on tap food. Glorious cakes/sweets. The cheesecake is specially.
Prefer the cafe to the restaurant
A beautiful place to have dinner in the King's Cross area.
I usually give German Gymnasium a high score due to their consistently great service and attention to detail - a high number of reviews since they opened.
However, on this occasion our main waiter (dressed in one of their managerial grey suits - a new face perhaps) unfortunately did not measure up to normal standards.
- did not ask how our food was
- did not wipe our dirty table (sorry) before putting down the dessert cutlery.
- as a gold Member we usually get a cheeky treat. This is the first time this did not turn up.
It’s usually these details that make this restaurant stand out from others.
We were also serviced a much smaller piece of their famous apple strudel than usual which was disappointing - especially for the price.
Great staff, good food, bit expensive
Food good, noise intolerable. We had previously eaten there at lunchtime when the noise level was low and came back in the evening believing it would be equally low, but we were unable to have a conversation with our friend whom we see only seldom. So, a problem.
If you are looking for good service and a nice atmosphere it's worth a visit.
It’s an attractive chic and airy environment very close to the stations. The food and service are great. Would definitely recommend it.
Ours was a very early dinner, as we were going to a show nearby. Our order was delivered with a smile, efficiently. We did not need to rush. The food was very good. The drinks(sparkling German wine and a beer) were excellent. The Cafe seems to be very managed well and it has pride in its food. We will be back
A nice choice on the menu. Food very tasty and cooked well.
