German Gymnasium Grand Cafe
Also offering two bar areas on a first come first serve basis.
I don't see how the German Gynasium gets such good reviews. There was no tablecloth and the table was grubby. I don't always expect tablecloths but I do expect a clean table. The service was slow, we had to ask for more water to be provided when ours had run out. Our wine was only topped up once. The food was at best mediocre, a very expensive sausage that could have come from a street food caravan. The cafe was very noisy. I have eaten in many D&D restaurants and cafés and been very happy but I will not be going back to this one.
The restaurant, food and cocktails were lovely, but we were really rushed off our table, despite being under the two hours advertised that they reserve it for. My friend was halfway through her dessert and they were trying to make us leave!
But the food was good and it’s beautiful in there. I’d give it another go.
First time in GG. Lovely space. Good food but not sensational.
I've walked past it many times but thankfully I decided to give it a try. I was certainly not disappointed. Service was impeccable and the ambiance was so chilling. I loved the menu and had a delicious Vienna Schnitzel, in fact all three of us enjoyed our food. A special place that I will return to again.
Tasty, generous and fast. Fantastic choice and very friendly service. Can’t wait to go back and try something else
Read that this is “the most beautiful restaurant in the world”. That’s not true, but it is a lovely, well decorated & unique location. Service was excellent. The food was very good, but not top-notch.
Lovely venue for a family reunion, with a handy location for the person who had a Eurostar to catch! Food was very good, although elderly father a little disappointed by his squid starter. We didn't have desserts as we were too full. The music was a little loud for my father, at one point he was covering his ears.
First time and enjoyed the food ,service and decor. Would recommend and will be returning soon.
Excellent food and service in a beautiful space, but a bit crowded with high noise levels.
Superb venue and service. Food was delicious. Our waitress Carina was attentive without being over bearing. Highly recommended.
German Gymnasium is the place to go for your fix of bratwurst (or other) in London. Great cocktails, service comfort food.
Lovey lunch. Food was great. Service was brilliant. Will go again
The cafe is a really nice place to go before going out drinks or a low key lunch/dinner. Really enjoyed the chicken burger. Wouldn’t recommend cafe for birthdays as menu is quite limited.
Great service and atmosphere. Come here a lot as never disappoints but this time my food wasn’t as good as normal. Not sure if I was just lucky but I ordered the schnitzel and is was a bit dry. Anyways it’s all good, we had a nice evening overall. Thank you.
Fantastic brunch and wonderful service. Will be back soon!
Great busy bustling venue where you can hear yourself speak . Very good schnitzel and sausage. Left field wine list which helps you experiment with good advice from staff. Lovely on tap food. Glorious cakes/sweets. The cheesecake is specially.
Prefer the cafe to the restaurant
A beautiful place to have dinner in the King's Cross area.
I usually give German Gymnasium a high score due to their consistently great service and attention to detail - a high number of reviews since they opened.
However, on this occasion our main waiter (dressed in one of their managerial grey suits - a new face perhaps) unfortunately did not measure up to normal standards.
- did not ask how our food was
- did not wipe our dirty table (sorry) before putting down the dessert cutlery.
- as a gold Member we usually get a cheeky treat. This is the first time this did not turn up.
It’s usually these details that make this restaurant stand out from others.
We were also serviced a much smaller piece of their famous apple strudel than usual which was disappointing - especially for the price.
Great staff, good food, bit expensive
Food good, noise intolerable. We had previously eaten there at lunchtime when the noise level was low and came back in the evening believing it would be equally low, but we were unable to have a conversation with our friend whom we see only seldom. So, a problem.
If you are looking for good service and a nice atmosphere it's worth a visit.
It’s an attractive chic and airy environment very close to the stations. The food and service are great. Would definitely recommend it.
Ours was a very early dinner, as we were going to a show nearby. Our order was delivered with a smile, efficiently. We did not need to rush. The food was very good. The drinks(sparkling German wine and a beer) were excellent. The Cafe seems to be very managed well and it has pride in its food. We will be back
A nice choice on the menu. Food very tasty and cooked well.
Had a lovely lunch at German Gymnasium, nice food, quite loud but not over the top, everyone was very polite and smiley. I would go back.
Beautiful food and lovely service too!
Applied for the 2 courses for 25 on the app. There was a brief issue with us being sat in the wrong part of the restaurant. In the end it was all sorted
Great food! Loved the cocktails. The prawns were outstanding and great sausage as well! Can’t wait to come back. My friends loved it!
Excellent food and lovely atmosphere to meet the family on. Saturday morning. Beautiful building and a guaranteed nice time here.
Always a great place to meet up with friends. Great food service and Ambiance!
Busy lively interesting and good service
Good expensive for us Yorkshire people
Felt like a treat
Would go again
The food, service & presentation were all delightful. My only issue was the acoustics of the venue which made conversation difficult. The setting felt like a treat though as it looks so stylish.
The food wasn't that great. I have given it a 3/5. I am guessing you have a new chef?
Very average over-priced food. Extra charge for condiment feels a bit of a ripoff. Have had better experience before.
Birthday it was nice very good service
We went to German Gymnasium Grand Cafe to celebrate the birthday of a friend. It was a group of seven and we had an incredible time. The food was remarkable and the bill reasonable, what else could we ask for? The service was superb, as usual. This remains my favourite spot in London.
Was perfect place to celebrate my acquisition of German passport - in anticipation of Brexit. Great wine (chose a Slovenian bottle) and buzz, but eating in the company of a german, we were less impressed re the food.
Fabulous food, great service and vibe. A big hit for everyone!
great for casual business meetings - definitely recommended
Continues to deliver ‘OK’ food in a beautiful room with a great atmosphere.
Overpriced for what it is, but well worth a visit if you haven’t been before
