Great venue and good food. Modern German with a twist, really interesting variations of traditional German recipes.
Great ambience, excellent service by all staff and a great steak.
A wonderful experience in a really lovely restaurant with a fantastic atmosphere. The staff were helpful without being over-present, and the food was delicious.
This was my first visit to German Gymnasium, part of the D&D Group of restaurants in the heart of the "new" King's Cross development area, literally opposite the tube station (so easy to get to). A group of us went along to celebrate a birthday in this interesting historical building, which has been turned into a great restaurant space. The staff were very welcoming and attentive, as soon as you walked in the relaxed and friendly vibe was tangible. We had the set menu offer (some had the 'unlimited bubbles' offer too which was good) which had a good selection of dishes, some german favourites like wurst, sauerkraut, etc but also plenty of other less specialised options. Food was delicious, beautifully presented without a long wait (I had salmon tartare, Icelandic cod followed by a delicious Apple Strudel). Waiting staff brought a "Happy Birthday" dessert plate too which was fun and kind of them. Would definitely recommend and will be paying a return visit.
I've been 3 times recently and have enjoyed each visit. For a German restaurant I'd like more sausage choice, but other than that I cannot complain.
Freindly staff, lovely & relaxed , good menu, reasonalbe prices
It was a special occasion, (my partner's birthday) I've been here many times and had another great time tonight. Very appreciative to our French waitress who made the special very evening and included a little cake.
Asked if they were serving the burger tonight and the waitress said ‘absolutely not’. Well sorry for asking. In short, a great location, ok food, slightly strange staff. Will keep going for the location and amazing interiors though!
This is a highly efficient and stylish operation. Not cheap but good value. The food, though fairly simple, was unusual for London, well prepared and arrived promptly, even though the restaurant, on a rainy Wednesday, was very busy. A vegetable dish which we had ordered did not arrive with the meal, but did immediately following a reminder and the cost deleted from the bll without our having to ask. Thr restaurant does not, and does not purport to, offer haute cuisine but it provides a very enjoyable evening out and I thoroughly recommend it.
Very good food service excellent
Bit expensive but good venue
Great venue, service genuinely friendly, food beautifully presented and delicious.
Waiting staff were rude several times and food average for the money.
Have contacted them directly with my feedback
It was perfect. Good service quick and professional. The food was good. The place is really beautiful. I recommend 100% this restaurant.
Overall a nice experience. Food & Drinks were ok, Service was fairly attentive but brought our starter and main at the same time. Little loud.
My girlfriends and I had a lovely lunch, none of us had been to your restaurant before and we were all very impressed with every aspect thank you.
Great night out! The place has a real buzz and is in a great central location near to public transport. Fairly expensive though.
Great food and service
Great brunch with friends. Bottomless bubbles.... never had to ask for glass to be filled. Waitress was amazing, perfect service
Food was good but not outstanding. Most came lukewarm.
Unbeatable service, delicious food and perfect ambiance for a Friday night birthday meal for 2
Great venue for dinner - always really good food. Not ideal if you want a quiet catch up - but the ambience is great
Interesting alternative to usual international cuisine made a nice change. Food and service were just right for a business dinner with a lively atmosphere - I'd be happy to go back and to recommended it
Great experience apart from the manager taking my wine away when I wasn’t yet finished as they wanted the table back, even though they had told us we still had 20 minutes which wasn’t particularly impressive!
Great service from all staff. Great wine suggestions from Som. Much quieter than main floor. Great schnitzel!! Will recommend and go back.
Fantastic Mother’s Day lunch. I was a little concerned when I saw that it was a set menu but the choices were great. Every course was well executed and generous in size. Lovely wines and an interesting cocktail menu. Our waitress was delightful. Will definitely go back.
I loved it here. This was recommended to me by two individual friends and they were right! What an amazing place and the food is superb!
Took my aunt for Mother’s Day the service was amazing and the bottomless prosecco is really bottomless
Went to the restaurant on a week day evening to celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday. We were a table of 6 and were really well looked after. The service is attentive and knowledgable. The only minus was the waiting time between the dishes but it was really worth it.
Will recommend this place to my friends
Food very good, quite lively with vibrant atmosphere excellent wine choice
The German Gymnasium is in the first purpose-built gymnasium in London, financed by the local German community - hence its name! It is a very impressive space. The menu is "Mittel-European" with a definite German influence but a lot of Britain as well. The prices are reasonable - not cheap, not crazy. I had the "Butchers Plate" which had a slice of very good ham, one good spinach bratwurst and two small smoked ribs which were OK, but nothing special (and they didn't take the membrane off the back of the ribs before smoking them - a slight bugbear of mine). It came with good sauerkraut - mild, but flavourful - and a potato dumpling that reminded me more of heavy grits than the dumplings I have had in Germany. Overall, it was good. The side of cucumber, dill and sour cream was a nice, refreshing accompaniment. My husband had the set menu with salmon tartare - a good sized portion - and currywurst with triple cooked chips. The currywurst tasted to me like barbeque sauce with some curry powder. It was good enough. The chips were very good. We split a dish of three sorbets: green apple, blood orange and yoghurt. They were all good, though the green apple was more like slightly frozen sweetish applesauce than the tart, smooth sorbet that I expected. The wines by the glass give a wide variety of interesting grapes and range in price from about £10-12 for most. Lunch cost us £117 with the ubiquitous "service charge". Overall, a good lunch, not cheap, but fairly reasonable for London.
Beautiful space, but food needs work, generally over seasoned. Over priced menu.
A fantastic restaurant just round the corner from Kings Cross Station. Chose between the bar, downstairs more informal dining or formal on the first floor. The food is excellent, everything is freshly made and tastes delicious. The wine and beers are great too. We liked it so much we ate here twice over the weekend!
Fabulous food. Outstanding service. To be repeated.
Fantastic food as always, thank you for working be recommendations
