German cuisine is definitely not the most sophisticated on, however the dishes has a nice twist.
I found the food to be slightly too salty for my taste, but overall it was tasty.
The restaurant is beautiful, the atmosphere was nice and the service just perfect.
Food good quality and large portions. But a little heavy for the modern day? If that’s what yu’re Looking for, book. But if some of your party might want something lighter, look elsewhere. This menu is pretty hardcore! The name says it all!
Cavernous and noisy. Classy and efficient. A bit impersonal.
A great place to catch up with friends over at Ady dinner
Great service too
The food was amazing. We ate from the set menu and it was delicious and plentiful. The Waiter who served us was engaging and funny.
We had a fantastic anniversary meal here on Thursday night. Everything was first class but the best thing about this is the German Red wine selection which is absolutely first class and rare.
First time here on a Saturday night and was louder than usual but to be expected. Really like this place, especially on Sundays and midweek evenings when it's a little less busy.
Being part of the D&D group you know you are going to get a great looking restaurant with a decent standard of food and the German Gymnasium doesn't disappoint. The décor is classy and almost harks back to the 1950s flapper scene with gold metallic trim and geometric patterns scattered about the place. The wonderful high ceiling and wooden beams give the place a grand aura that befits the modern fine dining cuisine on offer.
The food itself is well flavoured, well presented and sets itself apart by concentrating on more traditional german comfort food. The schnitzel and wurstsalat were great and cooked well. Having had these dishes in Berlin, Germany, I was afraid that if not done properly some meals can often be too salty or heavy however this was not the case at German Gymnasium. We dined on the Evening Standard set menu and were happy to see the table next to us that ordered from the a la carte menu received the same portion sizes as us when ordering the same dishes. If you are dining here it is therefore well worth looking at their 2 course and 3 course offerings, the menu otherwise can be a bit pricey. The desserts are also well presented and tasty without being too sweet (we ordered the apple strudel and selection of sorbets).
The staff throughout were wonderful and that is the highlight of our visit. From the greeting at reception through to our waiter (who served us throughout the night, it's the personal touch that really set this place apart) the service was impeccable. I had made a brief note when booking on Opentable that it was our anniversary and had completely forgotten I had done so, however the staff had also brought out a special dessert (off menu - a lovely raspberry mousse with rum soaked chocolate cake base - divine) to celebrate this fact.
This place is fantastic for group bookings as you will probably get a booth area but is also great for catch ups as well as more intimate meals.
I took my daughter to the German Gymnasium Restaurant for her birthday lunch. The staff were attentive, professional and friendly. The food was superb and the lunch time menu is varied and good value for money. As it was my daughters birthday they gave her a cake with candle and Happy Birthday written on the plate, as simple but special touch. I would definitely recommend the German Gymnasium Restaurant aa a great place for a special meal.
Love coming here for excellent food, a great wine list, a friendly and attentive service and ambience. Never disappoints!
Food was tasty. We were offered a special wine list (they sell at retail price on Mondays!) unfortunately the one we wanted was not available so ended up having a more expensive one (not sure if that was a trick). Our waitress was very nice when we arrived but then completely forgot about us, took us a while to order, get the check and pay. The place itself is worth the visit, really interesting. Cocktails menu looked interesting but expensive, starting from £12. Set menu for dinner was £25 for 2 courses.
The service was outstanding with special treats for our anniversary! Highly recommended!
Good atmosphere, convenient to meet somewhere close to the Eurostar
Everything was amazing per usual!
Beautiful architecture, great food. Excellent for conversation.
Loved my evening here! It was expensive but great for a special occasion, definitely recommend if you’re going for a one off! Food was amazing too.
A fun and buzzing spot. The butchers plate wasn’t great which was a shame but the rest of the meal was good
Outstanding experience. Sat upstairs and ambience was just right - food delicious, service excellent. Only glitch was a rubber band in my fish! But they resolve the situation very well. I'll definitely be back - suggest you sit upstairs if you want less noisy / buzzy.
Flawless restaurant. Obviously favourite of many so is not quiet, which is not bad, it is relaxed and enjoyable. I would go there again and again but want to try other places and many remind ne how good is German Gymnasium. Very friendly and professional staff, busy but not losing a smile.
Extremely high temperatures on the upper floor making the dining experience unpleasant.
To be honest I was very disappointed. My starter was overcooked, my main was mis-described and was also overcooked, by desert wasn't fresh.
The cocktails were excellent and the staff friendly.
the air-conditioning was inadequate.
I was really looking forward to my first visit but won't be returning for dinner
The service and the ambiance was outstanding the food was ok I had the veal but found it a bit dry as not enough sauce with dish the cocktails are lovely but very expensive overall it was a lovely evening the staff are brilliant x
German Gymasium was great.
Good location, great food, fantastic service
An outstanding experience, and one long anticipated, I was glad to finally sample the delights that German Gymnasium offer. Our mission was a simple one: Consume an entire Tomahawk, leaving no leftovers, nor dignity. We succeeded on both front. The food was sublime, but the service was better. We were very well attended to by a number of waiting staff, most notably Dominique and her French boss Eddie (?). Thoroughly enjoyed the steak, and the side dish, although it was unusual to find anything other than tenderstem broccoli in a restaurant these days! Almost made plain old-fashioned broccoli a novelty, and the chilli and almonds set it off nicely.
Very enjoyable, excellent service, superb food and quality wine. I will return!
Excellent food. Very pleased by the entire experience. Will definitely go back (soon!). Service was good, except that they forgot about us on a couple of occasions.
The food was good, but it was the service that sets this restaurant apart from others in the area
Services and Food was great especially the coconut icecream. The butcher feast were huge to finished.
But the seating was very tight even hard to stretch the legs, my friends and i felt very hot for the whole dinner.
Great place for a special lunch or dinner, ambiance lovely ,staff and service very good.
I use this venue a lot for fun and lots and lots of business meetings - food and staff are great, a credit to the team and management of the business - best of all its location and it's consistent.
Brilliant service and atmosphere!
We had a fabulous evening thanks to your fabulous service and great food and drinks. We stayed for 6 hours and your staff were very accommodating, friendly and patient. It was the perfect venue and ambience for the occasion, 8 friends and ex colleague who hadn’t seen each other in a few years.
Beautifully appointed restaurant with flowers with 2 floors and outside patio . Fabulous service and great special tasting menu ( white asparagus). Upstairs was ideal dining for more privacy
Our waiter was exceptional. He was highly professional warm, discreet and attentive . He knew his wines and made an excellent choice for us. He was there when we needed him and not when we didn't.
The restaurant itself looks fabulous and the location is brilliant. The food is delicious but it isn't cheap. My two friends and I had one main course and one gin and tonic each, plus one extra glass of wine for my friend and it came to over £130. It felt a little bit steep for what we'd eaten, I was still hungry when I got home! The staff were very friendly but didn't always listen to what we were asking properly. I asked for a single gin and slimline tonic as I'm dieting and was given a double with full fat tonic. Not the end of the world, but annoying and unnecessary. The waitress also popped up a few times to check how things were and top up our water, when we were having quite a personal conversation and it felt a bit awkward. In hindsight I don't think it was the right venue for my friends and myself to choose for a midweek catch up, but it would be perfect for a special occasion or group meet up... so long as you don't mind splashing a bit of cash!
lovely atmosphere , menu limited unless you like asparagus as it was the season when we visited
We had a lovely evening, the staff were helpful. 2 hours is not enough time for a leisurely supper with friends.
Went for a business meal. Interior is beautiful, food and presentation was good as well. Attentive services.
Food was delicious especially the watermelon starter. Would recommend for business lunch and drinks.
Lively place and good friendly service from the waitress. Food is good. But can be better for the price they charged. I guess we paid for the 'location' and a interesting building....
The Riesling recommendation from the sommelier was good and as it was the cheapest and yet still full of flavour. Well done for not pushing the expensive ones....
