Gilbey's Old Amersham
Having successfully created the first Gilbey’s in Eton in 1975, we acquired what was then the celebrated old tea shop (The Willow Tree) in 1989. After extensive alterations on the history-steeped listed building, Gilbey’s was established, boasting a stylish yet intimate restaurant, a stunning first-floor private dining room and an attractive garden.
Our team is dedicated to delivering the very best quality and value to our customers and assure you of a very warm welcome at Gilbey’s Old Amersham.
Superb, as always. Set lunch menu is always excellent. Very good on gluten free options too
We've been going to Gilbey's in Old Amersham for over 10 years now, once or twice a year for anniversaries or birthdays, and we've never been disappointed. Consistently good quality and value, served by a team who care about your dining experience.
We had a lovely meal, the food was delicious. We will be back.
I have visited Gilbey's many times and been delighted with my meal but last Friday I was not.
I started with the rice ball which was tasteless. I followed with Plaice supposedly served with pickled vegetables and potatoes.
The vegetables were definitely not pickled and the beans were burnt black to an extent that I could not believe that any self respecting chef could plate them up and serve them. They took them back and then when the plate came back the beans were very very undercooked.
I will return as I feel that it was a one off, but Gilbey's really need to be more careful, they are not cheap and such occurrences should not happen.
Very attentive staff.
Meal perfect, took my 83 year old Mum, staff were lovely. Good choice of wines. Would recommend.
Our 4th time here and 1st for Sunday lunch which was delicious. It’s a pleasure to come here it’s a charming with a lovely ambience and even better delicious food.
Romantic meal for two, so hoping the restaurant would not be too busy. It wasn’t, but this does not reflect on our experiences which was excellent. Friendly, prompt, attentive but not intrusive service. Quality of food ( 1 starter, 2 mains, 1 dessert) was outstanding, the stand out being the Bakewell tart, which we fought over,
Only very minor quibble, was the waitress sitting us in an end booth with two 2 person tables next to another couple, when the rest of the restaurant was only half full. Having another couple enjoying an intimate dinner à deux right next to you in a private space would have been a little weird. We were however promptly moved to another table, with no fuss.
Overall an excellent experience. Will be back.
Having not eaten at Gilbey's for 20 years, I was pleasantly surprised by the menu and food we ate for lunch. Delicious and tasty, fresh and priced accordingly.
The resturant was very busy for a Wednesday lunchtime, what's also good to see is a resturant that keeps its decor and bathrooms up to standard.
I will most certainly be returning before the next 20 years whizz by.
Great restaurant with excellent choice and great value.
We had an excellent dinner, celebrating my wife's birthday. Each course was delicious, the atmosphere was relaxing and the staff were friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Altogether, a really positive experience.
This is a lovely restaurant and the food was really good if a little pricey but worth it. I had read that service was slow but would say the opposite a little rushed but we asked for extra time to make our minds up. Will definitely return
Lovely old building but very bland disappointing food. They also knew it was a birthday dinner & nothing was mentioned throughout.
Asked for medium rare steak and a medium rare lamb. The lamb was laughingly small and I was offered another piece. But both steak and lamb were well done. No excuse at 7.30 and only six other diners. We then had to wait for new meals to be cooked.
Our main courses were not charged after I complained when paying the bill but our wedding anniversary was effectively ruined. This is the second time in a row that medium rare was over cooked. We will not go again.
Whilst the food and service were very good it did feel that we were trapped in an early ‘90’s time warp, there were very few customers for a Thursday evening, this didn’t help much either.
We had a perfect anniversary evening drinking lovely wine and eating delicious food, with perfect service in a beautiful old building.
A perfect place to spend our wedding anniversary... excellent friendly and attentive service, perfect good and betty very good wines. Thanks
Nice meal and lovely food but a very small restaurant. Staff were a little slow once things got busy. We had to flag the servers down twice to get the bill.
Friendly staff, excellent food & nice atmosphere- we sat outside as hottest day of year. Only big negative was exceptionally slow arrival of starter & main course which we commented on. I guess maybe everyone was suffering as a result of v hot weather.
Lovely uncrushed and relaxed Sunday lunch with friends. Excellent food and convivial service.
Wonderful restaurant in Old Amersham - have been here a number of times and never been disappointed with the food or service. Need I say more?
A lovely relaxing lunch in the courtyard. Delicious food, excellent, very friendly service. Would highly recommend and we’ll definitely be back!
Sunday lunch. Consistently good.
We three ladies sat in the quaint inner courtyard under the willow tree on a sunny Saturday! The food was delicious and the service outstanding and warm! Everything was catered to our needs and wishes. We enjoyed our lunch so very much!
Excellent dinner with friends at the refurbished Gilbeys Amersham. The room was comfortable and service friendly and helpful. The food was delicious, particularly the plaice with Parmesan crust. Desserts were excellent. Fantastic lemon tart. Wines were well priced. Excellent choice of non-alcoholic drinks for designated drivers e.g. choice of Seedlip ‘gin’. The only down note was a fellow diner engaging in lengthy FaceTime with family very loudly during the meal.
My wife & I have been having occasional mid week lunches at this place for many years & it has never disappointed. I don’t know where they get their staff from & we have seen quite a few over the years but they are consistently excellent. Polite, friendly but not in your face and always available when needed. The menu changes regularly and whilst over the years you see some regular favourite dishes there are always a range of interesting & inventive dishes which quite often knock your socks off!
Gilbeys has always been one of our go to restaurants, however this time we feel something had changed . Maybe a change of staff , and the menu which is usually good value felt over priced for the portion size . Shame maybe it was just an off night
Lunch at Gilbeys never disappoints. They seem to manage a lovely menu, with portion sizes that don’t overwhelm on a summers day. Sitting outside is a real treat
Gilbey's did not disappoint after a long overdue return.
Excellent meal, and very good value. Will certainly be back
Our second visit to Gilbey’s in Amersham for our Anniversary and not disappointed. The service is warm, friendly, relaxed, comfortable and the food so amazingly delicious. Every dish was uncomplicated and from well sourced ingredients that made every mouthful a delight to eat. The kitchen clearly know how to get things right and the combination of each plate was superb. Great wine recommendation that made it superb overall. We will be going back, and a place to eat casually or pull out all the stops for a special occasion. Menus to suit all budgets!
Lovely food and attentive service.
The service and staff were great, they were friendly and chatted but did not over do it. The food looked simple but was far from it and the flavours were outstanding.
Nice food. Very quiet the evening I went but I think that’s unusual. Very small things would make a huge difference and make it into a top place to dine. I was al little disappointed for the money and because i’d heard much good reviews.
We had the Sunday lunch set menu. Food was good and excellent value. Generous portions. Good choice for our non-meat eaters (who do eat fish).
Service was friendly and efficient. Ambiance was good, perhaps tables are a little too close together but all parties were pretty sedate so noise levels were fine and neighbours did not feel intrusive. We had one member of our party with mobility issues and we had omitted to forewarn the restaurant. They quickly reallocated us a table with no fuss. The corridor to the toilets was very narrow and a little cluttered so access with a walker was difficult. No proper disabled loo.
Overall we would definitely recommend, although perhaps not for those with mobility problems.
We had Sunday roast with a starter. We enjoyed our food and service. Will return...
Gilbey's was, as usual, a pleasure. Being both reasonably accessible and having a fine new décor it gave us an elegant retreat as a token for our anniversary. Thank You
My daughter and I had a very enjoyable meal at Gilbey's Old Amersham to celebrate my birthday. We both had the lunch-time menu which we felt was good value for the quality of the food. The celeriac soup was delicious and it looked so appetising when served and it was very hot. Gilbey's fish and chips served with peas three different ways was also delicious and very appetising. The service was excellent. The building is very attractive and has a lovely atmosphere. We enjoyed our visit so much that I made another booking for next week!
Lovely restaurant. Staff excellent. Food really tasty and great value if you get the set menu. highly recommended.
Wonderful to return to Gilbey's after several months. The warm welcome and interesting menu were as good as ever
