Gilbey's Old Amersham
Having successfully created the first Gilbey’s in Eton in 1975, we acquired what was then the celebrated old tea shop (The Willow Tree) in 1989. After extensive alterations on the history-steeped listed building, Gilbey’s was established, boasting a stylish yet intimate restaurant, a stunning first-floor private dining room and an attractive garden.
Our team is dedicated to delivering the very best quality and value to our customers and assure you of a very warm welcome at Gilbey’s Old Amersham.
Delicious meal and great service as usual. I even got a complimentary anniversary desert even though it wasn’t my anniversary and I was dining with my elderly father lol.
Fantastic Sunday dinner. Great atmosphere, impeccable food, and the service was brilliant.
Gilbeys is my go to restaurant in Amersham. Delightfully compact with a warm friendly atmosphere, staff always willing to please, with special dietary requirements always catered for when requested.
This Christmas Sunday lunch started the festive season for us, hopefully the staff will enjoy their break too, looking forward to 2020
Very enjoyable set lunch interesting and good value
Thought the bread and butter pudding was a bit disappointing, stogy with not much flavour. Otherwise good meal in a pleasant environment. The service was a little bit slow, but probably because of Christmas, and it wasn't a problem
As usual lovely Sunday lunch with interesting and innovative menu balanced with traditional.
We had a very pleasant seat at the back of the restaurant. The service and food was very good and I would most definitely go again. The only criticism I have is that the tables seemed very close together. This didn’t affect us as we were at the back but I wouldn’t have been as comfortable sitting in the centre.
In lovely surroundings and well cooked food and wines from a nice menu. Our only complaint was the restaurant was short staffed leading to slow service. We had to request attention on several occassions which was not ideal and rather spoilt the occasion.
This must be one of the best restaurants in Amersham and the surrounding area, though it is quite small, almost like a pub. We were there for lunch, which was very reasonable and very good. Not outstanding, but we just had excellent fish and chips. I suspect other meals from the menu are truly excellent. For the most parts, excellent service, but they did not offer us a second drink, even though all three of us had finished our first by the time the main course was served. I will definitely return, however.
Having had a wonderful dinner at Gilbeys a few years ago I was very much looking forward to a repeat experience. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be. The starter was essentially a bowl of cold goats cheese with a bit of decorative fig on top. We were given a spoon and just had to spoon it up like soup. It wasn’t appetising at all. When we mentioned it the waitress admitted they’d had complaints about it before! The main was steak- in itself all was cooked well but didn’t match up to the description on the menu. Steak with chips and winter greens was actually steak with 6 chips and some wilted watercress, basically a garnish. The music was surreal. We were treated to the delights of The Chipmunks and Bert and Ernie. I kid you not. Overall, not good value for money and a downright weird experience not to be repeated again!
Consistently good - faultless.
The food tried to be clever but the main taste was lost in the juices, the chef seemed too fond of beetroot
We have been eating at Gilbeys’s for more than 30 years, it has never let us down. The service and food excellent. This time we had a baby with us and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful at seating us somewhere with a pushchair and providing hot water for milk etc. We look forward to many more lovely meals here.
Our lunch was as I hoped it would be, so glad I chose Gilbey’s to treat my friend for her 50th Birthday lunch. Thank you
For 15 years, although we visit infrequently, this remains our favourite restaurant.
Would definitely recommend and will be going back. Superb food! Efficient, friendly and helpful staff.
Wanted a comfortable lunch to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Gilbey’s hit the right tone with attentive but unobtrusive service and a great value, but very lovely lunch menu
Excellent Sunday lunch. Great food.
We were put into a rather cramped alcove with another table as there was a large party taking over the main dining room. We were so close to them that we could hardly hear each other as the noise level was extremely high. The couple on the other table left after their main course as they had had enough of the noise. The food was excellent, but did rather marr our experience. It is a fairly small restaurant.
Very good food and service. Well placed in Old Amersham
Gilbeys is long established and we have eaten there for years. Sadly in recent years the menu has become tired. Some dishes have been included year on year without variation. This visit the sirloin steak was awful, tough and presentation of the plate was poor. Garnish comprised small bunch of watercress, one escallion and the best bit was 6 hand cooked chips - all for £30.00! the glass of red wine was given free as compensation, good but not really adequate in relation to the price of the steak.
Soup was hot, but plate for other main only warm not hot.
Very sad as the ambience is good. This is not the first time we have been disappointed reently an now we shall not return.
Nice food with good service.......at a fair price
Great as always!
Lovely as always.
Had a 2 course set dinner menu - fabulous and right size portions.
Great service as usual
Small restaurant with a lovely atmosphere and friendly, attentive staff. The restaurant has been in Amersham for many years and all the meals we have had there have been most enjoyable. Always busy and buzzing. We both had the sea bream for our main course - good sized portions and beautifully cooked and presented.
I have been frequenting Gilbey’s for at least the last ten years. For any occasion or just an indulgent lunch, the food is delicious, service great, nothing is too much trouble, even if you have difficult dietary requirements they are always willing to provide you with a satisfying and delicious meal. The menu is varied seasonally with fresh ingredients and some new which are excellent, you will never be bored at Gilbey’s
Friendly atmosphere, took my Mum and Sister for a light lunch. Perfect for our needs.
My colleagues and I have been visiting this restaurant for over 15 years and it never ceases to disappoint. Staff are very friendly but professional and the food is gorgeous as always.
I would have liked to see more options on the menu for those who don't eat dairy. It was a very traditional menu. The service was very slow. But the food we ate was nice and well cooked and as the waitress advised the sorbets were very good. There was no acknowledgement of the fact I had stated it was a birthday and an anniversary on the booking form. Elsewhere for a friend's birthday we were greeted with complimentary bubbly and a pudding. Not as excellent as I had anticipated.
Nice for a treat, however expensive for food that wasn't quite right the whole time, steak was slightly overdone and duck was a bit too salty
Went there for wedding anniversary and they put us into a nice private area off the main dining room (I had not told them of the anniversary, but perhaps because we were dressed up we got this particular table) - food, wine and service all very good.
Food was excellent staff were brilliant went that little extra when they found out I was taking my daughter for her birthday lunch thank you.
Superb, as always. Set lunch menu is always excellent. Very good on gluten free options too
We've been going to Gilbey's in Old Amersham for over 10 years now, once or twice a year for anniversaries or birthdays, and we've never been disappointed. Consistently good quality and value, served by a team who care about your dining experience.
We had a lovely meal, the food was delicious. We will be back.
I have visited Gilbey's many times and been delighted with my meal but last Friday I was not.
I started with the rice ball which was tasteless. I followed with Plaice supposedly served with pickled vegetables and potatoes.
The vegetables were definitely not pickled and the beans were burnt black to an extent that I could not believe that any self respecting chef could plate them up and serve them. They took them back and then when the plate came back the beans were very very undercooked.
I will return as I feel that it was a one off, but Gilbey's really need to be more careful, they are not cheap and such occurrences should not happen.
Very attentive staff.
Meal perfect, took my 83 year old Mum, staff were lovely. Good choice of wines. Would recommend.
Our 4th time here and 1st for Sunday lunch which was delicious. It’s a pleasure to come here it’s a charming with a lovely ambience and even better delicious food.
Romantic meal for two, so hoping the restaurant would not be too busy. It wasn’t, but this does not reflect on our experiences which was excellent. Friendly, prompt, attentive but not intrusive service. Quality of food ( 1 starter, 2 mains, 1 dessert) was outstanding, the stand out being the Bakewell tart, which we fought over,
Only very minor quibble, was the waitress sitting us in an end booth with two 2 person tables next to another couple, when the rest of the restaurant was only half full. Having another couple enjoying an intimate dinner à deux right next to you in a private space would have been a little weird. We were however promptly moved to another table, with no fuss.
Overall an excellent experience. Will be back.
