Gilbey's Old Amersham
Having successfully created the first Gilbey’s in Eton in 1975, we acquired what was then the celebrated old tea shop (The Willow Tree) in 1989. After extensive alterations on the history-steeped listed building, Gilbey’s was established, boasting a stylish yet intimate restaurant, a stunning first-floor private dining room and an attractive garden.
Our team is dedicated to delivering the very best quality and value to our customers and assure you of a very warm welcome at Gilbey’s Old Amersham.
Gilbey's Fish & Hand-Cut Chips
Panko-crumbed Cornish ling [cod family], peas-three-ways, tartare sauce
Roast Sirloin of Dry-Aged Beef, Yorkshire Pudding
(served medium rare) roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables
Although the menu is limited to what Gilbey's had previously the presentation and food quality remains very good.
I had the standing and the pork. The former, one, I would say was favourite but overpriced.
My partner had the Gillette and the fish and chips which both very good with the chips being outstanding.
The wine list has something for all budgets.
The wait staff were excellent. They were friendly, attentive and nothing seemed too much.
Overall, a relaxing evening out.
So glad we found this restaurant. Surpassed our expectations. Food absolutely delicious.
Allow time to park.
We have been frequent visitors to Gilbey’s for more than 20 years but last evening’s experience has probably brought this long term relationship to an end.
Slow to be acknowledged- bit awkward in a restaurant very tight for space! Menu was very limited and we were abruptly informed there were no specials. Starters were good, main courses were not. Three of us had rather fatty chewy sirloin and hard chips. That offering doesn’t warrant a £33 price tag. Thankfully the wine was good. We decided to cut our losses and avoid puddings, etc.
The 4 of us had an aperitif each, a bottle of wine, starters and mains. The bill was over £300. That’s not good value and Gilbey’s has definitely lost its attraction as a good quality/ decent value venue for us.
These prices are comparable with the renowned Artichoke a few doors away…but the fare and the service are not!
Service was friendly and efficent. Staff were lovely
Food was hughly overpriced THAT is the only downside.
Seating was very comfortable and perfect for a group of people .
Would visit again if menu and prices were reveiwed.
The menu was varied and interesting. The food and service very good. Would certainly book again.
Excellent service and good menu choice for set lunch
Yellow washed walls and travel lodge level food and drink poster art on the walls were a warning sign but the place was encouragingly busy enough to stay optimistic as we sat down.
The outside terrace looked like a far more appealing option and we would have asked to move if it had been warmer.
Table presentation, menu design and presentation again screamed chain restaurant (complete with promotional Gilbey Group branded flyer on the table).
The menu itself not expansive 5 or so starters and mains. We had the Arancini, then the pasta and steak. All of which were exactly fine, a little bland but serviceable. prices though seemed pretty punchy in exchange.
Bright spot was the wines. In particular a very nice Pinot Noir.
Gilbeys has been there forever and maybe the sort of place that is a local institution trading off loyal repeat business.
Overall, not by any means awful but when the bill comes you might find yourself thinking as we did 'well for that we could have eaten at ..... and been blown away'
Really disappointing. The service was dismissive. The food was poor. My starter of sea trout, samphire and some sort of ships biscuit which was so hard you couldn’t bite in to it was horrible: the fish tasteless, the samphire stringy and salty and when I said that it wasn’t good, the waitresses response was that “lots of other people liked it”. No apology. The prices are inflated for what it is. The mains were edible but bland. We won’t be going back.
Some food served was still frozen/deeply chilled was disappointed in as much it is not the up market place to eat as I remember
My friend and I had a delicious meal. I had mentioned lactose intolerance when booking: this was picked up and the chef had not only marked up dishes already lactose-free but also indicated other dishes that he could adapt just for me. This made the whole meal very relaxed. Service was excellent. I am a long time customer and this evening was another confirmation of why I keep returning.
Quite excellent from arrival to leaving the outside area
Food exceptional, service attentive and efficient
Return any time we are back in the area
Great food but limited menu and pricey. They sat us far from anyone else (it was quite empty) which meant no atmosphere, and I think forgot our order as it took 50 mins to get our food (and it was nearly empty!)
Great food good service lovely building. Good outside side area as well
Lunch was good although the roast dinner was quite salty. Always a good experience here.
We had a lovely meal for my partners birthday treat. The service was efficient, friendly & discreet. The outdoor space is peaceful and romantic. We will definitely be returning!
Pleasant ambience a as bs tasty food
This is a real find! The truly excellent fare was only surpassed by the service; utterly charming young folk who gave us such a welcome and absolutely fantastic alpha
Fantastic food, beautiful scenery and amazing staff.
Will definitely be going back soon!
We have always enjoyed our meals in Gilbeys’s and hope to go again in the near future.
Friendly staff who provided attentive table service. However, the speed of table service from ordering through to being served the starter was exceptionally quick with little time between the finish of the starter and being served the main. This led to us not ordering a pudding as it was all a bit rushed for our liking.
Nice wine and the food was fine but nothing special to note. The exterior dining tables appears to offer a nicer seating arrangement than the interior.
Really good although both my wife and I had some undercooked mussels
We all had the fish which was excellent. Also a very tasty white wine.
First visit to Gilbert’s for a few years . Soup excellent . Duck OK but not 5star . Prices are up a bit !
Fabulous evening and food. Lovely treat. Thank you
Great food, friendly service, relaxed atmosphere.
The meal was perfectly satisfactory.
However in our opinion it has moved from a fine dining venue with an extensive menu pre-covid to a more bistro style with a rather limited menu.
We were charged for two drinks we didn't order which I failed to notice until we got home.
A highly recommended venue for any occasion. Seasonal menus and regular specials are great value.
Booked for our 61st wedding anniversary. Was given a very warm welcome and excellent service throughout. Good choice of menu and everything we ordered well presented and delicious. Will certainly go back
The food was very good but just in part missing a certain punch or sweetness. This wouldn't be a problem if for 2 it was near on £100. A lot of the time we were then just waiting to have plates cleared away and menus to be delivered.
Lovely place but for £100 somewhat lacking
A most enjoyable meal and a particularly good main course of duck well cooked
Good food, lovely ambience but disappointing that the Set Lunch price stated on OpenTable’s booking confirmation was not honoured.
Had a lovely early-evening meal at Gilbey's, charmingly set in the 17th Century grammar school. Food was exceptional, and the service was friendly and charming - it will be our first port of call next time we're in Old Amersham!
Great food, venue and service.
Food and service very good but we did ask for a table by the window if possible but were put by the door which was kept open on what was quite a chilly evening.
There was a table by the window which remained vacant all evening.
A great place to have that special meal.
Imaginative menu which delights the taste buds
excellent service good food but limited choice especially of the main courses
Lovely meal and very responsive to our allergies. Could do with some noise repression board on the ceiling.
As always, good tasty food. Service was good. What not to enjoy!
Had lunch in the terrace.
Very friendly staff.
Good choice on menu.
This time we had a la carte ( not the lunch menu which is very good value) and all very nice.
A really lovely evening. However, I did resent the fact that the bill included a 12.5% service charge and an automatic donation to a charity. When one has ordered expensive bottle of wine, the service charge should not necessarily be calculated on the price of that expensive wine. Customers should be given the opportunity to leave the tip they wish to. Also, we all support charities of our choice and we should not be pressured into paying for a charity that is someone else's choice. One ends a lovely evening feeling as if one has been mugged!
