Opened in 1982, Gordon’s Trattoria can be found at 231 High Street overlooking The Royal Mile. Set in Old Town near Edinburgh Castle and St. Giles’ Cathedral, this restaurant prides itself in offering delicious homemade Italian cuisine. A few local Scottish favourites like spicy haggis also find their ways into the menu. The menu showcases an admirable balance between vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. The ambience is cheerful which aptly complements the food quality. Soft music playing in the background further enhances the charm of dining in Gordon’s Trattoria. Along with a variety of pastas and pizzas, the restaurant offers a good selection of bruschetta and focaccia bread. Separate children’s portions are available at a reduced rate. Unpretentious yet lovingly cooked dishes successfully transmit the flavours of Italy to the heart of Edinburgh.

Restaurant is tired. Our table was next to a cold draft. The food was just fine, but very expensive. We later found we could have had the set lunch at The Witchery for less per head than our two shared starters, pizza and soft drink each. For the price they need to have a good look at their offering and take more care particularly over cooking and presentation. The place needs a redecorate and much more ambience. Not at all Italian. None of the staff were, though they were friendly and attentive.

This would be one of Edinburgh's Hidden Gems except that it is hidden in plain sight on the Royal Mile!
Definitely worth a visit.

We probably had our best meal of our stay in Edinburgh at this restaurant. It has an unassuming front, tucked away on the Royal Mile. The restaurant is owned by Italians, and the food is very authentic. The lasagna, homemade, was probably the best we can remember eating anywhere. The hostess was quite pleasant and made us feel comfortable. We would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Edinburgh.

A long rather dreary room with an atmosphere of stale air. We would not have stayed if we hadn't booked. Having said that, the meals arrived promptly and my wife and daughter enjoyed their ravioli. I found the penne pollo pasta very bitter. Expensive for what we had, but perhaps that's because it is on the Royal Mile?

Meat in the pasta had terrible taste. Moreover, I had to ask to warm up my lasagna cause it was clear they just put it in the microwave and the button was cold. When it came back it was again cold after the first bite.
Nevertheless I have to say the manager was super nice.

Hi
We have dinned on a few occasions in the pass but noticed a deterioration in menu choice.
Also decor is needing revamp including outside Toilets were in need of cleaning. The food was good but way overpriced. As we sat out for desert we noticed a lot of people at the outside menu. The comments were on pricing and we noticed a lot of people not coming in due to this fact. I do understand the location is prime but towards the center of the city the food is superior and less pricey and also still staying within the Tourist area.

Very much enjoyed our dinner at the trattoria.
Our only complaint was that it was a little noisy, with instructions to staff being shouted across the room!
The food was delicious and the staff waiting on us were calm and professional. Likewise the chefs, who we could see working so hard.

Tired of Scottish food, we were looking for something different and we found it at Gordon's. The service was prompt and the food was very tasty, two things not often found in combination in Scotland. Definitely a great choice if you need a break from potatoes and haggis.

The food was very ordinary. I have had much better pizza at Italian chains. The cost of a beer, £4.90 for a 330cl bottle, is frankly an outrageous ripoff. There are good vfm restaurants on and around the Royal Mile. This is not one of them. Go somewhere else.

My girlfriend and I had dinner here for our anniversary. Food was great (though their "gelato" is just ice-cream, don't be fooled), lots of good flavours and, in our experience, good value for money. Music was really good, they like their classics and some of our favourite songs just happened to come on. Only two real complaints. 1) When I booked the table online I told them it was for our anniversary, when we got there they sat us near the back of the restaurant which was empty so it was nice for us, but then started seating people right next to us which did spoil the mood a little. 2) Only a small thing but we had to ask for the bill three times before we got it, though to be fair it was busy by that time. Otherwise we had a lovely time, and would go again for sure!

Arrived at the restaurant on time for our table. Were then shown to our table and then ignored for next 20 minutes. Not even offered a drink. Table next to us offered drinks twice in this time. Another table arrived and was seated offered drinks and was about to have their food order taken, at this point on one had yet even acknowledged our presence so we left for another restaurant

Thank you to Gordon's brother for allowing us to eat at the restaurant considering we were 15 minutes late because our plane was delayed for an hour. He was very hospitable, charming and very attentive. We didn't have to wait very long for our food. The food was excellent, tasty and good portions as well. It was the best meal and restaurant that made us feel welcomed for our first visit in Scotland as we celebrated a birthday. You won't be disappointed with food or the service. Don't miss out. It's a wonderful restaurant. Paulina was also a very friendly server as well.

We arrived at 6pm and the staff were very friendly and joking around ahead of the busy time (starts about 8pm). It's a lively Royal Mile restaurant and music can be a tad loud, but they turned it down when we remarked on it. The antipasto board was a lovely selection and plenty of fish and quality seafood in the mains we chose, excellent taste, good to see the chefs at work. A great anniversary evening, thanks.

We found this restaurant on open table and decided to give it a try. We were blown away by the authenticity of the food, our of the several Italian restaurants tha royal like this has got to be one of the top. Highly recommend the Gnocchi or penne al ragu, as well as the focaccia starter. Had there been enough room for dessert we would have gotten the cheesecake of the day. Overall great place, would visit again if I'm back in Edinburgh.

The evening was a total disaster, no steak, no lamb just chicken. We were shown to a table with so little space that the staff had to turn sideways to get through, we ordered and received wine but were not told that menu was largely unavailable until it came to place an actual order

At this point a larger group with young children arrived expecting a table for say eight with a table for only six available, we were going to be further squeezed, complained and left. A waitress seemed to think it was our fault that we were disappointed by the lack of menu, poor surroundings and general horrible atmosphere

I can think of no reason why I would ever want to return to this place

There was an unpleasant smell in the restaurant when walking by the stairs that led down to the toilets. Once seated, we found we were directly under an air conditioning unit blasting hot air on to the table which was frustrating. This, in fairness, was switched off promptly when we we requested.

We ordered 2 lasagnes, a portion of fries and 2 proseccos.

The lasagne arrived on side plates which was unusual. When we then started eating it was lukewarm at best on the outside and almost cold in the middle. The waiter was apologetic and took them away, we thought to be replaced. Evidently, however, the same food was brought back simply with the edges trimmed and some fresh parmesan sprinkled on top! They were warmer than the first time of asking but still nowhere near describable as hot.

The prosecco was relatively flat and not well chilled so did nothing to make up for the awful food.

When presented with the bill for nearly £50 the waiter had the cheek to comment that he only charged us for 2 lasagnes!

Unfortunately, it was an all round terrible eating experience for a new year's eve dinner from a restaurant that had generally favourable reviews.

Went on new years eve. Really busy but still quick service. The food was excellent. Really good atmosphere. Friendly waiters and waitresses even though it was very busy. They did not seem stressed at all. Best beef stroganoff I have ever had. The calzone is very good too. Will definitely go back here when we are in Edinburgh again.
