We needed a “wee little break” from traditional Scottish food and found Gordon’s Trattoria on OpenTable with high ratings. We had Gordon’s brother as our server, who kept us laughing the whole meal. I ordered the pizza with spicy sausage and rocket (pepperoni and arugula) and it was piping hot and delicious! Highly recommended for a casual dinner for weary travelers!
From the moment we arrived the evening was excellent. The manager was warm and friendly and made wonderful suggestions for our dinner. From the local beer to the pizza and pasta specials, the food came out hot and delicious.
Great authentic Italian cuisine. Definitely will try again next time we are in Edinburgh.
They charge you 10% service by default. Thought is was optional :-(
Expensive place then, food was very good but in some appetizers too cold.
It was closed even though they took the booking and website stated they were open
Food was delicious and Gary was a charming host! Front room was busy and probably somewhat loud but we were there on a Monday night and sat in the back room with no other customers most of the time so it was much quieter. After nearly two weeks of great Scottish seafood and game, I really needed my Italian "fix" and Gordon's filled the bill perfectly! Spaghetti Amatriciana was wonderful with huge amounts of pancetta!
Kind of a bizarre mix of an incredible Italian trattoria and an old-style diner, with smallish booths and a view into the "kitchen", which was little more than a flat top, a pizza oven and a fryer. The staff was engaged in a running bit of very loud banter, which - once you realized it for what it was - was consistent with the rest of the place, which was quite unpretentious. When the food arrived, however, all concerns went away. Beautifully presented, flawlessly prepared, and incredibly affordable pastas, breads and sauces. What a gem of a place for a relaxed but incredible meal. Would highly recommend for a relaxed evening with great food.
Brilliant food and service. They even made me a custom pizza just because I wanted one! Awesome!!!!
I just dropped my daughter off in Edinburg and she wanted one last night of Italian before I left. The reviews of Gordon’s on Yelp and Open Table we’re solid so we decided to give it a try. The service was fantastic. The food was excellent. Moreover it was a great value.
Thanks for accommodating our larger group then what I had reserved for. The staff were very friendly and the food enjoyed by all 7 of us.
Boisterous restaurant with abundant food and cheerful welcoming service
Outstanding food and service! The staff was attentive but not intrusive. We found the music was slightly incongruous. Rock and roll with an Italian vibe was an interesting combination, but once the food came you forgot it was there. We liked it enough to come back the next night for a pizza! Highly recommended!
Wonderful! Huge portions: we split an excellent pasta dish in order to have room for banoffe pie. Servers were The Best! Friendly, like family. Cozy atmosphere.
Excellent food. Really recommend the Penne Special, so good! Large portions.
We had Gary as our server. The staff was welcoming, kind, and we had a great time. The food and wine choices were excellent. Our server did everything to make his tables feel well attended. Outstanding experience and reasonably priced. Gary is great!
Don't let the name fool you. This is a true Italian place even if it is named Gordon's. Walk in and you can imagine Sinatra and the gang eating at a back table. If you like mussels, try the seafood risotto. Loved every bite and every minute of being there.
Food was exquisite and hospitality was great
Friendly staff, good food and lovely place.
So disappointed!! We had 3 different pasta dishes all very bland and stodgy! When we told waiter he was very rude. Won’t be back
Way to expensive for a small plate of ravioli which was average to poor. I have had tinned ravioli with sauce just as good. Place inside needs revamped. Not comfortable to be in or look at. Need to spend some money on the place. Wouldn't go back.
lovely lunch while waiting for airport transfer - thanks
Small friendly and well priced restaurant on Royal mile .worth a visit for a quick pizza or pasta and food goodand large variety
The restaurant was very brightly lit. We shared a bruschetta for starters which was fine. We both then had a pasta dish which was very disappointing. They were both supposed to contain Italian sausage but mine was laden in what appeared to be packet pepperami which had been cooked and was very dry and firm. My partner's dish did contain some sausage but also a lot of dried out pepperami. The sauce was non-descript. Woul not go again if in Edinburgh.
I was disappointed with our visit to Gordon's Trattoria. The Trip Advisor reviews were all so good, that is why we booked. The inside was more like an american ice cream parlour than a traditional Italian Trattoria. The food was at best ok but presentation was not good. I had squid to start which was good. My husband had pate and said that was good too. The mains were what let it down for both of us. Portion size was enormous and was just heaped onto the plate. I had chicken milanese which was very dry and I left most of it. My husband had the prawns which he said were good and the sauce they were in was lovely. It was served with the biggest portion of rice which completely overshadowed the main star of the show (the prawns) and most of that got left too. Two starters, two mains and two glasses of wine each and the bill came to £112! The following evening we went to Bella Italia, had very similar food which was far better presented with a much livelier atmosphere and the bill came to £59.95 which included a bottle of wine. You pays your money and you takes your choice!
Had an absolute blast here! Just one man working the whole floor, including the front, but he was just fantastic. Had my boyfriend and I in stitches the whole night! Plus the food was incredible-we each had seafood dishes and agreed the prawns were the biggest we’d ever seen. A litre of the house red was the perfect compliment to the meal. They even humored our order of garlic bread as a dessert (which was a great idea-the bread was light and just the right amount of buttery). All in all, highly recommend this spot for a fun and delicious meal
Love this place, been twice this week while up in Edinburgh,. Food is excellent, staff friendly and helpful.
The atmosphere was great for kids and the service was good (if a little over-powering). The food however was not good at all. Cooked ok, looked ok but tasted of next to nothing. The garlic bread didn't taste at all of garlic, the pasta was bland, as was the pizza. We will happily pay £200 for a good meal but pay £120 for extremely bland food we do not or will not again i'm afraid.
Very helpful waiter.
Food arrived promptly.
Calizone pizza - far too much, very chewy, cheese. Unpalatable. Lots of waste.
Great night, booked this on chance for a group of colleagues, but will definately be back. Great food. Great service.
Amazing service from Gary. Nothing was to much trouble. The food was outstanding. Would definitely recommend. Thank you for making such an effort.
Great experience! Owner was very friendly and made our dinner great!
Restaurant is tired. Our table was next to a cold draft. The food was just fine, but very expensive. We later found we could have had the set lunch at The Witchery for less per head than our two shared starters, pizza and soft drink each. For the price they need to have a good look at their offering and take more care particularly over cooking and presentation. The place needs a redecorate and much more ambience. Not at all Italian. None of the staff were, though they were friendly and attentive.
The food was exceptional and the service was top notch
Staff really friendly and attentive; good for kids; scrummy food - think I ordered too much!
Beautifully cooked authentic Italian food served by friendly, efficient and caring staff. Bread and pizza dough is stunning, Lasagne is best ever.
Recently visited with my husband and our friends. The service was so personable. The waiter offered alternatives and recommendations to ensure we had the best experience possible. The food was incredible and all the staff were very friendly.
This would be one of Edinburgh's Hidden Gems except that it is hidden in plain sight on the Royal Mile!
Definitely worth a visit.
The food was very good but very expensive and there was no ambiance, know better Italians in Edinburgh.
We probably had our best meal of our stay in Edinburgh at this restaurant. It has an unassuming front, tucked away on the Royal Mile. The restaurant is owned by Italians, and the food is very authentic. The lasagna, homemade, was probably the best we can remember eating anywhere. The hostess was quite pleasant and made us feel comfortable. We would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Edinburgh.
Wonderful meal. Great service. Great food. People around us were very complimentary about their meals to the hostess as well.
