We began in 1964. It was the time of the Beatles and Rolling Stones and an air of great fun. Anything seemed possible, it was the Sixties! Grumbles was the first restaurant in London with a silly name!
In the early days as we rushed around the tables, we hardly had time to notice the faces of the likes of Beatles, Mamas and Papas, Julie Christie, Michael Foot, Christine Keeler, Ian le Frenais, Rod Steiger and so many many more as well as Jane Lapotaire sometimes helping with the Founder Jeremy Friend washing up!
Grumbles and its customers have been such a winning combination for over forty years and we thank you for all your support.
The food was OK to good. Crab starter really disappointing and generally not a very balanced starter selection two of the party unable to find anything they fancied. The mains were better although pricey for a very basic pasta dish. The steaks were good the fish OK. All in all a nice evening service good. Wine expensive for the quality served.
We had so looked forward to our evening meal at Grumbles but sadly it fell far short of the standard expected. We were put right next to a very loud group and the tables were so closely pushed together that we had to move our entire table to avoid knocking the table next to us and their plates and glasses. Our table may as well have been with the groups, it was that close. Although waiting staff were fairly pleasant to us and they did experience some rudeness from the group next to us, we felt that the service was a bit rushed to get the tables free to accommodate other guests. Which was fine, we never spend hours on end at restaurants but it did feel rushed and they made a point of speaking to me on the phone twice about how the table would only be available to us for a certain period of time. We didn't feel it needed stressing that much. If you're that worried about it, surely its best to tell guests you can't accommodate them? But we had booked months in advance to make sure we got an early table before going to see a show nearby so this wasn't an issue. The food was fairly mediocre and nothing special that would make us want to return. We were quite disappointed and felt there were many other places we could have gone to and would have had a more comfortable meal in surroundings that didn't make us feel like battery farmed chickens. We have no problems with the mannerisms of the staff who served us but we did feel our dining experience was inordinately uncomfortable and that the food in no way compensated for this. We thought they had reservations all night but the whole time we were there, a separate small booth opposite lay empty which we could have occupied comfortably and would not have disrupted any other guests we came across whilst we were there. Sadly would not return.
We had a pleasant evening at Grumbles. However, the food was quite expensive for what it was. The main liver & bacon was £17 plus an extra £8 for potato and veg! The fish and chips at £14.50 was frozen not fresh and pre made chips. For these prices I would expect more. The staff were friendly but nothing exceptional. Not sure I would go back as there are plenty of other restaurants nearby.
The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere, very quaint, lovely setting for a romantic dinner for two or for a group of people to go. The food was lovely, and the staff very attentive. Will defo be going there again.
The food was beautifully cooked and presented. The staff were very accommodating with a couple of changes we requested on our order, service was quick and served with a smile. Will definitely return next time I am in London.
We went to celebrate a family birthday. We sat downstairs at a secluded table in a niche under the stairs. Great choice on the menu- with something for everyone: meat, fish, veggie and spicy/garlic options. We were 5 and all had a different starter; 2 of us had the same main course and we all choose different desserts. Staff were attentive without being intrusive.
Traditional and cosy, amazing character and food for everyone
One of the more surprising and authentic restaurant experiences I have had in a long time. Friendly welcome, great table, attentive service and the ambiance and meal experience all fell beautifully into place. Food was delicious too, what a gem
Lovely little independent restaurant that serves really well made decent ‘real’ food...nothing very fancy which matches the ambience and the decor....just a down to earth, little gem of a place that I’m lucky to live nearby. Thanks!
Fab location and ambient
What an amazing find! Definitely going back again!
Delightful little jewel, loved it
Reservation was as requested, an intimate table downstairs. Wait staff was attentive without hovering, providing excellent descriptions of dishes when requested. An upscale restaurant with good value for your money, Grumbles is a “must go” place when in London.
Great neighbourhood diner friendly people good food and house wine
Always a good dining experience! Looking forward to next visit,
I had not been to Grumbles but for years, but wanted somewhere relaxing to meet friends. Grumbles is a bistro, slightly cramped, quirky and French. The service was excellent, the food good bistro food, and the whole experience good value.
Wonderful evening as always
We had a lovely family meal at Grumbles. Service was excellent, food delicious with perfect portions. We had a mix of meat and fish dishes all cooked perfectly. Originally planned to just have two courses but the food was so nice we couldn't resist a pudding and they did not disappoint! We would definitely visit again.
We had a pre-theatre dinner at Grumbles. It was perfect. The food was fantastic and completely in keeping with the mood we were expecting from the charming venue of Grumbles itself. The service was just right too. Attentive and helpful but not overbearing. We also needed food in a relatively quick timeframe which was sorted with no fuss. Also, my wife is a coeliac and again that was accomdated without fuss.
Massively recommended - exactly what you would expect rustic, charming and delicious.
Lovely characterful restaurant, such a shame the food is so mediocre
We enjoyed our food (the chicken with mushroom sauce was very tasty!) but found the service to be slow. It is a very "cosy" restaurant and the tables were close together. Unfortunately the couple next to us were very loud which didn't help. I probably wouldn't return.
Friendly unpretentious atmosphere with great staff and good quality good value menus
Come every year or two when staying locally for a long weekend. A cosy place with character, good food of a wide selection, and friendly helpful service.
I like Grumbles and have eaten there a couple of times. They are ideally placed between Tate Britain and Victoria so eating there is a great way to round off a good day out in town. The food is honest and good. The service is excellent and friendly and the ambience is perfect - a Pimlico bistro with a traditional London-village feel. Give it a try. You absolutely will not go wrong.
We went to grumbles before going to a show and had the pre show set menu. The staff were friendly and very helpful when i explained im coeliac and have to be careful with what I eat. My partner and I both had catfish for our main and it was absolutely delicious. The restaurant itself is rustic and cosy, would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone heading in this area... we will definitely return, hopefully for an evening meal next time!
Lovely family meal in Grumbles. We loved the ambience and homemade style of delicious food. The puddings were amazing - all homemade - crumble, sticky date pudding and ice-cream with chocolate sauce for the kids. Would definitely go back again!
We had a lovely time at Grumbles, lovely ambiance, nice service, typical London, really nice food. I would recomend this to my friends, for sure!
Great service and delicious food! Would recommend highly. It’s small and quaint, feels like you’re eating over at a close friend’s house.
Another wonderful meal experience at Grumbles. Excellent choices on the menu, great atmosphere and perfect service. The best place anywhere in the world!
Ambience lively but food a real let down . Very bland sadly
Had a lovely Christmas Lunch. Food and service were excellent. Couldn’t fault it.
We had a really good time, with friendly and efficient services. Food was good and team was really attentive.
Grumbles is always superb. Like a private cosy welcoming friendly dining club.
Good value good quality food with excellent service. Seating area cramped though which spoilt an otherwise enjoyable lunch.
Eating here is great - simple food well done and served in a lovely cozy restaurant. One of my go-to places in London
what a lovely little bistro restaurant. Lovely people, lovely food, we had a little downstairs cabin (about 10 people) with a little barge boat feel to it, and we loved it for our party of 7. Stairs are a little steep for those it might affect, but other wise we loved our meal and it was good value for money. The steak we had was better than good ... it was so tender and cooked to perfection. Very hospitable too. Loved it!
We had a very quick pre-concert meal here. Lovely atmosphere, great service and food. My skate-wing and accompaniments were absolutely delicious. Very nice house wine. Will definitely be returning, but hoping to linger longer next time.
Been coming here for 35 years and never fail to be impressed. Welcoming, friendly with good food and excellent service
Lovely staff and prompt service. The food was fine, but could have been a little more imaginative. Hate to be negative, as we had a lovely meal and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves
I love eating here - cozy, atmospheric, good food, well cooked.
