Very average food - small restaurant quickly lends itself to looking like it’s busy therefore easy to assume it’s good but in our case it was expensive and average. I’d rather queue an hour and have Dishoom - which is miles better.
Restaurant is small and therefore so are the tables which doesn’t lend itself to the Tapas style that they serve as there’s hardly enough space for drinks and food. I’ve had worse and therefore it wasn’t a full on disappointment but certainly wouldn’t ever come back.
Tremendous indian food, we'll definitely be going back. FYI it's a small venue so not ideal for larger groups.
Delicious and innovative menu . Tapas plates. Lamb chops were outstanding . Lovely intimate and informal ambience . Food options focussed and all were outstanding . Would recommend .
Seriously delicious modern Indian food. A little on the spicey side! We had dinner at 5:30 because we could get a booking later. But unbeknown to us they keep quite a few seats for walk ins so probablycould have just come later!
I had been looking forward to visiting Gunpowder as had heard great things from a friend.
When I had 3 overseas visitors here that like curry I thought it was a perfect opportunity.
Firstly it is very very small.
I arrived at 5.25 for a 5.30 booking and was told that it was not open yet (opens at 5.30) despite the neon lit up ‘open’ light above the front door. They also didn’t appear to have my booking built getting a table was easy.
The menu is very limited it is tapas style small plates but honestly I was disappointed with the choice. No naan or other bread whatsoever. The highlights were a duck pancake, egg masala curry and a beef dish. The chicken had little meat on and the lamb chops were nice but overpriced.
All in all it was ok but I would not return
Aloo chaat was terrific. So was the venison doughnut. Broccoli was just mediocre—pieces were unnecessarily big. And pork ribs were below mediocre.
Great space. Happy to support innovative thoughts on Indian food.
Great place!! The food is delicious and well presented. Just on the edge of the City, it’s just about manageable at lunchtime for a little time out. Staff are super welcoming and helpful with assistance with descriptions of the food and choice.
Gunpowder is a very intimate restaurant and has a cosy feel. There is a one page menu to select your food from, but it provides enough selection. The food comes out in little plates, so it's like tapas style dining. The food was delicious, the lamb chops are an absolute must! there was a lot of variety, you could have authentic style food or indian food with a bit of a twist. It's not the type of restaurant where you sit for hours, but they're certainly not rushing you out of the door.
We went for lunch. Be sure to make reservations.. it is VERY small. Although I hear there is one in central London that is larger. Everything was just perfect.SOOOO good! Just loved loved loved!!
Great food, tasty, different - well worth a visit. Small and noisy when it's full but a good atmosphere.
Amazing flavours! The venison donut is a must. The aloo chaat was surprisingly delicious and they elevate the humble potato to new heights!
Great service and food outstanding. Can’t wait to go back and sample more dishes from the menu!
Amazing dishes and not your typical curry meal. Exceptional spin on your favorite flavors but spun up with Kale, duck and other exceptional proteins and less carbs.
Tiny backstreet restaurant worth finding. Excellent food served as sharing dishes, fresh and innovative. If you're looking for a casual dining experience this is a great little restaurant, the only downside would be that the service was unfriendly.
I absolutely LOVE the food here. I am a foodie, and cook Indian food, but this is sublime. A bit noisy though.
It’s an amazing dining experience with good food and good service! Love this cute Indian restaurant.
Fantastic food, great service
Gunpowder has a fantastic menu and delicious, imaginative dishes. Highly recommended!
So cramped together, can’t sit together with other half and have a nice meal. Food was soooo bad
Amazing and different.
Small cosy place.
Indian food as I nevet tasted before
Really good food, venue is a bit cramped but you come here for the food
Really good flavours and innovative dishes! Especially if your looking for a different twist on Indian food. I can’t recommend this place enough
Good quality meat and tasty food with good portion sizes. The restaurant is quite compact and so the tables are close together which meant there was not a lot of privacy.
School canteen style format with dim lighting. I can’t give a full opinion of the menu as only one of my 2 dishes arrived . The ribs I had , were just syrup and mono sodium glutamate.where was the Indian influence! I’m particularly disappointed as I was impressed by the gunpowder book , which boasted an extensive knowledge of several regions of traditional Indian cuisine with a modern twist .Seeing other people’s food turning up , looked mediocre at best . The gunpowder masala spice on my husbands dish , was heavy with cinnamon and dominated any other spice used in it .
The food was lovely so can’t complain but pirtions smaller than I recall from the last visit. The waitress could have been more helpful with recommendations after advising the lamb was quite big. It wasn’t.
This was my one of my fav restaurants but for some reason the staff were not as accommodating or helpful as previous visits. Food is still amazing though.
Way too expensive, wayyyy to noisey! Food didn’t match the costs
Very tasty tapas style Indian food, great for sharing.
The crab was outstanding. Nice outmosphere. Interesting food. Fun area of town. I'll be going back.
Very good food in a simple environment. I would definitely recommend the saag (the best I've ever had) and the soft shell crab.
Not very good venue and not a good drinks choice food was ok but booked a table for 17:30 and when we got there 10 min early we then had to wait till 18:00 before they would start to make the food, wasn’t bad food but still a little disappointed
Another delicious lunch at one of the best Indian spots in town - the food was better than ever. Highlights were soft-shelled crab, pulled duck, fennel fish cakes and more.
I would get a table here if you can!
Obviously well sought after and successful restaurant, food was good but service average and we ended up not getting the signature dish of lamb chops. Maybe we caught a bad night..
The must have starter, hot spicy shot of soup with a round dhosa set a great standard that the rest of the meal matched. I shared a salad, a soft shell crab and a sticky pork rib dish with a friend. Each plate just kept getting better than the one before, we thought. The wine was good, fresh and inexpensive. Book now. There were queues of wanna be walk-ins.
Great food, along with a brilliant atmosphere. A litt neighbourhood gem!!
Second visit and it just gets better. Service was very personal, thoughtful and kind. Food just extraodinary, nice bottle of Chablis to wash it down, faultless
Can’t recommend enough. Delicious! It is a sharing menu so gives you the opportunity to try lots of different dishes!
Great food but too desperate to get you out to really enjoy. Great if you’re in a hurry but practically removing you’re food before you’re finished.
Don't really want to recommend Gunpowder as it is small and you have to wait for a table. The fewer people that know how good it is, the better (for me!). Have now managed to have everything on the menu at least twice. Not to be missed: egg curry masala, tandoori paneer, aloo chaat, venison 'doughtnut', and the soft shell crab.
Hard to pick favorites! Egg malsala. Soft shell crab. Venison doughnut. Lamb chops
