What Insiders Are Saying
Gunpowder is a simply designed little restaurant off Commercial Street serving extremely inventive takes on Indian food that will blow your mind.
School canteen style format with dim lighting. I can’t give a full opinion of the menu as only one of my 2 dishes arrived . The ribs I had , were just syrup and mono sodium glutamate.where was the Indian influence! I’m particularly disappointed as I was impressed by the gunpowder book , which boasted an extensive knowledge of several regions of traditional Indian cuisine with a modern twist .Seeing other people’s food turning up , looked mediocre at best . The gunpowder masala spice on my husbands dish , was heavy with cinnamon and dominated any other spice used in it .
The food was lovely so can’t complain but pirtions smaller than I recall from the last visit. The waitress could have been more helpful with recommendations after advising the lamb was quite big. It wasn’t.
This was my one of my fav restaurants but for some reason the staff were not as accommodating or helpful as previous visits. Food is still amazing though.
Way too expensive, wayyyy to noisey! Food didn’t match the costs
Very tasty tapas style Indian food, great for sharing.
The crab was outstanding. Nice outmosphere. Interesting food. Fun area of town. I'll be going back.
Very good food in a simple environment. I would definitely recommend the saag (the best I've ever had) and the soft shell crab.
Not very good venue and not a good drinks choice food was ok but booked a table for 17:30 and when we got there 10 min early we then had to wait till 18:00 before they would start to make the food, wasn’t bad food but still a little disappointed
Another delicious lunch at one of the best Indian spots in town - the food was better than ever. Highlights were soft-shelled crab, pulled duck, fennel fish cakes and more.
I would get a table here if you can!
Obviously well sought after and successful restaurant, food was good but service average and we ended up not getting the signature dish of lamb chops. Maybe we caught a bad night..
The must have starter, hot spicy shot of soup with a round dhosa set a great standard that the rest of the meal matched. I shared a salad, a soft shell crab and a sticky pork rib dish with a friend. Each plate just kept getting better than the one before, we thought. The wine was good, fresh and inexpensive. Book now. There were queues of wanna be walk-ins.
Great food, along with a brilliant atmosphere. A litt neighbourhood gem!!
Second visit and it just gets better. Service was very personal, thoughtful and kind. Food just extraodinary, nice bottle of Chablis to wash it down, faultless
Can’t recommend enough. Delicious! It is a sharing menu so gives you the opportunity to try lots of different dishes!
Great food but too desperate to get you out to really enjoy. Great if you’re in a hurry but practically removing you’re food before you’re finished.
Don't really want to recommend Gunpowder as it is small and you have to wait for a table. The fewer people that know how good it is, the better (for me!). Have now managed to have everything on the menu at least twice. Not to be missed: egg curry masala, tandoori paneer, aloo chaat, venison 'doughtnut', and the soft shell crab.
Hard to pick favorites! Egg malsala. Soft shell crab. Venison doughnut. Lamb chops
The space is small, cozy and modern. And the food is unreal! Definitely suggest the lamb chops and spicy venison donut. The service was decent save we felt very rushed through our meal. The space is tiny so I can understand needing to turn tables quickly to avoid a long wait time, I just wish we could have savored our meal more rather than being pressed to leave. Overall we loved the food and will definitely return.
Second time and the food continues to stand out. Great opportunity to try lots of flavours and stumble over some great dishes that might well not have been ordered if the style of dining had been more traditional.
The food was EXCELLENT. We ordered the okra fries twice-- to die for!.
The service was incredible.
Perfect place. The sag paneer is to die for, omg. I would return just for that dish alone. All dishes would very nice but that one stood out as an all time great
This was a rather disappointing experience. The food was amazing - the best modern Indian I have had in a long time. However the service was shockingly bad. Confusingly so in this day and age and for a hip restaurant in London. We arrived at 12pm for a 12pm reservation. The restaurant was closed - staff still cleaning it up. They kept us waiting for about 15 mins without apology and were apathetic bordering on rude when my friend inquired when they would open. Service didn’t improve much later with a bored waitress asking us twice which bottle of wine we ordered (despite our pointing to it) and then bringing us the wrong bottle anyway. Mistakes can be excused but she continued to maintain that it was the bottle we had asked for. There were no niceties. The staff engaged in some sort of half muffled fight where one person was told to go home. All this in a Restaurant the size of a spacious corridor.
The only plus point was the food was DELICIOUS and the wine was good.
Mixed feelings here. I would go back for the food but without improving its abysmal service, this restaurant is going nowhere.
Best Indian food ever
Kitchen serving great food
Beer and drinks quite pricey
Delicious! Light, modern Indian. Excellent location.
One of the best meals I've had in a long time. Every thing was delicious, especially the lamb chops and the aloo chaat.
Great food full of flavour. Perfect if you like Indian food with a tapas twist. Good service and booking is essential.
Seriously good food. Every thing we ordered was delicious and I only wish I could have managed to eat & try more of the dishes! It's a perfect place to share and was a lovely place to celebrate me & my partners anniversary. I definitely recommend and I will be going again to try more of the menu.
Brought first-timers and they enjoyed the food! It was tasty, portions were good and a suitable place for a quick team meal
Staff was very helpful walking us thru the menu and giving recommendations. We really enjoyed it
Best indian food I have tasted. So fresh , mouthwatering and moorish. Waitors were very helpful with recommending dishes.
Very small inside, so go early in order to have a seat.
This was out second visit to Gunpowder after being left craving another visit straight after our first time here! The food is like nothing else on earth it's so fresh and flavoursome I just wish it was closer to me as I'd definitely be a regular diner here!
Gunpowder was brought to our attention by an Indian friend of ours - her nephew owns it. So we decided we had to try it, and boy, we were not disappointed. The restaurant is quite small and we had read reviews saying how people had to queue, so we booked a table just in case. The food was delicious, and unlike any other Indian food we have tried ( we have travelled a lot). We ordered quite a lot for a lunchtime and I was a bit worried that we might not finish it. The waiter reassured me that they had takeaway boxes, but the food was so good we did manage to eat it all. We had the rasam ke bomb, gunpowder aloo chat, porzhi okra fries, the pulled duck, the pork ribs, and half a mustard broccoli. We will definitely be going again.
I would recommend this place for a group meal. It's sharing food. Not good for a date.
Food was tasty, I enjoyed the shot glass soup with a crispy puri on top covering a creamy mash potato. I enjoyed most of the food, though I think for the money it isn't enough of a long enjoyable evening, and I think £12 for a broccoli is too steep.
I wouldn't come here again though as it was too crowded, and therefore noisy. Glad I was here for a casual dinner and not an occasion. Almost sitting on the couple next to us.
Very small drinks/ pudding menu.
The website with an out of date (by four months) sample menu also annoyed me, as did the lack of response to a question on social media.
I would give this place 6/10.
The okra fries were delicious. When we asked the waitress what porzhi referred to , she said she thought it was an area of India...really?
Good food ,chops a bit overpriced. Mocktail needed to be made with freshly squeezed juices.
Food is good but not as refined as it seems on picture. It needs more veggie options and halal meat. The tapas style is nice but at the end it is very expensive and the price does not reflect the service nor the quality of the food. The Chai was a tea bag and was charged as if it was a fresh one!
Great food, creative menu, and friendly, informative service. Would definitely come again and recommend to friends.
Great food! And overall fantastic service! But book in advance and don't overstay your welcome! Our waitress was quick to remind she had a queue. Fair enough, because the place is tiny. I'd suggest they maybe have a minimum '2 hour stay' policy....?
I'd definitely go back though, the food was divine!
we went to the Gunpowder mid-week , nice table for 4 next to the bar , Kitchen opens at 6pm, recommend the lamb chops - great food great service - well worth a visit !
Small intimate restaurant great for casual dining and meeting friends. Food is delicious with Indian dishes I had not experienced before. Lovely flavours
Unique place with creative Indian small plates. Each item with it's own distinctive flavor but not overwhelming. Fast service and nice staff. Not the traditional curry and naan place to stuff up. Hole in the wall location with a warm feel.
