I love the food at Gunpowder.
I also really appreciate that it isn't a loud space.
We could all hear each other and enjoyed a delicious meal with comfortable conversation, unlike some places where I can barely hear the person sitting beside me which, for me, ruins everything.
Cannot fault this place, everything about it was well thought out, well executed and I will absolutely be going again. The food was well flavoured, well spiced and portioned, not too much/too little.
I paid £50 approx for myself and a guest (lunch) and walked away very happy.
Great little place.
Food was excellent and staff was very friendly and accommodating!
Look forward to coming back on my next return to London.
The ambience was intimate and the lighting particularly good. The staff were attentive and professional. The problem was that we had read so many good reviews of the food, we had quite high expectations. We both ordered the vegetarian menu and found it to be hit and miss. The Aloo Chat was delicious and the curried eggs were very enjoyable too. However, the tough broccoli in a sour and spicy sauce was borderline unpleasant. The main disappointment was the main / final course: bland rice (I yearned for cumin, or coconut, or something that would make it nicer than the boil in the bag rice one might cook at home), and Sag Paneer that was just a bit flavourless. The Sag was nice enough, paneer is mild by nature, but it was a boring end to a meal that started with good promise.
We had the set menu (non vegetarian) - traditionally cooked Indian food, fabulous flavours and spices, delivered separately over time (not rushed) each dish just enough to share.
Being a small space, everyone is close including the staff and that adds to the whole ambience and all the staff are attentive and genuinely friendly and personable. Most likely one of the best and most original Indian restaurants in London. And the Malbec was good too of course!
This sounds like the kind of flattering review I’d read and think was false, but this one is real! Loved it and will be back.
We had the pre-set menu. Food was delicious. However, this place is very small and if you come as a couple they will sit another couple right next to you at the same table for four if they have larger groups (which they did the night we were there). Table is too small to accommodate all the dishes. Noise level is incredibly loud. Only come here for the food.
Gunpowder has a good array of tapas-style Indian delicacies. The Spicy Venison and Vermicelli Doughnut is a must-have as well as the Chettinad Pulled Duck.
Compact in size but big in flavour. Every single item we ordered was delicious. The lamb chops are to die for.
Excellent food and great staff and service. The lamb chops are the best. Highly recommended.
Amazing food, reasonable prices, generally good service until we were finished - only minor gripe was no one cleared our plates and it was a bit hard to grab a waiter to get our bill. Will definitely be back!!
Great food, especially the pork ribs!
Tables were a little small considering tapas style dining but generally food was high quality if not a little over-priced
Whilst the food wasn't bad the lack of service and atmosphere did not make this an enjoyable dinner. It's a very small place and therefore quite loud and my dish was served around 20 minutes after that of my partner, whilst the waitress was asking if all was ok with our food. Plus, an Indian place with no Naan seems a bit weird. There are better places to chose from when it comes to Indian food.
Awesome, everything is just awesome. I will be back very soon
A cosy atmosphere, with delicious twist on traditional dishes. We had the vegetarian dishes, aloo chaat, okra fries, broccoli roast and saag paneer. We were sat on a sharing table, which was a bit awkward, as the space was tight. We really enjoyed the starters. The broccoli was ok, and there was no bread option which was a little disappointing. But all in all a decent experience. Price with a bottle of wine came to approx £80 for two
Sent 5 executive staff here on Monday for celebratory meal, words back next day were food was dynamite and that I had found a little gem of a restaurant.
Thank you to the staff!
Food is delicious but quickly adds up. We were sat on a table right by the kitchen where the door kept opening with really bright light and ruined the ambiance a bit.
Great, innovative food. Five tasting plates plus soft drink for two came in at £65 which was good value. This chef should go far.
Attentive service, cool and calm atmosphere. And the food was to die for. Had a good few of their signature dishes, to share as they recommended. Well done!
The food was so flavoursome and tasty. An impressive and imaginative vegetarian selection. The atmosphere was intimate but very lovely. I would definitely recommend.
It's a very difficult menu to choose from, so if you have a large enough party make sure you order one of everything! Particularly notable dishes are the venison doughnut, the lamb chops and the tandoori chicken. The ribs are excellent too, as is the curried broccoli. Can't recommend highly enough. The staff are absolutely charming and the service consistently good. Thanks to the team there for a great meal again!
Very average food - small restaurant quickly lends itself to looking like it’s busy therefore easy to assume it’s good but in our case it was expensive and average. I’d rather queue an hour and have Dishoom - which is miles better.
Restaurant is small and therefore so are the tables which doesn’t lend itself to the Tapas style that they serve as there’s hardly enough space for drinks and food. I’ve had worse and therefore it wasn’t a full on disappointment but certainly wouldn’t ever come back.
Tremendous indian food, we'll definitely be going back. FYI it's a small venue so not ideal for larger groups.
Delicious and innovative menu . Tapas plates. Lamb chops were outstanding . Lovely intimate and informal ambience . Food options focussed and all were outstanding . Would recommend .
Seriously delicious modern Indian food. A little on the spicey side! We had dinner at 5:30 because we could get a booking later. But unbeknown to us they keep quite a few seats for walk ins so probablycould have just come later!
I had been looking forward to visiting Gunpowder as had heard great things from a friend.
When I had 3 overseas visitors here that like curry I thought it was a perfect opportunity.
Firstly it is very very small.
I arrived at 5.25 for a 5.30 booking and was told that it was not open yet (opens at 5.30) despite the neon lit up ‘open’ light above the front door. They also didn’t appear to have my booking built getting a table was easy.
The menu is very limited it is tapas style small plates but honestly I was disappointed with the choice. No naan or other bread whatsoever. The highlights were a duck pancake, egg masala curry and a beef dish. The chicken had little meat on and the lamb chops were nice but overpriced.
All in all it was ok but I would not return
Aloo chaat was terrific. So was the venison doughnut. Broccoli was just mediocre—pieces were unnecessarily big. And pork ribs were below mediocre.
Great space. Happy to support innovative thoughts on Indian food.
Great place!! The food is delicious and well presented. Just on the edge of the City, it’s just about manageable at lunchtime for a little time out. Staff are super welcoming and helpful with assistance with descriptions of the food and choice.
Gunpowder is a very intimate restaurant and has a cosy feel. There is a one page menu to select your food from, but it provides enough selection. The food comes out in little plates, so it's like tapas style dining. The food was delicious, the lamb chops are an absolute must! there was a lot of variety, you could have authentic style food or indian food with a bit of a twist. It's not the type of restaurant where you sit for hours, but they're certainly not rushing you out of the door.
We went for lunch. Be sure to make reservations.. it is VERY small. Although I hear there is one in central London that is larger. Everything was just perfect.SOOOO good! Just loved loved loved!!
Great food, tasty, different - well worth a visit. Small and noisy when it's full but a good atmosphere.
Amazing flavours! The venison donut is a must. The aloo chaat was surprisingly delicious and they elevate the humble potato to new heights!
Great service and food outstanding. Can’t wait to go back and sample more dishes from the menu!
Amazing dishes and not your typical curry meal. Exceptional spin on your favorite flavors but spun up with Kale, duck and other exceptional proteins and less carbs.
Tiny backstreet restaurant worth finding. Excellent food served as sharing dishes, fresh and innovative. If you're looking for a casual dining experience this is a great little restaurant, the only downside would be that the service was unfriendly.
I absolutely LOVE the food here. I am a foodie, and cook Indian food, but this is sublime. A bit noisy though.
It’s an amazing dining experience with good food and good service! Love this cute Indian restaurant.
Fantastic food, great service
