This was a really nice gastro pub with lovely service and staff. The food was sub standard and actually on par with a Wetherspoons. My curry was bland and tasteless and my partner’s award winning sausages were average. It was okay and we loved the ambience and staff, but the food was basic and could have been injected with flavour.
Lovely food, great service and excellent ambience. Highly recommended.
Very poor experience. First given a tiny cramped table that was difficult to get legs under as seats were too high. We asked to move when another table became free and were able to do so. Meals (Sunday roasts) took ages to come. Staff came in and out of the small room we were in - they would visit 2 of the 4 tables and ignore us, not even looking at us to make eye contact. In the end I had to raise my voice to get someone’s attention.
Food was disappointing- meat was ok but veg included tired carrots, yellowish broccoli and limp green beans. All warm rather than hot. Gravy was thin and greasy. Two pale and undercooked roast potatoes and a scoop of mash. Yorkshire pudding was good. Staff didn’t seem bothered about looking after guests. Asked if we wanted to order more drinks but the order never came and no staff came back into the room. Would not return.
Had booked well in advance for our anniversary when we arrived we were basically given a table in the bar which was not exactly socially distant.. we declined the table and was told we had to wait for another table.. so we left and went elsewhere.... what was the oont of booking..
Was not happy...
I booked for a table in the restaurant, we were initially sat at a high table & stools in the bar, there was a mix up. When we asked, we were moved to the restaurant where the atmosphere was much quieter, nice ambiance, staff efficient & friendly. The food was amazing, cooked perfectly. This made up for the earlier mix up. Would recommend eating here. Would definitely return.
Lovely table position and good service although no call back to check on food after it was served…
I would have sent my steak back as wasn’t cooked to what I asked and my friends meal was cooked with different beans than advertised , good job she liked them as again no one came to check if all was ok with the food. Same with the dessert, it wasn’t hot enough but no one to speak to until the table was cleared and then you feel awkward complaining if you have eaten most of it …. So we just said about the wrong beans and didn’t cause a fuss.
In the noise level there wasn’t a category for excellent music... really chilled vibe to eat along to...
will be back next time we’re in York..
Relaxed lunch with good food and friendly service
Friendly and professional staff. Nice and cozy atmosphere and very tasty food in affordable prices. I highly recommend it and definitely I would come back.
Fantastic old building with so much charm and character. Food yummy, fish finger sandwich massive
Dark and too warm, waitress looked like she didn’t want to be there. Pie goid but over priced
Good atmosphere, good was very good (I had the pie which was excellent and seemed to be very popular!)
Friendly and efficient staff
Lovely food and surroundings,a little more lighting would be better it was difficult to read the menu but overall definitely to be recommended
Lovely character dining room serving delicious well cooked and presented food. 2nd time here when passing through York. Not to be missed!
Food was very nice and service was excellent but overpriced for the environment
Very good but spoiled by a very loud tour guide on the next table. Had to leave as he was spoiling what we hoped would be a nice quiet meal
Fantastic, atmospheric, excellent ambience; staff obviously very well trained and all very pleasant - attentive but not too much. Famous pie lived up to expectations (perhaps a little more jus / gravy would be appropriate).
Will definitely return.
It was my aunt’s birthday and one of her colleagues recommended based off the conspirators menu. It wasn’t available because it was the weekend so we had the Sunday menu instead. We had the roast and it was so lovely. The food was cooked perfectly and just enough that I didn’t feel overwhelmed by the amount on the plate. The service was wonderful, really attentive but at the same time we had our own space. The dining room was nice as well because it wasn’t too crowded and I was really impressed by the covid measures that were in place. We both had a lovely time and left making plans to come back again as soon as possible. It was just such a happy and relaxed environment that I’d be just as happy to come back by myself and not feel out of place. With the lovely weather as well it was just such a treat. Definitely would recommend! :)
Overall the experience was ok. The steak pie was very nice but the waiting staff could do with being a little more attentive!
Fantastic all that we hoped for and more, food was brilliant and the gin and tonic of the day recommendation was spot on
Good drinks and food, plus well organised and a quick service.
almost £40 for two drinks and two chicken and chips left most of it half a plate of salad chips that were so thick they had a bitty texture the pan of garlic sauce looked horrible
Warm welcome, lovely seating area with attentive staff. Food was excellent, I had the black pudding scotch egg and the sausages and mash and my wife the BLT. No problems at all. Would revisit anytime.
Nice atmosphere, historic surroundings. The food was lovely.
Beautiful food, fantastic staff and wonderful surroundings 😍
The Bits n Bob’s starter was excellent, for mains we had a wonderful Barnsley lamb chop meal, and a fairly good steak pie which was let down a little by the pastry which was a little soft towards the filling (in our opinion) which stopped us giving full marks. Overall though very good and we will come here again if in the York area.
Friendly helpful staff and speedy service. Hard to social distance in an old pub, but COVID measures in place. However, food disappointing. Only 2 veggie options. I chose a chickpea curry and it was pretty tasteless. The chef can’t have tasted it. My husband had slow cooked pork. It was ok but nowhere near worth the £18 he paid for it. Felt like a bit of an rip off. Won’t go again.
Lovely lunch staff very kind and hardworking.
Really enjoyed our lunch in the patio garden in the sun. Lovely service all good wouldn’t hesitate to return!
Friendly staff , good food and nice atmosphere
Wonderful building, staff were all very friendly and efficient, we all enjoyed the food although, sadly, there were no pies left
Good atmosphere & music friendly staff food very good would definitely go again
Amazing food good service not the best seats but hay ho had the famous meat pie it was awesome!
Food is good and worth the price. Excellent hospitality x
In our opinion just a tourist trap, not interested in repeat custom and absolutely minute portions ( check out the photos and yes those plates haven’t been touched, exactly how they came out ). We paid £40 for the three course conspirators menus ( plus drinks ) and we both left very hungry, we both agreed the staff were friendly but what’s the point going for a meal if it leaves you hungry so we definitely wouldn’t recommend.
Our first visit and would certainly come again. We sat in a nice quiet room which had candles and a really nice atmosphere. We chose from the conspirators menu and it was lovely.
The staff were fantastic too - really made our night.
Fab food & great service. The signature pie was amazing!
A very nice meal with friendly service in a welcoming atmosphere. Good COVID precautions.
Having seen the inn on a tv program the food looked lovely so decided to book whilst visiting York for a couple of days. My husband had the pie which were supposed to be a specialty turned out to be disappointing with way too thick pastry. The drinks service was very slow with us and other tables waiting quite a while for drinks. There was water glasses on the table but at no point was water offered so what was the point. At the end of the meal (which I feel are over priced) we asked if we could move to a table outside we were told by the waitress that she didn’t know and to go and ask at the bar!!!! How’s about a bit of customer service and you go and ask for us !!! Needless to say we left instead. Wouldn’t recommend
after sitting in the courtyard watching the chef make pies we were told pie was off the menu. then another waitress took our order and i asked again about the pie. this time they were available. totally disorganised. took ages for our drinks to arrive too. pie was ok but i expected better. restaurant has a good ambience but needs a damn good dusting.
