hi great meal/experience and rating would have been better had they not run out of their signature dish pies
Lovely food, great table exactly what we needed! Table in the sun even though it was freezing outside!
Relaxing atmosphere excellent food and good value for money will be returning again soon.
The restaurant was small and quite cosy. The food we ordered was good, Fish and chips nicely cooked and cod chunk with risotto which was also nicely cooked and presented. The dessert menu was fair, the sticky toffee pudding though OK would have been nicer with either fresh cream or custard in place of the serving of ice cream. The cheese selection was excellent with a good varied portion to finish off a lovely meal. All in all a nice restaurant in a good pub with friendly and attentive staff. Would recommend and definitely return.
Everything was fine, with a great atmosphere. Food was really nice, and a good selection of ales. We'll worth a visit.
Fantastic food, great atmosphere, would definitely recommend!
Lovely old pub near to the Minster, thought the roast dinner was excellent value for the money. Good selection of beers. Service was good.
Went for a meal here on a Saturday Evening. We booked a table for 8:30 and arrived early to had a drink in the bar area first. It was nicely decorated and nice to sit for a chat. At 8:30 we moved through to the dining area which isn’t too big but felt spacious. We got some appetisers which were very tasty and when the mains arrived these were a good size portion and the food was of a high quality. I would highly recommend the Guy Fawkes Inn.
I love this pub. It's so cosy and when I went it was snowing - there was nowhere more perfect to be! The food is fantastic- you've got to have the pie - it's something else. My friend from London had the burger which was delicious but is still texting daily to say "I should have had the pie!"
Went for a romantic meal and thoroughly enjoyed both the food and the service. Well cooked, tasty and fresh. Would definitely recommend.
Meal with friends to celebrate a Big Birthday, service good food very tasty will definitely come again.
Great beer and the best steak pie in the country! And the icing on the cake is friendly staff
Stayed the night here, lovely room, breakfast and evening meal were extremely good, lovely friendly and helpful staff would definitely stay here again and recommend to a friend
We had a lovely evening. The food was tasty with good portions for 2 hungry diners. Service was friendly, efficient but not intrusive. We have been here several times and will definitely be back. Thank you.
Well, what a pleasant surprise this was. Booked for valentine's dinner as some reviews spoke of gaslights and candles (true, but all electric), but we've never been here before. All the staff were very pleasant and responded quickly to requests for more drinks etc. The food was really good too. My wife's fish was superb and HUGE! My burger was very tasty and HUGE! The chips were homemade and DELICIOUS! And then, as if we were not full enough, we ordered sticky toffee pudding which was TREMENDOUS!! (and huge). OK, so none of this was healthy stuff, but they do have lighter things too, we just ate what we really fancied for a change. And the price was reasonable too. Oh, the ambiance rating is one star down as there was a draught from a window that would not close properly. So that is my exclamation-mark laden review, with added capitalisation for sensationalists. If you want not too fancy but really good grub in York, this is a great place to get it.
Excellent food, quick service and very helpful staff
Very nice meal. Had lamb shank which fell off the bone.
Went last Tuesday for my birthday as we had been on previous visits to York and really enjoyed it. Menu had changed so unable to have our favourite (pork three ways) but we still found we had a good choice of other options. Was initially sat at the end of the room, felt it was a little dark so asked to move which was granted without any hassle. Overall a good experience and would still recommend. Good pub menu with a touch of extra effort and thought. Will return !
Booked here for my birthday as we were in York for a long weekend, arrived a bit earlier than booked but no problem, we were shown to our table. The restaurant room was supposed to be gas lit, which it was but not totally, a few of the trendy light bulbs have sneaked in but it still has great atmosphere. I ordered chicken which came with great chips and a blue cheese sauce, my wife went for the PIE.....yes it was huge but she says very tasty. We had a bottle of wine and the overall cost was around £50 which was well worth it. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for good honest food served in a great atmosphere by great staff.
We have been here a few times and are never disappointed. The atmosphere is good, the food is superb. Cannot fault anything. Would recommend for either lunch or evening meal
The best pie ever! Wonderful place for location, food, wine and atmosphere. We'll definitely book a table next time we visit York.
Brought my Brother there who was visiting from Singapore. Lovely experience great food. Excellent service
Sorry for this review..I like the idea of Guy Dawns and candlelight..but the food I tried to order the bits and bobs platter priced at £14.99 was not what the staff member gave me. He came back to me and said I had to select 3 items for £10...that ended up being a small pot of humour ( tasteless), olives (not pitted and bland), oil ( not extra virgin so again bland ), small pot of chorizo and r very small rolls that went hard as they cooled so not sure if they had been microwaved to heat them up.
very quaint and cosy atmosphere. Food was really good and staff very friendly and helpful. Easy to spend an evening there and chat away with the food and drink they serve up.
I love the relaxed feel of this place. My partner had the 10oz Sirloin steak and said it is the best steak he has had in a while, I had the Garlic and Thyme chicken which was lovely. The onion rings are a must as a side dish! Service was well-timed and friendly, wines were affordable.
We ate and stayed the night. Great staff and loads of character.
Great food warm and friendly staff and very reasonably priced
Friendly staff, excellent food, couldn’t ask for anything more.
Excellent location, staff excellent very polite. The place is quirky a "must try"
Delicious food with excellent service. Staff where friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend
This was our second visit to the restaurant. We had a seat towards the back as there is a partition that makes it easier for me to hear my companions. I chose the sausages and mash with a side order of root vegetables & my friend had the mushroom risotto. The sausages were OK, though the skin was a little chewy. However, my dessert - sticky toffee pudding - was absolutely divine. The bill (2 mains, 2 desserts came to just under £50 and included 2 small glasses of wine.
The waitress was very friendly and efficient without being OTT.
I'd recommend Guy Fawkes Inn for its varied menu. However, it's quite dark inside - purposely, I presume, to give it the Guy Fawkes atmosphere - and the loos could do with upgrading.
A bit disappointing, it seems like they’re relying on the fact that it’s Guy Fawkes ‘ birthplace and don’t seem to be trying too hard. Despite the fact it was Sunday night and we’d gone for dinner, the only menu available was the Sunday lunch menu. The waiter was the chap who’d been behind the bar and was in a T shirt, hoodie and jeans and despite the fact he was young enough to be my grandson, kept calling us ‘guys’. The food was average, ambience not good. The walls and ceiling looked like there had recently been a fire and the lighting was far too dim. The waiter disappeared after the main course and nobody came to ask us about dessert. After half an hour, I went to the bar and the barman asked me if I’d seen the waiter anywhere!!! I’m not usually given to disparaging comments, but I expected this experience to be so much more. Won’t be going back.
Quite simply the best pie I have ever had. The other items on the menu look delicious too but I can’t say as I only ever have the pie. It is just so good. If you do choose to have the pie do not have a starter!
Guy Fawkes is one of our favourite venues for Sunday lunch. The quality of the service and the food is always high and it's great for a vegetarian friendly Sunday lunch.
Great food and service, lovely atmosphere. Really enjoyed our lunch- thank you!
Pleased to have discovered this bar and restaurant. Happy to recommend. The food was excellent.
Usual great experience. Conspirator menu pre-6pm great value.
the food was really nice. I had a lamb shank which was done to perfection and my wife had bangers and mash which she really enjoyed as well. because the dining area was right next to the bar it was quite loud and rowdy so not a place for a quiet meal, and it's quite small as well. we went for a 20th wedding anniversary meal and we were staying at the Inn as well. there's a nice log fire to keep you warm in the cold winter nights. the staff are very friendly and can't do enough for you. the prices are reasonable as well. I wouldn't recommend it for a romantic meal but for a general meal before a few drinks you can't go wrong.
Had lots of meals here in the past. Only went for the steak pie to see if it was the same quality as before, none left, as all meals used to be exceptional, we thought the food was average.
This is an atmospheric historical Inn that is just fabulous. The building is old and quirky. The food is great and menu interesting. Roast dinner on Sunday lunch was great and plenty of it. We went two lunchtimes whilst staying in York and never had room for desert! The staff are attentive, friendly and helpful - also knowledgeable about their menu and drinks. Had great local gins - rhubarb gin and ginger ale was lovely!
You do need to book as this is a very popular place and for good reasons. The bar is always full and vibrant too.
