Portion sizes very generous, beautiful food. Ended our holiday on a high.
A well organised establishment with very friendly staff and super food
Looks lovely from the outside. We sat in the garden 2 nights in a row due to convenience of camping and nowhere else to walk to. Tables set apart well. The specials menu was the exact same each night, even though the date had been changed. Chips are frozen ones. The steak at £25 was poorly prepared, chewy even though it was medium rare, it hadn’t been left to rest. The outdoor toilets were terrible. Why this pub hasn’t sorted this out over lockdown is questionable. The toilets are in a small bed sit room, walls are grubby, chairs piled on top of the bed, paper that people had used was piled up behind the toilet, everywhere was grubby. Considering we are still within the coronavirus pandemic I’d have expected better. The only bonus was the ‘Eat out to help out’ scheme, I seriously wouldn’t pay full price!
We had to wait over an hour for food and were expected to pay before our food had arrived . Not overly busy so don’t know why there was such a delay. Very disappointing.
If it was not for the one gentleman who checked in on us we would have thought we had been forgotten! The wait was horrendous! We had booked a table for 5:15 but waited one hour and 45 mins for our main meal!
As it happened the food was lovely which made up for it slightly.
We weren't given the specials menu until we asked for the dessert menu, only empty tables being cleared, dessert menu not offered, when we asked to order dessert we were told that someone would come. 20mins later and still no one. Huge table of dirty plates and cutlery right next to us, drinks took ages to be served, workers seemed more interested at looking at their phones or flirting with eachother.
I have no idea why I could not use my Shareholder discount voucher, just because the government scheme was in operation? They said the till would not allow it!?!? What a total joke. Well done Greene King
Chosen due to location but food was lovely and the service was good. Well cooked pub food and full of flavour. We had the steak pie, chickpea curry, fruit crumble and Eton mess and would recommend them all. Large portion sizes.
Food was mediocre, ambience and atmosphere was understandably dull due to covid. Main reason for low score was how shockingly poor the effort was to ensure staff did not come into contact with customers and kept risk of infection as low as possible.
The pub had a one way system- which the staff did not adhere to, they also leant over us whilst serving, and to my horror, handed our glasses to us by the rim of the glass! Everywhere else we have dined, the customers (as annoying as it is for us) have to take the glasses from the tray which would be placed on a table, this not only prevents servers from being too close and leaning over, but also minimises risk of infection from the handling of the glass, especially at the rim!
The staff at this pub were also moaning, complaining and in seriously foul moods behind the bar. Our table was situated right next to a little window between the bar and the restaurant/room, we could hear and sense the frustrations and complaints from the employees. Not very professional and does not make for a nice dining experience. No one asked if we wanted condiments, checked how satisfied we were with the meals and we also had to chase for the bill, twice. Will not be coming back again, nor will i recommend during these difficult times.
Excellent Sunday lunch as always.
The cutlery needs upgrading though as it was of poor quality.
Eaten here before in previous years and on this experience they’ve raised their game even higher and during Covid too! We had a whitebait to share as a starter, then two massive pieces of fish in saffron batter for my wife and I had steak n ale pie with shortcrust pastry and mash. Both were de-lic-ious and such generous portions! We sat outside, had prompt and friendly staff with loads of visible sanitising stations and cleaning by staff. We will return again in September!! Hint for other holiday makers- get the bus from Swanage/Corfe or Wareham as the bus stop (both directions) is right outside the pub and runs till after 11pm every day so the chance not to drive and have one or two 🍺🍷!!
When we arrived our table for two was situated right by the bar and in very close proximity to a table of 6 people. We were almost rubbing shoulders! We were not happy with this as it was clearly not in line with Government guidelines. This was a bad start, however, after complaining to the waitress she duly sorted out a more suitable arrangement for us. The service from her was superb, and an enjoyable meal was had. Good food, fast service Great waitress and a friendly atmosphere.
Many times weve wanted to visit here but it's always been full, so I got organised and pre booked, sadly it lacks any kind of atmosphere and although the food was ok it is over priced for what it was
Excellent location, friendly staff, beautiful food, value for money, really easy to book online. Highly recommend a visit
The food was fine, but we had to wait 50 minutes between our starters and mains. We had our 5 year old granddaughter with us which made the long wait really awkward. We think our order had been forgotten.
My Open Table booking was adhered to and I was given the choice of indoor or outdoor. All tables were suitably distanced and the indoor was properly taped out to ensure a one way system was employed.
The toilets were very clean, although not many for the number of customers. There is Single Family Occupancy, but it should be noted children don't read signs, so I did have to dodge a small girl who came in anyway.
The service was friendly, lots of lovely servers who were very considerate.
Hands free payment and a one way system exit continued to provide assurance.
Well done, I'll be back.
Food was awful as pasta over cooked and tasteless. Expensive for what was on offer.
Really lovely food and atmosphere , good social distancing in place
Good choice of food, good service large carpark and traditional style thatch pub. Definitely recommend.
When our order arrived we were suprised to find the chip's came ready salted. As one of our party does not take salt on anything, this was in danger of ruining there meal. We complained about the chip's and they were replaced with chip's without salt.
We were told that it was the pub's policy to salt the chip's, but surely this is an individuals choice to have salt on your meal, would hope that they don't do this to children's meals.
Know where on their menu did it advise that chips came ready salted.
Limited menu and over priced for the food that was provided. Waitress took order and my partners meal was not put through to the kitchen which then spoiled our meal overall as we did not want to wait another half hour for the meal to come out, when myself and children had already eaten.
Poor service overall.
We booked four tables (14 people) as we were staying at Swanage. We have been here many times before and always received excellent service and delicious food.
My son arrived first with his table of 4 and ordered four roast dinners. Ten minutes later the rest of us arrived and wanted to order roast meals too. We were told there was only nut roast left. We then ordered two steak and ale pies and two steaks along with other dishes. The waitress returned with the news that there was only one steak left and the pie was steak and kidney not ale. Once again we changed our orders and waited for our meals. When the pies were delivered they were in fact steak and ale not kidney as we had been told. I had the pie and it was indeed very delicious. My sons table had roast pork. He said the pork was very dry but because of the other meal changes he really couldn’t be bothered to complain so left over half of his meal. Usually we would have ordered desserts and more drinks but to be truthful we couldn’t wait to get out of the restaurant.
We were very disappointed with our visit this time, as I said we have eaten here on quite a few occasions. We understand and accept the menu is a lot smaller than usual because of COVID-19 restrictions and we couldn’t fault the Inns social distancing plans. We booked these tables at least a week before so they knew the numbers of guests they were dealing with.
We are visiting Swanage again in a few weeks and are in two minds as to whether we visit the Halfway Inn again.
Service shocking! 30 minutes before our order was taken, 45 minutes later starters arrived still no drinks! Drinks finally arrived after mains then interrupted half way through our meal asking for payment! Real shame as the food wasn’t bad
Nice pub with good food. Slightly expensive, but we were staying just down the road in a campsite so it was really convenient! The girl who served us was really lovely and smiley, it really made our evening.
Food everything was fine to eat, to criticise slightly comments from the table were I ordered chips not mash, chips were slightly undercooked, what’s the point of crushed peas, so you can’t please everybody. Fish was very good as was pie and burger.
Lovely meal food was great; only small niggle is as we booked online as a family of 5 we were put in the garden room which became apparent was for families with small children. As my children are all teenage/twenties we felt a bit out of place. Apart from this the food was delicious, the staff were great and no we didn’t ask to move into the bar area we just sat and ate amongst the young children!!
We are regular users of the Halfway House while on holiday usually for all June.
We came over to Swanage for the day as caravan sites weren’t open as normal. We took 2 friends to our favourite pub HWH for a meal and although the environment was excellent for the current situation the prices were much higher than usual .
£14.00 for a burger is far too much.
I realise that you can only take half the custom and need to keep the business in profit if possible.
Nachos starter appalling quality and not value for money. Main course satisfactory but very expensive.
I’m sorry I was disappointed. We always visit halfway house when we come down to Swanage and I was looking forward to the lovely lasagne. Sadly this is no longer on the menu. The only dish that appealed to me was the gourmet burger. This was ok but it did not come with any salad and a minute cup of coleslaw. At £16.95 it was very poor value. I would have expected a nice steak for that! My 90 year old parents had a reduced size scampi meal and that was £12.95! Hate to think what the full size meal cost. We have visited halfway house over last 30 to 40 years. I can’t see us visiting for an evening meal in the future.
Food was outstanding as always. Put in garden room on our own. No ambience, servers seem to forget we were there. Starter of whitebait came with tiny serving of tartare sauce, no one came to check it was ok, had to find staff to ask for more. Dessert took 45 minutes to come, not one member of staff came to garden room in that time, had to enter bar against rules to ask. Accept that it takes time to get service back to normal after last few months and really ok with that, but there was no real apology and having been so excited to go back to one of our favourite pubs we were very disappointed. We have been out to eat several times in last two weeks since restaurants opened, there have always been issues, which has not been an issue at all - but this was the only time we have left disappointed with the service
Great service food was ok for the value.
Good food, excellent service, pleasant and helpful staff, pleasant surroundings. We would recommend the Halfway Inn to our friends.
My first trip out after lockdown and it was fantastic. Thank you for a lovely meal, fast service and felt safe in the current situation.
The burger was £16 and I did think that was expensive but it was very nice so happy to have paid it.
Would go again!
Service was very good and the social distancing measures in place are well organised. Food was quick and tasty.
Staff very polite, good a cleaning regards COVID rules. Didn’t have to wait long for food. Would stop again.
First time out after lockdown and we certainly enjoyed it. Food in general was good and all of it was piping hot. Only negative was that food seemed fairly expensive.
Service was slow , ordered the sweet potato curry, tasted good, disappointed with the amout you got and the way it was served, in a bowl with a poppadom stuck on top, not worth the money at all.
Our first visit to a pub and meal out since lockdown. I felt very comfortable and safe, appreciated the fresh air although I don't know how that will work come the winter. Food and service excellent and a good pint.
We come on holiday every year to Swanage and always stop of at halfway inn food and service are always very good highly recommend
This pub is one of those places where the owner just assumes noone will come back for a repeat visit, so why bother? And they are right; you really wouldn't go back. Over-priced food and no decent beer on draft (unless you count a syrupy Badger ale). £15 for basic fish and chips, with the chips of the frozen variety. Nachos £8 as a starter, but with barely any cheese, no guacamole and about 12 tortilla chips in a small bowl. Just awful. Please avoid. Real shame as lovely building albeit on an A-road.
