Our beautiful, contemporary building has to be seen to be believed. We've combined modern construction methods with traditional materials and techniques; using classic, natural materials such as traditional pub decor and oak floorboards. The result is a quirky and quintessentially British venue with a twist.
Unfortunately we are unable to accept online table bookings for our outdoor tables.
Why not treat the real ale lover in your life with our Countryside Sett Gift Box, 12 Bottles of Badger Ale in a beautiful display box. Available to order now in house.
Sunday: 12pm - 7pm
Booked for my daughters birthday and asked if they could do a special pudding on my message. Nobody bothered. Waitress was pleasant but got our order wrong twice. Nice venue though and food was superb and not overpriced.
Food was delicious - I had fish and chips. Fantastically cooked-however quite a small portion for £13, very few chips. The other disappointment was that there were only 2 roasts left when we arrived at 4pm, so don’t expect to be able to have a roast later on a Sunday afternoon. Very friendly and helpful staff.
Had heard a lot about the pub so was really looking forward to it.
Not the greatest start waiting over 5 minutes to be served then being charged £12.20 for 2 pints of ale and a coke in the bar beforehand !
[How do these places justify charging £4.80 a pint ?!]
Restaurant welcome and service was very good but felt the food - like the drinks - was overpriced
Over £7 for a Venison pate starter with "Malted Sourdough bread" which turned about to be 2 x half slices of the hardest, driest bread I've ever had.
Our burgers were good but not worth the money.
The dessert made up for it a little - mainly due to is size.
Overall - take away the restaurant service element - and it was a very disappointing, very expensive, meal.
Wouldn't recommend, and won't be back !
Overcooked, dry sirloin is not a good Sunday Lunch experience, "tired" lamb shank was equally disappointing. Although we arrived at the beginning of service the food gave the impression of having been prepared well in advance and not freshly prepared.
The ambience is pleasant and the staff cheerful.
Really lovely food at Hall & Woodhouse with great service. Well worth a drive out to Portishead to dine here, very enjoyable evening to celebrate a special birthday.
Great place, good, varied menu and very good service from the staff
However our food did take a long time to arrive.
Excellent food and service, little noisy on the music but otherwise a great experience!
Tables were too close together for a Valentines evening, the pastry on the lemon tart was awful, and the waitresses were constantly at the wrong table. Starters and mains were excellent, staff friendly, the concept of the evening was excellent and a decent price.
Waited over an hour for our Sunday roast! When it arrived dad’s was cold, mine and mums had hardly any pork, mainly fat! Kids were fine though. Staff were lovely though and gave a sizeable discount for our poor experience. Had the rugby on the tv and said hadn’t expected it to be so busy....really!!
We had booked to have a nice family Sunday lunch to celebrate a birthday. We did ask a couple of times for a highchair although we had requested one in our booking notes & in the end had to get one ourselves. We didn’t know the live rugby would be screened, it was very loud but staff did turn it down each time we asked. Otherwise the food was very delicious, particularly the chocolate brownies which were worth the visit by themselves, the staff were very friendly and it was lovely & light with a nice view. We will definitely visit again but just check there’s no live sport first!
Food quality, service ok lots of staff but new and young and left dirty dishes for ages but i will defo be back decor amazing 👍
Great night out with friends, good food, lovely view of the mariner
We were very disappointed. Booked for my daughters bitprthday on Sunday 6.30, & waiter confirmed when we sat down roasts were still available only to return ten minutes later after we had all decided to go for a roast, there were none left. We ordered Pigs in Blankets as side order, then told they didn't have any, then came back again to say "they had found some".
Only 3 tables occupied in restaurant, but had to chase up desserts after 30 mins & again chase up to get the bill. There are too many better options in Portishead to eat, so we would only go back for drinks.
Went here with my dad for Sunday roast. Ordered roast beef but was brought pork. Waitress Kelly rectified this in a quick professional way and compensated us. We had the cauliflower cheese too as a side. You get unlimited Yorkshire’s and gravy. Yorkshire’s were big!. Overall a great experience lovely meal and I will be revisiting shortly.well done
Our server Mary and the rest of the team were on it! They recommended dishes to us and they were amazing! Especially the cod risotto!! The atmosphere was lovely, buzzing yet cosy in the upstairs restaurant! It was good value, tasty and well worth the wait for apple turnover made from scratch! We’ll be back! Loved it and highly recommend!
Great night out - service and food was excellent - would recommend
Booked for the festive menu for the company Christmas lunch. There had been a problem with supplying the menu but Kelly Robinson, the Deputy General Manager took charge and gave us all a wonderful lunch on extremely generous terms. The food was great and the service excellent. Although initially disappointed with the menu problem, Kelly and her chefs certainly pulled out all the stops to give us an afternoon to remember!
I shall certainly be visiting H & W again.
I could not recommend this place. Very average overpriced food. Service quite good.
The lemon tart tasted musty. The sour dough with the smoked salmon had been toasted but came with no butter.
Fish and chips was average not sure what fish it was. It tasted quite oily.
Not good, upstairs restaurant virtually empty st 3 pm on Sunday but still managed to bring us the wrong food. When our order eventually arrived the food was cold and we had to chase up the side of cauliflower cheese which arrived when we had nearly finished eating but wish it hadn't, worst cauliflower cheese we have ever tasted, the sauce was runny and the dish was cold, no red cabbage on two of the plates and one of the pork meals was just fat. Even though we complained and did get some money off, would I go back at nearly £14 for a Sunday roast....not a chance!
waiter was very helpful and great service provided, wasn't sure about the menu changes but food was good so overall enjoyed
Food was great. Service very slow with lots of waitresses just standing chatting.
The food was excellent (we had a Sunday roast)
However it was cold when it first arrived and had been sat waiting to I be served so long that the gravy had solidified. Unfortunately we also had the very unpleasant experience of sitting near the kitchen hatch, when the waiter took out food back the chef was so rude to the poor man that we actually heard him say he can't do this anymore and he left.
So poor service and overly rude chef did spoil the entire lunch.
Shame they had run out of several dishes even though we were eating very early in the evening - 7pm and my friends steak was very fatty. Staff were lovely and helpful - and it was cold despite staff turning down the air con. Second poor experience so may not go back. Shame no response to comments i make via this link.
Service was very slow despite the restaurant being mostly empty. The menu was limited with the only vegetarian option 'ratatouille' was off the menu and no other veg option was offered. Dessert was ordered but didn't appear until was asked for it some 20 mins later. Lots of staff seemed to be around but no one really seemed to be actually serving! We were offered 15% off the bill. Food was average - pub grub rather than restaurant standard.
This restaurant has gone downhill over the last few years and I go regularly, as it is on my doorstep.
The last time I ate there was around 12 months ago. At that time the food was shocking and the staff not very welcoming, to say the least.
I had decided never to eat there again.
However, I had a £50 voucher so gave it another chance. The 2 ladies that served us were full of smiles and made the lack of atmosphere more bearable.
The food, that we chose, was actually very good and way better than before.
So yeh, not bad !!
Still no way it would get my recommendation though.
The whole place needs a proper makeover, a manager that can spot problems and staff that are afforded time to make the customer feel welcome.
Staff very helpful - serviced with a smile :)
We ordered from the £10.95 options. Very pleased with the service. Will come again.
My wife and I both had the beef Sunday Roast. The beef was okay though not plentiful, vegetables weren't in plentiful supply and the roast potatoes were very poorly 'roasted'. More like boiled with a touch of colour. The sweets also didn't hit the spot the Eaton Mess was definitely not messy and was mostly meringue and squirty cream with a touch of strawberry.
Having travelled from Cardiff to meet with friends it was all a bit underwhelming really and we didn't consider it to be good value for money.
Long wait for food (40 minutes) even though the restaurant wasn't busy- when it arrived it wasn't what we'd asked for so there was another delay with no apology. Waitress kept forgetting things we'd asked for and forgot to uncork the wine for us.
We came here for brunch my Mum's birthday. We received a warm hello from staff when we arrived but were then pretty much left to it. I had to come up to the bar after waiting for a while to ask them whether anyone would be coming over - I was then informed I needed to order at the bar. That wasn't a problem, but it would have been nice to have been told as we arrived, rather than after waiting for a while. There was also no drinks menu. Everything aside from those two minor points was really great, the food was lovely and the waiter was friendly. The ambience and decor was really lovely and a winning point.
Perfect every time I have been A favourite with our family
Have avoided the restaurant for about a year following an unpleasant meal we thought we would try it again as it's our local. Unfortunately this time although the food was better, the service was awful. We had to search for staff to order our meal which then took a very long time to arrive - we finished our drinks halfway through our meal and couldn't find anyone to reorder more. This was a special occasion for us, so we were really dissapointed. To finish it off we went downstairs to order a cocktail and after 20minutes went to find out where they were and they had been forgotten. We were thinking of going there for our Christmas family meal but after this experience I think we shall avoid! Such a shame as it has so much potential.
The staff went above and beyond to look after us and were really good with the children too. Great team, good food!
Thoroughly enjoyed our meal and a lovely view of the harbour from our table. Staff were attentive and friendly
Excellent food and a fantastic environment.
Professional and curteous server.
Always have an excellent meal here and the staff make you feel so welcome
Super meal in one of the private dining containers - menu was fabulous, each of us chose different dishes and none of us were disappointed. Occasionally challenging to have a conversation due to the noise (screaming children...) coming up from the downstairs bar but when the children went home and we could hear the evenings live entertainment just enough to be background noise to our meal it was rather nice! Definitely recommend. Service was great too.
Very nice but over priced. Service could be quicker.
Food was great, very pleased however this placed was so understaffed it was ridiculous. The wait for food was terrible, and even worse for a drink.
I visited for Sunday lunch. I enjoyed the ambience and views from the large upstairs windows and then service was excellent.
We were disappointed to find 2/5 starters were unavailable, leaving mainly fish dishes which none of us like, so we passed on that course.
Two of us ordered the roast lunch, which was very tasty and reasonable value for the portion size. The thick slices of beef and gravy were delicious.
My dad ordered the Caesar salad which was a very disappointing size and not easily recognisable as a Caesar salad, and without a bowl of chips would have left him pretty peckish.
Desserts were good (ice cream and Eton mess) but not exceptional.
Overall we had a pleasant experience and the roast dinners were good enough that we will go back to try other dishes on the menu.
