The Churchill Arms is a village pub, with a relaxed atmosphere and the staff have a friendly attitude. Most of our pub classics are home-made using local ingredients where ever possible. Families, wellies and dogs with well-behaved owners are all most welcome.
For food and wine lovers, our style of cuisine is Classical British/French Gourmand cooking,no molecular,squiggles,foams or smears on the plates here.We cook in the old style,using the plancha & ovens,not sousvide & cook in the bag Each dish is cooked personally for you by Mike & his team. Every ingredient is treated with the utmost respect, using exact technique where balance,texture and depth of flavour are all important.Everything is made in the kitchen including daily baked bread he menu is firmly based on the best local produce which we are lucky to have in abundance throughout the seasons. There is a cosy bar with an open log fire place, and the 100 bin wine list reflects some of the worlds best wine makers as well as some of the less well known ones. Past visitors have included Prince Andrew, Murray Walker, John Cleese, Madonna, the late Sir Edward Heath, Michael Portillo, Status Quo and many other well known personalities.
The Rose and Thistle, built around 1580, was originally 3 cottages and became a bakers which then later started to retail liquor. The first listed landlord was Richard Pope in the early 1890’s whose photo can still be found on the gentleman’s toilet door. The pub has had several colourful landlords over the years one of whom is rumoured to still haunt the building. In the 1970’s the place was made famous for its seafood by Pete and Pam Reid and people flocked from all around to taste the lobster. A consortium of villagers then purchased the pub who later sold to Tim Norfolk all who maintained the places great reputation for food over the last 20 years. Tim retired in June 2008 when Kerry arrived, taking the pub from strength to strength. In late 2014 Chris took over the reins, with his friendly attitude and fantastic team you can always be guaranteed a warm welcome and delicious freshly prepared food.
