The food was nice although my partner had to send his back so we ate at different times. The service was not good at all though. Charged me different prices for the same drinks claiming they ran out of the one I had and replaced it with one £2.50 more expensive without mentioning it.
the breakfast food had ran out so waiting around for it to be replaced. Table hadn't been cleaned neither.
Great family meal to celebrate a birthday. Food very good and staff could not do enough for us. We were not rushed and the kitchen produced special dessert with no notice. We will be back.
The Beef was melt in the mouth & the gravy delicious - could have done with being a bit hotter & there was a very long time between courses.
Although food was good they are very disorganised with very slow service for drinks. I tried to ring them prior to our booking to confirm something I left 2 messages and no one returned my call. We were told cocktails were included in our afternoon tea, then told they were not. We could have had 4 x afternoon tea for £0 which the bill showed. I did question it & it was corrected. Good leadership required.
Staff very friendly.
Staff couldn't do enough for us.
My 5 & 6 year old were entertained with colouring pencils & puzzles.
Great Mother's Day.
Fantastic service, brilliant staff and beautiful setting. Easy access to hotel from car park (no hill trekking for us). Will definately be back again soon!
Great overall experience, food was excellent and filling even though it looked small on the plate , pudding was Devine x
Wonderful afternoon tea - my mother and me really enjoyed our time here.
Service was excellent - especially the manageress.
I’d definitely come back
Not a particularly special valentines meal. Starters ( Black pudding non bins and Duck breast) were good and served reasonably quickly but service and quality rapidly went downhill after that. Had to wait over 45 mins for a main course.. told it was on its way and was backed up because of room service orders! Ten minutes later still no mains (Beef and Reef and a rump steak). Everyone else who came in after us had been served so we'd blatantly been forgotten about. Food when it arrived was ok but not fantastic for the price being charged. Food arrived too late for us to enjoy a dessert. Spoiled a potentially good valentines night out
A very enjoyable evening. Service and food was good.
The food was nice but not as warm as it should have been so we had to bring it to the attention of the manager who was very apologetic and was very professional, she deducted desserts off the bill and shouted us a round of drinks. I think the issue is it’s a bit out the way so it lacks some atmosphere. I would make a return visit, however it’s not the best I’ve ever had but it’s definitely not the worst.
Very disappointing visit, we waited over 15 mins for our drinks to arrive and another 15 mins for the starter. The second drinks order was wrong. We did not have time for the main course as we had an event to attend. We were in the Hawthorns for over an hour an were only served a starter. However the maitre d’ was attentive and apologetic and offered recompense. The starter was very good but we will not be returning or recommending
Celebrated our anniversary at Hawthorns. Ambience very nice and relaxed as were the staff, who were very friendly and chatty. Food was very good, although I wasn't fussy about some combinations of flavours or textures on my main course. We were delighted when our waiter presented us with a plate with Happy Anniversary written on it accompanied by some very tasty sweet treats and two unexpected celebratory glasses of prosecco. After the meal we were invited to either but take coffee in the lounge seats or stay at our table. All in all a very pleasant evening and glad we had our any anniversary meal there.
Great customer service, amazing meals for the price and great place just to switch off after a hard days work. As was staying in the Crown Plaza which it is set in. Thank you!!
Our table was ready when we arrived. We peruse menu and ordered drinks which came quickly. We then ordered our food which was excellent. Staff were courteous, attentive and helpful.
Excellent service and great value meal as was restaurant week. Would definite recommend.
Great locally sourced food, great service and a great choice of gins and beers. Well worth a visit. Whilst not tried, I have seen the afternoon teas and they look like they are to die for.
Food was fab and the staff were so friendly .
Food (GOOD)... How ever the portion was absolutely terrible,I’m not a big eater but the portion size was parity small indeed Also the pudding so small in portion size. Not a place to go if your hungry 😩
Not more than ok, the presentation on the plates were the best thing about it.
Medium taste at a medium price.
We had an excellent welcome at Hawthorns. I find the staff there just the right balance between friendly and attentive/formal. Food was also excellent and imaginative. One of my favourite restaurants in Newcastle. Great ambience in the restaurant, modern but not spartan.
Food was amazing along with the extremely friendly and helpful staff
Had an amazing experience at hawthorns, the food was delicious and the staff were amazing. I was dining with my mother who didn't realise there was strawberries on her desert, which she is allergic to, and they were quick to accommodate it. This was greatly appreciated! Overall, had a brilliant night and would go again.
I tried Hawthorns during Restaurant Week. The food was good and the service was average, however nothing outstanding. Based on the price tag and the reputation of this restaurant, I would have expected an overall better experience.
Although food good , and staff pleasant, service was very slow. We asked for aperitif drinks which didn’t arrive for 40 mins and then meal late also. We were going to concert venue so couldn’t wait to enjoy full meal even though went early
Disappointed as booked this judges on previous reviews and menu featured when booking.
The reality was a very limited menu not at all as featured
Service extremely slow, although it wasn’t busy. Only serving bar menu or afternoon tea, so opted for afternoon tea, at £19.95 per person. Food was very disappointing, bread was dry, scones where soggy, deserts weren’t as described on menu. Cream was curdled on one desert. We weren’t offered more tea or coffee, took ages to get bill then had to wait another 10 mins for card machine as it was being used for room service. Spent over £75 and would not recommend at all.
Sadly, it was really disappointing. First, we were told there was no table for us, even though I have booked well in advance. One girl went to speak to a manager to then explain that we would have to wait for a table as they had a party of 60 in. After them faffing around for about half an hour, we finally sat down at our table. Waited an hour for an afternoon tea. Not even that good.
The only positive was the deducted the final bill, due to such an embarrassment on their behalf, but I will never be back.
Very enjoyable meal. We were very hungry from running the great north run and it was just what we needed.
Fast efficient service, very tasty food, super drinks menu and we very much appreciated the free lemonade bar and pasta party. Good portions and a good choice on offer. you will definitely see us next year.
We expected small portions due to the nature of the restaurant. However I was not expecting the portions to be as small - consequently after 3 courses we left hungry. I don't mind small courses if the food is 'special' - however I can't say it was; Of the 7 "twice cooked" chips with my steak - 3 were cooked lovely, 3 had uncooked sections and one was raw! We also ordered medium lamb - it came out rare - we mentioned this to our waiter (who was lovely) and he said "oh the chef likes it rare"...so why ask us how we want the meat cooking if we get what the chef prefers? Overall the staff were really nice, food distinctly average, portion size tiny. Will not be visiting again!
Tasty food but could have done with more seasoning
The restaurant seemed unprepared for restaurant week, with few staff and chaotic organisation. We waited 40 minutes for drinks, had to ask for bread twice, starters took 45 minutes, mains a further hour. The food itself was ok, nothing special. We saw other diners leave because their food hadn't arrived after a long time, others refused to pay for or eat their mains as it was so long after their starters. Wasted opportunity to introduce people to this restaurant. We would not return.
We have eaten in this restaurant before and although service has never been the fastest, on this occasion it was ridiculous. I know it was restaurant week however if the kitchen couldn't cope with the number of bookings then the restaurant/hotel should have employed temps or taken less bookings. Basically we sat down at 7:25 and by 9:10 we had only had our starter, our drinks were missed off the order so when the starter arrived, we had to ask where our drinks were. After getting and finishing our starter at 8:00 we waited and waited for our main, my husband went to the bar and got our own drinks as no one had been to see if we needed any for more - so after 30 mins it was quicker to go through to the bar. Just before 8:50 we called the waiter over and asked when we could expect our meal as we had been waiting nearly an hour at this point and the table next to us had theirs delivered despite arriving some time after us, he checked with the kitchen and apologised but it would be 4 minutes, after waiting 10 minutes we gave up and spoke to a manager explaining the problem. It obviously wasn't the wait staff fault as they were trying to manage a full restaurant between them, but the hotel restaurant should have been prepared for the increase in bookings during restaurant week.
We stayed over night in the crown plaza hotel on a dinner, bed and breakfast deal for our 12th year wedding anniversary, was great value for money. From check in to checking out the service was perfect. Food was absolutely gorgeous, in love with the chicken and sweetcorn starter 😍 wine was great, breakfast was fantastic n service was excellent, such lovely staff, can't wait to return 😊
Lovely staff, attentive but not overbearing. Food was served in good time, it was absolutely delicious and decent value for money.
Went for a meal before concert at the arena. Really enjoyed the experience and the food. However the one thing that spoilt the meal somewhat was the temperature of the dining room.IT WAS FREEZING! Some other diners moved and when my coffee came I could suffer no longer and had to put on my coat. A real pity as the food was really good.
Food was faultless and delicious but unfortunately the service was not good. Drinks at the start took ages, about 25 minutes, it wasn't even busy and all night it was hard to get the staff's attention.
We booked this for a Sunday brunch as the website gives the impression that this is a brasserie restaurant. In fact it's the dining room in the Crowne Plaza hotel. We booked for 11:15. The buffet closes at 11:30 so there was barely anything left - we just about scraped together a cooked breakfast. Coffee is from a machine. Pastries were stale. Hotel staff were mystified at the idea of an outside booking. The website is very misleading, and allowing bookings for times when food is not served is outrageous.
Fabulous food. All arrived quickly and correctly. Staff friendly and efficient. Ryan possibly a little over friendly to the good looking girls! Best bit was being able to use Tastecard on a Saturday night. Bonus!
We went there for the NE1 Restaurant week, thus the value of our food was amazing! However, drinks prices were just as always, so in overall we still came out with a good deal.
My starter was amazing, but I was underwhelmed by the main. Slightly overcooked risotto, very creamy without the sight of the promised asparagus and mushrooms.
Staff was a tad too 'enthusiastic'. They did just a good job in terms of the actual service (coming round to take orders, check up on drinks/food, provide necessary cutlery), but was almost uncomfortably enthusiastic when actually serving.
Overall though, I would go back for a business meal, or a slightly formal family/friends dinner.
