Hermitage Rd Bar & Restaurant
We sat in one of the bays one busy Sunday and the whole experience was excellent. Great vegan food particularly pleased me!
Menu was so limited. There literally was nothing on the menu that myself or my friend wanted. If it hadn’t have been for it being Saturday lunchtime and limited time together (I had travelled from Leeds and her from London) we wouldnt have stayed. My friend asked for her sandwich to be toasted and they only toasted the bread so the mozzarella wasn’t melted. The waiter asked if we wanted normal fries or Parmesan fries so we said Parmesan fries and when the bill came we had been charged an extra £2 each for this- this wasn’t clear. There was no drinks menu (other than wine) and we had to get up to request our bill. All in all won’t be bothering again
Sunday lunch was very nice, could not fault it at all.
We were served by a very nice young man called Charlie I believe. He was very attentive, polite and helpful and certainly added to our enjoyment of the afternoon. We had the roast beef which was very well prepared and we would definitely order it again.
Great food, good choice of drinks.
Complimentary glass of prosecco for my girlfriend's birthday was a nice touch.
We have been to the Hermitage numerous times but although I enjoyed my lunch my husband was not particularly impressed with his. It was very noisy but convivial and I have no doubt we will return at some point.
Great place to eat. Been many times and will return. But, we asked for lactic acidosis / dairy free meal. The salad wa served with a dressing that we had made clear could not be added. It was a a shame that the waitress was sent back by the chef to justify this instead of accepting that we can’t take the risk on the acidic regulator in the preserves used in the dressing. Poor show from the chef. No apology or offer of compensation for the additional
10 min delay to one meal.
Would have been a good review however our dessert came with a very long hair in it. A new dessert was brought back to us however with no apology. It was left on our bill and only when we raised this did we get an apology. For a £150 meal we were not impressed. A real shame as the starter was delicious. The main (duck) was lacking in flavour but still ok, the duck as an item was nice, the other sides just didn't go together as a meal, it didn't feel complete and the sweet potato 'fries' were undercooked.
As an aside, it appeared a new waitress was being trained and her supervisor was standing in the middle of the room nearby watching her every move very obviously. He was distracting to say the least and it made for uncomfortable watching, I can't imagine how the young girl felt. Surely he could've stood to the side inconspicuously?
Sadly our waitress didn’t do a check back so we couldn’t discuss our meal with her until we had ‘finished’. We both had the chicken and it wasn’t up to standard. The bulgar wheat was so crunchy it was unpleasant and completely tasteless. I understand a nice charred bit of broccoli but it was just unpleasant!
When I told the waitress all she could say was ‘the menu is changing next week’ - great! Cheers! But what about now?
Great vibe but service is lack lustre and the food not polished and thought through.
Amazing food and drink! Always love the hermitage!
Nice ambience, delicious food, one of the best coffees ever. Attentive, polite staff.
We loved the setting however the venue was too loud for our liking.
We had to send back my starter back and change it for another one as there was only 3 x king prawns for £8...disappointing.
We also had to ask the waiter to bring an ice bucket for our white wine which was brought to the table like warm.
Rib eye steak was tasty.
For a restaurant charging top prices it needs the food, service and drink to match it and for us it didnt.
If I went back and experienced the same issues I wouldn't go back and sadly for the restaurant I would tell my friends and family.
I suggest those in charge address the issues we had to face.
Food was mediocre, tables either side of us had to send food back! Not a great choice and service was slow
Hate to complain but our recent meal was not up to scratch considering the price we paid.
Service was incredibly slow (although our waiter was friendly and pleasant) waiting 20 minutes for drinks and over half an hour for our mains.
The menu was very standard with not much choice and nothing that really jumped out.
The food was average. My lobster was dry and hardly any meat.
Overall, such a shame as The Herm was always our go to for a special occasion but standards have massively slipped and we probably wouldn’t return.
As always cannot be faulted and the best place to eat, hands down, in Hitchin.
Have visited on several occasions and always leave slightly disappointed. No specials available on a Friday night, find the menu a little limiting. Meals arrived and generally all good, my companions had the steak and the ribs but the chicken in my Keralan chicken burger was dry and over cooked.
I think I will stick to the bar area on a Saturday afternoon. Lovely time to visit and have a relaxed drink and snack. Noise levels also unbearable in the evening and hard to have a conversation without feeling like you have to shout.
In a town full of good places to eat this would not be a first choice. Though goodness knows I keep coming back to be proved wrong!!!
Steak was exceptional!! Taste sensation!!
Service and ambience exceptional!!
House slaw was the only dissapointment. A watery mush?
Really enjoyed our meal which was delicious and generously portioned. Service was adequate but not up to the standard of the food. Considering that the restaurant was not busy, I think we should have expected more. Probably need more better trained staff because this lot haven't learned to smile and showed little enthusiasm for the job of keeping customers happy
Great atmosphere, service and food. Love the cocktails. The bar tender went the extra mile to chat with us and recommend a wine to accompany our meal. We go regularly and are never disappointed.
Food expensive and not really worth the price.
Noise level is high
Table on a podium made us feel on show.
Drinks are good though
Left to grab gelato from fabios down ths road
Had a lovely lunch with a friend here. There was a good choice of food on offer and the food was delicious.
This is my go-to Hitchin restaurant for special occasions but for the first time the food was disappointing. The dip on the veggie sharing board was watery and tasteless and the bhajis were dry with clumps of dried spices. My duck was dry and chewy and served with uninspiring wedges of sweet potato. My daughter's chicken burger was also dry. My Classic Mojito lacked sugar and the glass was so full of ice it was difficult to drink. Sadly I will not be rushing back there.
Very poor trip to The Hermitage. The menu was limited , uninspiring and expensive. No specials at all , only one fish dish .
Our waitress was sullen and surly . Hit and miss at the Herm . This was a miss .
The food was nice , not as good as previous visits though. I did comment on the starter to our waiter who said had he done an earlier check back he could have done something about it but as he hadnt couldnt. The service was ok seemed very disorganised, it was hard to tell who was in charge as everything just seemed not quite up to the usual standard.
It was my first time dining at Hermitage Rd but I’ve heard good things so had somewhat high expectations.
Love the set up & the open kitchen. Great decor, ambience & style of plates.
Service was great & food came out quickly.
The crispy fried duck leg is a revelation!
Highly recommended for a great evening with great food options
Always a great experience at Hermitage Rd. Great venue, nice vibe, great food! Staff are always friendly and there to help.
Food was great
Good timings between courses
Very well priced
And lots of it
Love this place, always so good whenever we go. Quality of the food is excellent and there’s a great atmosphere.
Everyone was so friendly, helpful and professional. Sorry if we kept anyone late.
The food was great too.
We enjoyed a delicious meal with the family. Sunday host a roast was so good, and the service was attentive. We will be back
Great place, great food and drink and great atmosphere
Not only was the food the best food I've had in the UK, but the service we received was impeccable. Great atmosphere, great food, great service and thanks to you, great 1st date
Food was lovely but service was a little poor. Been here many times but this was the worst...
Food was superb as always!
Thank you for an amazing meal.
We will come back for sure :)
The music was too loud for a lunchtime. Expensive for what it is.
Loved this venue in Hitchin.
Cool vibe, large and airy, attentive staff.
First time to the restaurant and it was superb. Definitely going back!!
Average food, slow service, had finished 2 drinks before the mains arrived. Had to wait over an hour for the food, best part was the dessert which was lovely. The restaurant was nowhere near fully booked so slow service was questionable? Had to wait over 20 mins for the bill also. Expensive for average pub grub
Nice place to have quiet lunch on a weekday. Menu is good. Food high quality.
