HIX Oyster and Fish House
If you fancy seeing your food being prepared and watching the chefs at work, book a seat at the popular Kitchen Table. You can also enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the kitchen at the ‘Shipwreck Bar’.
We cater for everyone at the Fish House. We always have a meat dish for the ardent carnivore. Kid's and vegetarian menus and gluten-free dishes are always available.
The nearest train station is Axminster and Lyme Regis is a tenure drive away in a taxi or there is a bus which stops by the station.
We love Hix in Lyme Regis. Always fabulous service and lovely food. So relaxed.
Good seafood, very fresh. Oysters very tasty Great views of the port and sea. Presentation was very pretty. Casual atmosphere, friendly staff.
Excellent service. Lovely ambiance, it was dark so we didn’t get to see the view, but the lighting created a warm relaxed atmosphere. Food was perfect! Generous portions and absolutely delicious!
Food was good for lunch. Service was ok but a little slow at times. Could have been a little more attentive.
The three fish eaters in my party loved their mains. However as a vegetarian I was sodisappointed. The two mains on offer were the same as two months earlier. A curry & 'vegetarian spelt'. That smacks of uninterested afterthought to me. Such a shame as I love the venue, view & service. Please try harder to make the experience a better one for us vegetarians! Thank you. I'll appreciate it & come more often. TD
We love eating here and do so fairly regularly. The ONLY downside is the occasional couple/group who feel that everyone else should be privileged and hear them speak. This was the case on this occasion. I know that Hix can do absolutely nothing about it and remain charming and helpful, but these people really are boring and I wish they would desist.
Attentive staff, lovely setting. Food delicious.
Lovely staff, amazing food. Best seafood I’ve had for such a long time.. the mussels were incredible, delicious sprats, crab pasta was wonderful, chocolate mousse 👌🏼 Will definitely come back.
Excellent food excellent view excellent service - always guaranteed at Hix.
Really enjoyed our recent visit for husbands birthday food was delicious, service was quick and staff very helpful and friendly. Beautiful setting with fantastic views.
Excellent food and atmosphere. We were left a long time between main and desert and had to ask for the menu. Otherwise very good.
Location is beautiful and environment is nice. Friendly service but on the slower side, especially for the time which was not busy. Food is average. Would definitely return.
Great location overlooking the coast. Informal, friendly atmosphere. Exceptionally well cooked and presented fish. Starter took far too long to arrive (50 mins from order), but we considered this a glitch in an overall excellent day. Definitely recommend.
I have been here before and loved it but this was lacklustre. Arrived at 8, starving. Had to flag waiter down to take order at 8.30. No bread offered to keep us going. Starters arrived around 8.50 and were lovely although we had lost the plot by then and were ready to eat anything. one of mains was good, the other was two unappetising slabs of overcooked and almost cold John Dory with a teaspoon (literally) Of bearnaise sauce. and not as well cooked as if I had done it at home. Would have preferred one fish and more generous presentation. Presentation was, shall we say, rustic - AKA slapdash. Felt as though, as soon as we didn’t order copious amounts of alcohol we got forgotten about.
A lovely fish lunch with an interesting menu and excellent service
Great situation, food well served, interesting and opening hours useful for late lunch etc.
Our welcome was extremely friendly as was the subsequent highly efficient and attentive service. The food was excellent. The wine is perhaps slightly overpriced but the compensation is the outstanding view. Thank you everyone in duty that day.
An interestingly different menu which tempts you to try ingredients which you have not tried before. I had the cuttlefish croquettes which were delicious.
The restaurant is in a great location overlooking the Cobb at Lyme Regis although when it is dark, you can really only see your own reflection.
We had a fabulous evening. Great service and amazing food. It was recommended to us and we’d recommend it too.
Excellent service, really tasty local food - well prepared and good portion sizes. The locally caught crab was really tasty and all served with a delightful view over the ocean, albeit blowing a gale but that added to the general ambience.
Unfussy and delicious. Would be nice if mains were automatically served with some salad or veg
Slow service throughout the meal. Over 20 minutes until the first drinks were brought out...
Food good apart from one main was cold.
General Manager, Rob Moretto, seemed to have an attitude problem - Perhaps not suited for a career in the hospitality business?
I booked HIX for my partners birthday dinner and couldn’t be happier with the selection of food, fish and wine on offer. We had the Torbay Huss curry which I highly recommend - very indulgent! The ambience was lovely and we even got a sneak peak at the Lyme Regis firework display from the balcony part way through our meal.
One of my favourite places, and one of the few places I would eat alone. Excellent food, the staff are fabulous and the atmosphere is wonderful. Can not recommend this restaurant highly enough! The Oysters with scotch bonnet mayo alone are enough to make the trip worth while!
Another return visit that met all expectations with excellent food and service.
This was the first time visiting an oyster bar for both me and my partner. The food was very tasty and of high quality, we felt it was fairly good value for money too considering the good reputation the restaurant has. We will return, most likely at an earlier time of year so we get to try out the lobster.
The staff were both professional and friendly, and were quick to help with questions regarding food and the menu.
The restaurant space isn’t the biggest but we didn’t find this to be a problem.
A really very nice venue but sadly a disappointing experience for us
Sharing main course (£55) arrived luke warm. Sides dishes arrived 10 minutes later. Plates cold. Dinner now cold.
Waiting staff all very pleasant. They acknowledged the issues unprompted, although no action to address them.
Whilst almost £90 for a meal for two isn't a fortune today, we had hoped for a better experience for that kind of money
Fabulous fresh food, innovative dishes, staff very helpful, service good but a little slow.
Very impressed with the menu and the presentation of the food. Prompt and friendly service and a good vibe. Lovely view of The Cobb, and the walk up the hill to the restaurant will help to increase your appetite!
very nice meal in nice surroundings , very good staff and service , lovely location overlooking Lyme bay
The three of us were unanimous - we thoroughly enjoyed the food and the relaxed atmosphere. The only off note was some little bits of tin foil in one dish - someone had been a sloppy preparing the roast pumpkin - but an apology was quickly forthcoming and the dish was struck off the bill [the plate was otherwise left clean]. All the food was seasonal, local and very tasty. The wine list is not too long but relatively inexpensive and complemented the food well.
We were a group of six celebrating the end of great weekend walking around the Lyme Regis area. We had a wonderful evening. The food was great. The service was excellent, as was the banter with the staff. I would highly recommend Hix Oyster and Fish House to anyone who is looking for somewhere a bit special.
My partner and I had an amazing dinner at Hix on Saturday. I had the gurnard and my partner had the fish pie, absolutely amazing food, great and unique flavours, buzzing atmosphere and a lovely waitress who was knowledgable about the food. This restaurant is a true gem.
We love Hix and have been many times but to find that our order for starters was lost and that it took some time for the staff to realise that we had not been fed was not what we expect to find at Hix.
In addition we asked for 2 glasses of the Sandbar and were offered a Carafe only to find that the Carafe was not Sandbar but Viognier
Great local, seasonal food, lovely staff, wonderful evening!
Beautiful view. London fine dining vibe, but not stuffy or snobby. Very friendly staff. Food excellent and parking nearby. Bit disappointed that some of the gins were out of stock but a minor detail.
Close to where my husband and I were staying (coincidence), so really handy. Good atmosphere for both adults and children. Friends plan to eat here so it was handy that I got there first !! Husband’s birthday treat and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you very much.
An enjoyable evening with well priced wines and a well balanced menu. We will certainly return.
The service was very slow, we had to wait over a n hour for our food. My oysters had a lot of the shell in them, I have never experienced this before. My side dish of greens was hardly warm and had lots of water in it, the fish was tiny and expensive. The chocolate pudding was beautifully presented and tasted delightful. As ever the view and ambience were spectacular
In our opinion the experience was more style than substance.
Very disappointing. Four of us went for Dinner, difficult to get to. Window table but reflective glass means you do not see the view. Food had no visual impact, bland and devoid any form of garnish, lacked taste and hot dishes served cold. Have had much better oysters elsewhere and whole crab served was very small. In the last four days we dined in the area at Hive Beach Cafe, The Watch Cafe, Anchor Inn at Sea Town and all were better quality and less costly than the Hix. Original wine choice not available and tried to sell a more expensive replacement. The same bottle (and vintage) of wine was £12.00 more expensive than Hive Beach. Hix was supposed to be the highlight but expectations definitely dashed.
