HIX Oyster and Fish House
If you fancy seeing your food being prepared and watching the chefs at work, book a seat at the popular Kitchen Table. You can also enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the kitchen at the ‘Shipwreck Bar’.
We cater for everyone at the Fish House. We always have a meat dish for the ardent carnivore. Kid's and vegetarian menus and gluten-free dishes are always available.
We did enjoy it and the views are fabulous.
We had prawns two ways as a starter and the uncooked were watery and lacked flavor. The mains were good however not exceptional. Overall we left a disapointed and feel it did'nt represent good value for money on this occasion.
We were very disappointed with the food we were served. The steamed prawns as part of the starter were tasteless. The crab starter was just OK. The main course of monkfish curry was very disappointing. I'm not sure how long the monkfish was cooked for but the texture was unpleasant. I have cooked this dish at home and this is the only time I can say that my home cooked dish is better than a professionally cooked one. The hake and chips was passable.
Overall it was a very underwhelming experience to eat at this particular restaurant. The menu itself was limited and dull and we had difficulty finding anything appealing to order.
Great location, but let down by the poor service from both staff and management...
Stunning location, fantastic food, relaxed atmosphere, lovely staff, thoroughly enjoyable lunch, we will be back!
Almost perfect lunch for birthday treat. Nice touch was half litre caraf of house wine for £10 for those of us on a budget. View wonderful which l guess becomes less of a plus after dark.
Service was friendly and courses arrived in timely fashion. From the set menu we went retro with the prawn cocktail - absolutely delicious. Smoked haddock beautiful and chocolate mousse divine other than being twice the size it needed to be. Thanks to all involved; we’ll be back.
Went on a Tuesday night in the winter! It was the curry club - 3 courses of superb food for £20 -amazing value for fresh, seasonal food in a room with an unbeatable view. Service friendly and just about right. Highly recommended.
Second visit. Wifes birthday.
As always excellent staff. Polite. Knowledgeable.
Blue steak fell apart. Wife's still talking about the oysters.
I was excited about having dinner here as we were only in Lyme Regis for the weekend and I had booked this in advance. Upon arrival we were ignored for the first 5 mins, the staff were busy but I felt they should have at least acknowledged us with a smile of a hello. We brushed that off and the service once we were seated was very good. The food was disappointing. The highlights were the brown oysters and the rhubarb desert. The rest was very under seasoned and not very nice. I had the Lyme Bay prawns done two ways - very underwhelming, then the fish pie which was ok after adding a significant amount of seasoning. My husband had the spaghetti with lobster and chili - again very underwhelming and then the monk fish curry and the curry sauce was simply awful. It was a shame as the service and the ambience was good, but the food wasn't up to scratch and it we spent quite a bit of money. Sadly we wouldn't return.
Great service and locally sourced food. Staff attentive and helpful
Outstanding fish-exceptional! delicious side dishes
Very slow service, small potions, dry and very small John Dory (probably left under the serving light for too long) also looked very uninteresting (especially for the price!). Desert good but with just a desert spoon of custard in a tiny jug (I asked for more and did receive some). No bread on table or offered. A restaurant of your calibre should have own baked bread in-house, especially as the wait was so long. Tables too close to each other too as I knocked the neigbouring chair twice. Lastly you put service charge on the bill which is, as I understand it, illegal.
p.s. the oysters were good and I am told your curry is too, by friends. Unfortunately you had run out very early in the evening.
Beautifully cooked fish and loved the seaweed potatoes. The service was exemplary. Needed more sunshine to look across the Cobb though! Thank you, will be back
Whilst the ambience and service was excellent I was not impressed by the food. The Norfolk Treacle Tart in particular was a very unpleasant dish to finish the meal. The pastry had a distinctly floury and odd flavour. I discussed my displeasure with the staff and was told that they used gluten free flour as they cater those suffering from Coeliac disease. While this is commendable, surely they could provide an alternative for those who of us that do not. Norfolk Treacle Tart was said to be a particular favourite of the author Charles Dickens, I believe he would be turning in his grave if he tasted this version.
I can however recommend their choice of Muscadet . Quite delicious.
My partner and I ate at Hix for a special birthday which we were celebrating with family on holiday in Lyme. We had a table for two on a Tuesday evening. We were a little apprehensive having read recent average / negative reviews.
There was no need. The staff, and there were lots of them, were knowledgable and attentive - but not over the top. The food was just perfect, beautifully cooked, seasoned and presented.
The restaurant was busy but not full; it was curry night so it had a fish curry menu alongside its regular menu and specials.
The staff tuned into our pace and we took our time to have an aperitif, eat three courses and have a nightcap before leaving at around 10pm. By that time there were just 2 other diners left but I didn’t feel at all rushed or hurried to leave.
I’d recommend the gurnard if it’s on when you go. And if you fancy a tipple, go for an espresso mootini and/or a Fiery Cow.
I honestly can’t think of a thing that could be better. I definitely recommend the restaurant and hope I get chance to visit again.
Lovely setting , attentive staff, some gorgeous unusual dishes, cockle popcorn , oysters hake and cockles , salads and veg all delicious . Sea views and ambience great. Friendly staff . Service took a while and fish chips and mushy peas too salty didn’t taste freshly cooked so wouldn’t recommend that dish but everything else was lovely and I would go back and try other dishes.
Very friendly service. Fabulous food. Set menu is excellent value.
Beautiful setting high above the Cobb in Lyme Regis. Service and food very good. I liked the wine list, not too long but varied. A very enjoyable lunch.
We were excited about visiting Hix Oyster and Fish House having been to one of the Hix Steak restaurants in London. However we felt overall a little disappointed. The service was good with the staff polite and professional but they were run off their feet as a result the attention to detail was lacking and the speed slow. The food was nice but again it felt like it was missing those little touches.
Dull flavours, dry, needs some seriously Indian spices.
Sadly I have to report that Hix is overpriced and showing severe signs of neglect.
The first issue was that it was unbearably hot. We were not the only customers struggling, but the staff seemed oblivious. We asked for a window or door to be opened - which it was eventually. This made us and our fellow diners somewhat more comfortable.
The service was beyond slow, with a long wait for drinks and to have our order taken. However, eventually, we had drinks, were comfortable and were waiting for our order.
However, when our food came, my dish was cold to the point of inedibility. I sent it back. The head waiter quickly took it but offered no apology or even looked perturbed by it - one suspects this may be a common occurrence.
When my dish finally arrived for a second time my wife had finished her food. This time it was tepid at best, but by then I'd given up. So I ate it, we paid and left. There was no apology and to make matters worse as we left the head waiter had the audacity to suggest that he expected to see us back soon. Not likely.
We have been to Hix several times over the years and can safely say that every time we've been it has been a slightly worse experience, to the point now that we will never go back again.
The decor is tired, the food cold and the service wanting - sadly this feels like the death throes of a once great restaurant.
Really disappointed- we were really looking forward to having a delicious meal - the kids meals were dreadful and curry club mains were pretty poor too - our bill was over £100. Service was fab and the desserts were lovely but other than that the food was disappointing.
Unfortunately, the service wasn’t up to much this time and one of our group was ill from some shellfish
We were rather disappointed. Somehow the standard of food and service has slipped since we first dined there soon after it opened. I can't put my finger on it but has Mark Hix become complacent?
Great food..... but it took ages to come.... the staff were very apologetic but it felt like our order was forgotten about....
I booked a table for two nearly a month in advance and requested a window table. On arrival all window tables were occupied and the staff seemed to have no awareness of this request.
The food was good and the service was pleasant - but the popularity of the place meant that there was little opportunity to ensure customers were happy.
Good location, nice views excellent service and fine fish!
I’d booked a romantic meal here as
I had heard good things and love fish.
On arrival we were disappointed from the get go. It was noisy, the menu was not that varied and the service was slow. We waited 45 minutes for our starter. We both opted for fish and chips as nothing else jumped out at us. I had a crab starter on some dry toasts and my husband had soup and a couple of oysters. All in all Mediocre not what I was expecting.
Fantastic location. Friendly, helpful staff and delicious food. Slightly addicted to the Cockle Popcorn. My partner’s Fish Soup was amazing. Always recommend it to friends and family.
Unfortunately despite the best efforts of the waiters, we were left waiting over an hour for our main course.
At Hix, they know their fish and oysters well, so they are cooked to perfection. The food was excellent, really tasty and beyond our expectations. Beautiful location, with service to match, making it a really Sep Ian meal out. Thank you. We will be coming back soon!
Ambiance and service were good but soup, fish and desert were not at the level of our expectations. The only exception is the oysters. They were delicious.
Really gorgeous meal at Hix on Saturday night. Perfect location; attentive, knowledgeable and friendly staff; and a menu to delight any seafood lover. I could have ordered any item - difficult decisions! The seafood soup was straight out of Provence, and the fish pie was absolutely delicious. My partner had the coley fish and chips which he really enjoyed too. No qualms about recommending Hix and I hope we can go back in the summer to enjoy the view more.
We were met by impeccably attentive staff, we scoffed delicious food (classic fish pie filled with lots of succulent chunks of fish, amazing cockle popcorn and superb dressed crab) which was promptly served and apart from a woman behind me talking about patios and holiday homes for slightly longer than I would have preferred our visit was flawless. The piece de la resistance was the Banoffee Cheesecake - words cannot do the experience justice.
We went to the restaurant for my husband's 70th Birthday. The starters were very good however, I had the crab linguine which had so little crab pieces in it , I could have counted them on one hand. My husband had the john dory fish which was ok. We tried 4 glasses of different white wines and felt that the quality of all the wines was mediocre . We spoke to the waitress in charge and she informed us that the restaurant had no input as to the choice of wines that were available. This seemed to be a lame excuse as the wines were not exactly cheap. A disappointing meal out on a special day.
50 minutes for the first food with indifferent customer service and average food.
Slow service and average overpriced food although in pleasant surroundings.
Friendly efficient service, excellent food, and wonderful views.
Everything was a joy. The one niggle is that we were charged £4 for what appeared to be tap water for 3, though everything else was very good value considering the quality. Wonderful views, deliciously fresh fish and delightful efficient staff. Highly recommend.
This was the third time of visiting Hix and as the previous occasion the food , staff & location were excellent.
It is a must for a special night out.
