HIX Oyster and Fish House
If you fancy seeing your food being prepared and watching the chefs at work, book a seat at the popular Kitchen Table. You can also enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the kitchen at the ‘Shipwreck Bar’.
We cater for everyone at the Fish House. We always have a meat dish for the ardent carnivore. Kid's and vegetarian menus and gluten-free dishes are always available.
The nearest car park is Holmbush which is a few minutes walk from the restaurant (£2 for 24 hours, and free after 6pm). There is also an NCP car park next to Tesco Express in the high street - from here please walk through Langmoor Gardens next to the cinema. A further car park by the Cobb is also available but at the bottom of a very steep hill so not suitable for people with walking difficulties (£2 a day and free after 6pm).
The bus stops in the high street - from here please walk through Langmoor Gardens next to the cinema.
The nearest train station is Axminster and Lyme Regis is a tenure drive away in a taxi or there is a bus which stops by the station.
Really great night - food, location / views and service
Wonderful evening great food the location is snipers and the staff were very welcoming
This restaurant is all about the view and the fish. I felt that you paid quite a bit extra for the view but it was worth it. I might not have been as happy if I was sitting away from window. Beware - absolutely nothing for vegetarians!
The French waitress was very friendly and attentive but sadly that was the only positive thing I could write about our lunch date. The food was mediocre and menu was lacking in choice. Lobster was Ok but at £40 and no other side to accompany without paying extra was in my opinion poor. I would not recommend this restaurant over others with a similar view on the Cobb.. Mark Hix may have an excellent reputation but think on this occasion it let his name down.
Been before and really enjoyed again on this occasion Environment is cool and unpretentious, service was friendly and efficient Excellent fish soup and good old prawn cocktail starter. Hake with cockles and sea vegetables plus side of heritage potatoes really full of flavour and well cooked. Seafood platter ( without lobster) was a little underwhelming cockles , mussels, prawns, great oysters and half crab
Just one dessert of fried ricotta with rhubarb was superb and two lovely chocolate truffles on plate with chocolate ‘happy anniversary’ capped off a lovely meal in chilled environment with breathtaking views. Would recommend for casual dining occasion where great fresh seafood is part of a complete experience. Will be back!!
Booked s table on line as a surprise for husband to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary. Recommended HIX. Very pleased with the whole experience. Would have given service 5 stars but had to chase our wine twice ! Apart from that little slip excellent all round.
We have been meaning to go for ages, well worth the wait, just wish we had gone before now, we eat a lot in Padstow, the sea food capital, but this was the best Fruits de mer I have had in ages and my wife says her fish was outstanding as well, we will definitely go again as we have refallen in love with Lyme Regis, gosh how it has changed in the last twenty years, lovely walks, brilliant shops, nice pubs, bit hilly but hey that’s how you work up an appetite........
Very caring towards our son who had an injured leg.
Very good food and ambiance.
We had been recommended Hix by our hotel and decided to indulge ourselves in a treat.
To say we were disappointed would be an understatement. The fish, including John Dory, was low on flavour, the chips were no better than those you get in McDonalds - vastly inferior to those served up the the Anchor Inn in Seatown the next day! The only saving graces were a reasonable pea and bean side dish and the pleasant young waitress who took our dessert order.
A massive disappointment.
Very disappointing. Great view but the service was very poor and the food average. I wanted to order the fish pie but was told it would be half an hour wait, so ordered the Huss Curry as did one other guest and the third ordered a prawn cocktail with a side salad. The food took an hour to arrive and after taking our order and delivering the drinks, the waitress paid no attention to us at all. Didn’t ask if we wanted more drinks or give any explanation for the long wait. When the food came it was OK, but overpriced. Essentially felt I was paying for the great view. Bill came with the ‘discretionary’ service charge of 10%. I feel this is never good and as the waitress did nothing more than the very basics of her job...taking and order and delivering food, I did not leave any tip. We won’t be going back.
We dined with my brother and his wife to celebrate their birthdays. Wonderful locally sourced food which was expertly cooked. Great service. On the expensive side but worth it on a special occasion given the location and top notch food.
The food was average, saved by a very good cheese board. Another plus is that we had a table with a great panoramic view over Lyme Bay, so even though the food was mediocre, the view did it’s best to compensate. Also, I must also mention that there are non proper thick cut chips on the menu, only thin cut fries, disappointing!
Food was great. Service was generally excellent, apart from one very very rude “manager”. When we complained about the time we had to wait for our food, our food showed up (over an hour), which the “manager” then remarked “look your food is turning up, we can speak about this after you have eaten” and completely fobbed us off. Extremely rude.
Very nice food and evening . Service was appalling and very very slow. Left outside no drinks or service. They give you an eating time. Can't deliver so in the time given we would only have had starters . Not good enough
Very unfriendly reception when we arrived.
The food was OK but the service was poor.
would not go again
The food was very good and the view, if you can get a table by the window, is fantastic. Unfortunately the service is shambolic, I’ve been to all of the other HIX Restaurants and never experienced this before. I wouldn’t normally write a bad review based on service as we all have off days but I received a rather rude and sarcastic remark from the head waiter when I asked to pay out bill for the third time. Sorry guys not really good enough for a Hix restaurant.
Delicious meal with good attentive service, will definitely come again and recommend to others
What a lovely view overlooking Lyme Regis, the food we all had was amazing, the fried oysters with scotch bonnet mayonnaise was delicious and I shared the fisherman spelt, very similar to risotto. Our friends had the mussels as a starter and the squid . The service is very laid back no hurry to move on to the next person.
The setting is wonderful and the food was delicious, this is my second visit and I highly recommend it, you definitely have to book though .
We went on Friday lunchtime and it was wonderful we went again the next day which was Saturday but at Easley evening the meal wasn’t up to standard sent starter back. The service was poor had to go to the bar to get some lemon for my starter then ordered more drinks only mine came missed out my husbands drink when main meal came again had to go to the bar to get a spoon so my husband could put his curry that he ordered into his plate. Really disappointed with the evening meal maybe down to the staff which were different than the lunchtime staff who were great. Been going to the hix for many years now just a shame they let themselves down the last visit ☹️☹️
Lovely fresh local produce. Good friendly service. Lovely situation. Shame about the frozen chips. Would definitely go again
The location and staff were good but that's about it. The food was okay but nothing special, certainly not worth the money. Small portions and no wow factor, put me off fine dining. I found the whole experience pretentious and disappointing.
Great food as usual, the Huss Curry was great.
Service was a bit mixed, simple things like capturing the wine order and following the cocktails once finished; keeping the water topped up; some vinegar for the chips - three requests to two different staff and still never came. An annoyed 8 year old who loves her vinegar!
First world problems and feel a bit embarrassed even highlighting!
This was a treat whilst on a break in Lyme Regis, I had the Brill my husband had the Huss curry, both delicious, children enjoyed their food too.
Will be going again on our next visit.
Great to get to this location perched above Lyme Regis with a panoramic view of Lyme bay. Food was simple and well prepared with a nice couple of options for children. Service relaxed but efficient. Starters included a great squid and a classic prawn cocktail. Mains standout was a Huss curry. Pudding was Raspberry Bakewell and a great trifle. We will return and look forward to a winters view of the bay.
We had a wonderful, leisurely lunch whilst on holiday for the week in Lyme Regis. Delicious cocktail on the terrace before lunch! Our girls remembered the cockle popcorn from our last visit, so it was a must! Lunch was fabulous, very friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere.
A very disappointing dining experience. Service was particularly poor.
I have eaten at Hix Soho and loved it, so wanted to try Lyme Regis as we live in Dorset. We were looking for a restaurant to replace our regular visits to The Riverside in West Bay, tragically sold by the latest owner who did it no favours.
I was confident that I would be absolutely impressed. Location is fabulous, the styling of the restaurant is great, in tune with the setting.
Location: public car park but we found a space, even on Bank Holiday, short walk to the very attractive restaurant.
Welcome: good, we were early, having allowed for traffic that didn't materialised. The French manager, was excellent and he immediately gave us a table. Cocktail was gorgeous!
Menu: Sorry... rather uninspired, lacking any real oomph. Cockle popcorn was the most interesting!
Food: good but honestly, unexciting.
Service: mixed, willing and friendly but not desperately professional.
The bill: I'd say a tad high for the food, worth it for the location on such a marvellous sunny hot day.
Overall, we had a nice time but not blown away.
Not a varied menu. I had the Scrumpy Fried Pollack with their version of Mushy Peas. Despite the fish being extremely fresh I found the HIX version of Fish n Chips very bland.
My partner had Peri Peri Mackeral and was not impressed. The Peri Peri sauce was non existent and a grave disappointment.
Definately not value for money.
Nice restaurant and decor. Unfortunately the food was avarage and the fish curry was very very poor. Both the rice and the fish were unseasoned, the sauce didn't have any depth to it, the onion Bhaji was soaked in oil. Overall the food was too expensive for the quality we got.
We come here every year while on holiday and lucky enough to be staying in Lyme Regis so a shortwalk for us. Last night meal which was, as it always is, delicious. Great food and fabulous service plus a spectacular view over the Cobb. Highly recommended.
Excellent food, beautiful setting.. perfect in every way
We had a lovely evening.I mentioned it being our anniversary in the booking. We had a lovely table with a stunning view.Service was fab, slick and friendly.Food was great. We had oysters which were very good indeed. For starters my better half opted for a not at all boring prawn cocktail, lots of plump juicy prawns.I had pollock salad, juicy cubes of lightly battered pollock which melted in the mouth on dressed leaves.Delicious.We had the Fisherman's Spelt sharer for main.It came with a mixed leaf dressed salad. We went for something different and we not at all disappointed.Mussels, scallops, prawns and hake in a spelt base with stock and a little cream. Also delicious.3 chosen homemade ice creams for pudding all washed down with a nice white and a beer for him to go with the oysters. We stayed at Hix Townhouse which is wonderful, and only a short walk from the restaurant so we had a 10% discount voucher from the hotel and also had a complimentary prosecco cocktail on arrival. After our dessert we were presented with complimentary homemade truffles on a 'happy anniversary' inscribed plate.Perfect.We were also lent a lantern to light our short walk back to the Townhouse.£107 all in, including the 10% discount and then 10% service (£10) which we would have left anyway. All in all we had a fantastic and memorable night. Some reviews describe it as expensive but we thought it worth every penny.Yes a celebrity chef is behind it but not every celebrity chef uses sustainable products and the bycatch with provenance. The views are worth paying for.
Amazing! Visiting Lyme Regis from London and have been to your Hix Soho previously. Restaurant has such beautiful views, especially at lunch time. The John Dory was delicious and the house wine, very delicious. The service very smooth and pleasant. Will definitely be back when visiting again.
I booked a table for my parents here as it was their 80th birthdays and they were holidaying in the area. They said that they had a wonderful time. The food was very good, the serving staff attentive and polite, and the atmosphere in general very relaxing and enjoyable. They had a great table with a good view, and they ate three courses with wine and coffee and nothing was a disappointment. They found the choices to be interesting, and everything was well cooked. They ate on a Monday lunchtime...I don't know if the day changes anything, but thought it worth mentioning!
Polite service. Half the food was delicious the other half average - e.g. fish pie, super dry and 90% salmon...bit disappointing. Whole bream was super. So hit and miss. Oh some things had sold out and the service didn't know, so double check!
Our experience dining at Hix was pleasurable and ideal for celebrating a 70th birthday following a much noisier family gathering a week earlier
The atmosphere was calm and professional with very good service without being over attentive
On a busier night the two hour time slot may have been a problem but we felt no pressure to vacate the table. A thoughly enjoyable evening
I unfortunately was disappointed with my meal at the this restaurant,
me and my partner had a meal for her birthday one evening over the weekend.
The staff were very pleasant
and we were greeted with a warm welcome.
But then the food arrived! I had bream which was nice, but I ordered three side
dishes which were all cold,
all meant to be hot.
I mentioned this to a member of staff and was back chatted as to whether I had asked a question or not.. far from the point my food I ordered was cold.
Yes they had not charged us for these cold sides, but it was the fact that this individual member of staff’s response was soo rude really got my back up.
It was a fairly expensive meal I thought and the quality just didn’t reflect in the price.
This may not be the case for everyone’s experience here but I was hoping for much more and very let down.
Unfortunately I won’t be returning any time soon.
Came to Hix for lunch to celebrate mother in law's 70th birthday. We were allocated a middle inside table, on a sunny clear day with fantastic views of the sea, the golden cap and the Cobb. The service was excellent, good recommendations from the very helpful waiter who offered some tasting of wine before choosing the bottle which was very nice indeed. The squid starter was excellent and the mackerel piri was delicious and not too spicy. The folks chose the mussels to start and homemade fish fingers for mains and they were suitably impressed. The golden chocolate dessert was delightful - small yet rich. Yes it's a bit pricey, but if you want something special, in a fabulous location with fantastic service, this is just the ticket!
Have eaten here for several years now and the food is always supurb.
Views are fantastic and service unobtrusive
Meal was as good as ever but young loud couple on next table with baby - throwing food and their wingeing young lad rather put the dampers on the wife's 60th birthday celebration.
Not the restaurant's fault of course though.
Nearly top stars all round - apart from the value - tiny side portions at £3.95
Will go back though
