HIX Oyster and Fish House
If you fancy seeing your food being prepared and watching the chefs at work, book a seat at the popular Kitchen Table. You can also enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the kitchen at the ‘Shipwreck Bar’.
We cater for everyone at the Fish House. We always have a meat dish for the ardent carnivore. Kid's and vegetarian menus and gluten-free dishes are always available.
The nearest car park is Holmbush which is a few minutes walk from the restaurant (£2 for 24 hours, and free after 6pm). There is also an NCP car park next to Tesco Express in the high street - from here please walk through Langmoor Gardens next to the cinema. A further car park by the Cobb is also available but at the bottom of a very steep hill so not suitable for people with walking difficulties (£2 a day and free after 6pm).
The bus stops in the high street - from here please walk through Langmoor Gardens next to the cinema.
The nearest train station is Axminster and Lyme Regis is a tenure drive away in a taxi or there is a bus which stops by the station.
We booked for my wife's birthday. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel special, food and service were excellent. We had asked for a seat with a view as it was my wife's birthday and that's exactly what we got overlooking the gardens and bay, and at the end of the meal, my wife was served with a special chocolate and happy birthday message. Hix made the evening one to remember and served some of the best food we've eaten - and we are real foodies! Tip - we stayed the night at Hix Townhouse which was a level 5 minute walk through the gardens to the restaurant, we didn't realise when we booked, but because we stayed there, we got a 10% discount in the restaurant and a free cocktail each - excellent, we will return!
Best seafood place I have ever been to. We thoroughly enjoyed everything put in front of us. Neighbouring diners also complimented their choices. Service was also impeccable. Wish I lived 210 miles nearer!
The staff were friendly and efficient. The food was well cooked and presented.
The service was great and it was such an amazing view of Lyme Bay.
The food is very good, it is a beautiful location, the restaurant has a very nice atmosphere. The service is very attentive.
A visit to Hix while visiting Lyme Bay is becoming a tradition. A big plus is that it is one of the few notable restaurants open on a Sunday evening. There was a good buzz without it being too noisy or intrusive. The simply cooked plaice between the two of us was very just what we wanted with good side dishes to add interest. Service was attentive but not intrusive. Overall enjoyable and good value.
Amazed at the great reviews for this restaurant. Pretty ordinary as far as we were concerned. Couple next to us didn’t even get to sit down before the waiter was walking them thru water options! We had cheese platter had to ask what they were but weren’t told where they came from - pretty standard level of service to expect. Views better in day time.
beautiful location over looking the cobb. great service and really liked the ecowater where you can have sparkling water in a jug. also they serve wine in 1/2 litre carafes which is just right for the 2 of us. good range of local gins served with lots of ice. food was tasty and good portion size.
Fantastic as always great staff amazing food beautiful view just perfect!!Thank you for a fantastic experience 😊😊
have wanted to try Hix for years and finally got to try it , myself and my husband were a bit disappointed, the staff were really lovely and attentive although not so much towards the end of the night ..but the food wasn't what we expected , the crushed seaweed potatoes were cold and the mixed peas and beans with the mint were warm but you couldn't taste the mint at all in them , I had the ray wing which was nice but again warm and not hot and my husband's choice was the same , because of the time we had booked 8.45 we thought it was because of that so didn't complain at the time but wished we had now .
we eat in quite a lot of recognised chefs restaurants and I have to say this was in the bottom of them very disappointed .
Very welcoming polite staff, excellent location, great local produce cooked to a high standard, and not overpriced. Thoroughly enjoyable evening. On our got to go back to list!
Lovely restaurant, with great sea view, food good but not exceptional. Have been to J Sheekey in London, so compared!
Staff very accommodating, had a very nice evening
Took 40 minutes for the starter to arrive, the starters that initially arrived were incorrect. No vege option for mains available. Steak tough and tasteless, all fish courses good, puddings lovely, wine pleasant. Service erratic and basic. Pleasant enough but overall disappointed!!!!
Bit disapointing this visit sevice very slow and restaurant not that busy staff seemed a bit pre occupied it was 4.30 seemed to be a change over time
Superb food in a lovely modern setting. Fabulous views overlooking Lyme Bay. Service was excellent - our waitress Emily couldn't have been more helpful and professional. Would highly recommend!
A bright light in the local food scene, which is otherwise fairly pedestrian. Excellent, locally sourced seafood, cooked simply, but well and in a relaxed, friendly dining room. Chirpy, efficient service and a nice mixture of comfort food favorites and dishes designed with foodies in mind.
Good food, good service but pricey and paying for bread a bit cheeky. Had to close windows as cold draught.
Starters were amazing, prawn cocktail is the best I've ever eaten. Lobster was good too.
The manager warmed up toward the end, but started off with a bit of a Britas Empire / Little Britain vibe, he communicated with the mildly aggressive level of politeness one might expect from a disgruntled provincial B&B owner.
"I'm afraid we cannot accommodate madam on the terrace"
"Madam cannot have prosecco... As we serve english sparkling wine here at Hix"
Not quite the chilled manner I've experienced in other Hix spots.
But as I said he warmed up and we had a laugh about it.
The oysters were good - the mussels terrible and the crab very average. I thought it was very average for the money. I wouldn’t recommend going again as there are far better places around which are better value for money.
Fantastic setting , fresh local produce , great service - overall a lovely evening.
To be honest I was a little underwhelmed. I didn’t leave thinking “wow that was good I will come again”
Location of the restaurant and food was very good, though as expected a tad pricey. Although service stated off ok it deteriorated throughout the evening as the restaurant (which is not very big for the amount of tables it has) filled up. One thing that struck me was at times the staff seemed to be very disorganised all dashing around rather than having some control. Also a number of the staff wore very causal clothes and nothing to indicate they worked at Hix so you weren’t sure if they were diners or staff. So to conclude our expectations were not met but I am sure if they take on board some of the more constructive comments they can improve.
Amazing view of the Lyme Regis Cobb. Beautiful place to eat fresh seafood. Lovely and informative staff too.
Second visit, just as excellent as before. Service impeccable, beautiful food and as for the views !
Great food and a great location
Simple fish, perfectly cooked. Hospitable, professional. Attractive ‘cabin’ interior, suspended over gardens and a lovely view. Noisy boors at adjacent table
Lovely setting for a celebratory evening meal. All the food was very tasty.
We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary at Hix and we're treated really well, with complementary truffles at the end or our meal with a "Happy Anniversary" message, which we thought was really nice. Excellent, creative food with some unusual and interesting surprises.
Highly recommend Hix. Views were outstanding as was food.
It's always a pleasure to eat at Hix Oyster & Fish House at Lyme Regis - delicious & good value fresh seafood & local fare in a lovely friendly & informal setting overlooking the Cobb & Lyme Bay.
Very enjoyable, great atmosphere, good good. Only downside was crying children but as we are very early, due to theatre trip this was to be expected in the holiday season. Will definitely go again.
Well. Call us gluttons for punishment. Not only did we dine at Hix Oyster and Fish Oyster House for our original booking, we also ended up there the night before. The oysters were fresh with nice accompaniments, the fried oysters with scotch bonnet mayo a bit meh and the dashi broth with hake was tasteless. But the service was the real problem. They missed a trick with us because it took 20 mins for our first drink order to come out and the another half an hour once we’d asked for the wine menu for our second round. Would have happily had more drinks... but we just didn’t get served! And that was the first night. We came back the second day (not really much else going on in Lyme Regis) thinking it might just have been busy the night before but it was even worse. Our waiter was rude and sarcastic, told us a dish wasn’t available, only for three to come out at the next table. When we asked again, it had suddenly reappeared on the menu. It wasn’t worth it to be honest. Then we were told the soup was no longer available and we wouldn’t be getting it. Another waiter comes by 10 mins later to set our places with soup spoons. He tells us, oh no it is on but there some confusion with the ingredients for both dishes we had ordered since it “was the same base”. Hmmm. We had ordered spaghetti with crab and chilli and a seafood bisque soup.... At the end of it all no apology. Won’t be going to another HIX and certainly won’t be recommending.
Wonderful seafood and fish. Very popular place so book well in advance. The views over the bay are second to none. Only one thing.... the choice of sparkling wines is limited. We will keep returning tho!
We were really excited for our meal at Hix, particularly when the excellent location would overlook the Candles on the Cobb event that take place once every three years. The staff were lovely, however despite the restaurant looking only moderately full we had to wait an hour and a half for food. Initially our starter order came out wrong but when we did finally eat, there was no denying that the food was great. Our bill included things from other people’s orders and unfortunately the service was not what I would expect from a such a popular and renowned restaurant, unfortunately nor was the apology from the restaurant manager. Such a shame and hope this was an isolated incident!
Second time at Hix for my birthday and was left very disappointed. I had asked for a window view when booking which I followed up with a tel call and they promised they would note my request but would depend on large groups etc. When we got our table we were sat in the middle and when I asked about my request I was told they never promised tables and that this was our available table. All around were other empty tables for two with great views and better positions we were made to feel uncomfortable and second class and nearly left at that point. We were moved and given free drinks but then our food order was rushed and disinterested- my partner ended up with no sides with his steak and we had to call someone else to order drinks. We then waited an hour for our main course and in the end ordered our desserts as our main was delivered and we asked for the bill but ended up paying as we rushed out to get our taxi. The views are stunning the food was OK - fish pie delicious and one young woman serving us was very sweet but the overall management was very poor and ruined a special occasion for me. Will not be returning again..
You can't beat the setting but the food is average. There are many many better places to eat in devon/Dorset.
Lovely food in a beautiful location. Would definitely recommend.
Our third trip to Hix and we love it more each time we come. Another wonderful meal- thank you
Booked this as a treat for my friends 40th birthday. The service was personable and made us feel looked after. The food was well presented and flavourful
Average food quality
Nice meal again although the starter was very dry (pollock with capers - needed some aioli) and mains lacked a bit of seasoning. Same negatives as last time which stop me leaving higher stars; bin store right beneath the balcony with the otherwise stunning view, male kitchen member using the female loo, considering cost I really think the mains should be served with a veg/ potato side included. Would still recommend as a lovely place with a stunning view of the Cobb.
