I always have the same starter, Heaven & Earth as it is sublime. I think they've tweaked it a little with some wild mushrooms added for extra umami so it's even nicer. We did splash out on the main course with the shared rib of beef for two but it was worth it for the quality of meat served perfectly medium rare as requested.
Slightly disappointed we only got 1 portion of fries with it but you could only choose 2 sides. Suggest at £90 that it should come with fries for 2 + 1 more side dish. Would cost the restaurant 'buttons' but would have made the meal perfect and got 5 starts for value too. A little more of the sauces wouldn't have gone amiss either.
Like the way the wine list was structured in price groups. The Barbera was excellent.
Bang average, service not great- they forgot to give the mains order to kitchen and didn’t apologise when we’d waited an hour. Got the meal half price because of a timeout card- wouldn’t have been happy at all otherwise
Popped in at 1830, before the rush. Reception was wonderful, we dined at the counter (the best place in my opinion) and ordered oysters - what else. Mo, the barman, was discretion itself and incredibly attentive. The food was wonderful as one would expect. Highly recommend dining at this time, before it gets too hectic.
We arrived for dinner at 6.30/7pm. There were lots of families in at this time which was great to see and the atmosphere was lively. After 8pm the lights were dimmed slightly and the venue took on a more ambient vibe. The food was excellent! My husband had the Heaven and Earth black pudding and mash and I, the crispy squid with toasted almonds chillies and kaffir lime leaves. We both followed with steak which was sensational. My only criticism was being seated in Marks bar after dinner. It was my birthday so it was a shame we had to wait in the restaurant for quite a while until a table was available downstairs. Previously diners from the restaurant were seated downstairs pretty swiftly however, maybe it was an exceptionally busy evening. We managed to get a table eventually and the bar staff were incredible.
Great food. Unfortunately, I told the restaurant twice it was my partners birthday beforehand and they forgot.
The host didn't know where my guests were.
(They were waiting in the empty bar for 20 minute house drinks- not even cocktails)
A fellow guest picked my coat from the floor- the staff walked by. (No one offered a cloakroom on arrival)
The waiter was complaining about how cold it was while we were freezing and trying to enjoy dinner....
The champagne was warm
The tartare was over seasoned.... (Chopped capers with beef really)
The curry was cold and the prawn burger was a soggy mustard mess
Hix got Every instance of being in a restaurant wrong !
I would like a refund to be honest
Lovely place. Great decor. Delicious food. Fantastic service (attentive helpful staff but left us to enjoy our meal). Good space between tables to allow decent levels of noise. Thoroughly enjoyable evening!
Great vibe! Great food! You will not be disappointed.
Crayfish to start, tasted good but not much to it. However, the fish curry was a knock out! The prawn cocktail and pasta that the other half had both looked and tasted great. Nice bustly brasserie atmosphere, if you’re looking for that sort of thing. Service ok, but nothing special.
Have been eating at Hix for years - mainly Soho but many others also. The Soho branch is very average now. There used to be a great Maitre D and fantastic staff but now service is lethargic at best and almost invisible - I think there was one server on during our lunch on Thurs. It's a shame as the location, restaurant space and food are still great - it just feels like nobody cares any more.
Service was efficient but not over the top, the food was absolutely superb, cant score much on ambience as a little quiet when I dined, which surprised me.
Arrived to empty restaurant,it was 1210 after all ,but plainly not expecting us,at the door the greeter was on the phone but quickly was on the ball and showed us to a table which we didn’t like. But She quickly allowed us to choose, handing us over to a young lady who again seemed surprised to see us. All rather strange as on the booking form they had asked if it was a special occasion and it was our wedding anniversary. Nevertheless we ploughing on,excellent menu but no sign of the lunch set menu which we had previously seen and fancied. Eventually we had to ask for it. Asked if we wanted water which was good except it was warm. They had had a problem with their fridge. By now we were beginning to feel somewhat disappointed as a previous visit had been so good. We pressed on and had an ok lunch ,but not what we expected from such a stellar establishment,Lyme Regis is much better.
Nice good value set lunch with family. Been many times before. Staff always lovely. Always enjoy it here.
Great service good food lovely ambience in the upstairs restaurant . This had been a Christmas present from a friend in Australia who chose the restaurant at random and it was a good choice . Hoping he sends another Christmas present this year
Food was good, but service on drinks was very slow.
At one point our waitress seemed to disappear for over half an hour and we couldn’t get a top up of our wine. We spoke to the manager and the replacement waiter was very attentive. There was no cocktail list other than 5 featured cocktails.
we didn't eat but we had a very enjoyable night, thank you
Good seafood at a reasonable price but this was because I had a 50% off voucher. The service was good and they let us order cocktails off menu.
Food was excellent however they brought the wrong main which meant by the time the correct main was made and brought the other was almost finished. They said they’d send the manager over but no one came to apologise or explain other than “the kitchen messed it up, yours will be a while” (!) nothing was deducted from the bill either or any offer to apologise which was a shame and a bit of a surprise in a place like Hix. Delicious nonetheless.
Disappointing given how good Mr Hix's reputation is.With one exception staff were indifferent and charmless. We had to ask for things several times.Food was below average.Salad tired and over salted ,for example.
The food was mediocre. The waitress was brusk, without personality, and didn't speak very good English.
I dining in this restaurant with friends.
The restaurant have a very beautiful and interesting decor.
The food it's good and the service was just okay, the waiter was friendly and give some suggestions on the beginning.
But was something that I didn't accept at all; a the end of our dining experience, I notice something on the floor, 3 mice just running around the restaurant, it's London and all we know it's full of mice... but when I called the waiter to show him, he told me that the day before they did a disinfestation because there were so many, Perfect, And after he told me "Don't looking at them but look at the table."
This is just unacceptable.
After this we paid and we left.
Excellent food and service at Hix Soho! My husband said it’s possibly the best lobster he’s ever had, and a nice touch at the end when they brought him a truffle with a candle in for his birthday.
Incredibly fresh seafood. So much favour and cooked to perfection.
The initial service was great. Then it went downhill. We were asked if we wanted bread. We said yes. But it was rock hard. Both me and my wife had difficulty eating it so we sent to back. The waitress apologized and said that it was the last batch and that they should have fresh ones coming soon. I said no need to bother and we didn't pay for the bread. I then ordered steak with lobster. Two plates came at the same time. I was expecting them to be spaced out. By the time I finished the steak, the lobster was stone cold. It also made me rush so that I could enjoy both warm. Desert and drinks were great. A little disappointed given the prices being charged here.
Went for an early evening meal as a family with young children the restaurant was very quite but comfortable and we were well cared for.
There was a wide selection of vegetarian food and my choice was very nice. What stood out was the service. The waitresses were soo friendly and helpful.
Food ok, not fabulous. Atmosphere good, especially the bar downstairs. Service friendly, if a little confused. We didn’t get the dessert we ordered, but what we did get was nice.
Fabulous restaurant ticks all the right boxes. Excellent interesting food at reasonable prices served with smile.
Not enough light
Food was good ( rib on the bone )
Service friendly and accurate
Pleasant atmosphere. Food good although all 3 main courses too heavy on the salt for our liking.
My experience was very good, however, my partner asked for 2 different types of beer that was on the menu and it was not available. Than we decided to go to a pub instead.
But I really liked the place, the service and the food.
Definitely will come back.
Really loved it. Fresh and delicious food and beautifully prepared. I chose the set menu which was great value. Kids were happy too and their main courses were free which was a bonus.
Have been in the evenings, but this time took the family pre-theatre. Nice not to be stuck with a chain restaurant. Great good for kids and adults, and the kids-eat-free deal was ace.
Very nice lunch. Food was excellent and the service polite and attentive. Will recommend to others and will come again. Thxs, Pete
Despite being a Friday lunchtime the place was almost deserted (apart, alas, from a screaming baby on a nearby table). The staff were inattentive and didn’t seem to care about our experience. No one asked if the food was okay, no one said goodbye or thank you when we left, the waiter tried to remove our starter plates before we had finished...... all pretty poor, especially given the price point and supposed reputation of Hix. Maybe this is why the place was deserted.
Both wines we wanted were ‘off’ - the suspicious side of me thought this was a ploy to upsell (if so, we didn’t fall for it). The food was okay but the starter portion sizes small for the money.
I spend a lot in restaurants and had a higher expectation of Hix. Not a good customer experience. But I guess no one cares....
Great client lunch at Hix, and lovely service. Food very hot and tasty, especially the Portland Crab and Fish Curry!!
Good option for a chilled early evening meal (that doesn't require standing in a queue!). Steak was a bit chewy, good wine selection, crab starter was tasty.
Monday night dinner at 730pm. Only a few tables occupied. Good food but no atmosphere.
Very impressed - pricey but one of the best steaks I’ve had. Would return (after payday)!
Great service. Chateau steak was awesome as was the Fish and chips! HIX IPA top notch. Plus, our last name is also Hix! Maybe we can meet Mark next time!
