We went for a 71st and 6th birthday celebration. I was excited about HIX because it's a nice restaurant for an occasion but as it advertises that kids are free, it's also kid friendly. The food was good, but we didn't find it very good value for money. The service should have been much better for the prices they charge. For example, the waiter didn't tell us the fish of the day until asked at the end of everyone ordering. They keep your wine bottle behind the bar, but then we had to ask for more to be poured when our glasses were empty. We also waited a long time for the bill after asking for it. I feel like HIX is a little confused as to what kind of restaurant it's really trying to be.
Having visited this restaurant many times and as a fan of Mark Hix’s approach, i booked this for a pre-theatre visit with a group of out of town friends.
Sadly, the food was very disappointing. Cold, under seasoned and the wait staff never asked us if we needed anything or how the food was. Had to get up and ask for the wine to be served.
Spoke with the manager, who generously took the mains and the service off the bill. But overall a disappointment.
We ordered a main course and dessert from the pre theatre menu. The main course took over 45mins to arrive whilst other tables who arrived after us received their starters. Whilst my food was nice, my friends spaghetti dish lacked flavour
We had the set menu and while some dishes were full of flavour the vegetarian options were really lacking in taste and needed plenty of seasoning. There were only a few options for our gluten free friend (coeliac). The waitress was helpful and attentive though we had to wait over an hour from arriving to have our mains.
The food was bland and the service was poor. I expect better when paying these prices.
Had a great time at Hix, the food was exquisite and enjoyed every mouthful. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was because their range of beer wasn’t great. Would totally recommend eating here great food lovely people.
One of the mains came out cold. We never normally send stuff back but did on this occasion.
Instead of getting a fresh dish, it was just reheated and the bits previously touched were hidden under the salad.
Pretty disappointed overall.
Food and Service great, but there are some problems with the kitchen, as the different courses take too much time
Food was bland and lacked anything special. Fried squid was served with no sauce. Too simple for the money
I've been here loads of times. we got the set menu. food was small portioned (fine) but the quality was average/pain. i got the fish & I make better myself at home. very disappointed in Hix. we got 2 bottles of champagne & they kept topping it up after every sip. great but with champagne I want to finish my current glass before adding fresh fizz. also the champagne needed to be more chilled. service - very keen, however wanted to take our order asap, felt rushed, got no recommendations. we spent £250. overall average/fine. I wont be returning anytime soon.
The food was good but the service AMAZING. Neil, manager was gentile, fun and multilingual!!!
Beautiful space with amazing artwork. Very kind, charming and helpful staff that attend to your every need. Delicious food at a very good price, amazing cocktails.
Ok but just average for money but service reasonable
The perfect place to catch-up with my friend. Great atmosphere without being overwhelming, excellent cocktails (Dorset Donkeys), delicious fish, attentive but not intrusive service. Marvellous!!
Came at 6pm for the set menu before a 730 show. The set menu is well priced, with good options. Service was attentive and quick although my main (spaghetti with mussels) seemed like it had been sitting under the lamp for a while. It was still tasty and overall the food is good. There is also a decent wine list. Definitely would return again for a meal before a show.
Very good pre-theatre menu. Great resturant with bar downstairs.
Great core theatre menu 3 choices on 3 courses
All lovely but most wine is a bit pricey
Been before and will go again
A disappointing visit. Table by the service point. Tight so every time waiter got a menu they intruded on our table. Bread offered when we sat down but not served. White wine warm on serving and then put in ice bucket with no ice. Main course and side dishes not served at the same time. Plates and dishes cleared before all of guests had finished.
Service was poor due to lack of staff which was acknowledged. Not a great reception / first impression when told at the door the bar is full so you cannot have s pre dinner drink. Food was Ok / average - good starters but one main course returned due to being cold. Maitre de was very responsive to our complaints but at the end of the day not a great night out in the West End for a top end Restaurant . Much better value options are available and a more friendly welcome.
Great venue and tasty food but all 3 main courses were tepid when served and were cold by the time we finished eating. Gave waiter feedback at the end of the meal but he wasn't particularly concerned.
The food was excellent although they had run out of our first choice on the menu. We had a lovely evening, great service, quality food and drink however, tables far too small and too close to neighbours and the lighting was so dim you'll need a torch to read the menu. This did detract from an otherwise excellent restaurant.
Nice place for a business lunch. Had the set menu and the food was lovely.
Service impeccable. Ambiance excellent. Set menu sounded wonderful but food was disappointing. Artichoke soup very thin and not quite hot enough. Cod had delicious flavours but the fish itself was over cooked. Good puddings and coffee.
Came here for our Sons preheater lunch on Sunday, The roast chicken was fantastic! 12yo struggled with the adult menu choices but the childrens menu for 8yo was great.
Really disappointing. I've had a great meal and time here previously. Was late for the booking - tried to call but they didn't pick up. The lady on reception said you she couldn't find the booking and said I must have the wrong HIX ! before admitting that she had literally just given my table away and claiming that she must have called me at the same time I was calling!! We didn't make a fuss - sat at bar and were pretty much ignored - if I hadn't have been an old friend and catching up - I would have left. The food was pretty good - but the experience poor. Won't be back in a hurry.
Have been going to Brewer St. for several years.Always good and not stupidly priced.
Food was pretty good, though nothing amazing. It was Saturday night and one poor waitress was having to basically serve all tables upstairs. She was great, but the place was obviously way under-staffed. It annoys me when restaurants take the mickey - both of their staff and customers - in this way. We like the place, but we wouldn't rush to go back after Saturday.
Delicious food, relaxed atmosphere and excellent service
Great restaurant. Confusing message when they say kids eat free during the day, it is actually only their main course that is free which was not made clear by staff when I asked about this. It was still great food though and we would go back.
Went for lunch and had the 3 course set lunch.
Choice was good, quality excellent.
Good wine list although on the pricey side.
Would definitely return.
Nice and central close to theatreland. Great service, great food.
My third visit for the Sunday Roast beef . As always the roast was good although the Yorkshire Pudding was a little heavier than previous visits. Good price for the roast with nice veg Great roast potatoes and jus (proper rich gravy)
The Aplle pie was the best I have had in any restaurant for years .
Service good and friendly.
Yes I would recommend the place to my friends
Great food and children friendly in addition!
Excellent from start to finish!
Arrived early because of rain so we were accommodated at the bar for drinks, variety of beverages on offer, staff very knowledgable. Set 3 pre-theatre ordered, Meal delicious, service impeccable. Can't fault anything we'll be back!
Came here for a Sunday roast - the restaurant was very quiet (close to shutting down). The food was lovely and the service attentive and efficient.
Lovely food, shame the restaurant was so quiet which meant ‘ambience’ hard to create, however appreciate we were there for an early Saturday lunch.
We had a fabulous New Year’s Eve late lunch at Hix and was so impressed by the service and the food. Ugne especially looked after us and she was informative about the food, had a lovely sense of humour and made it an enjoyable experience.
My usual spot for Sunday lunch in Soho with the papers... this time some lovely lamb cutlets did the trick!
We love Hix’s Oyster & Fish House in Lyme Regis (perfect every visit) and enjoyed Hix’s way with great ingredients when he was at The Ivy but we were disappointed by our Soho branch visit. Great Hix Fix and cockle popcorn - as usual - to start with but we can’t forgive the obviously frozen chips with our fish & chips and the peas certainly weren’t mushy, as billed, but blitzed petits pois - which are fine but can’t be called mushy... Not great value for £17.50 sadly. But we had a good waiter and liked the Hirst mobiles - we’ll have to wait until we go to Devon for our real Hix fix.
