Food was good, good sized portions. Lovely on a weekend when they have a string quartet playing.
We had great food and great service. It was my friends birthday and when they realised they brought over a birthday cake, very nice touch.
Excellent food, great location, would prefer a larger red wine glass as theirs have a short stem. That aside love it!
Slow service compared to normal, which is a shame is it is normally very good!
An outstanding find! My friend and I were visiting London, and one evening we decided to dine fairly late. We went online and discovered that Hoi Poloi was nearby our hotel. We had great difficulty finding the place in Shoreditch, because it was hidden behind a floral shop!
It's connected with the Ace Hotel on Shoreditch High Street, but you have to really seek out the place. Meanwhile, our meal was superb. The braised rib dish was wonderful, and my friend had a heavenly chicken pie....with great subtle flavors. We heard later that it was the chef's specialty. We were so pleased with our meal, that I took the trouble and time to peek into the kitchen and give the chef our compliments. I recommend it highly.
I really enjoyed my first trip to Hoi Polloi. The staff and service were excellent and the food was delicious. The ambiance was extremely pleasant and I really enjoyed listening to the string quartet while brunching, a really nice touch. One thing I think could be improved is the coffee, it was weak and tepid and overpriced but all in all, I would highly recommend Hoi Polloi.
I go regularly for brunch with friends to this restaurant and over the last few times, the service and food gets poorer and poorer. Last time, orders did not arrive or were wrong, so there was a lot of waiting around. This was not corrected by the restaurant and they offered no service recovery when pressed (waited for an additional 20 minutes for someone's food whilst everyone else had finished).
This time (probably my last time) we waited 25 minutes and had to call a server to get an initial coffee. We were never served by the same person again and every time had to call someone over which seemed to take 5-10 minutes and multiple attempts to ask servers to order. The poached eggs were also hard and just overall was mediocre. We then waited a further 25 minutes to pay, asking time and time again to various people. It was a great place to meet friends but I feel now that the service is so poor I will unlikely go back.
Food was ok, I find the tables uncomfortable.. had the ribs which were ok... wine is a bit pricey but overall it was an enjoyable meal
Delicious brunch. Excellent service in a comfortable restaurant
Great idea to serve a pot of coffee for two
Lovely ambience with the live music and wonderful service. Cocktails and food divine.
Fast and efficient service but we were a little underwhelmed by the dishes themselves today. Avocado and eggs with cornbread was bland and a little too cold, like it had been sitting out a while. Had better experience on a previous visit so hopefully it was just an off day.
It was the best brunch I’d had for a while, I really enjoyed the food and though it was good value.
Great place to have Brunch and great atmosphere. The live band and service make for a an enjoyable dining experience.
I was a bit disappointed about the food, maybe I had too many expectations..it was so poor (I don’t mean simple, I mean cheap)
I had the code with beans etc.. and I cannot find any flavor, it was tasteless, not salt at all
My wife had fish and chips, and it was like the ones you have in tourists restaurants, nothing special or upgrading
The only standout was the crushed roasted potato!
I had to say that the day after we had dinner at the Ivy and it was excellent!
Good Brunch especially with the string quartet.
Food was lovely - Had trouble with the card machine connecting which was the only negative experience.
Service was very poor, food lacked imagination and flavour - overpriced for what it is.
Clearly many things were missing for me this evening. I'd booked already via opentable, although everyone seemed pretty blank to my "I've got a reservation".
When I got there it was reasonably empty, but the tables that were occupied were certainly a younger, drunker audience. Lots of shouting across tables to eachother, even to bar staff in some instances.
If you're looking for an environment that's conducive to enjoying your meal, I'd probably avoid this place next time around.
I wasn't super impressed.
Brunch menu is over priced for what they have on the menu. I expected a tastier plate to the one served. £12 for avocado on cornbread was not worth it.
We booked for an early dinner but just missed the window for set price 3 course dinner for £25. The food and service were good though menu was ordinary. It was quiet to start with but got busy after an hour or so, the diners were mainly under 35 so there was a certain young vibe. Good wine list but the cheapest wine starts at £36 a bottle. Will go again to try their set dinner.
The food was nice but they service was an absolute shambles. Things arrived in the wrong order, many things weren't available (and not made clear about). They didn't have the wine we wanted and then we were brought the wrong wine. And then on the bill they had added on the bottle that wasn't available (an extra £45 which I luckily spotted).
Oh and it was our anniversary and they plonked a small cake with 'Happy Birthday' written on the plate on our table at the end.
Breakfast menu was excellent. I had cheese toastie with a side of avocado, simple and full of taste.
Impressed with their elixir as well.
My friends had omelette and mushroom on toast everyone was happy.
Service was quick and smiling.
The food was very good, and it was lovely to hear a live string quartet during my meal. Service was extremely slow, especially for the restaurant only being half full.
The Ace hotel is as shoreditch as you get, almost a cliche in itself. Hoi Polloi is a lovely restaurant. The atmosphere is sophisticated without feeling elitist. The food is hearty (we had brunch) and classy at the same time. The service was mostly good aside from our drinks arriving slightly after our food. Highly recommended for any occasion and meal
Service was great, live music was great, food was great AND presented me with a surprise birthday cake and a candle! Will come back again!
Thank you Hoi Polloi
Upon our arrival we were greeted by a gentleman who showed us to our table. Instantly we loved it as the ambience and the attention was great. Once we ordered drinks and food, it all came relatively quickly! The food was delicious with lovely portions. Would definitely recommend to anyone that likes nicely decorated restaurants.
Been here twice now and both times it has been exceptional; highly recommended. I never leave reviews but I've felt compelled to do so for this place - must be decent!
We were given a great booth near the live string quartet. Our waiter Jose was charming. All four of us enjoyed our food choices and we'd definitely go back.
Very much enjoyed our visit to Hoi Polloi, which broadly delivers for the class of cuisine it pitches itself at. Some details could use some attention: the bread and butter, for an establishment of this type, would be even better with warm bread rather than cold, sliced sourdough (but the whipped butter is a great, America-inspired touch). And the watercress on our bavette was limp and yellowing in parts, with my friend deciding not to eat this. However, the steak beneath it, and the ethereal butter it swam in, was the best bavette I have ever had - a difficult cut of meat which Hoi Polloi has completely mastered. On the same note, beef dripping fries were rich, unctuous, and heady with the taste of beef - a real treat. Delicious dessert, a not-too-tart apple and blackberry crumble where the crumble is crunchy biscuit, with a whole one to the side for good measure. Jing tea rounds off a pleasant meal harmoniously.
The lighting is soft and yellow, the seats are plush, and the food is delicious. Very cute place.
I’m a massive fan of Hoi Polloi. The staff are friendly and they serve a good cooked breakfast. Their ham and cheese toastie is a family favourite
Nice little gem. On weekends/bank holidays they have a live quartet which was a lovely surprise.
Great decor and friendly service. A favourite in the Shoreditch area
We came here for a post big-birthday-night-out Sunday breakfast and it didn't disappoint - food was great, service quick and friendly and the atmosphere was fabulous. The icing on the cake was the AMAZING string quartet playing current tunes which made the whole experience so memorable - brilliant!
Great place for brunch with friends - loved the string quartet!
it was a complete deception, waiting staff unpleasant, food and drinks took forever and all prepared without any care whatsoever.
enjoyed it 4 years ago, cried over this terrible bday brunch.
Excellent place, still one of my favourite in London!
I was really unimpressed. Reviews on TimeOut listed it as one of the best restaurants in Shoreditch, so I took my boyfriend there for a date and the food was very disappointing. The saving grace was that it we paid for the early dinner deal so it wasn't too expensive. If I had paid full price for the dishes I chose however, I would have possibly made a complaint. The food was overcomplex and lacked flavour, although it looked pretty. I don't know if it was an off day in the kitchen but I wasn't impressed by any aspect of the visit.
Met a business colleague for lunch. On first glance, the menu seemed a bit limited with most of the dishes quite heavy-sounding. I had the Kale salad, and my guest had a Caesar Salad. I wasn't expecting much but have to say I LOVED my salad... and ate every bite! The service was very friendly, though a little inattentive and we had to ask to order, and ask for our bill. The scene is young hipster (and I am neither) and maybe they don't usually have afternoon meetings! But it was a pleasant lunch, and easy to focus on business. If it was my local I'd return for the Kale salad every other day!
This restaurant was such a gem to find! All of the servers were polite and professional, even our designated service who explained he was new was fantastic! The food was gorgeous, I had the polenta gnocchi and my father had the squid - portion sizes were generous but not overwhelming and the cocktails were also delicious! In terms of the setting, it was quiet but didn’t feel empty at all, the ambience was classy but still modern and relaxed. Overall a fabulous place, perfect for that ‘fine dining’ feel in a more relaxed setting.
