What Insiders Are Saying
The Holborn Dining Room is a big and grand, but still casual, all day restaurant inside the Rosewood Hotel, serving posh British comfort food.
Pies were disappointing considering price and the pie room being such a signature for the restaurant.
We went at 1pm expecting to have brunch on a Sunday as they had a brunch menu listed on their website, but were surprised to be told that they have not been serving brunch for a year. They were nice enough to have the chef make some eggs but they were inedible and the sauce was thick and paste like. I ordered a shrimp burger which was overly spiced and just greasy. Such a shame, as service was great, but too overpriced 80.00 for 3 non edible plates. Will not return and recommend.
I took my partner there for his birthday not really knowing what to expect. From the moment we arrived we felt comfortable and were well looked after. The whole atmosphere was great and all members of staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The cocktails and food were just delicious. A thoroughly enjoyable experience from start to finish. We will definitely be recommending to friends and family, and are already looking forward to going back in the near future.
Arrived early and was accommodated straight away, service and food of the highest order. Will definitely Dine at this outstanding venue again.
Service outstanding. We had an excellent waitress who was engaging, knowledgeable but knew when to chat and not to chat. Really impressed! Scotch Egg was brilliant, pies just what we were hoping for. Really well done
Lovely interior, wonderful food and great service from all staff. Our table was booked for 6.30pm and by 9.30pm we were still sat at our table – we were not rushed at all! Would definitely recommend!
La comida excelente, los cortes increíbles, el pie de pollo no fue lo máximo, pero no se pierdan el Lobster Tart!
Food was extremely salty - pork pie unbearably so and mashed potatoes were refunded. Octopus was rubbery. Scotch egg was excellent but salty. Disappointing food overall.
The room is beautiful with a great atmosphere - perfect setting for a birthday celebration. We started with oysters, which were good, but not outstanding. The pork pie was excellent and the creamed spinach was amazing! The ginger and rhubarb trifle was rich and delicious. Wines were pricey but we had a good English sparkling with the oysters and a very reasonable Portuguese Dao that was perfect with our food. We finished up with dessert wine - thanks to the waiting staff for their recommendations. Service was professional, efficient and friendly. We’ll be back again!
A huge disappointment. What was to be the highlight of our meal.....the pie was not a patch on those
sold at M&S. Bit of Emperor's Clothes there. And as for value.....£6.00 for a modest bowl of creamed
spinach set new records. Will not be visiting again.
Best sausages ever.
Great looking room, good waiting staff, huge buzz, but food was criminally oversalted, and at £24 for a pie, nowehere near good value for money. I wanted to like this so much more...
Great service; delicious food. We went with the house wine - which was very good
A great find in the heart of Holborn. The Pies are a must! The room and service were excellent. We will be going back!
The food is good but extremely overpriced. £30 for a small vegetarian pie with side? Service is a little overbearing.
I’ve been waiting to visit here for ages and I wasn’t disappointed. Wonderful restaurant, great service and most amazing pies. The champ mash was great too. Will definitely be back.
Great food and service. Menu with a difference. I found it too loud inside though.
Fish, chips and mushy peas just can't beat it. My niece enjoyed her Sunday roast but neither of us have managed to get to the dessert course or starter; finished off with a gin of course.
It was my wife’s birthday. It was nice and the food was good.
Took my friends here for a supposed nice lunch. Little did I know that the mains will take 40 minutes to arrive. My friend's dish was forgotten so it took extra time (though taken out of the final bill to the restaurant's credit). My pie, which was supposed to be a signature dish was quite salty and so drenched with gravy that the dough was soaked and rubbery. At the end we wanted to bring home some leftovers, but they didn't "offer that service". What?! Overall not a good value for money and not the relaxed and seamless lunch we were all hoping for.
A place to take friends or family for a fun supper, followed by a lively Jazz evening in Scarfes bar opposite. I would however, not recommend you use this venue as a special occasion place if you are looking for next level experience for a loved one. The venue decor is lovely, and looks exactly how you would expect it from the pictures. The food was OK.. I wouldn't say food alone value is worth it. The ambiance was great - busy and lively. The service however is not what you would expect from an establishment such as this. This being an restaurant for the five star hotel, you would expect a five star service. Unfortunately, at the mention of a fault to one of the dishes we received, we were immediately strongly told that we were wrong and that three of the chefs had confirmed that we were wrong. A gentle acknowledgement from the maitre d would have sufficed, rather than making our entire table feel stupid and unwelcome. We were offered only a basic alternative dish to replace this, followed by the remainder of the evening full of snide comments and unprofessional service that you would not expect to receive when considering dining at this restaurant. Further to this, our Visa card was taken away from the table, out of our sight without our consent - an absolute no no in ANY basic hospitality training. We will sadly not be returning to this lovely venue for food due to the poor experience we received based on the service alone.
Very good as always. The Stone Bass was excellent. Service just a tad slow. We were heading to the opera and had to rush at the end.
One of my favourite places in London. The food is delicious and the staff warm and welcoming.
It was a get together of an ex-colleague, my birthday and friends. The food was great and the service was really good. The steaks here are the best that I’ve tasted in the whole world.
Lovely evening, attentive staff, well presented and tasty brasserie style cooking (grilled octopus was superb, and they have an excellent selection of fresh seasonal produce reflected in their menu. Charcuterie is good here, too). It must be said that Michael the head sommelier truly made our evening, and also gave us the opportunity to explore and discover some incredible wines: thank you so much. Great place, would recommend.
PS. Leave room for the tarte tatin.
Ordered two grilled sandwiches after a 20min wait, took another 20 to arrive - almost my entire 1hr lunch! Not cheap either at £14 and £16 a pop, but very average food - dry bread, overcooked, and not much on offer by way of relish. You'd expect something more..maybe even special...from a 5star hotel. I've been here before and had much better experience, but I'd say food and service compromised when it gets busy - which in Holborn, is when most people want to eat!
Will stick to Scarf's in future...which remains my favourite London bar!
This the first time we've paid fifty pounds for two glasses of very ordinary non-vintage champagne. The drinks menu does not make it clear this is the cost. The service charge, which I didn't pay, was calculated including all drinks, making the alcohol even more expensive than the exorbitant markup. The food was ok, but nothing special and did not warrant the asking price.
We went there for Sunday breakfast. Food was ok but entirely unspectacular. For instance the granola with fresh blueberries and yoghurt was just that - a bit of yoghurt with supermarket cereal and maybe 5 or 6 blueberries sprinkled on top. Similar for the Full English and the Eggs Benedict. 80 GBP was that level of quality is just not justified.
I have coming to this place since few years but I found it very busy on my last visit, much more than previously but always a great venue! Missing the brunch still but overall it’s always such a good value, definitely recommend!
Pretty standard breakfast for the price. Was expecting a lot more.
Treated my friend for her 30th. Great atmosphere and service. We had the beef wellington which was amazing!
I took a pie-afficienado who said that it was the best steak&kidney pud he’d ever had. I had a well seasoned hot pork pie. Slightly sad we couldn’t manage to finish chips, or order pudding, but I ordered the wine flight and it was amazing.
Had a business lunch here. Great pies! Really enjoyed the lunch. Excellent food and service
Good menu, with a couple of excellent specials. Had to wait past our booking time for our table and ask for the bill after finishing for quite awhile, but in between the service was good. I'd go back.
I ordered the granola which is the most tasteless I have eaten in restaurant and hardly any fruit - a complete rip off
Fantastic food, slightly higher in price than I expected (3 small slices of gravadlax for 15 quid felt like it was a bit cynical). They didn’t rush us out, were attentive in topping up our wine, although one thing on service: the mains were out waiting for us next to the table momentarily and we hadn’t finished our starters (or had them cleared) brilliant long lunch overall, have already recommended to friends
Amazing experience. Food was great and location was really elegant.
Must try: scotch egg, pie, steak
A bit pricy, but really worth trying
Been waiting a long time to visit and was not disappointed! splendid service and attitude from the staff right from the front door to leaving. Id say HDR was a British take on the grand brasserie. Saturday lunch service was quite busy though you might be able to walk in and grab a table for 2. Food was really good - even the kids ate theirs all up! Will certainly be back to visit the pie room.
Nice, pricey for what it was but good atmosphere and was busy
I went on Wellington Wednesday as a very special treat for my 3 siblings & I. HDR did not in any way disappoint.
It is not possible to improve on the Wellington. Nothing better can be done with fillet steak.
The service is friendly and just the right ride of informal.
A great night that exactly fitted the bill - which was I admit heavy. But certainly worth it.
